October 19th marked the 13th anniversary of my dad's passing. It was a deeply profound day, as I experienced a revelation about my grief. I realized that to reach a healthier place with my grief, I needed to engage with it differently. For the past 13 years, I've held onto a level of consciousness regarding my grief that requires transformation. I've been wearing a cloak of identification with the narrative of someone who lost their parents too young, feeling like a victim and grappling with anger over both of my parents' deaths (my mom passed away five years ago). However, last Saturday, I realized to reach the next level of healing, I needed to cultivate a different relationship with my grief and my dad. While I'm unsure exactly what this new relationship looks like, I set an intention that day to let go and surrender, shifting from the mindset of “this happened to me” to a perspective of “this happened for me.” I aspire for my grief to embody more light than darkness, and to serve as a teacher rather than a burden. I want it to guide me toward humility and deeper wisdom. When grief resurfaces and I feel thesadness and loss in my bones, I wish to embrace it through my tears or screams, but not to identify solely with it.I share this journey because one woman who has profoundly influenced my understanding of grief is Elizabeth Lesser. I discovered her work around 11 years ago, shortly after my dad's death, when I read her book Broken Open. Every word resonated deeply and reassured me that I could survive this loss. This book radically changed my life, and I often gift it to those going through difficult transitions. The Cracking Open podcast has an exciting upcoming episode where, for the first time, I host a dual interview with Elizabeth and Mary Pipher to discuss a particular and profound issue for women (stay tuned for its release on November 21st!)Leading up to that episode's release, I will re-release their initial interviews with me so you can soak in their deep wisdom and charm. Whether it's the first time you've listened or a refresh, you are in for a treat.Elizabeth has touched millions through her bestselling books, including Cassandra Speaks: When Women Are the Storytellers, The Human Story Changes, Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow and Marrow: Love, Loss & What Matters Most. She co-founded the Omega Institute, a retreat and conference center in Rhinebeck, NY, dedicated to holistic education and social change movements, attracting over 30,000 participants annually. In 2008, she also helped Oprah Winfrey produce a 10-week online seminar based on Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth, which reached more than 8 million viewers worldwide. Elizabeth is a frequent Oprah's Soul Series host and has appeared on Super Soul Sunday. Please enjoy this incredible conversation. Grab a cup of tea, a notebook, and a pen, and take this hour to soak in Elizabeth's storytelling, wisdom, and insights.Love,MollyLearn more about Elizabeth Lesser and her work hereThe new 6-Month Coaching Group begins November 6th! New memoirs by former National Security Adviser H. R. McMaster and recovery advocate William Cope Moyers document conflicts of different kinds. In At War with Ourselves, McMaster contends with his years in the Trump administration and the political infighting he experienced at the White House. Moyers' Broken Open documents a more personal struggle with maintaining his sobriety 35 years into his recovery journey. In today's episode, McMaster talks with NPR's Steve Inskeep about the three types of people he encountered at the White House–and what U.S. foreign policy would look like under a second Trump presidency. Later, Moyers speaks with NPR's Scott Simon about what happens when sobriety is jeopardized. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

William Cope Moyers, son of famed journalist Bill Moyers, thought he conquered his addiction demons after hitting rock bottom. But 20 years into recovery, prescribed painkillers triggered a relapse that challenged everything he knew about the path to sobriety. In this revealing conversation, Moyers opens up about his new book, Broken Open, sharing this experience with substance abuse and how it threatened to derail his life for a second time. His journey offers hope to those struggling with addiction and pushes for a more inclusive approach to treatment, even in the face of resistance from recovery traditionalists. Bestselling author and national recovery advocate William Cope Moyers shares his journey of recovery, which began in 1989, and his unexpected encounter with prescribed pain medication in 2012. Despite having decades of sobriety and a wealth of recovery capital, Moyers struggled for a few years with addiction to painkillers following significant dental surgery. He highlights the complexities of addiction, the importance of anti-craving medications like Suboxone, and the stigma surrounding them. This episode explores Moyers' path to finding stability again and underscores the message that recovery is not a linear journey. In the more than twenty-five years since she co-founded Omega Institute—now the world's largest center for spiritual retreat and personal growth—Elizabeth Lesser has been an intimate witness to the ways in which people weather change and transition. In our conversation I shared the question we have been exploring on the show for years.A question that can serve as a natural companion to the experience of change, and transition we so often face in the many facets of our lives:When my heart begins to close, how do I open it again? Her response was that this question, may be the one that she's explored more than any other in her life. Today we'll explore the practice of opening the heart and mind again when it begins to close. The conversation is broken into 3 parts:In part one: Elizabeth will offer share some of her own insights she's gained over the years about opening the heart and finding the courage to blossom into who we were meant to be.In part two:She'll offer some of her hard-earned wisdom about staying open, curious, and engaged in tough conversations. Whether it be across the political divide or elsewhere. She'll also share some of her personal story about an experience with her sister that centered around uncovering the depth of their love through the life-and-death experience of a bone marrow transplant. Particularly how this experience opened the door for them to engage in a practice of being radically honest with eachother. A practice that ultimately transformed them both.In part three:We'll discuss perhaps the most challenging form of opening. Relaxing into uncertainty. Cultivating the ability to let go and relax into the vulnerability of being human. And as we wrap up Elizabeth will leave us with a closing thought around why a spiritual practice is so important for the challenging times we are facing now.Today's conversation is just scratching the surface on these themes. For more, I would highly encourage you to pick up a copy of her beautiful book, Broken Open.Did you find today's episode inspiring? "Sharing Bread and Wine, Part 1: Broken Open" (4-21-2024) - Rev. Carla Aday
A talk by Zen teacher Renshin Bunce.
In this session, Alvin dives deep into the challenges and triumphs on the journey towards achieving audacious goals. Discover the significance of perseverance, the soul's resilience, and the profound wisdom shared by the greatness coach. Facing the Soul's Opening: Alvin discusses the sensation of the soul opening up, akin to feeling broken on the path to ambitious goals. The greater and more audacious the goal, the more profound this experience can be. Navigating Challenges: Listeners are reminded that pursuing unique and impactful dreams often leads to facing unprecedented challenges. Alvin emphasizes the importance of persistently pushing through obstacles, with the assurance that beyond lies the realization of one's aspirations. The Illusion of Choice: Alvin challenges the notion of choice, asserting that those chosen for extraordinary dreams have an obligation to bring their visions to fruition, even when facing doubts from themselves and others. Wisdom Shared: Alvin shares a powerful quote from Cynthia Ocelli, highlighting the necessity for a seed to be completely undone for its greatest expression. The analogy of the seed cracking open and appearing destroyed mirrors the transformative journey towards personal mastery. Embracing the Dark Moments: The podcast addresses the inevitability of dark moments on the hero's journey. Alvin encourages listeners to hold on during the darkest times, likening it to the night before the dawn. As you embark on your hero's journey towards personal mastery, remember that the breaking open of your soul is a natural part of the transformative process. Embrace the challenges, seek help when needed, and persist in the pursuit of your dreams. Your unique contribution is needed in the world, and as you persevere, you'll find that the dawn of fulfillment awaits. Until next time, be relentless in your pursuit of personal mastery. Peace. Learning to BE with life will help you balance your energy for proper and most maximum effect. If brokenness happens to you, if you feel darkness and despaire, your over-intellectual mind will lead you to over-thinking which augments your negative feelings. Most things are small experiences that you keep mulling over and fighting, which makes them larger and most painful. When you remind yourself that being broken up can be worked through, your surrender makes each experience less painful. The most painful experiences SHOULD change you by breaking you and creating pain. Then, the pain created innumerable heights of greatere self-acceptance. You must accept that life will break you open and dealing with it by stopping your feelings is a way of avoiding the problem and, subsequently, the solution. Not to mention, there are thousands of people in your lfie that you'd like to save and when you're broken open to truly do good for these people. When you change, you can change others. What can you do to make a difference by letting people know who you are.

In this episode, Esha shares wisdom of being broken open rather than broken. The rebirthing process begins when the old self you use to know is in pieces from loss. Being broken open is a reorganization of the way of life, where divine love can pour in and restructure a new way of being and living. By allowing what is and meeting oneself in that space, one can dare to embrace the fullness of one's humanity.
My guest today, Karen Stoteraux, took a big leap of faith when she moved across country with her 3 year old after a divorce. We talked about how she found the courage to make the move and then create a community and space for new parents after her twins were born. Karen is the owner, founder, and CEO of The Family Room. Her passion for supporting women is tied to her own experience as a mother to three girls. After the birth of her twins, Karen was shocked by the lack of comprehensive support in her local community for women and families entering parenthood. She decided the best way to help families was to create a space just for parents and bring the most experienced birth, postpartum, and infant and child development professionals in the community under one roof. In 2014, Karen created what she wished existed. Today, The Family Room has two locations in the Los Angeles- area. Karen lives in Pasadena with her husband and children. To kick off a new season, I'm joined by one of my personal heroes, Elizabeth Lesser as we dive into the power of women's storytelling and the modern woman's fight for agency. In this episode, Elizabeth delves into her book "Cassandra Speaks," the #MeToo movement, and her own journey toward claiming her power. We discuss the fear of being disliked for speaking up and the importance of being true to oneself, even if it means making waves and ruffling some feathers. Elizabeth shares the lessons she learned from Brené Brown about the difference between being nice and being kind, and why being clear and upfront is often the most compassionate choice. Get ready to be inspired by Elizabeth's wisdom and experiences as a woman leader, author, and activist.About Elizabeth Lesser:Elizabeth Lesser is a bestselling author and co-founder of the Omega Institute, a conference and retreat center in Rhinebeck, New York. She's the brains behind books like "The Seeker's Guide," "Broken Open," and "Marrow," and her latest release, "Cassandra Speaks," empowers women to trust their instincts and tell new guiding stories. Elizabeth co-founded the Omega Institute in 1977, which has since become a leader in holistic education, offering a wide range of workshops and training programs. She's also the co-founder of the Women's Leadership Center, which grew out of the popular Women & Power conference series. Original Airdate: July 4, 2018Author of the New York Times bestselling book “Broken Open,” Elizabeth Lesser shares how she likes to unwind, make each day matter and learn from the challenges life puts in front of her. Elizabeth explains how she used what she calls the healing power of love to “clear up” relationships in her life and why she believes we should never wait to have life-changing conversations with those we love. Since the publication of “Broken Open,” Elizabeth has been through many tough times, including the return of her younger sister's lymphoma and later death. Elizabeth reveals what she would write if her book had an epilogue.

Welcome to our book club where we will be discussing Elizabeth Lesser's book Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow. Together we explore The Call of the Soul and connect with Elizabeths heart stories as well as stories people were open enough to share. One thing we picked up on from the first part of this book is in every experience we can ask ourselves "What does my soul need to learn from this?" and getting quiet enough to listen for the answers. There is so much here when it comes to The Pheonix Process and how if we can be exposed to the pain of life enough that no matter what we can rise from the ashes. Elizabeth is raw and real and shares her infidelities and how her pain helped her grow. As mothers we appreciated the section of the book on children and Elizabeths trials and tribulations with her own children as well as stories from friends and other that impacted her life. There is so much fear when it comes to death and even with birth. Here in this book we learn how to confront our own death, and Elizabeth even walks us through a meditation for dying. This meditation is here to create acceptance and love to help us live a more fulfilled life opposed to living in fear of our last days. Finally, we swim with The River of Change allowing life's lessons and signs to be here as guides in our daily lives. We are grateful for Elizabeth and her open vulnerable heart and how she has been a beacon of light in the darkest moments of life. History is carried forward through the stories a culture tells and values. That's why stories have the power to shape our world and define our identity. However, for most of human history, the storytellers have been men — and women's voices have been largely absent. According to my guest, Elizabeth Lesser, had there been an equal blend of male and female voices, it would have changed our culture, our values, and the way we live. In her new book, “Cassandra Speaks,” she explores these issues in-depth, which we will be discussing in this episode. Elizabeth Lesser is the author of The Seeker's Guide, Marrow and the NYT bestseller Broken Open. She is the co-founder of Omega Institute, recognized internationally for its workshops and conferences in wellness, spirituality, creativity, and social change. She's given two popular TED talks and is one of Oprah Winfrey's Super Soul 100, a collection of leaders using their voices and talent to elevate humanity. In this interview, Elizabeth and I discuss the messages in stories we've been told through the ages and its impact on how women feel about our appearance, sense of power, and their abilities. We also talk about the steps that we can take to change the narrative so that it empowers both women and men. If you liked what you heard, don't forget to like, rate, share and subscribe to this podcast. Thank you!

After 200 episodes, the WASP is still all about the amazing legacy left to us by David. I continue to honor that legacy by hosting this podcast with inspirational and informative guest and directing his American Heroes Run. Two more legacies will continue: Gary Stotler and I have a life group for men. It will focus on fostering better mental and emotional health spaces for men whether they are recovering from addiction, alcohol abuse, eating dysfunction, or dealing with divorce or other relationship issues, family, business and financial concerns, or other everyday pressures. We will find pathways to success through better motivation and self-discipline, journaling, fitness, and more. We will have a positive and encouraging Facebook group, Zoom calls, face-to-face retreat-style meetups, and more with the option for one-on-one meetings with Gary and me. Please contact me for more info. I am also creating a proposal to fulfill David's dream to run the bases at Coors Field in Denver, the home of the Colorado Rockies, to increase awareness and raise funds to combat the serious opioid crisis in this country. It will be called On-Base Against Opioids. I mention in the podcast a couple of areas in which I have needs to pull this off. Finally, I provide a reading from David's book, "Out There: A Story of Ultra Recovery" in which David wrote in brutal honesty about some of the lowest of his lows as an alcohol and drug abuser, and how he finally put his foot down to turn around his life. It is incredibly impactful.David's books Out There, Broken Open, and Eat Sh*t and Die are available on Amazon in both print and audiobook formats.Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor
This bit of wisdom comes with a twist. This insight from a conversation I had with Lindsay Recknell on her outstanding podcast, Hope Motivates Action. Tune into the entire conversation here.
Welcome to our first episode of Season 2 of the Cracking Open Podcast!I first came across Elizabeth Lesser's work about 11 years ago after my dad died. I was in deep grief, and someone told me about her book Broken Open. While reading it, every word made me feel like I was going to survive the death of my dad. Broken Open radically changed my life and it is my go-to gift that I give to anyone who I know is going through a difficult transition in their life. After reading her book, I attended the Women & Power Conference led by Elizabeth, at the Omega Institute, which she co-founded in 1977. It was there that I met Elizabeth in person for the first time, and I immediately felt her deep wisdom and open heart. To me, Elizabeth's life is a beautiful metaphor of the phoenix rising. She opens her heart and story to all of us around how she has been broken open (the ending of her marriage, the death of her sister) and how these burning moments have invited her to die in order to rise from their ashes.Elizabeth is a New York Times bestselling author of several books, including Cassandra Speaks: When Women are the Storytellers, the Human Story Changes; Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow and Marrow: Love, Loss & What Matters Most and The Seekers Guide. As if this wasn't enough, in 2008 she helped Oprah Winfrey produce a 10-week online seminar based on Eckhart Tolle's book A New Earth. The webinar was viewed by more than 8 million people worldwide. She's also a frequent host on Oprah's Soul Series, a weekly radio show on Sirius XM, and a guest on Oprah's Super Soul Sunday. In 2011, she gave a popular Ted Talk called Take “the Other” to Lunch, a call for civility and understanding as we negotiate differences as human beings. I could spend hours just talking about her incredible accomplishments. But to me, Elizabeth is ultimately a woman who can ignite one's soul. To not only feel seen and heard but also to be a better human being on this spiritual journey we call life. Please enjoy this incredible conversation. Get yourself a cup of tea, grab a notebook and pen, and gift yourself this hour to soak in Elizabeth's storytelling, her wisdom, and her life. Welcome to Season 2! David often talked with me about rising from the ashes while running ultramarathons. He called this The Switch. I read from his book Broken Open about his finding The Switch while running the Leadville Trail 100 where he was perilously-close to getting cutoff at mile 60 to making a miraculous turnaround and finishing. An inspiring and worthwhile lesson for us all in every aspect of our lives.Find David's books "Out There," "Broken Open," and "Eat Sh*t and Die" on Amazon. You can register for the American Heroes Run at https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=85175Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor
Consistency is the key to success whether it is sports, overcoming addiction or alcoholism, improving your eating habits, or your quest for self-improvement. You can plan consistency into your schedule to set yourself up for success, and avoid counterproductive "cheat days" and any other excuses to take you off-track to achieving your goals. You can register for the American Heroes Run at https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=85175Sign-up now for the American Heroes Run Challenge to achieve your summer training goals. For only $76 per month, you'll receive personal coaching from me, 50% off any of the AHR races, which is worth anywhere from $25 to $87.50, and a copy of your choice of one David Clark book, either Out There, Broken Open, or Eat Shit and Die. A great value for sure. But I will take only 10 runners, so reach out to me ASAP to join the challenge. Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor
On the heels of a great sports weekend, I have a challenge for some of you. We are approximately two months away from the American Heroes Run, races that were begun 12 years ago by David, which I took over directing last year in Longmont CO, just east of Boulder. We had a great turnout despite Covid, and we're expecting an even more awesome event this year. David began the American Heroes Run to honor first responders, military servicepeople and veterans, and those lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. The splendid motto of the races is “Patriotism without Politics,” something I think we can all embrace. In true David fashion, there are 9/11 tie-ins with the race distances as well as the start times. For instance, the half-marathon begins at the time the first tower of the World Trade Center was struck, the 9.11-mile run begins when the second tower was struck, and the 5K begins when one of the hijacked planes plowed into the Pentagon. Distances include 5K, 9.11-mile, half-marathon, marathon, 9 hour and 11 minutes, 24 hours, and 100 miles. There is also a virtual option. Sign-up for any race and get a race shirt, finisher award, and certificate. You can register for any distance at https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=85175So here's the challenge. Let's get your summer running goals in gear! I'm looking for 10 runners to do the American Heroes Run Challenge. There will be two categories. The first is Couch to American Heroes Run. You can be starting from ground zero up to being capable of completing a 5K run. Our goal will be to get you to complete the 9.11-mile run or half-marathon, either in-person or virtually. The second category is Couch to Marathon or more. Not literally from the couch, but getting you to ramp up to completing either the AHR marathon, 24-hour, or 100-miles. Since we're starting this right after Independence Day, the cost is only $76 per month. You'll receive personal coaching from me, 50% off any of the AHR races, which is worth anywhere from $25 to $87.50, and a copy of your choice of one David Clark book, either Out There, Broken Open, or Eat Shit and Die. A great value for sure. But I will take only 10 runners, so reach out to me ASAP to join the challenge.
