Simply put, Thomasin McKenzie is of the best young actresses working today, appearing in the likes of Leave No Trace (one of Ali's favourite dramas of the past decade or so), Last Night In Soho, The Power Of The Dog, Jojo Rabbit, Eileen and now Joy, her latest, now on Netflix. Joy tells the story of the three British fertility pioneers who helped make IVF a reality, namely an obstetrician called Patrick Steptoe (Bill Nighy), a physiologist called Robert Edwards (James Norton) and a nurse / embryologist called Jean Purdy (McKenzie). In this episode of the podcast, Thomasin talks about working within this trio of charming acting types, the importance of highlighting Purdy's achievements and her love of My Neighbour Totor (you'll see).
In episode 30, Johnny talks to Academy Award-winning art director and production designer Grant Major. Described by Vanity Fair as ‘the architect of New Zealand's greatest cinematic achievements', Grant has an impressive body of work. His work in the early 1990s on Jane Campion's An Angel At My Table led him to work with Peter Jackson on Heavenly Creatures. He remained in the Peter Jackson fold on The Frighteners, followed by the Lord Of The Rings trilogy and King Kong. He also worked on Niki Caro's Whale Rider in the early 2000s, and recently reprised his collaboration with Jane Campion on the Oscar-nominated The Power Of The Dog. Grant has been nominated for five Academy Awards, winning the Oscar in 2003 for his work on The Return Of The King. Their talk covers Grant's career from working in New Zealand television in the 1970s and the BBC in the 1980s, to conquering Hollywood with Jane Campion and Peter Jackson throughout the 1990s and beyond. They discuss Grant's influences from filmmakers like David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick and Ray Harryhausen, and Grant shares what it's like to witness the first and only take of a devastatingly emotional Oscar-nominated acting performance! This conversation was recorded online in mid-July 2024. For the final episode of season 1 I dig deep into the theme of critic identity, in a bid to really illustrate how beneficial it is to gain alternative perspectives to the false norm of the straight white male. My guest Guy Lodge is a very established critic whose queer perspective challenges the heteronormative assumptions of both mainstream filmmaking and traditional criticism. This week we discuss the initially overlooked queer themes of The Power Of The Dog; queer cinema then and now - including how it might have been critically received back in the day; the surprise queer reading of The Babadook movie, the impact of AIDS on criticism at the height of the crisis, and how in general, filmmakers are still resisting realistic representations of queer sex onscreen. On today's Episode we speak to Kelly Dalton, Director Talent Relations & Awards at Netflix. Kelly is a powerhouse - driven, competitive, intelligent and compassionate - Kelly has taken a non-traditional path to an AMAZING career. We all can learn a lot from her - whether you're interested in the intricacies of Hollywood, or the intention and mindset behind setting a personal goal - this conversation is worth a listen. Bio: Kelly Dalton began her career in entertainment in 2014 at an awards agency called LTLA Communications, a company founded by prominent Awards Strategist Lisa Taback. Kelly worked on many award winning films including Lady Bird, La La Land, and Best Picture winners Spotlight and Moonlight. In 2019 Kelly moved over to Netflix and became the Director of Talent Relations & Awards on the Netflix Awards team. Kelly helped nurture and grow industry relationships with the streamer and helped break down the barriers of entry for a streamer to be considered for Best Picture at the Oscars. Although it wasn't easy for the industry to adjust to a new way of viewing films, the Academy and guilds slowly began to understand the value and importance of having quality films on a streaming service. At Netflix Kelly has worked on Roma, The Irishman, Marriage Story, The Two Popes, Period End of Sentence, My Octopus Teacher, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, The Trial of Chicago 7, Mank, The Power Of The Dog an most recently All Quiet On The Western Front. Netflix has been the most nominated studio for the last three years and has had many record breaking nominations that push the boundaries of cinema. Spotlight with Jane Campion: can creativity help us leap outside ourselves?Multiple academy award winning writer and director Jane Campion (The Piano The Power of the Dog) joins Emile and Lloyd for a fascinating conversation on creativity and how it can change and enhance our understanding of each other. Jane explains her creative practices and in particular her use of dream therapy to tap into the subconscious and write characters like Phil Burbank, the protagonist in The Power of the Dog, her 2022 Academy Award-winning film.Emile and Jane have worked closely together on television series and films. Emile, an Academy Award winning producer (The King's Speech) describes creativity as an extraordinary movement towards the lives of others. “It's an incredibly powerful muscle that forces you outside of yourself and into the most generous version of other experiences, as you can't create rich and believable characters unless you know them from the inside out. “I was excited to get on someone on the podcast who can talk to us in a deep way about creativity, and what it might offer for better understanding points of view we disagree with. And by far the best person I could think of is Jane.”Guest: Jane CampionJane Campion was born in New Zealand and has directed many feature films including THE PIANO, for which she won the Palme D'Or at Cannes, becoming the first woman to receive this award. The film was nominated for 9 Academy Awards, including nominations for Campion for Best Director & Best Original Screenplay, the latter of which she won.Her most recent film, THE POWER OF THE DOG (2022) received 12 Academy Award nominations including for Best Director which Jane won. The film also won Best Film at the BAFTA. Her other films include AN ANGEL AT MY TABLE which won 7 prizes at the 47th Venice Film Festival, including the Silver Lion; THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY which closed the 53rd Venice Film Festival and won the Francesco Pasinetti Award; and HOLY SMOKE which was nominated for the Golden Lion at the 56th Venice Film Festival and won the Elvira Notari Prize. The two season limited-series TOP OF THE LAKE which Campion created, co-wrote, executive produced and directed 5 of the 12 episodes, received 8 Emmy Award nominations and premiered at Sundance, Berlin and Cannes Film Festivals.Jane was President of the Jury at 54th Venice Film Festival and returned in 2008 as a Jury Member.~~ You can be part of the discussion @PofCharity on Twitter, @PrincipleofCharity on Facebook and @PrincipleofCharityPodcast on Instagram. However, back in 1993, she made a huge splash with her beautifully haunting film "The Piano," starring Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neill & Anna Paquin. Becoming the first woman ever to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, the film would also earn two additional Academy Awards for Best Actress (Holly Hunter) and Best Supporting Actress (Anna Paquin, who was only eleven at the time). What did we think of the film, revisiting it all of these years later? What did we think of the themes, characters, music, cinematography, and its awards season run? Jane Campion's “The Power of the Dog” opens like a classic Western: cattle are herded across the sweeping plains of Montana, with imposing mountains in the distance. But the plot of the film, based on a 1967 novel by Thomas Savage, isn't exactly a Western. It's a family drama about two brothers who share in the ranching business but couldn't be more different, and what happens when one of them brings his new wife and her teen-age son to live on the ranch. “The Power of the Dog” is nominated for twelve Academy Awards, the most of any film this year, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. Campion talks with David Remnick about Benedict Cumberbatch's starring performance; her experience working with Harvey Weinstein, and how #MeToo has changed the film industry; and why she'd really like to direct a comedy. Plus, Caetano Veloso, a living giant of Brazilian music, was recently profiled for The New Yorker by Jonathan Blitzer. The staff writer picks some key tracks from Veloso's vast catalogue that illuminate his long career.

Please, leave the extinct rat extinct, plus Joro spiders to fall from the sky this Spring on the East Coast? Christian Siriano has created a tulle dress to auction off for Ukraine. Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher have raised more than $20 million for Ukraine. Dawn reviews "Power of the Dog."
How did a small, idiosyncratic western family drama directed by someone who had not done a feature film in more than a decade become this year's Oscar front-runner?? Campion has now become the first woman to receive two nominations for Best Director – her previous one was more than 27 years ago for The Piano. The story takes place in 1920s Montana and is mainly focused on two brothers who run a cattle ranch, the woman one of them falls in love with, and her troubled son….or is he? It stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Kirsten Dunst, and Kodi Smit-McPhee… each of whom also received Oscar nominations for their exemplary work. An unseen presence looming over the two friends, a man who has definitely ridden a dang horse, a larger than life character about whom many have speculated…are we talking about Bronco Hosley or Bronco Henry? Trolls impresario and Vanity Fair critic Richard Lawson makes his tenth (!!) appearance on the pod to unpack Jane Campion's “The Power of the Dog.” Did Campion figure out the best use of Benedict Cumberbatch's screen presence? Is anthrax the poison with the coolest name? Can you imagine Gerard Depardieu starring in this - it's apparently his favorite book! All that, plus our final Campion rankings and the announcement of our next series. Happy Women's History Month film buds,This week we begin our new theme, Women in Film, to commemorate and celebrate the fantastic achievements of women in the film industry. Despite the growth in diversity both in front and behind the camera, there's still more that can be done. We want to help elevate the impact women have on the industry by highlighting films old and new that were directed by women. And we're starting with two films from last year.Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog, based on a Thomas Savage novel of the same name, is a simmering Western of taut tension. The film has been been garnering critical acclaim and racking up award nominations and wins for its cast and its director. We'll look at the themes the movie plays with, Revisionist Westerns, and the director herself, Jane Campion. Our second film travels overseas to Julia Ducournau's decidedly French film Titane. We discussed the film briefly last week, but we couldn't stop thinking about it. So now, we're going to talk about it more. It is a sort of fantasy film, dabbling faintly in magical realism in a way unlike most anything else out there. It is an effective body-horror story that uses the body for a discussion on sex, relationships, and much more.As another part of our celebration, we'll also be releasing a personal piece written by Friend of the Show Madelaine Davis. Titled "The Women on Screen, the Woman in the Mirror", Madelaine talks about what representation meant and means to her and all women identifying people. It was originally part of our newsletter, but we decide to share it with y'all this Saturday. Beyond our reviews we also talk about the Oscars, 20th Century Studios new release schedule, What We're Watching, and more. As always, don't forget to check out last week's episode. Last, be sure to check out thefilmbuds.com on March 7 for Paul's written review of the upcoming horror film The Seed. Thanks y'allThe BudsEpisode GuideIntro & Women's History Month - 00:00The Power of the Dog Clip - 10:41The Power of the Dog Review - 11:10Titane Review - 47:18What We're Watching, the Oscars, 20th Century Studios and Disney +, and more - 01:17:15Total Runtime - 01:45:52Be a Friend to the Film Buds:thefilmbuds.comthefilmbudspodcast@gmail.compatreon.com/thebudsthefilmbuds.bandcamp.com@filmbuds on Twitter@thefilmbudspodcast on InstagramPaul's Letterboxd
