Episode 301 – Chair Company, Bagonia & the Anxiety of Being Extremely Online Matt and Bob are back “to pod” and this week they're double-featuring two very different brands of unhinged: Tim Robinson's The Chair Company on HBO and Yorgos Lanthimos' new black comedy Bagonia. First up, they break down why Chair Company's pilot might be an all-timer — deviled eggs, mall-restaurant discourse, wheelbarrow talk, and HR meetings about accidental upskirt eye contact — but why the season's tone, length, and “Scrooge porn” detours make it a tougher hang than I Think You Should Leave or Friendship. There's bouncer Mike, Wazy Wanes, giant wieners, and the eternal question: how many huge bits are too many huge bits? Then they head into the basement with Bagonia, digging into Jesse Plemons' beautifully weird performance, Emma Stone's corporate-speak alien CEO, and a story that sits somewhere between Ari Aster dread and Wes Anderson precision. They unpack conspiracy-brain vs. Big Pharma, torture in a foil-lined basement, corporate “no PTO, but take all the time you need” doublespeak, and an ending that somehow manages to combine telekinesis, exploding heads, and puffy tribunal aliens in a way that's both dark and oddly funny. Along the way, the guys shout out Jim Downey's late-career run, Will Tracy's Onion/Succession DNA, and close with a few rapid-fire watches on their radar: Train Dreams, J. Kelly, Task, Hamnet, and the Safdies' Christmas chaos ride Marty Supreme. If you've ever fallen down a conspiracy rabbit hole, worked in a soul-sucking office, or just love watching deeply weird men completely derail their lives, this one's for you

Matt's Movie Lodgecast Episode Number 200 is upon us! For this, we picked the highly anticipated and prestigious film Bugonia from Greek god and director Yorgos Lanthimos. For this film, Yorgos has remade a 2003 South Korean movie called Save the Green Planet! Jesse Plemons plays a conspiracy theorist who, along with his cousin, abducts the CEO of the pharmaceutical company played by Emma Stone. Plemons' character delves into all sorts of alien conspiracy theories as Emma Stone's character tries to convince him otherwise. The film also stars Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone. It's another strange Yorgos vision with a wild ending that we'll spoil in this 200th episode!
“What happens when two beekeepers kidnap a pharmaceutical CEO because they think she's an alien?”That's the jaw-dropping premise of Bugonia, the film Ben Rogers watched on his flight—and the crew is here to break it down in this can't-miss episode of The Ben and Skin Show with Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray.Ben's in-depth review of Bugonia—why Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone deliver Oscar-worthy performances, and how the shocking final five minutes flip the entire movie on its head. A fascinating discussion on internet conspiracy culture, deconstruction in film, and why this movie might be the most unpredictable ride of the year.

Josh is joined by Yorgos Lanthimos Correspondents Haley Jones and Elijah Howard for a double feature. First, they discuss Lanthimos' latest collaboration with Emma Stone, “Bugonia,” (Beginning-57:48) including how effective he was in telling a story set in something resembling our modern times including its commentary on male isolation and conspiracy theories, the performances from the cast that included Stone and Jesse Plemons, if the film's bold ending paid off and much more! Then, they talk about Lynn Ramsey's “Die My Love” (57:49-End) including its depiction of post-partum depression, if its non-linear style served the story well, Jennifer Lawrence's bold performance and much more!
'Bugonia' star Jesse Plemons does a deep dive on his conspiracy-theorist character and going toe-to-toe with Emma Stone, and director Yorgos Lanthimos explains what made this movie more complicated than his other recent projects. Plus, Awardist host Gerrad Hall and EW Sr. Editor Joyce Eng break down the huge opening weekend for 'Wicked: For Good' and discuss the career of Eddie Murphy, who will be AFI's latest Life Achievement Award winner. 25 movies and 0 hits: it's been a particularly rough quarter for Hollywood. But as I discuss with the cultural commentator David Masciotra, it's actually been a pretty strong quarter in terms of movie quality. From Paul Thomas Anderson's “One Battle After Another” and Jennifer Lawrence's astonishing performance in “Die My Love” to a glitteringly bald Emma Stone in “Bugonia” and Ethan Coen's “Honey Don't!”, Hollywood is producing high quality, relevant material. One problem, however, is that Gen Z has abandoned cinema. Another is that Hollywood's penchant for movies dominated by memorably uncompromising female leads like Stone and Lawrence might be out of step with a broader culture still imprisoned by a nostalgia for a dominant masculinity. Perhaps that's why “One Battle After Another”, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio as a pathetically redundant Sixties radical, is the one hit of the season. And it may also be why the excellent Springsteen biopic, “Deliver Me From Nowhere”, featuring a clueless Bruce trying to find himself by recording “Nebraska”, was such a flop. No, men don't matter, either in Hollywood or in life. Even when they do. One Battle After Another (Paul Thomas Anderson) The season's sole commercial success ($70 million) works because it satirizes everyone. DiCaprio's incompetent ‘60s radical provides comic relief, but it's Chase Infinity's cynical Gen Z daughter who steals the film (even if Gen Z'ers have given up going to the movies). Anderson's Pynchon adaptation makes absurdity central to American identity, both then and now—the villainous Christmas Adventures Club in golf attire perfectly capturing MAGA's ridiculousness.Die My Love (Josephine Decker) Jennifer Lawrence delivers an astonishing performance confirming she's among Hollywood's greatest actors. The film died at the box office despite critical praise—perhaps because audiences resistant to female-dominated narratives won't show up even for exceptional work like this. Her assertiveness and complexity highlights exactly what's missing from contemporary male performances.Bugonia (Yorgos Lanthimos) Emma Stone continues her fearless run in this cultish, visually striking film. Her performance demonstrates creative risk-taking unavailable to today's male leads. Jesse Plemons plays the archetypal basement-dwelling conspiracy theorist—masculine id of our internet age. Its commercial failure suggests audiences aren't ready for cinema that interrogates rather than celebrates American mythology.Honey Don't! (Ethan Coen) Coen's lesbian B-movie homage to film noir, which David Masciotra loved, deserved better than its catastrophic box office. Margaret Qualley's detective becomes a feminist hero fighting idiotic patriarchy without losing entertainment value. Set in Bakersfield and focused on religious hypocrisy, it feels both familiar and innovative. Its death proves even clever, relevant films can't entice Gen Z'ers back to the movies.Deliver Me From Nowhere (James Mangold) The season's most revealing failure. The film captures Springsteen's Faustian bargain—trading artistic integrity for superstardom, making “Nebraska” his final serious work before “Born in the USA”'s commercial conquest. It depicts fierce masculine anxiety through Bruce's mentally ill, violent father and his own depression. Yet it bored audiences with its introspective approach—ultimate proof that even films about masculine crisis can't reach audiences imprisoned by nostalgia for an imaginary American masculinity that never existed. This week on Barely Cinematic, we descend into the beautifully unhinged universe of Bugonia. A film where conspiracy, delusion, and extraterrestrial paranoia hold hands and skip into the void. Mike also shares what scene made him unexpectedly emotional. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about Bugonia starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. It’s about two conspiracy-obsessed men kidnap the CEO of a major company when they become convinced that she's an alien who wants to destroy Earth. Mike talks about why Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons performances were next level, whether it was worth it to see in 35 mm and why he is okay with overhyping this movie. In the Trailer Park, Mike talks about Send Help starring Rachel McAdams. She plays an overworked and unappreciated employee belittled by her boss, played by Dylan O’Brien. The feuding co-workers crash-land on a deserted island and have to work together or die trying. The new conspiracy-laden film ‘Bugonia' has been described by critics and audiences alike as “bleak.” But the comedy writer who penned the script doesn't see it that way. In this episode, Will Tracy shares how he went from ‘The Onion's' editor-in-chief to winning Emmys for ‘Last Week Tonight' and ‘Succession' to writing the mind-bending script for Yorgos Lanthimos' latest collaboration with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. He discusses ‘Bugonia's' very 2025 political message and unpacks what could be considered a deeply cynical ending that he finds oddly hopeful about the future of the planet—if not humanity. Tracy also explains why he found writing for John Oliver so miserable, how he managed to identify with Kendall Roy on ‘Succession,' and what it feels like to act opposite Jeremy Strong. The battle for Warner Bros. Discovery is seeing a new champion enter the ring, with Netflix making some moves to put their own bid in for the studio's properties. According to Reuters, the streaming pioneer engaged with investment bank Moelis & Co. in order to prepare an offer. Ironically, this is the same bank that worked with David Ellison at Skydance to take over Paramount whose first bid to buy Warner Bros. Discovery was rejected. It was the worst weekend at the box office this year, with ticket sales coming in at just $52.4 million. This also makes it the lowest-grossing Halloween weekend in 31 years, excluding theater closures due to COVID in 2020. While new film Regretting You took in a respectable $50 million, Black Phone 2 really has the crown from the weekend having now brought in $104 million globally - another huge win for horror this year. Yorgos Lanthimos' new film Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, is sitting at a small $11.1 million globally after breaking into more theaters. Both Scream 7 and Stranger Things Season 5 released trailers recently. Stranger Things' official trailer showed us a bit more of what to expect from that property and Scream 7, which releases on February 27, 2026, gave us a glance at the returning original cast members of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, and David Arquette. As we discussed last week, Stranger Things will release in three parts on holiday weekends, four episodes on November 26, three episodes on Christmas Day, and the finale on New Year's Eve.A 'Conjuring' prequel film is in development at Warner Bros. and New Line, with short film director Rodrigue Huart in talks to direct. Franchise veterans Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who co-wrote the two prior “Conjuring” films, 2023's “The Nun II” and this September's “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” are on board to pen the screenplay. After landing the rights to turn one of the world's biggest video games into an epic movie, Paramount has now landed two A-list filmmakers to develop it. Sources tell Deadline that Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and Peter Berg have joined Paramount and Activision to develop and produce a Call of Duty movie, with Paramount distributing a live-action feature film.Hulu has ordered two more seasons of the revived King of the Hill animated series, the 16th and 17th overall and third and fourth seasons as a streaming original. Season 14 premiered in August and is the first half of Hulu's initial two-season, 20-episode order; season 15 is set to debut in 2026.Sam Mendes' four Beatles films have filled out the cast by adding the spouses of the four band members. The film will once again be written, directed and produced by the same team behind 2023's “Godzilla Minus One.” Currently, there are no plot details, but the studio is currently targeting a release date in late 2026.Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are going back to the desert for The Mummy 4. With a screenplay by Will Tracy, the film is an English-language remake of the 2003 South Korean film "Save the Green Planet!" by Jang Joon-hwan that had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its compelling performances, pitch-black comedic writing, and otherworldly direction from Lanthimos. Put on your conspiracy theory hats and tune in as we discuss these elements, its themes, tone, messaging, craftsmanship, awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Bugonia stars Emma Stone as a high-powered CEO who's kidnapped by conspiracy theorists, one of whom is played by Jesse Plemons. The conflict grows more and more complex and intense — and, given that this is a Yorgos Lanthimos movie, it gets 1) very dark; and 2) very weird.
