fWotD Episode 2896: William D. Hoard Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 9 April 2025 is William D. Hoard.William Dempster Hoard (October 10, 1836 – November 22, 1918) was an American politician, newspaper publisher, and agriculture advocate who served as the 16th governor of Wisconsin from 1889 to 1891. Called the "father of modern dairying", Hoard's advocacy for scientific agriculture and the expansion of dairy farming has been credited with changing Wisconsin's agricultural economy. He promoted the use of silos and alfalfa for cattle feed, testing for bovine tuberculosis, and raising particular breeds of cattle for milk or meat in his magazine Hoard's Dairyman. His work with the Wisconsin Dairymen's Association led to the export of Wisconsin dairy products to the East Coast and they earned national renown. As editor of his newspaper, the Jefferson County Union, Hoard defied trends of the time for small newspapers by expanding the coverage area of the paper and including a strongly voiced editorial page, which he used to advocate for improved farming practices and dairy farming. As governor of Wisconsin, Hoard established the Dairy and Food Commission—one of the first food inspection agencies in the United States—and passed a controversial, short-lived compulsory education law that required all students in the state to be taught in English as part of the Americanization process for immigrants. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Wednesday, 9 April 2025.For the full current version of the article, see William D. It is our deepest pleasure to bring you this episode on Norman Jewison's masterpiece of non-auteurism: Fiddler on the Roof. Both of the hosts have a long and complex relationship to both this film and its source material and could wax for hours on its rich humanism and craft. The tale of Tevye the Dairyman and his daughters remains as fascinating and exciting today as ever! We promise! This movie is not boring at all (except for maybe a couple scenes with Perchik). Topics include: changes from the original stories, Jerome Robbins' opening numbers, and a major change in Alana's life.

Real Science Exchange
Milk production responses of dairy cows to fatty acid supplements with different ratios of palmitic and oleic acids in low- and high-fat basal diets with Dr. Adam Lock, Michigan State University; Dr. Bill Weiss, Professor Emeritus, Ohio State University

In this study, two basal diets were fed, one low-fat and one high-fat. The low-fat diet contained cottonseed meal and cottonseed hulls and the high-fat diet contained whole cottonseed. This balanced fiber and protein to try and make the difference between the basal diets and just the fatty acids. Basal diets were supplemented with two different fat supplements that had different ratios of palmitic and oleic acids. The applied question at hand was “Does fat need to be supplemented to a high-fat basal diet?” (5:32)The low-fat diet contained 1.93% fatty acids and the high-fat diet contained 3.15% fatty acids. Fatty acid supplements were fed at 1.5% of dry matter and replaced soyhulls. The palmitic acid supplement contained 80% palmitic acid and 10% oleic acid. The palmitic + oleic acid supplement contained 60% palmitic acid and 30% oleic acid. Thirty-six cows were used in a split-plot Latin square design, with half the cows on each basal diet. Under each split-plot, cows were allocated to a 3x3 Latin square, evaluating a control treatment (no fat supplement), palmitic acid supplement, and palmitic + oleic acid supplement. (8:46)Bill, Adam, and Clay discuss the increase in milk components the industry has experienced recently due to the powerful combination of genetics and nutrition. Hoard's Dairyman reported that 2024 was the first year that the U.S. had averaged over 4% milk fat going back to 1924 when records began. (13:01)Both fat supplements increased milk yield in low-fat and high-fat basal diets, but the magnitude of the increase was larger in the low-fat diet. The high palmitic acid diet increased milk yield more in cows fed the low-fat basal diet than the palmitic + oleic supplement did. High-fat basal diet cows had similar milk yield responses to both fatty acid supplements. The panel discusses the industry emphasis on milk components and if/when a threshold in performance might happen given the advancement of genomics and nutrition. (15:51)Clay asks Adam to remind the listeners about the relationship between fatty acids and crude fat or ether extract. Adam recommends moving away from ether extract and focusing solely on fatty acid content. Bill, Adam, and Clay talk about the variability in the fatty acid content of various feedstuffs. (25:33)Bill asks if the feed efficiency improvement with the fat supplementation was due to more of a gross energy or digestible/metabolizable energy effect. Adam suggests it may be a little of both. The diet is more energy-dense, but we also know now that some of those specific fatty acids have specific effects. Improvements in NDF digestibility are consistently observed with palmitic acid supplementation. Oleic acid improves fatty acid absorption and has an impact on adipose tissue metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Bill and Adam go on to talk more philosophically about the best way to measure feed efficiency in dairy cows. (29:02)If Adam could do this experiment over again, he would have pushed the basal fat levels a bit more and had both lower-producing and higher-producing cows in the experiment. This leads to a discussion of how the results might have differed if distiller grains or soybeans were used instead of cottonseed in the experiment. Listeners should be careful not to extrapolate the results from this experiment to other fat sources. (33:55)Adam emphasizes that we shouldn't be afraid of feeding high-fat diets, either basal or supplemental fatty acids, especially to high-producing cows. We should be very mindful about where those fatty acids are coming from. We could provide the same nutrients by feeding either cottonseed or distillers grains, but how those ingredients feed out could be very different. (38:38)In summary, Clay agrees we should take a fresh look at how much fat we're feeding cows in basal diets and underlines the importance of the source of supplemental fatty acids. Bill concurs and commends Adam's group for basically making cottonseed without fat in the low-fat basal diet, which allowed for very clean interpretations of the fatty acid supplement results. Adam underlines that we can feed higher fat diets, but the fatty acid profile of all of those ingredients we might use is going to be key. In addition to fatty acids in diets and supplements, de novo synthesis of milk fat from acetate is the other half of the equation. Bringing those together might be a strategy to keep up with genetic improvements and drive higher milk fat yield. During her illness Richmond often visited her and talked with her, and these discussions inspired him to write the book.

During her illness Richmond often visited her and talked with her, and these discussions inspired him to write the book.

In this episode, you'll hear from Wisconsin dairy farmer Mack Drees of Drees Dairy Farm. Mack is the “cow guy” on his family dairy. When he came home from college, the dairy needed to expand but didn't want to have to manage more people. They decided to milk with robots in their new expansion. Mack talks about whether he thinks it's better to bite off a whole bunch of technology at once when going with robots or if staged adoption of technology is preferable. He also gives his answer as to whether the activity monitoring has paid for itself more in repro improvements or if cow health improvements for his registered Holstein herd are returning more of an investment. This podcast was recorded during the 2022 National Holstein Convention in South Dakota this past summer. Mack was a participant on the Data and Innovation Summit producer panel. Listen to that panel here. Here is a breakdown of the episode: Tell us about your farm. [~1:45]Give us your experience transitioning your farm to milking robots. [~3:00]If you had to do it over again, would you stairstep into technology or make a big leap into it all at one time? Why? [~5:00]How long did it take for cows to get used to the robots? [~6:45]At what age do you put your activity monitors on? [~9:00]Explain your experience of using activity monitoring to dial in optimum breeding time. [~10:00]In what ways is technology already providing a payback on your farm? [~11:15]Do you think you get more of a payback from activity monitoring on the health or repro side of your farm? [~14:15]In your opinion, how can farmers best utilize sort gates with monitoring? [~15:45]Talk about how you do regular milk testing with your robots. [~19:45]Explain your farm's three-pronged approach to evaluating technology. [~25:00]Describe how activity monitoring quantified the value of treatment vs. prevention. [~31:00]What's a decision you need to make in the upcoming months? [~33:30] Follow Drees Dairy Farm online: www.facebook.com/dreesdairy

We've finally reached our very first episode! To kick off the Dairy Podcast Show, I had a great conversation with Dr. Mike Hutjens, who is heralded as one of the most influential people in dairy nutrition and dairy management in the past 50 years. In this episode, we focus mainly on the principal advances in fiber utilization in dairy rations, one of the hot topics in dairy nutrition research and practice. We also discussed some key aspects of corn silage utilization by lactating cows and how that has evolved over recent years. Of course, we also looked back on Dr. Hutjens' outstanding career as an educator and asked him for some insights on becoming an excellent communicator."Some of the most critical people we have on dairy farms are the feeders." – Dr. Mike Hutjens

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF COMPOSER: Jerry Bock LYRICIST: Sheldon Harnick BOOK: Joseph Stein SOURCE: Sholem Aleichem's short stories Tevye the Dairyman (1894) DIRECTOR: Jerome Robbins CHOREOGRAPHER: Jerome Robbins PRINCIPLE CAST: Maria Karnilova (Golde), Joanna Merlin (Tzeitel), Zero Mostel (Tevye), OPENING DATE: Sep 22, 1964 CLOSING DATE: Jul 02, 1972 PERFORMANCES: 3,242 SYNOPSIS: Tevye, the local milkman, has five daughters that must enter into arranged marriages as dictated by the traditions of his culture. When Tzeitel, his eldest, chooses to make her own match, Tevye's world is turned upside down and traditions become vulnerable. After acclaimed musical successes commissioned by producers, Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock set out to write a musical which was of personal, familial interest to them. Based on a series of short stories by Sholem Alecheim, Fiddler on the Roof explores the importance of Jewish traditions to the inhabitants of a small, Russian village. Beth Burrier summarizes the complex identities of Jewish-American theatre artists working on Broadway, many of whom were attacked by the House Un-American Activities Committee or faced other forms of antisemitic discrimination in their lives. Although a liberal wave saw an onslaught of Jewish-American stories on Broadway, Fiddler on the Roof was deemed risky by producers because its characters were Russian villagers, not Americans. Upon opening with a seismic performance by the blacklisted Zero Mostel, and despite a pleased general public, Yiddish writers took issue with the liberal message of the show. Work by director/ choreographer Jerome Robbins posited the piece as a new sort of musical, where the authors took a back seat to the vision of the director. Beth Burrier is head of musical theatre at Manhattanville College in Purchase New York, and a principal conductor and the Associate Artistic Director of the College Light Opera Company in Falmouth, Massachusetts. She holds a Master of Music summa cum laude from Ithaca College, and a Bachelor of Music Education summa cum laude with honors from Otterbein University. Beth has been on the faculty at Baldwin Wallace and Penn State, and has taught Music Theatre History, Music Theory, Acting the Song, Audition Technique, Voice and Piano. Heigh- Ho, western fans! This week on Fabulous Film and friends we're going to circle back and discuss Jane Campion's 2021 comeback effort and Oscar frontrunner, The Power of The Dog starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Kirsten Dunst and Kodi Smit-McPhee. It was mentioned on our year in review last week as a top film, but no time was spent hunkering down on its finer points.  I'm yer host Gino Caputi and joining me on this conceptual cattle drive is my sister and unabashed Jane Campion lover Roseanne Caputi, don't get her started on The Piano, Son of a Dairyman and grandson to one of Eastern Oregon's great cattle barons David Johnson, D.M.D., New Plymouth Idaho's own Burton Brown, no stranger to cow manure he. And a man who wore a cowboy hat once in a Penn State black box theater reimagining of As You Like It, GORDON ALEX ROBERTSON!Just do you don't get lost: The synopsis In The Power of The Dog, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons play Phil and George Burbank, respectively, two rich Montana cattle ranchers who on a drive with their ranch hands, stop in a town called Beech where they dine and sleep at an Inn run by a suicide widow Rose Gordon and her lisping, paper flower-making son, Peter.  Phil is cruel and derisive of Rose's sensitive son, while George is understanding and serves as a shoulder for Rose to cry on after Phil and his team of cowpolks clear out.  Rose and George form an attachment and are soon married, causing Phil to withdraw from the family and to treat Rose and her son in an even pettier and wickeder manner.  Phil's treatment of Rose drives her to take up drinking and, in an effort to gall Rose, perhaps to the point of madness and death, Phil takes Peter under his wing.  Teaching Peter to ride and to build fences like a true cow polk, Phil seems to succeed in his plan until he is completely blindsided by the far more hard-edged and formidable Peter. What's it all about? What is The Power of The Dog? Find out!

When entering the ministry back in 1983, I had Dad's wise counsel to help my beginnings. His counsel ran the path of short and pithy statements, one of which was “a home visiting pastor makes a churchgoing people.”This came to mind when I was writing yesterday about our graveyard in Rosedale and mentioned visiting our church patriarch, Sam Westra. Taking Dad's advice, I made it a habit to visit the flock there in rural Wisconsin, and those visits were indispensable to my care for their souls.Back then pastoral visits were still possible in a way they aren't as much now. Rosedale was a farm community, so if I stopped in to see the couple, the man of the house was often in the barn or milk parlor and could come in...
