On episode 507 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Dr. Emily Werthman, PhD, RN, CBRN, a dedicated Certified Burn Registered Nurse (CBRN) and the Patient Care Manager and Burn Program Manager at the Johns Hopkins Burn Center in Baltimore. In the course of their conversation, Keith and Dr. Werthman discuss the growth of the CBRN credential, the anticipation that the CBRN certification will be nationally accredited and Magnet-accepted in 2025, and the crucial role that nurses play in elevating burn care to new levels of expertise and professionalism. They also discuss the many types of burns that burn nurses may encounter, some of which may not immediately come to mind, but are nonetheless more common than we think. Burns rank 6th among the ten top preventable injury-related deaths in the United States, with 398,000 people receiving treatment for burns each year. For those nurses who choose to dedicate themselves to this nursing specialty, there is a respected and rigorous certification process and a plethora of possibilities for a fascinating career path as a CBRN. We have some amazing guests coming out over the next four weeks and we are very excited for Season 4.  Following todays post with Rebecca Hoffberger we have three more great Marylanders, Keiffer Mitchell, Pat Moran and James Williams of the Amerrican Cancer Society.  Stay tuned for these Tuesday  releases over the next few weeks as we get in the studio with some great new guests. It's so great to Welcome the great Rebecca Hoffberger.  A visionary for the Visionaries, Visionary Artists that is, she's established one of the most unique treasured Museums in the Country. Rebecca is someone that Rev. Al and I have both known for a long time. She was married to an incredible man who also had vision the late Leroy Hoffberger, father to one of my best friends Doug Hoffberger... Smaltimore... Rebecca has done an incredible job with the American Visionary Arts Museum, how about this fact, AVAM is second to the BMA when it comes to visitors and that's saying something given the incredible Museums we have in Baltimore.  Rebecca is gifted and she has the most beautiful soul, she's traveled the world and worked with some incredible minds.   A life-long devotee of the power of intuition and fresh thought, Hoffberger was accepted into college at age 15 though chose instead the personal invitation of internationally renowned mime Marcel Marceau, to become his first American apprentice in Paris. By 19, Rebecca had co-founded her own ballet company and by 21, was a sought-after consultant to a broad spectrum of nonprofits, including research and development scientific companies. At 25, she was awarded the title of “Dame” for her work to establish medical field hospitals in Nigeria. She studied alternative and folk medicine in Mexico. Returning to the States, Hoffberger served on the Board of the Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Center in Virginia and worked as Development Director at the Sinai Hospital's Department of Psychiatry for People Encouraging People, where she first conceived her unique national visionary museum/education center. In recognition of this distinguished achievement in the museum field, Hoffberger was awarded the 2011 Katherine Coffey Award by the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums. Hoffberger has received Honorary Doctorates from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Stevenson University, Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, and McDaniel College, as well as awarded Loyola College's Andrew White Award—the school's highest civic honor—the College of Notre Dame Sarah's Circle Award, and was selected as Franklin & Marshall College's Conrad Nelson Lecturer. She is an inductee into the Maryland Women's Hall of Fame, a winner of the Urban Land Institute's National Award for Excellence, Israel Bonds' Golda Meir Award, and the first recipient of the Sir Arthur C. Clarke Vision and Imagination Award. Any questions, we get into lots of things, there's so much to talk about, both Rev. Al and I are thrilled to know and call Rebecca a good friend.  Thanks Rebecca! You're gonna love this one! Enjoy!

I didn't want to be like my family. I didn't want to be like my father.”“In high school, I realized this goal to become an NFL player wouldn't be realized unless I graduated from high school, attended a decent university, and was able to perform,” he says.“I wound up entering this center called the Ambrose Outreach Community Center, and I was offered a job to be a tutor. Now, mind you, I couldn't read. I was pretty much failing everything,” Mayo recalls. The opportunity to teach first and second-graders how to read allowed him to learn to read. “I wound up becoming in the top 10 percent of my class and the first person in my family to go off to college.”“Everything that I do is informed from my upbringing,” he says, noting that in 2015, he changed the direction of Mentoring Mentors to focus on helping high school students become mentors to junior high school students. He calls the program “near-to-peer mentoring.”The profound insight recognizes that the younger kids respond to mentors near their age better than they do to adults, while at the same time, the older students learn to flex leadership muscles they didn't know they had. Older and younger students alike gain tremendous benefits. The program is relatively small today, but that is by design, Mayo says: I think about all of the friends I've lost, all of the teammates that I played with who were far more talented than me. I just know if we want to change that, it has to be deep-rooted work. And so our work is really, really deep. It's not wide, but it's deep.Throughout this work that now spans a decade, Mayo has been using a superpower he discovered in high school: he can use his voice to change the world. He can speak!Mayo will speak at SuperCrowdBaltimore on March 21st at the B&O Rail Museum. Register now using the discount code SUPERCROWD to save 30 percent. AI Episode Summary1. Alphonso Mayo, also known as "Mayo," is the CEO and founder of Mentoring Mentors, a nonprofit in Maryland that focuses on inspiring young people to become the best versions of themselves.2. Mentoring Mentors initially served high school athletes but later shifted to a near-to-peer mentorship model where young people are trained to mentor even younger individuals.3. The organization's current mission is to develop the next generation of community leaders with a focus on exposure, personal/social/emotional development, and leadership development.4. Mayo's own challenging upbringing in Baltimore, characterized by poverty, a lack of exposure, and familial struggles, deeply influences the work he does with youth today.5. After overcoming his own obstacles, including learning to read while mentoring first and second-graders, Mayo became the first in his family to attend college, showing the power of mentorship and perseverance.6. Mayo believes in creating a family-like atmosphere for young people, offering consistent and lifetime mentorship to help them navigate life's challenges and inspire them to achieve more.7. As a former athlete, Mayo discovered his speaking abilities unexpectedly during a football game, realizing he could influence and inspire his teammates effectively.8. Mayo advises that to use our voices effectively and reach our potential, we should write our plans down, not be afraid to fail, eliminate distractions, and be okay with incremental improvements (the 1 percent rule).9. To support Mentoring Mentors, Mayo invites viewers to visit the website at www.mentoring-mentors.org to donate and become monthly supporters.10. Mayo can be reached on social media platforms by typing in his name. His personal Instagram handle is @20mayo_mayo, and he invites people to directly email him at AlphonsoMayo@mentoring-mentors.org for strategic support and collaboration. If you think others could be inspired by Mayo's work, please share. How to Develop Speaking As a SuperpowerMayo shared the story of how he discovered his superpower:It was 2005 when I identified my superpower. Because I've always been an athlete, I've always been very outspoken. But I was a quiet leader. I just let my play speak for itself. There was one particular game in Baltimore we were playing a powerhouse school, Dunbar Poets. Man, they've been winning championships since I can remember; my school wasn't the best. I intentionally went to Northwestern to improve the culture of athleticism because that's what I was taught from my coach. Man, they were beating on us so bad. I had never spoken. I wasn't considered a team captain or anything. Then, at halftime, our coach came down and he pretty much just threw in the towel and just talked about how bad we were performing and how we didn't deserve it.Parents were concerned about their athletes' health because we were getting hit pretty brutal. I just took my helmet off, and I just spoke up. I'll never forget I said something along the lines of, “Somebody call my grandmother.” They didn't know what I was talking about. I told them that because I would much rather die.Showing them that I'm going to do everything in my power for them to not score again; I refused to quit. Any person out there that wanted to be a part of that, “Stand with me!” I was crying and things like that. But I think the fact that I said something like that inspired my teammates. Dunbar didn't score another point. We lost the game. But that was at that moment that I realized that my voice had power. So I would say speaking and speaking with authority and power is really my superpower. The story illustrates how the spoken word influences action and changes outcomes. It has power.Mayo offers some tips for developing your speaking.“When I walk into every classroom, the first thing I tell them is, you're a leader. You just don't know it yet. You just haven't discovered discovered it yet. I'm here to help you do that,” he says. When you want something, make it a goal. “ when you hear something that's in your heart that you want to do, you write it down.”“You don't have to know it all in order to achieve it all,” he says. “I think sometimes we psych ourselves out of our promise.” Just take it one step at a time.He suggests striving to follow the “1 percent rule,” getting 1 percent better every day, allowing you to make 365 percent improvement in a year. Finally, he suggests learning from people on parallel paths rather than resenting them. He says:I champion them, you know, and then even more importantly, I try to connect with them because every good coach has a coach, every good mentor has a mentor, every great pastor has a pastor, every great therapist has a therapist, every great doctor sees a doctor. So, who are we not to do the same?By following his example and advice, you can make speaking with power and authority a skill you can use. With practice, it can become a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileAlphonso Mayo:Founder and CEO, MENTORING MENTORS INCAbout MENTORING MENTORS INC: Mentoring Mentors Inc. After becoming disillusioned with the program, he traveled to Hawaii exploring the many islands and participating in another, similar, archaeological internship with identical results. At that point, Carpenter transferred to Stevenson University, seizing a merit scholarship in Maryland, changing his focus of study to an interdisciplinary degree in anthropology and religion. Following graduation, Carpenter determined he needed to master the craft of creative writing in order to intellectually liberate/express himself. His quest now is to write in multiple mediums (fiction, nonfiction, and screenwriting) in order deliver ideas and question the conventional human history/origin narrative to the widest possible audience. A new book, The Story of Mr. Thomas Carney, tells the story of his life for young readers. Steven Xavier Lee is the author. What acts as net to hold in your organs and innards, yet is rarely discussed? That's right – your pelvic floor! Many people are not aware of their pelvic floor, or the extent of issues that can come when it is damaged or injured. Without many conversations around this area of the body, it's not common knowledge that pelvic floor physical therapy can be life-changing, let alone an option in the first place. When you experience a big injury or things feel out of whack in your body, your medical providers will oftentimes refer you to a physical therapist. Physical therapy gives practical ways for people to rehabilitate from chronic pain, discomfort, or injuries, while naturally bringing more flexibility and movement into these areas – especially the pelvic floor. What Does a Pelvic Floor PT Do?Have you ever had a baby, or are planning on it someday?Do you ever have issues holding in your pee?Do you deal with frequent constipation? Is sex consistently painful for you?If you answered yes to any of these questions, then pelvic floor physical therapy may be for you. About Dr. Bolden-Jeffers:Alicia Bolden-Jeffers, DPT is a native of Baltimore City and currently resides in Owings Mills. Dr. Bolden-Jeffers is a graduate of Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University) with a B.S. of Biology and a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Howard University. Dr. Bolden-Jeffers has a strong passion for women's health especially pre- and postpartum care. She enjoys shopping, traveling, line dancing, Mixxed Fit, and most importantly spending time with her family as she is a mom of two precious kids (a toddler and infant). Her positive and negative experiences during her pregnancies and postpartum fueled her passion for wanting to advocate, educate, and treat women's health conditions. But Liasson says now she sees more caustic polarization than she ever has--sharpened, in her view, by former President Trump's claim that the 2020 election was stolen, and the choice of many elected Republicans to agree, without evidence: "We don't even have a common set of facts now. And that's really scary to me." Liasson will be in Baltimore a week from today for the Baltimore Speakers Series presented by Stevenson University. Today on the Currently Bossin' Podcast, we're chatting with Brittany Brown, an experiential entrepreneur who has put inclusivity at the helm of work in the beauty industry. After graduating from Stevenson University in 2013, Brittany enrolled in the Baltimore School of Massage to study esthetics. Shortly after, Brittany launched Monee' Cosmetics, a natural and organic skincare line. As a new beauty entrepreneur, Brittany struggled to find a space where a multicultural-women-owned indie brand could thrive in a market overrun by big names. In search of a niche in the beauty industry, Brittany founded Project Beauty Expo (PBE) in 2016 as an effort to create a support network for women of color who are interested in natural beauty, wellness, and healthy living. In just four years, PBE has grown into a substantial platform where bloggers, natural beauty enthusiasts, and cosmetic consumers connect, collaborate, and share ideas culminating in an annual expo showcasing indie beauty and wellness brands. PBE has secured sponsorship with global brands, Target and Shopify, and has been featured in outlets such as Forbes, Essence, CEW, WWD, among many others. Beauty is a $532 billion industry where brands are birthed every day, but Brittany understood that many indie brands struggle with starting, scaling, and sustaining their beauty business. After moving cross-country to Los Angeles in 2018, Brittany launched B. Brown Agency, a boutique marketing, and brand management agency where she helps indie brands build their digital presence and grow their sales. Be sure to rate and subscribe! Love our podcast? I'm sure that many of us have had experiences where we have either been hurt by someone else's assumptions about us or we have made assumptions about others rather than having a conversation. Often, when people make assumptions about others, it can be hurtful to the one the assumption is made about. But I want to encourage someone who is listening to don't ever allow others' assumptions about you to define you! You are defined by what God says about you- you are made in God's image; you are fearfully and wonderfully made (even if you have a physical challenge); you have everything you need because you belong to the creator and owner of the universe and everything in it! My Guest for this episode is Miss Joy Hall. She is a native of Baltimore, Maryland educated in the Baltimore County and Baltimore City public school systems. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University) in 2000and her Masters of Science Degree in Communications from Stevenson University in December of 2018. She is also a senior member of the newly founded ReLiving with CP Team which aims to prepare young adults with Cerebral Palsy for independent living, served as the 1989 National Easter Seals Poster Child, and was the first African American to represent Easter Seals. The topic is living with Cerebral Palsy and the triumphs and challenges faced throughout her life and career. Ms. Hall is also on the Executive Board of the Janet Hall Foundation. The Janet Hall Foundation was founded by entrepreneur Janet Hall of Baltimore, MD with a mission to assist breast cancer patients and their families in any way possible but focusing more on financial hardships. During the American Revolution, the Chesapeake Bay was a pirate's nest. The men who plied the Bay's waters had shifting loyalties, competing interests, and a keen sense of how to use the law to legitimize their actions. In fact, they are part of a much richer history of piracy in the Bay. From the seventeenth through the nineteenth century, pirates were a constant feature of Chesapeake society. They connected the Bay and its communities with the wider Atlantic world, and even to the Indian Ocean. And in later years, they battled local authorities for control of the Chesapeake's lucrative oyster trade. On today's episode, we're pleased to bring you the audio version of Jim Ambuske's live stream conversation with Dr. Jamie L. H. Goodall, Staff Historian for the US Army's Center of Military History.  Goodall is the author of the new book, Pirates of the Chesapeake Bay: From the Colonial Era to the Oyster Wars. She is a former Assistant Professor of History at Stevenson University in Baltimore, Maryland. Goodall is the author of Pirates of the Chesapeake Bay: From the Colonial Era to the Oyster Wars (The History Press, 2020). At UVA, Ambuske co-directed the 1828 Catalogue Project and the Scottish Court of Session Project.  He is the co-author with Randall Flaherty of "Reading Law in the Early Republic: Legal Education in the Age of Jefferson," in The Founding of Thomas Jefferson's University ed. by John A.
