“God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else. Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death. So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.” (James 1:12–18 NLT-SE)

No one holds a newborn baby in their arms and says, "I hope this child grows up to lose respect for me because of my addiction issues." Yet, things like this happen all the time. Why? Could it be that we failed to distance ourselves from the things that threaten to undo us? In this episode, Pastor Chris Kipp teaches a message entitled "Creating Distance Between You & Temptation" from James 1:12-18. James describes temptation like a fishing lure. It is all shiny and bright and so attractive, promising a satisfaction that will thrill us. What we cannot see are the hooks and line that will drag us to destruction. He tells us it is our desires that conceive sin and sin gives birth to death. Instead, we need to see that good and perfect gifts come from God.

Heb. 12:2 resonates once more in my soul - "Look to Jesus, He is the author and finisher of our faith!" He could see the "joy" that would come because of His sacrifice, yet He cried out for the Father to relieve Him of the moment. As the angel drew near, Jesus was strengthened! And "joy" overtook Him and we are blessed as we trust in Him!
Don’t stop at counting it all joy when you enter into a test or trial, for if we endure in it we are called blessed. The only difference between those that are blessed and those who are not is their endurance. Once we are approved there is a crown or reward waiting for us! So who does the approval and what is the criteria, and can we know when the approval has been reached? So much in these 7 verses and I hope you can be part of our study together, tonight at 7:30 PM in church or on Facebook Live.

James 1:12–18 reminds us that we can praise God because he does not change, even though our circumstances do. We can be confident that God will bring us through our difficulty knowing that He will finish the work in us that He started.

We often enter temptation the same time we enter testing. God tests us, but it is our own desires that we are tempted by. To give into temptation, is to give birth to sin, which leads to our own death. How can we withstand temptation?
