When Jesus is approached by the Pharisees, who love nice, neat, categories, black and white boxes, and is asked about a controversial topic, does Jesus give a nice, polished, clean, answer? Or does He speak to something greater about that topic?
Jesus’ Teaching On Divorce
Divorce is one of the topics that has been both painful and divisive for the church. Jesus is clear and decisive as He teaches about divorce, and as the people of God, we must be careful to listen and obey His Word. While Jesus is clear in His words, we must admit that the teaching can be painful and hard to embrace for some. But the promise, if we would have the faith to believe it, remains: marriage is designed by God, and in it we can find joy in Christ. Visit us online at: www.RenewalChurch.net

Jesus delivers a hard teaching on divorce to our modern ears. It was also hard on the ancient ears. Marriage, divorce, and singleness should all be taken seriously.

How’s your heart? How’s your heart toward singleness, marriage, divorce, remarriage, or adultery? Jesus had a lot to say about these topics. What is God’s intent for these relationships? His reign isn’t measured by how many people serve Him but by how many He serves. "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 (NLT)
Often Jesus would be tempted by the pharisees with difficult questions concerning their culture or the legal system. The question they propose in this passage is one that is still asked today....Is divorce allowable? This is an important question for us to ask because our marriages stand as a beautiful picture of Christ and the church. Often the world views Christianity in light of how their Christian neighbors live their everyday life. Jesus answers their question very clearly. He is not ambiguous on the matter. His words help us understand how God view marriage and divorce.

Last time, we found the Pharisees trying to trip up the Lord as they questioned Him about the subject of divorce. As we continue to examine what the Scriptures say about this, we'll delve into some of the consequences of divorce, and we'll discuss how God's grace fits in as well.

We have a tendency to always want to know what we can get away with, especially when it comes to relationships. Jesus always seems to redirect things to talk about why did He make relationships and marriage FOR? It's a complete perspective change, not a rulebook...

Jesus tackles a difficult (and meant to be tricky) question regarding marriage and divorce in front of the religious leaders. The questions around divorce and marriage are still difficult today, and Pastor Steve showed both God's standard from Genesis (as Jesus did) as well as God's grace for our failings in this opening section from Mark 10.
