Marriage and Divorce - Matthew 5:31-32
We're pulling back the curtain on military marriage and divorce, a world built on service and sacrifice but also one that silences and sidelines the spouses, most often women, who hold everything together while their partners serve. I'm thrilled to welcome Heather Sweeney to the podcast for this conversation, one I've been wanting to have for years. She's a writer, former military spouse, and the author of the upcoming memoir Camouflage: How I Emerged from the Shadows of a Military Marriage. Heather shares what it's really like to build a life around someone else's career, the toll of deployments, and the barriers military spouses face when seeking support. We also talk about losing your sense of self, navigating a system built on patriarchy that's designed to keep spouses dependent and invisible, and finding the strength to step into life on your own terms after divorce. Please know that this episode isn't just for military spouses. It's for anyone who has ever felt invisible in their own relationship or wondered what might happen if they stopped holding everything together. ✨ If you'd like to watch the video version of this episode, you can find it here. What you'll hear about in this episode: The unexpected ways military life might erode a spouse's identity and independence (2:27) An inside look at reintegration after deployment and the obstacles couples face when learning to live together again (6:50) The systemic roadblocks military spouses deal with when seeking support or counseling (11:22) The weight military life adds to an already struggling marriage (34:29) How some military marriages can thrive when there is solid communication and support (45:07) Learn more about Heather Sweeney: Heather Sweeney is the author of the memoir Camouflage: How I Emerged from the Shadows of a Military Marriage, which is about her journey from being overshadowed by her husband's military career to rediscovering herself as a single mother approaching middle age. She writes essays about divorce, life as a military spouse, parenting, and women's health, and her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, HuffPost, TODAY.com, Newsweek, Business Insider, Good Housekeeping, Healthline, and Military.com, among many others. She lives in Virginia with her boyfriend, two college-aged kids, and their geriatric Labrador retriever. How important is marriage to God? How about money?
We finish our trip through the topic of Marriage and Divorce in scripture. We do a bit of review and then move through Paul's instructions in 1 Corinthians 7. We discuss God's practical solution for the problem of lust and the natural desires of the flesh.God wants to provide both security and affection in a bond meant to last a lifetime. Paul also has to deal with the influx of grafted in Gentiles who may have entered the faith with an unbelieving spouse. What can we learn from this unique situation? In Israel and in the Law, no such provision is discussed. In hie mercy and grace, the Lord understands we are fallen creatures and he provides various instructions to help us walk as closely to his will as possible. We will revisit the woman at the well in John 4 and the woman taken in an act of adultery in John 8 and observe how the Lord deals with these woman and how that differs from both how the Law and Paul approach the issue.

We continues our path through the sometimes complex issue of Marriage and Divorce in a Christian context. W start, as we always should, with the original design, them progress through God's dealings with a mixed church in the Acts as they anticipated terrible days ahead. We compare a few of Paul's instructions during the Acts age against his Post Acts instructions. We get a little into the marriages themselves and Paul's warnings about giving Satan a foothold in our homes.Paul addresses, in a very practical way, God's remedy for the sinful tendencies of the flesh. Marriage is offered as a remedy for lust, and the coming together as one as a remedy for rampant fornication, adultery, and other perversions of the original design.
This is an enormous topic that is very simple in some ways and very complex in other ways. It started off simply in the Garden: one man, one woman, one flesh, without end. Sin and death was introduced into the world by our father, Adam, and God had to start dealing with men and women and our frailties. We will look at marriage under the Law and how God had to make exceptions to his design for a fallen world and a fallen people. As he made his covenant with Israel and gave her the Law for the land, our Lord included concessions to the weakness of mankind. The Lord Jesus had to deal with this issue in his ministry to both Israel and to Gentiles.
Because marriage was designed by Christ to reflect His covenant love, we are called to walk in the Spirit daily—praying together, extending grace and mercy, and pursuing one another with intentional love. Whether married, single, or divorced, we can rest in the truth that Jesus will never forsake His bride, and we are to mirror that faithfulness in our relationships. As we grasp His unshakable love for us, it transforms the way we love, forgive, and serve each other.

“Are Annulments Too Legalistic?” This episode delves into the complexities of marriage and divorce within the Catholic Church, addressing concerns about the perceived bureaucratic nature of annulments. Tune in as we explore questions about the validity of annulments granted under specific circumstances, the implications for non-Catholics, and the Church’s teachings on relationships during the annulment process. Join The CA Live Club Newsletter: Click Here Invite our apologists to speak at your parish! Visit Catholicanswersspeakers.com Questions Covered: 03:25 – Aren't annulments legalistic, bureaucratic, and all about control? 07:08 – Why was an annulment granted if it doesn’t seem like it should be granted? 13:36 – My boyfriend is Protestant, married in the protestant church and is divorced. Why does he have to get an annulment if he’s not Catholic? He’s not interested in joining the Catholic church at this point. He’s doing this for me because I want to be married in the Catholic Church. 16:24 – Why don’t they call in the priest who gave the couple the pre marriage instruction to a couple seeking an annulment? 18:46 – I got an annulment 20 years ago. Is there a way for me to see what my ex husband submitted on his side of the annulment report? 22:33 – What does the Church teach on pursuing romantic relationships while waiting for an annulment? Is there anything that is offered to help prevent future annulments? 31:05 – You keep talking about the Marriage bond. Does that also include the covenant? 34:14 – If my nephew decided to return to the Church one day, could he have an annulment and remarry one day? 41:48 – Once the annulment is granted the marriage is not valid. Does that mean the kids and their sacraments are also invalid? 44:49 – Can an annulment decision be appealed? 47:55 – Is there any hope to get an annulment if the witnesses are no longer able to be located? 50:51 – My marriage was annulled 50 years ago and all I got was a letter in the mail and I never participated with it. It felt like a slap in the face to be told that my 9.5 year marriage never existed. I left the Catholic Church after that. Should there be a limit to when you can seek an annulment?
The traditional image of a family is due for a makeover. Marriage rates are rising slightly, divorce rates are declining, and nearly one-third of young adults are predicted to never marry. Lois Collins, writer for the Deseret News, discusses the new findings.

Chapter 24 affirms that marriage is a divinely instituted covenant between one man and one woman. It is lawful for all types of people to marry (except those prohibited in Scripture), and Christians should marry only in the Lord. Because marriage is honorable, it must be entered into and governed according to God's Word.
Well, brethren, today we press into Mark 10:1–12 and tackle a subject nobody loves—divorce. When the Pharisees come testing Jesus, He cuts through their "well-baited" questions and exposes the root sin: hardness of heart. Marriage, He reminds us, is a lifelong covenant—what God has joined, let no one separate. Yet in our fallen world He grants a concession to protect the innocent. We'll wrestle with Deuteronomy's certificate, Malachi's "I hate divorce," and the gospel-powered call to fight for every covenant, extend grace, and lean on Christ's strength.

Pastor Dorrell examines the challenging and sensitive topic of marriage, divorce, and remarriage by navigating through key passages in the New and Old Testaments. He explains God's original intent for marriage as a sacred, lifelong covenant, while also addressing the difficult exceptions of infidelity and abandonment that arise from the "hardness of heart." Ultimately, this message calls believers to honor the sanctity of their current marriage, offers hope and redemption for those who have experienced the tragedy of divorce, and encourages all to reflect Christ's restorative love within their most intimate relationship.Eastland is a Place to BelongEastland Baptist Church is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
