Blending influences from around the globe, Pittsburgh's own Rusted Root made their mark on music history with their unforgettable 1992 hit, “Send Me On My Way”. This joyous tune only hit #72 on the Billboard Hot 100, but the song's prominence in movies, TV, and commercials has eclipsed its initial chart performance. This week, we'll dive further into the story and back catalog of Rusted Root to decide if we'd like to hold their little hand or tell them to run. Everything from the music to the characters, this movie is a nostalgic juggernaut. It is hard to not look back at this movie and not completely love it. We discussed so many things: - On a scale 1-10, how guilty does this movie make you feel for not reading more books? - What would the movie be like if Mary-Kate and Ashley Olson played Matilda?- Matilda vs Eleven- which telekinetic is stronger? - Send Me On My Way- how do you rank other one hit wonder songs from the 90s/2000s?and so much more!!! Trigger warning: this episode contains conversations about depression and suicide. If you've not heard about Kath Koschel and the work she's doing, you will. She's making the world a better place, one act of kindness at a time. In this episode we dig into her personal story and it's one of the most incredible stories of adversity, resilience and courage I've heard. Kath has transformed her life threatening challenges into a global kindness movement. She is one of the toughest, most courageous, brave, hardworking, humble and genuine people you'll meet. Kath has founded the Kindness Factory – an organisation and global movement that promotes kindness around the world. She's developed a curriculum that teaches kindness in schools, she's broken world records, she's an elite athlete in multiple sports, a Pride of Australia Medal recipient amongst so many other achievements. Oh, and she's training to swim the English Channel. When you hear about what she's gone through to get here, you'll appreciate why she's such an inspiration.Kath's drink pairing for this episode: Peach KombuchaKaths' soundtrack for this episode: 'Send Me On My Way' – Rusted RootFor more info, check out www.kindnessfactory.com and @kindnessfactory on Instagram. #onesmallact

Rusted Root frontman Michael Glabiki phones Kyle Meredith to take us back to 1994 for the 25th anniversary of the band's breakthrough LP, When I Woke. He shares the stories behind songs "Send Me On My Way", "Martyr", and "Ecstasy". He also tells us about being in an organic-sounding band at the height of grunge, their political activism, and how it translates to events happening today. From there, he shares a number of tour stories, from his experiences opening for Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, Plant & Page, to jogging through gang territory, and to once playing a HORDE festival show to an audience of three: Sheryl Crow, her manager, and her dog. We also get an update on his new band, Uprooted, and their plans to release music this year. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
It’s the perfect soundtrack to those lighthearted movies you watched as a kid. It’s kind of world music. It’s mostly incoherent made up lyrics. Katie saw Rusted Root live, they were fine. Brad owned two of their albums, they were also fine. There's no doubt that this song inspires sheer joy and has, thankfully, stood the test of time, despite not really charting that high at the time of its initial release. But '95 was a tough year. Tell you what; if you get fired from your job then go out strong just like Rick did. Peter Gabriel's "So," Paul Simon's "Graceland," Talking Head's "This Must Be the Place." All distilled by some white hippies out of Pittsburgh. Ombaseeyou, ombatellyou New Game: Glabicking, or Glibnicking. Give it a try, have some fun. This guy has a VERY expressive mouth. Happy Birthday to you, Joe Shipley.
Redemption episode - Melissa Paradis. Still fell asleep. The original Homeward Bound. Super shaky cinematography. Phil has name pronunciation problems yet again. Multi-note problems. Our cousin’s dog pulled a miniature incredible journey. Melissa repeats exactly what Amanda talked about earlier. Our Dungeons and Dragons adventure. Sad face notes. Sketchy train track without any drama. Baby bear cat fight. Fantastic Mr Fox - great book, terrible movie. Old Jeremy the Hermit is the best. Mad Hatter situation. Melissa cares more about dogs than humans. Weird little girl like the Blake’s girl. I’m glad that cat came because we couldn’t stand our daughter. Game - would you rather journey questions. Spike face. Operator gossip chain. This movie was missing a journey montage - preferably Send Me On My Way. Dramatic long run ending. New pet Roombas - Roger and Poomba. Roombas make an incredible journey every time. One Tree Hill and Everwood marathons. Next episode - Sword in the Stone.
