In a media briefing last Sunday Mkhwanazi made the allegations against police minister Senzo Mchunu, his close associate Brown Mogotsi and Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya. He accused the officials of ties to crime syndicates , alleged interference in police operations, including the disbanding of a task team investigating political killings. In response , the presidency released a statement on Friday saying President Cyril Ramaphosa has been seized with this matter and following various consultations, he will take the nation into his confidence. Security experts say these accusations should be thoroughly investigated as they could erode public confidence in South Africa's police. The Democratic Alliance says lying to parliament is a serious criminal offense and anyone found wanting should face the full might of the law. This as party deputy chief whip, Baxolile Nodada held a media briefing a short while ago outside the Cape Town police station ahead of laying criminal charges against Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu. Mchunu is alleged to have lied to parliament about knowing Brown Mogotsi. Mogotsi has been implicated in alleged political interference in police operations by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Mkhwanazi has also accused Mchunu and other senior officials of colluding with a criminal syndicate linked to drug cartels and politically connected figures. National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola has confirmed that he has not signed off on the closure of the high profile political killings task team investigating political killings in the country. This follows a media briefing on Sunday by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi who alleged that Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu had ordered the closure of the task team. AfriForum het 'n dringende vergadering aangevra met die polisieminister, Senzo Mchunu, om die oplewing in plaasaanvalle hok te slaan. Daar is sedert Desember verlede jaar 33 aanvalle en sewe moorde aangemeld, met van die slagoffers wat gemartel is. Jacques Broodryk van AfriForum sê daar bestaan 'n behoefte aan daadwerklike optrede om landelike gemeenskappe te beskerm en die landbousektor te beveilig. Hy stel verbeterde samewerking met die polisie voor om veiligheidsmaatreëls te versterk.

RISE Mzansi vra meer optrede om gemeenskappe te beveilig, nadat die minister van Polisie, Senzo Mchunu, onthul het dat 20-persent van die verdagtes wat as deel van Operasie Shanela in hegtenis geneem is, vorige oortredings het.
