Today, we're talking about Russell Vought's confirmation as director of the Office of Management and Budget in Trump's second term after Democrats in the Senate did everything in their power to prevent his confirmation from going through. After all, according to Chuck Schumer, Vought is "Project 2025 incarnate," when really, he's just doing his job as Trump directed him. Of course, that didn't stop Wheaton College, his alma mater, from retracting its congratulatory statement after the social media backlash. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. Magid reviews the leadup to President Donald Trump's inauguration into office as the 47th president of the United States, including the President-elect's role in the Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal that began with the release of three female hostages on Sunday. Magid points out that reaching the second phase of the deal may be more difficult, given the pressures on Netanyahu's coalition government, and the prime minister's desire to remain fighting Hamas in Gaza. Magid also looks at Trump and Netanyahu's various supporters, and who has sway over the two leaders in their decision-making process. Magid discusses Trump's comments during the inauguration rally, as he invited hostage families and former hostage Noa Argamani on stage, but made a point about releasing the January 6, 2021 "hostages," not referring to the hostages taken by Hamas to Gaza. After the inauguration and rally, says Magid, Trump signed a number of orders, including undoing the Biden sanctions against violent Israeli settlers, revoking the Biden order that removed Trump's 2020 sanctions on the International Criminal Court and ordering a 90-day pause in foreign development assistance. Finally, Magid discusses Trump's casual comment regarding the Gaza ceasefire and that it may not hold, remarking that the war in Gaza is "their war, not our war," perhaps as a way for Trump to distance himself from the region and situation. For news updates, please check out The Times of Israel’s ongoing live blog. Discussed articles include: Trump looks to ride on success of hostage deal as he readies to take oath of office On day one, Trump rolls back Biden sanctions regime targeting violent Israeli settlers Trump orders 90-day pause in foreign development assistance, likely impacting Palestinians Trump revokes Biden order that removed his 2020 sanctions on the ICC Trump believes Israeli-Saudi normalization can be reached ‘soon’ Trump says not confident Gaza deal will hold through all three phases ‘I thought I’d die in Gaza’: First testimonies from freed hostages released Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. This week marks one month since Islamist rebels overthrew the brutal Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad and took control of the country, forcing the former president to flee for his life to Russia on Dec. 8. Jews around the world, including in Canada, might breathe a sigh of relief at some of the new regime's stated attitudes toward Jews and Israel. Their leader has made promising comments about not wanting to continue its war with Israel, and the ruling party has also pledged to allow people of all religions to worship freely in the war-torn country, Jews included. There's just one problem: there are barely any left. That's according to retired human rights advocate Judy Feld Carr. The Canadian activist has spent decades masterminding the secret exodus of Syria's remaining Jewish population; by 2001, she had successfully smuggled out more than 3,300 Syrian Jews, including many who had been imprisoned, tortured and falsely accused of being Israeli spies. Unsurprisingly, Feld Carr has been monitoring the recent developments in Damascus, including reports about the condition of the local Jewish community's historic buildings and the whearabouts of millions of dollars worth of looted Jewish artifacts. She joins The CJN Daily to shed light on what what life was like for Syrian Jews under the Assad regime, and why there are still some parts of her clandestine mission that can never be made public. An Ennis-based financial consultant has hailed the decision to further decrease the rate of inflation to end the year, claiming energy prices have now levelled out. Inflation has been further curtailed in 2024, now sitting at 2.9%, largely in part to the stabilising of costs of oil and gas nationwide. Tommy Corbett from Carey Corbett Financial Solutions claims that 2025 is likely to see that number dip below 2% and continue to decrease in the following years. He says inflation is largely under control, but that it is dependent on the Eurozone and the actions of European Central Bank.

It's hoped a new funding boost will combat legacy challenges for Clare people in need of housing adaptions. The Government has confirmed a €10,000 increase for disabled in need of the grant, who can now receive up to €40,000 to install ramps, grab rails, bathroom facilities, stair lifts, extensions, and hoists. A major criticism of the grant has been that VAT costs are not included. Clare Leader Forum Spokesperson Dermot Hayes says the increased limits should help.

Send us a textMike Goldstein or “Stickers”. Hails from Milford NH. Love the fire service and forever a student of the craft of firemanship. I was born in Albuquerque NM, lived in Arizona for a while and then California, then finally settled on the Granite State. I pretty much grew up in Nashua, NH. I was a shit for most of my life…worked as a bouncer in a dive bar and even ran with a MC for a little bit. I always had a calling to help others though, and started my career in the first responder field in 2005 as a dispatcher for a private ambulance company. I met my future wife a few years later, and her father inspired me to become a firefighter. I got my start as a “call firefighter” in 2012 and it was all over after that…I was hooked. Ever since I started the fire service, I wanted to know everything about it. In 2018 I was hired as a career firefighter and continued to find my passion for the service. I am a staff/state instructor for the NH Fire Academy, and a bunch of other certs. I'm married to a beautiful woman and have twin girls who are 14. I'm pushing 46 and have currently been with the Derry Fire Department for almost a year. I'm very passionate about RIT, hose ops. I volunteer to help run the NH Explorer Academy every year which is incredibly rewarding. I'm also very passionate about mental health and leading a positive life style inside and outside the fire service

When you say the name Whoopi Goldberg it's hard not to smile. The name is filled with heart, laughter, and a joyous sense of fun, just like the woman herself. Born Caryn Johnson, her memoir Bits and Pieces is a love letter to her mother and brother, the two people who molded her into the hilarious, honest and morally centered person she is today. She has also written a graphic novel about menopause (sure, why not?) called The Change, which is a declaration that women of a certain age (and color) can don a cape and fight bad guys with hot flashes, if they so choose.
