Dive into the wild, wonky whirlwind of Adams County's weekend warfare – a series of savage altercations on Deerfield Road that exploded from a bike ride gone wrong to a gunshot showdown! It all kicks off Friday night, July 11, 2025, in the Kingston area near Natchez, where 33-year-old Black resident Reginald Butler is pedaling his bicycle and crosses paths with a rowdy crew of young party-goers (mostly white dudes in bathing suits – sandbar shenanigans?). What starts as a simple cig request (or so they say) spirals into pure mayhem: Butler's knocked off his bike, pummeled by four assailants, suffering a fractured nose and possible concussion. He bolts on his bike, heads home, grabs a handgun for "protection," and pedals back – big mistake or bold move?   Enter round two: Butler runs into the group at another bridge spot. They allegedly drag him into the woods, resuming the beatdown. Amid the frenzy, Butler pulls his piece and blasts Hayden Pounds in the chest – one round also ripping through a nearby vehicle! Pounds gets airlifted to a hospital but bounces back and is released. The whole mess is caught on multiple phone cams, igniting community fury across racial lines – hundreds raging on social media, calling it a "heinous" attack no one should endure.   Arrests drop like dominoes: Butler's hauled in for aggravated assault, bonds out on $50K. Then Cameron Taunton (21, Vidalia, LA – already on probation for assaulting a disabled person) gets nabbed, charges upgraded from simple assault to aggravated assault and conspiracy ($350K bond). Houston Pretty (18, Vidalia) faces the same: aggravated assault and conspiracy ($350K). A 16-year-old juvenile joins the lineup with identical charges – name withheld. Sheriff Travis Patten warns more collars coming, with MBI and FBI probing for hate crime vibes (racial slurs? Lynching echoes?).   Clay unpacks the insanity: "Hard to buy a cig ask sparks this – motive missing? Butler escapes, arms up, returns – kills self-defense claim. If roles reversed under Biden DOJ, hate crime charges fly!" Questions swirl: Why the bridge? Who started round two? Innocent cig stop or deeper beef? Brace for national spotlight – Ben Crump incoming? This ain't just a fight; it's Mississippi's powder keg of race, rights, and reckless returns. Boom – truth bombs dropping!

The government of Armenia has gone to war against one of the country's most powerful institutions – the Apostolic Church. National security police have gaoled a popular archbishop, Bagrat Galstanyan, claiming he was involved in a plot to overthrow the government. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has also demanded the resignation of the top cleric, accusing him of having a secret child. It's a high-risk move for an unpopular government, taking on the ancient church that many Armenians see as the embodiment of the nation.  OLESYA VARTANYAN is an independent analyst and consultant based in neighbouring Georgia.Australia's Law Reform Commission is reviewing a patchwork of different state laws governing surrogacy. Earlier this year, the ABC reported that by 2032, the global surrogacy industry was set to reach $129 billion. But if it's financial boom for the baby business, what are the ethics of a practice that includes severing the connection between mother and child? Dr ERICA CERVINI has been reviewing the case in an essay for Eureka Street magazine. In what amounts to a small revolution in the Church of Latter-Day Saints, Mormon women are now permitted to reveal their shoulders, having been taught that bare upper arms were too raunchy. These changes come with the growing power of Mormon influencers on social media -- known loosely as “#momtok” – and a popular TV show, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. International report
Crackdown on Turkish opposition intensifies, with further arrests of mayors

International report

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 12, 2025 6:28

Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) is warning that the future of democracy in the country is at stake, as a legal crackdown against it intensifies. This month has seen three more city mayors arrested in anti-corruption probes, while half of CHP parliamentary deputies are facing having their legal immunity lifted. Thousands marched through the streets of the Mediterranean city of Adana in protest at the arrest of its mayor on alleged corruption charges. The mayors of Antalya and Adiyaman have also been detained on similar charges. More than a dozen mayors of Turkey's main opposition CHP have now been jailed. The legal crackdown began in March with the jailing of Istanbul's mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, and on Wednesday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed there would be no letting up. "We launched an investigation into the largest theft ring in the history of the Republic, the most reckless organised crime organisation ever," Erdogan told his parliamentary deputies. "Those who took bribes, those who practically held cities under extortion, those who put people in a difficult situation and then robbed them were all CHP people," he continued. A battle for survival  Erdogan further ratcheted up the pressure on the CHP with a presidential motion calling for the lifting of parliamentary immunity from 61 out of CHP's 121 deputies. CHP leader Ozgur Ozel is also under investigation for allegedly inciting public hatred and insulting the president. Ozel is at the forefront of leading anti-government protests across the country, which continue to attract large crowds as the party builds a significant lead in opinion polls over Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP). The CHP claims their growing success is what is motivating the recent prosecutions, rather than corruption. "These are politically driven arrests and investigations," declared party spokesman Ilhan Uzgel. "Not a single government party mayor is even investigated." Uzgel admits that with more than 500 of its officials having been arrested, the party is facing a battle for survival. "The government has all the instruments of the state. They control the judiciary, they control the police force etc etc. So it's very difficult to stop it." Despite mounting pressure, however, Uzgel insists they will not back down. "We are organising rallies twice a week, our leader is very energetic. He [Ozel]... said we are not going to back down. The government, they don't want the opposition party to challenge Erdogan's authority. This is the core of the issue right now." Turkey walks a fine line as conflict between Israel and Iran cools Broadcasting bans However, the political noose around the neck of the CHP continues to tighten. This week, the opposition Sozcu TV station was banned for 10 days by regulatory authorities for "inciting public hatred" after broadcasting protests against the jailing of the Istanbul mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu. Another opposition TV station, Halk, is facing a similar ban. The two are among the few media outlets that continue to report on the ongoing CHP protests against the waves of arrests. The broadcast bans are being seen as a sign that the days of critical media could be numbered. "I believe by the end of this year we might be hearing of the start of the liquidation of critical TV channels," claims Erol Onderoglu, Istanbul representative of the Paris-based NGO Reporters Without Borders. Fears are growing too that the threat against independent media is part of a much more worrying process of the dismantling of the pillars of democracy. Turkey steps into EU defence plans as bloc eyes independence from US Opinion polls However, the government appears to be losing the battle for people's minds, with several opinion polls reporting that more than 60 percent of people polled believe the legal crackdown on CHP is politically motivated. Anger against the government also continues to grow over 40 percent inflation. Sezin Oney, an analyst for the independent Poltiyol news outlet, fears a political showdown is looming. "Turkish democracy is on its deathbed, actually. Erdogan envisions a political stage where we don't have a really challenging opposition. [Arrests] will escalate and escalate. They will go as far as they can until they reach their target." While Erdogan remains in a strong position, the opposition is still a threat to the president. "He does have most of the cards," said Oney, "but he doesn't have the support of the public in general. So, at the end of the day, at one point it will be the people versus Erdogan." "What matters is where the security forces stand," he added, "When it comes to a point when the people take to the streets en masse, will the security bureaucracy go against their own people?" Neither the CHP nor Erdogan are showing any signs of capitulating, with protests expected to continue and likely to intensify in September, coinciding with the reopening of universities and the return of people from summer holidays. Court cases against the CHP are also scheduled to resume then. With both sides insisting they are fighting for the future of their country, it could well be a fight that leaves only one side standing.

Iowa Lottery Fraud Which Led to Arrests and a Book. The story sounds like something out of a true crime documentary or Hollywood Crime Drama: cyber crime, deception, a mysterious offshore trust, and even Bigfoot hunting. But this wasn't fiction, it was real life in Iowa. And it led to one of the most shocking lottery fraud cases in U.S. history, resulting in arrests, a best-selling book, international news headlines, and millions in stolen winnings. The episode is also promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. At the center of the storm was Terry Rich, the former President and CEO of the Iowa Lottery. Under his leadership, the organization uncovered a plot so bizarre and calculated that it threatened to undermine the entire $80 billion lottery industry. This episode of The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast now streaming for free on their website, in addition to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major social podcast platforms. “It was like nothing we had ever seen before,” said Rich in a recent interview. “We were dealing with someone on the inside who had found a way to game a system designed to be foolproof.” The scandal began to unravel in 2010 when a $14.3 million Hot Lotto jackpot went unclaimed for nearly a year. Eventually, a mysterious attempt to claim the prize emerged, through an anonymous trust in Belize. Suspicious of the secrecy, Rich and the Iowa Lottery refused to pay out. Iowa Lottery Fraud Which Led to Arrests and a Book. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . “We had one simple rule: if we don't know who's behind the claim, we don't pay,” Rich explained. That decision kicked off a decade-long investigation, filled with twists and turns that investigators and journalists alike have described as “unbelievable.” Surveillance footage from a convenience store eventually led to the arrest of the primary suspect, the former information security director at the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms He used his privileged access to install a rootkit, a hidden piece of software, on the computer that generated winning numbers for the Hot Lotto game. This allowed him to predict and rig lottery outcomes in multiple states including Iowa, Colorado, Wisconsin, Kansas, and Oklahoma. In 2015, the primary suspect was convicted on two counts of fraud for attempting to claim the Hot Lotto prize. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and later received a 25-year sentence for broader conspiracy charges. However, he was released on parole in 2022 after serving just five years. Iowa Lottery Fraud Which Led to Arrests and a Book. The scandal, now dubbed “The Hot Lotto Fraud”, eventually exposed a network of co-conspirators including his brother, a former Texas Justice of the Peace, and a Texas businessman. All were involved in a scheme that dated back as far as 2005 and exploited specific calendar dates to produce predictable winning numbers. “They figured out how to rig a random number generator,” said veteran journalist Perry Beeman, who co-authored the book The $80 Billion Gamble with Rich. “It was the perfect crime, until it wasn't.” You can listen to his stories and interview on our website for free in addition to platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and other major podcast platforms. Their book, which is now available wherever books are sold, takes readers deep inside the case using court documents, phone calls, emails, and public records. It's part true crime, part white-collar investigation, and fully jaw-dropping. “We wrote the book not just to tell the story,” said Beeman, “but to show how transparency and relentless pursuit of the truth led to justice.” The full podcast episode is streaming now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. The story gained national attention, appearing in media outlets like CNN, CBS, 20/20, and The New York Times. Terry Rich also shared insights on various social media platforms, speaking candidly about the challenges his team faced. Iowa Lottery Fraud Which Led to Arrests and a Book. “When you realize someone on the inside is stealing from the public, it shakes your foundation,” Rich said in one Instagram video. “But we were committed to getting it right.” Following the scandal, Hot Lotto was discontinued in 2017, replaced by Lotto America. A subsequent lawsuit even saw a legitimate winner suing for damages after the jackpot he won had been reset due to the thieves' earlier rigged win. That case settled out of court in 2019. While the thieves crime stunned the country, Rich's role in uncovering it cemented his legacy. During his 25-year career, he not only led the Iowa Lottery to increase sales and profits by 50%, but also turned the Blank Park Zoo around financially and launched four successful businesses. His diverse career includes appearances on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, executive roles in TV production, and creating other tv content. Be sure to follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radi Show on their website also promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other platforms. “I've always believed in integrity, whether it's in business, media, or government,” Rich said. “That belief is what guided us through this entire ordeal.” Today, Rich continues to share the story through keynote speeches, podcasts, and online content, hoping to inspire a new generation of leaders to put honesty and public trust above all. The Iowa Lottery, which has raised more than $2 billion for state programs since its launch in 1985, continues to be a key player in national lotteries like Powerball, Mega Millions, and others. In fact, the largest prize ever won in Iowa came in October 2018, when one ticket claimed $343.9 million. Iowa Lottery Fraud Which Led to Arrests and a Book. We had to protect that, at any cost.” For those fascinated by cyber crime, insider deception, and the power of persistence, The $80 Billion Gamble offers a gripping and insightful read. And for anyone curious about how modern fraud can be exposed, even when hidden in plain sight, it's a story worth sharing across every platform: from Facebook to YouTube, from Apple to Spotify, and across the news media landscape. Heather du Plessis-Allan: Kids shouldn't be exempt from citizen's arrests

If you listen to parenting experts, you'll hear the same thing time and time again about raising kids properly. They need love, but just as importantly, they need boundaries. They need to be told no, they need to be disciplined, and they need to learn what they can and can't do. And if you don't do that, you basically ruin their chances at success. Now, bear that in mind when you hear people like the Children's Commissioner arguing that kids should be off limit on citizen's arrests. At the moment the Government is proposing a law change to allow retailers, or security guards, or you and I, to hold a shoplifter until the cops can get there and take over. The Children's Commissioner is well-meaning because she just doesn't want kids hurt. These things can go badly, especially if you've got the worst case playing out like we've seen, which when you've got weapons involved with kids turning up with hammers and knives and so on to raid a store. But while she means well, she is wrong. Because a loophole like that will be exploited by adults. Gangs already use kids to commit their ram raids and their thefts because they know that kids get off more lightly than they would. If you make a rule that kids are allowed to escape but adults get held down, you only make it more likely that they send the kids in, thereby making it more likely that kids end up ruining their life. Which brings us back to the very start - kids need boundaries. Not just from parents. But also from the state. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr Claire Achmad: Chief Children's Commissioner on the concerns broadening citizen's arrest powers could harm young people

There's fears broadening citizen's arrest powers could endanger young people. The Government has proposed allowing the arrests at all times of day - and wants to clarify when reasonable force can be applied. Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith said it could allow children to be restrained until police arrive. Chief Children's Commissioner Dr Claire Achmad says citizen's arrests won't prevent stealing and could lead to violence. "A number of agencies that have given advice to the Government on this - police, justice, Oranga Tamariki, Crown Law, among others - they've highlighted this risk." Prize-winning Iranian American author Dina Nayeri joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss the complicated reality of survival on the ground during Israel's recent bombing of Iran. Nayeri talks about the destruction leveled on Ardestoon, where her father's family lives; her memories of running for bomb shelters during the Iran-Iraq war; and the current situation for her family in Iran. Nayeri explains how desperately Iranians on the ground want the Islamic State overthrown and the complexities involved in who would take charge should the regime topple.  Nayeri considers the gap between the mainstream media narrative of Iran as a devout Muslim nation and recent surveys indicating rising secularism in the country. She reflects on forty-plus years of the Islamic State in power—a small slice of Iran's history, but a phase that has irreparably disrupted both the lives of those who left and those who stayed behind.   To hear the full episode, subscribe through iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app (include the forward slashes when searching). New Intel Confirms Iran's Nuclear Program Crippled U.S. and Israeli intelligence confirm with high confidence that Iran's three major nuclear facilities were destroyed in Trump's recent strike. The enriched uranium is believed to be entombed, though not entirely accounted for, with concerns mounting about a possible hidden site under “Pick-axe Mountain.” Trump says he may not need a peace deal at all, though inspections could still be critical. Iranian Sleeper Cells Arrested in the U.S. Federal authorities arrest 11 Iranian nationals across the country, including an ex-sniper in Alabama and a Hezbollah-linked man in Minnesota. The arrests come amid heightened fears of retaliation and infiltration following the Iran strike. Media and Deep State Under Fire Bryan criticizes CNN and The New York Times for spreading a low-confidence intel leak that contradicted broader assessments of the strike's success. He also exposes former FBI Director Christopher Wray for allegedly burying 2020 election interference evidence involving a Chinese operation to help Joe Biden. Wray is now under investigation.
