The Competition Commission is girding itself for a fight with Big Tech companies like Google and Meta Platforms after publishing its provisional findings in its investigation into the impact that Big Tech has had on the South African news media sector. To unpack the provisional report, which was published on Monday, Competition Commission senior analyst and technical lead Donnavan-John Linley joined the TechCentral Show to discuss the findings. He chats about how the commission is attempting to assist local publishers deal with the rise of competing social media platforms owned by US tech giants and why the regulator is determined to intervene in the market to support the funding of journalism in South Africa in the digital age. Linley tells TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod about: • Why the Competition Commission decided to initiate its probe into digital platforms and the impact these platforms are having on South Africa's news media; • The findings contained in the provisional report and why the commission reached the conclusions it did – including its recommendation that Google pay as much as R500-million/year in “compensation” over a three- to five-year period in an effort to level the playing field; • The likely reaction from Big Tech to the commission's proposals, and what might happen if they don't agree to play ball; • The risk of provoking a backlash from the Donald Trump administration – already Trump has accused the EU of using antitrust fines levied on US tech companies as a form of taxation and threatened retaliation in response; • How the proposed compensation of the local news media might work, and who would be eligible to receive the funding from Google; • The impact of artificial intelligence on the South African media industry and how the commission has dealt with this in its provisional report; and • Whether the commission's findings amount to regulatory overreach – are the proposals it has made really warranted, or is the media industry simply experiencing capitalism's “creative destruction” that will ultimately drive innovation in news media? Don't miss a great interview! TechCentral

"The consultations are still under way," he said. Sibeko said SARS and the retail industry, including parcel delivery companies, are still discussing an implementation date. The agency doesn't want to "arbitrarily" set a date, causing a rush to comply. Running out of petrol on a Durban highway can turn a scenic drive into a hot and sunny wait. Beyond the inconvenience, are there legal repercussions for this unfortunate situation? In South Africa, there's no national law specifically targeting empty fuel tanks. However, stopping on a highway is generally a no-go and Durban is no exception. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport enforces this regulation and the eThekwini Municipality can issue fines of between R500 and R1,000 for stopping on the highway due to an empty fuel tank. On top of the fine, towing and recovery can add a hefty cost to your unexpected pitstop. While specific details on fines might be difficult to find online, contacting the eThekwini Traffic Department directly can provide the latest information. Avoid becoming a statistic on the highway. Here are some tips to keep your Durban travels smooth: Develop a habit of checking your fuel gauge regularly, especially before hitting the freeway. Most modern cars have a low-fuel warning light. Learn its location and what it means. Utilise trip computers that display your remaining fuel range. Plan your route and familiarise yourself with gas station locations, especially if you're venturing outside the city centre. By staying fuelled up and informed, you can keep your Durban adventures frustration-free and keep the traffic flowing!

Roger Jardine's R500 billion fund from taxes: Short-term trade-off for long-term sustainability

Change Starts Now is a political party that was launched in December 2023 by Roger Jardine, a former director general and banker. It aims to be an alternative political option for South Africans who want change in the country. The party's manifesto, called the Change Charter, was unveiled in Soweto this week. It includes a ‘Marshall' plan of R500 billion to redevelop South Africa. In an interview with Biznews, Jardine explained that wartime vocabulary was chosen because South Africa's current state resembles a war zone.To fund the plan, Jardine is proposing a temporary three-year reconstruction tax. This would include a wealth tax of 1.5%, a corporate tax increase from 28% to 32%, an individual tax increase of 4.5% for those earning more than R1.8 million a year, and a 1% annual charge on retirement funds. Addressing concerns about increased taxes, Jardine emphasised the urgent need for drastic intervention. He warned that if the country continues to decline, the chances of increasing and sustainable tax increases are on the horizon as ‘the gap between our ability to fund constitutionally guaranteed social protections and our balance sheet continues to widen.' Jardine described the temporary tax increases as a short-term trade-off for long-term sustainability. In response to concerns about politicians misusing the proposed fund, he assured that it would be structured as a ring-fenced fund with oversight by an independent panel. Jardine stated that Change Starts Now supports a strong role for the private sector in state-owned enterprises and believes that black empowerment policies have failed. He criticised the misapplication of procurement policies. Jardine denied representing an agreed position of the business sector in the country or that his party has received a billion rand in funding. He said that finding solutions in South Africa is not rocket science; it can be achieved with political will and effective management.

When Mr D and Pick n Pay came together to introduce a novel grocery delivery service, I never imagined that a simple R500 voucher could turn into a heartwarming story of generosity and support for South Africa. This is my story about how a small gesture grew into something much more profound, all thanks to a partnership between Mr D and Pick n Pay and the incredible work of my friend, Samantha Perry. It all began when I received a R500 voucher to "test" the newly launched grocery delivery service. While most people might have seen this as a chance to try out a convenient service, I felt that there was a greater purpose waiting to be uncovered. I wanted this opportunity to be more than just a test; I wanted it to be a lifeline for someone who was tirelessly helping South African families survive through tough times. That someone was my dear friend, Samantha Perry. Samantha had been on a mission to support struggling families since 2020, and her dedication had not wavered over the last three years. Every month, she puts out a call for vouchers to assist those in need, and I knew that she was the perfect candidate to make the most of this opportunity. So, I decided to reach out to Mr D and Pick n Pay with an audacious proposal. What if I could gift this R500 voucher to Samantha, and in return, she could share her experience with the service? What if this gesture could not only aid her in her mission but also inspire others to lend a helping hand? To my surprise and delight, they agreed without hesitation. But the story doesn't end there. Mr D and Pick n Pay were so moved by Samantha's work and the potential impact of this act of kindness that they decided to take it one step further. They offered an additional R5,000 to be presented to Samantha during a podcast interview where she could share her remarkable journey and the significant role the R500 voucher had played in supporting her mission.

A Pauper Attitude

Thought For Today

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Sunday morning, the 30th of July 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start off in Malachi 3:10:"Bring all the tithes into the storehouse,That there may be food in My house,And try Me now in this,"Says the Lord of hosts,"If I will not open for you the windows of heavenAnd pour out for you such blessingThat there will not be room enough to receive it."Then we go straight to Matthew 7:7:"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." That is a beautiful scripture; the one in Malachi is also very special to me. The Lord says: "Test me." He doesn't say "Tempt Me" - "Test Me and see if I will not honour you." I want to tell you today that many of us have a pauper attitude when our Father owns all the cattle on a thousand hills, He owns all the hills, He owns the silver and the gold, and yet we are walking around with a begging bowl asking for scraps. As one man of God said, "Why ask for only a cupful when God owns the entire ocean?" A ray of light - why do we ask for a ray of light when Jesus holds the sun in His hands? I remember like it was yesterday when the Lord impressed upon me to hire a tent for a men's conference on the farm. We hired the biggest tent in the world, that's right! It could seat 30 thousand men inside, and we had 30 thousand men outside. I want to tell you a secret; when I thought about hiring that tent, we had precisely R500 in the ministry account - R500! That is about $50, not even, and that tent cost millions. It took 17 30-ton rigs to bring it to the farm. It took three weeks to erect, but do you know something? When I stood on that platform on that first night, we owed nobody. We fed those 60,000 men; that's right, we fed them for the whole weekend. We killed 40 oxen for one meal. How did we do it? We did it by faith. We tested the Lord, heard a word from God, and did it. We took our tithe to the storehouse. Where is the storehouse? The storehouse is where you get your spiritual food from. The Lord says, "Test me and see if I will not honour you." I want to encourage you today to lift your eyes and ask God because He wants to bless you. He has more than you need and more than you will ever spend, but you must have the right heart and attitude. It is not for you but for Him and His people and the Kingdom of God.Have a wonderful day,Jesus bless you, goodbye.
