During this episode of Nonviolence Radio, Stephanie and Michael discuss a new resource offered by the Metta Center called, Seven Challenges: nonviolence, new story, third harmony, compassion, constructive program, unity in diversity and from chaos to creativity. Their conversation offers some advice as to how to incorporate them into our daily lives so that over time, they become rooted in us, an active part of who we are. Nonviolence, for instance, can be strengthened in each of us by the simple (yet not always easy) practice of cultivating the habit to pause before we react to a perceived aggression, remembering that a “person's anger is not the core inflexible being of that person. That is what makes nonviolence possible.” All of the challenges encourage us to recognize that we can choose – again and again – to exercise nonviolence in our lives. We can choose to see the world not as a fixed external entity that often seems out to harm us, but rather as an ongoing dynamic process which we actively co-create. Though these seven terms are aptly called challenges, ultimately they can be a tremendous source of inspiration and empowerment. And they are available to each and every one of us right now.

Episode 210ABOUT THE EPISODE:When Dr. Robert Schwebel was approached by a local treatment agency about developing a drug program for adolescents, he was not interested. He decided to meet with the agency about the proposal, but also to share hard truths that he thought would encourage them to find someone else: Don't promise drug free kids overnight. Help them learn to make good decisions rather than telling them what to do. Incorporate life counseling. Rather than rejecting him, the program agreed to Robert's suggestions and hired him.Robert hoped to find and tweak an existing treatment program that incorporated these principles, but couldn't find one. In the 1990s, residential treatment centers were cash cows, with professionals often advising parents to place their kids in inpatient treatment at the first sign of experimentation. He describes most of those programs as "watered down 12-Step programs," demanding instant and complete abstinence - which he believed was unrealistic for most adolescents. So he started from scratch. The result was the widely adopted Seven Challenges Program. One of the many programs that have adopted this adolescent-specific model is Elements Wilderness, and Lynn Smith, co-founder, and primary therapist there joins me and Robert to share the provider experience with the Seven Challenges model. We cover:How The Seven Challenges builds a climate of mutual respect and honest discussionWhy practitioners don't insist on drug abstinence when adolescents are engaged in the challengesThe power of asking kids what they like about drugsWhy "come back when you hit rock bottom" is the wrong approachEPISODE RESOURCES:The Seven Challenges websiteElements Wilderness websiteThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram: @hopestreamcommunityDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. As “Help Wanted” signs on the windows of many establishments today have become more prevalent, it is important to consider the qualities young job seekers should learn when entering the job market. Too often, young adults don't take entry-level positions because they feel those jobs are beneath them. In this episode, Tim and Andrew reflect on the early experiences that they had in their career that taught them lessons they may not have learned otherwise. Today you’ll get a sneak-peak from a long-form conversation I had with Dr. Robert Schwebel. Robert Schwebel is a psychologist, author, and the creator of a non 12-step program called “Seven Challenges” Dr. Schwebel's "Seven Challenges" are a practical guide for people, young and old, to really understand their relationship with drugs and alcohol and whether they're happy with that relationship or not. Dr. Schwebel says that-- to the extent that people decide (for themselves) that they have a problem with drugs or alcohol-- not only are the NOT powerless (as AA and other 12-step programs might have them believe) but that they have complete agency to choose the life that they want, and decide how to move away from destructive behavior and towards an overall balanced and good life. - - - - - - - - - - THE LIFE PROCESS PROGRAM-- HOW TO FOLLOW / CONTACT / LEARN MORE ABOUT LPP: Email us - info@lifeprocessprogram.com Text us - +1 (802) - 391 - 4360 LPP MAIN WEB SITE - http://lifeprocessprogram.com Instagram: http://instagram.com/lifeprocessprogram Twitter: http://twitter.com/lifeprocessprgm Facebook: http://facebook.com/lifeprocessprogram --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/message

On today’s episode, we get to have a discussion with the authority on quality leadership, Carey Nieuwhof. When he was a young man working at a law firm, Carey had a vision that he was supposed to be a pastor. Following that calling led him to become a founder of Connexus, now one of the most influential churches in North America. Carey has been an instrument of change that has helped the church evolve drastically over time to better serve its community, and has since found his passion for helping leaders all over the globe thrive and become the best versions of themselves. In this episode, Carey walks us through what to do when we get burned out, exhausted, and life seemingly falls apart. How do we recover from that in a way that helps us become exceptional leaders? How do we learn to balance each important element of our lives, each of which seem to demand too much from us? Carey discusses the difficulties of establishing boundaries in today’s ever-connected world, how to build better relationships with people, and how to live in a way that will help us prosper tomorrow.    Links, Products and Resources Mentioned: Carey Nieuwhof Carey Nieuwhof Leadership Podcast “Didn’t See It Coming: Overcoming the Seven Challenges that No One Expects and Everyone Sees” book Connexus Church Osgoode Hall Law School The Genesee Diary: Report from a Trappist Monastery History of the Eagles Documentary Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Andy Stanley Lysa Terkeurst Archibald D. So thinking about God and His sovereignty in a pretty mechanical way kinds of made sense. Everything is cause and effect. Now with the law of indeterminacy, reality looks so much different and [Steen] says it actually fits the story of the Bible better because the God of the Bible is a God of improvisation.” —John Ortberg    “When you're on the outside looking in, or you're 25 years old, you think, Oh, all these successful people, they're successful because they don't have any struggles right there. They're just really gifted, really talented. They work hard, they hustle and therefore they succeed—and they must not have the struggles that I have. They don't get tired. They don't argue with their spouse. They don't struggle with identity or purpose or any of that. I've had the great privilege over the last decade plus of meeting a lot of the people I used to read or admire or listen to. And you realize, when you get to know them as people, they've all got that story. And one of the ones that almost everyone moves into is the end of what they can accomplish.” —Carey Nieuwhof, on our perception of others   “Most people, if they don’t have a burnout story, there is a pivot that happens where they really, really struggle with, with the limits of what they can do.” —Carey Nieuwhof, on life’s essential moments   “I think one of the traps that got me was, Oh, so working for God must earn me points of some kind. And, oh, to not work harder is probably unfaithfulness. And so all through my thirties I cheated my family. And as our church grew, more people equals more hours, and more success equals more accolades. And I was winning church, but losing at home. And I realized when you're winning at church and losing at home, you're losing. That is a temporary victory, an empiric victory, an empty victory. But it's not really a victory.” —Carey Nieuwhof, on untangling his job from his personal faith   “I think technology has made [life balance] more complicated because we're never really on and we're never really off anymore. You know, the office is something we used to go to and now the office goes to us. And that is really difficult because as a CEO or as a founder or an entrepreneur or a pastor, you've got 11 inboxes and you're available 24/7, and this device that you're using to figure out where you're going to go for dinner with your wife is the same device that your team is emailing you on.”—Carey Nieuwhof, on having life balance “By the time this race is over, I want the people closest to me to be the people who are most grateful for me. I want [my] relationships to be healthy, and good, and real, and the friendships deep, and the team that I actually work with day to day and have to put up with me day to day to want to work with me day to day.” —Carey Nieuwhof, on relationships with others   “We are designed to be fully known by God and by a handful of others.” —Carey Nieuwhof    “Let God go deep—go deep into whatever this dysfunction is, or this season is—go deep. Because if God wants to go deep, it's because He wants to take you far.” —Carey Nieuwhof    “We just get used to mediocre living. We get used to living drained or with a lack of motivation, or inspiration, or elevation, or a dream. And nobody sets out for that. Nobody says, ‘I want to live a life where I'm exhausted or tired or not inspired.’ We just get used to it.” —John Ortberg ________________________    Connect with John Ortberg John Ortberg website Twitter Instagram Facebook

SMART Recovery® is pleased to present a talk with author and developer of The Seven Challenges® Program, Dr. Robert Schwebel. We are interested in learning how to engage youth who have problems with drugs in meaningful conversations and to support them in taking power over their lives. Dr. Schwebel’s work is designed for counseling settings, and we think you’ll find his approach highly complementary with SMART in the continuum of care. In implementing The Seven Challenges Program, many practical lessons have been learned that are helpful in thinking about how to best to serve and collaborate with youth. The conversation focuses on attitudes, strategies, and messages that engage and empower youth, and there will be plenty of time for questions and answers. The Seven Challenges are: We decided to open up and talk honestly about ourselves and about alcohol and other drugs. We looked at what we liked about alcohol and other drugs, and why we were using them. We looked at our use of alcohol or other drugs to see if it has caused harm or could cause harm. We looked at our responsibility and the responsibility of others for our problems. We thought about where we seemed to be headed, where we wanted to go, and what we wanted to accomplish. We made thoughtful decisions about our lives and about our use of alcohol and other drugs. We followed through on our decisions about our lives and drug use. If we saw problems, we went back to earlier challenges and mastered them. The Seven Challenges provide a framework for helping youth think through their own decisions about their lives and their use of alcohol and other drugs. Counselors using The Seven Challenges Program teach youth to identify and work on the issues most relevant to them. In sessions, as youth discuss the issues that matter most, counselors seamlessly integrate the Challenges as part of the conversation.  The Seven Challenges is listed as an evidence-based program in the SAMHSA National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices.  Robert Schwebel, Ph.D., a psychologist specializing in couples and family issues and in the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, provides lectures and training sessions to professional and community audiences around the country and abroad. Please see his website: http://sevenchallenges.com. Dr. Schwebel has developed and directed prevention and counseling programs for schools as well as public and private agencies. He has published numerous articles and is the author of several books including Saying No Is Not Enough: Helping Your Kids Make Wise Decisions About Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs; Keep Your Kids Tobacco-Free; and Who's on Top, Who's on Bottom: How Couples Can Learn to Share Power. In addition, Dr. Schwebel has appeared on The Oprah Show, The Today Show, in numerous CNN interviews, and The CBS Early Show, and currently writes for thefix.com and Pro Talk at rehabs.com.
