Joshua Schwebel speaks to long-time collaborator Lauren Wetmore about their shared interest in closing the gap between how art is discursively framed and what it actually does. Schwebel's artistic practice stems from a deep need to understand the world, coupled with an allergy to authority. “Art is rhetorically positioned as radical,” notes Schwebel, “but what we're doing is advancing capitalism for people who benefit from it and this is not in our interest as artists or workers.” With Nizan Shaked's Museums and Wealth: The Politics of Contemporary Art Collections (Bloomsbury, 2022) as a prompt, Schwebel and Wetmore talk about their upcoming book project, The Employee (forthcoming from Art Metropole in 2025). They also discuss The Paydirt Seminars, a series of talks dedicated to examining the intersections between art, finance, and resource extraction that Schwebel has organized as part of his current exhibition One Hand Washes the Other at Struts Gallery in Sackville, New Brunswick.Momus: The Podcast is edited by Jacob Irish, with production assistance from Chris Andrews. MCALLEN, Texas - Adrian Villarreal, president and CEO of IBC Bank-McAllen, says the North American Free Trade Agreement - now known as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement - has transformed Deep South Texas. Villarreal spoke about his bank's heavy involvement in NAFTA and USMCA while participating in a bankers panel at the City of McAllen's recent 2024 MxLAN International Economic Summit. The discussion was titled “Future of Banking.” In his remarks, Villarreal pointed out that IBC Bank has been around for about 58 years. “We were organized, founded, born here, as a Deep South Texas institution. And so having that type of profile, it's always been very important for us to be champions of economic development here in this area,” Villarreal said. Villarreal said that when he first started at IBC Bank, in the early 1990s, NAFTA was being born. “I remember that there was this sort of electricity in the bank. There were trips being made to Washington, DC. There were executives from the bank that were participating in think tanks, in business committees and councils to give feedback on that original NAFTA agreement. And we're very much engaged in that.” Villarreal continued: “As we know today, when NAFTA first came around, it really transformed this area. I remember back, growing up and we had double digit unemployment numbers. Today, here in the city of McAllen, I believe it's about four to four and a half percent. Incredible progress.” Villarreal said IBC Bank played a key role in fashioning USMCA, just as it did NAFTA. “Even in this last update, to turn NAFTA into USMCA, we were invited to participate, to be part of the think tanks around that.” Villarreal said he remembers talking to the head of IBC's international department (Gerry Schwebel) about the USMCA negotiations. “At the very beginning of those negotiations, he was saying that the table was kind of pretty much empty. It was him, a bunch of policy makers and politicians involved. And then, as the agreement was coming towards an end, everybody showed up. Big Corporate America, big multinational banks, transportation companies, the automobile industry. Obviously, the table was full.” Villarreal said he remembers Schwebel telling him a particular story about the USMCA negotiations. “I remember him telling me a story that, around the table they were kind of looking at him and saying who are you? And it really wasn't a question about how did you sneak into this table? What it really was about is, how do you know so much? I think the reason why is because we take a deep commitment and being a champion of this area, being involved in this area and promoting economic activities that make a real difference.” He continued: “Now, when you look at us transforming from an agricultural society to a trade society, now becoming a medical hub, and the growth in institutions down here, it really kind of started with NAFTA opening that floodgate.” Villarreal added: “And so we take that responsibility very seriously, of being, just as all my peers here want to be, really good corporate citizens. And I think, overall, that engagement and being able to provide economic opportunity for everybody, I think that's one of the things that I've been the most proud about in terms of IBC Bank.”Editor's Note: Here is an audio recording of the bankers panel at the 20214 MXLAN International Economic Summit. DALLAS, Texas - Senior executives from two border-based banks were on a panel that discussed nearshoring. Michael Scaief, chairman of the board and CEO of Texas Regional Bank, and Gerald ‘Gerry' Schwebel, executive vice president of IBC Bank, spoke at the Texas-Mexico Business Forum in Dallas. The moderator was Fernando Sepúlveda, founder and CEO of Emtech and chairman of AEM. It was hosted by the Dallas chapter of the Asociación de Empresarios Mexicanos (AEM). The title of the panel was “Shaping the Future. Financial Services and Nearshoring Insights.” In his remarks, Scaief spoke about disruption and risk. He also spoke about China getting a “foothold” in the North American economy thanks to manufacturing companies moving their operations to that country. But now, he said, some of those companies are coming back. “What we're seeing today is a disruption event that is allowing the opportunity for Mexico and the U.S. to benefit. The question is, how long will it last? And what is the risk of us losing that down the road? What do we have to do today to preserve that long term? So those are the types of things that I'm thinking about when I think about cross border trade,” Scaief said. "There's a lot of nuances that go into making it successful and those are the guys that can do it.” Scaief was referring to the bankers in his team. “I am not the banker. Those are the bankers over there. Those are the guys that do it all. I'm the strategist. So, I can't give you a lot of insight on how we do it in Mexico. What I reflect on is history and how history is repeating itself over time,” Scaief said. Scaief added: “What we're interested about are two things. Well, three things: disruption, risk, and certainty.” In his remarks, IBC's Schwebel spoke about his four decades in the business. He said much of the first 20 years was spent helping U.S. companies enter the Mexican market. He said much of the last 20 years has been helping Mexican companies establish themselves in the U.S. Schwebel said he was more interested in doing business that resulted in long term relationships, rather than one-off deals. He said he sends those deals to other banks. “In my 40 years plus of work, and I've seen a lot of changes. There has been a lot of changes, and it's all been for the good because at the end, as I said last night, it's (about) the people, our customers, our employees. It's that relationship that really builds and allows us to grow together and be part of that economic development and vitality.” Schwebel said he would like those in the audience to leave with a particular thought. “I would like for us to leave today with thinking that, in the competitive world that we're in, we're North American. We're thinking North American. And we need to understand that together as three countries we can compete and work together and compete globally, rather than competing against each other,” Schwebel said. “So instead of saying, I'm from Mexico, how about saying we're from North America and I'm creating jobs in North America, with companies in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. And vice versa, US companies thinking that I'm North American working with with Mexico and creating economic vitality with the whole North American region.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service to read the full story. Hopestream for parenting kids through drug use and addiction
Episode 210ABOUT THE EPISODE:When Dr. Robert Schwebel was approached by a local treatment agency about developing a drug program for adolescents, he was not interested. He decided to meet with the agency about the proposal, but also to share hard truths that he thought would encourage them to find someone else: Don't promise drug free kids overnight. Help them learn to make good decisions rather than telling them what to do. Incorporate life counseling. Rather than rejecting him, the program agreed to Robert's suggestions and hired him.Robert hoped to find and tweak an existing treatment program that incorporated these principles, but couldn't find one. In the 1990s, residential treatment centers were cash cows, with professionals often advising parents to place their kids in inpatient treatment at the first sign of experimentation. He describes most of those programs as "watered down 12-Step programs," demanding instant and complete abstinence - which he believed was unrealistic for most adolescents. So he started from scratch. The result was the widely adopted Seven Challenges Program. One of the many programs that have adopted this adolescent-specific model is Elements Wilderness, and Lynn Smith, co-founder, and primary therapist there joins me and Robert to share the provider experience with the Seven Challenges model. We cover:How The Seven Challenges builds a climate of mutual respect and honest discussionWhy practitioners don't insist on drug abstinence when adolescents are engaged in the challengesThe power of asking kids what they like about drugsWhy "come back when you hit rock bottom" is the wrong approachEPISODE RESOURCES:The Seven Challenges websiteElements Wilderness websiteThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram: @hopestreamcommunityDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Dante Schwebel gained notoriety fronting the San Antonio band Hacienda and performing with the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. Nuevo is Schwebel’s latest project, inspired by the Tex-Mex sound that surrounded his youth in Laredo, Texas. “Querido” is flavored by what the band is calling “Tejano soul.”
Aside from the Rabbi's Sons discussed in Part 1 of this miniseries, the 1960's saw the first music groups in Ohr Chadash, Pirchei and the London School of Jewish Song. From Israel came Chaim Banet and Jo Amar, the latter a pioneer of Morroccan Jewish music. No less important than the performers, the production, composition and arrangements were handled by architects of Jewish music Suki & Ding, Sheya Mendlowitz, Yisroel Lamm and later Moshe Laufer, Mona Rosenblum and Yossi Green. The 1970's saw the new sounds of Diaspora Yeshiva Band and Dudu Fisher, bringing Jewish music to ever wider audiences. Abie Rottenberg commenced his illustrious career this decade with Dveykus and the soon to be crowned king of Jewish music Mordechai Ben David burst on to the scene as well. Capitalizing on their earlier involvement with Pirchei-JEP, Rivie Schwebel and Ali Scharf collaborated once again with a series of albums of Schwebel, Scharf & Levine.
Today you’ll get a sneak-peak from a long-form conversation I had with Dr. Robert Schwebel. Robert Schwebel is a psychologist, author, and the creator of a non 12-step program called “Seven Challenges” Dr. Schwebel's "Seven Challenges" are a practical guide for people, young and old, to really understand their relationship with drugs and alcohol and whether they're happy with that relationship or not. Dr. Schwebel says that-- to the extent that people decide (for themselves) that they have a problem with drugs or alcohol-- not only are the NOT powerless (as AA and other 12-step programs might have them believe) but that they have complete agency to choose the life that they want, and decide how to move away from destructive behavior and towards an overall balanced and good life. - - - - - - - - - - THE LIFE PROCESS PROGRAM-- HOW TO FOLLOW / CONTACT / LEARN MORE ABOUT LPP: Email us - info@lifeprocessprogram.com Text us - +1 (802) - 391 - 4360 LPP MAIN WEB SITE - http://lifeprocessprogram.com Instagram: http://instagram.com/lifeprocessprogram Twitter: http://twitter.com/lifeprocessprgm Facebook: http://facebook.com/lifeprocessprogram --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/message

In this episode, I connect with Ali Schwebel, Managing Director of Beauty Counter, about the beauty industry. We talk about some misconceptions in the beauty industry, what ingredients to watch out for (the minuses), and how to implement a more mindful approach to your beauty routine (the pluses).

“There’s no such thing as drug treatment. What we really need is holistic counselling that incorporates work on the drug issue.” - Robert Schwebel As individuals begin to see that they have addiction issues, they begin to think about change. But to go from contemplating about it to actually taking action is no piece of cake. Dr. Robert Schwebel expands on why people use drugs and why they hesitate on taking that first step towards recovery. He also shares about his Seven Challenges Program, which is used worldwide in motivating individuals to evaluate their lives, consider changes that they want to make, and take steps to implement those changes. But for transformation and recovery to really take place, people need to believe that their life could be better and get in touch with what truly matters to them. Join in to today’s podcast and discover how you can grab hold of that change and make it into a reality.

Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive
We should protect our children from risks, right? Isn’t that our job as parents? This episode comes mid-way in an extended series on the importance of play for children. The interview with Dr. Scott Sampson (https://yourparentingmojo.com/wildchild/) who wrote the book How to Raise a Wild Child, which had tons of practical advice for getting kids outside more, as well as getting outside more with your kids. Today we move on to the topic of risky play. We’ll define it, and discuss its benefits and drawbacks, as well as things we as parents can do to encourage more risky play if we decide we want to do that. Because it turns out that insulating our children from risk may not be such a good thing after all. Other episodes referenced in this show What is the value of play? - Interview Gabriel Dabi-Schwebel d'1min30
In 1835, a Native American woman was somehow left behind when her dwindling island tribe was transferred to the California mainland. She would spend the next 18 years living alone in a world of 22 square miles. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the poignant story of the lone woman of San Nicolas Island. We'll also learn about an inebriated elephant and puzzle over an unattainable test score. Intro: As construction began on Scotland’s Forth Bridge, engineers offered a personal demonstration of its cantilever design. In the 1880s, Manhattan's rationalist "Thirteen Club" held a dinner on the 13th of each month to flout superstition.

In this podcast Gail Greatorex of Product Safety Solutions in Melbourne, Australia talks with David Schwebel, Professor of Psychology, and Associate Dean for Research in the Sciences at University of Alabama at Birmingham. David begins by talking about a series of tragic toddler deaths and how his research led to important changes in the design of a product. David and Gail then discuss the need to think about how children perceive and interact with products. We are interested in learning how to engage youth who have problems with drugs in meaningful conversations and to support them in taking power over their lives. Dr. Schwebel’s work is designed for counseling settings, and we think you’ll find his approach highly complementary with SMART in the continuum of care. In implementing The Seven Challenges Program, many practical lessons have been learned that are helpful in thinking about how to best to serve and collaborate with youth. The conversation focuses on attitudes, strategies, and messages that engage and empower youth, and there will be plenty of time for questions and answers. The Seven Challenges are: We decided to open up and talk honestly about ourselves and about alcohol and other drugs. We looked at what we liked about alcohol and other drugs, and why we were using them. We looked at our use of alcohol or other drugs to see if it has caused harm or could cause harm. We looked at our responsibility and the responsibility of others for our problems. We thought about where we seemed to be headed, where we wanted to go, and what we wanted to accomplish. We made thoughtful decisions about our lives and about our use of alcohol and other drugs. We followed through on our decisions about our lives and drug use. If we saw problems, we went back to earlier challenges and mastered them. The Seven Challenges provide a framework for helping youth think through their own decisions about their lives and their use of alcohol and other drugs. Counselors using The Seven Challenges Program teach youth to identify and work on the issues most relevant to them. In sessions, as youth discuss the issues that matter most, counselors seamlessly integrate the Challenges as part of the conversation. The Seven Challenges is listed as an evidence-based program in the SAMHSA National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices. Robert Schwebel, Ph.D., a psychologist specializing in couples and family issues and in the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, provides lectures and training sessions to professional and community audiences around the country and abroad. "Child-Sized History - How Young ReadersAre Taught To Conceptualize History" Guest: Sara Schwebel Sara Schwebel believes employing historical novels in the classroom can help students understand the ways in which our past can have relevance to our present. Unlike textbooks, which are replaced on regular cycles and subjected to constant politicking, Schwebel explains to Allen and our listeners how these works can capture a range of interpretive voices across time and place, a kind of "people's history" far removed from today's state-sanctioned textbooks.
