Join me, Cal Hardage, on the Grazing Grass Podcast for an enlightening discussion on the intricacies of cattle raising, where we examine the second part of the Lasater Philosophy, focusing on the significance of reproductive efficiency in beef production. Discover Tom Lasater's unconventional approach to heifer retention, advocating for breeding at a young age and the merits of a condensed, 65-day breeding period. Listen in as I reflect on the initial hesitation surrounding these methods, the advantages they present for calving ahead of the herd, and how this strategy can transform a grass-fed beef operation. The dialogue invites ranchers to engage with these breeding philosophies and assess their practical applications on the field. The episode also delves into the emotional and economic challenges of herd management, sharing a personal tale of a difficult calving and the subsequent culling decision, highlighting the necessity of record-keeping in monitoring herd progress. Explore the concept of performance testing in natural environments, the principle of direct selection in breeding, and how immediate, decisive changes can yield a more efficient herd. Engage with the narrative of how ignoring non-essential traits and prioritizing reproductive efficiency can dramatically enhance a ranch's productivity, as we dissect these topics with the wisdom gleaned from experiences both personal and shared by others in the field, including insights from Allen Williams, as discussed in the Herd Quitter podcast.
Lizzie and Judith Lasater return to catch up with J and talk about their latest offering, a free mini-course in Restorative Yoga to Support Menopause and Beyond. They discuss teaching during the last few years of transition, the genesis of their new course on menopause, generational differences, adapting practice, viewing body changes as a process vs treating a condition, menopause belly, exercise vs innercise, feeling rushed, places of refuge, positive aspects of aging, biopsychosocial self-care, and some keys to a long healthy life. Listen in as I share the inspiration behind my latest discussion on the Lasater Philosophy of Cattle Raising, a methodology deeply rooted in my livestock upbringing and influenced by Allen Williams' insights from the Herd Quitter podcast. We walk through the foundational principles of cattle breeding, emphasizing the crucial role of disposition and the benefits of cultivating calmer, more manageable herds. Personal anecdotes shed light on the significance of these practices, and I explore how low-stress handling techniques not only enhance animal welfare but also contribute to the efficiency of day-to-day farm operations. This conversation extends into the essential components of a successful livestock breeding program, as we talk about the importance of milk production as a performance indicator, selecting the right breed, and the strategic investment in quality genetics. We consider the intricacies of creating a closed herd, the compatibility of management styles, and the impact of animal temperament on breeding outcomes. I encourage our Grazing Grass community to join the discussion, sharing their own experiences and insights into the rich tapestry of cattle raising philosophy.

Many of you may not know about Chad Lasater, but you should. He's the current champion of the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning (having finished the GS in both 2021 and 2022) and after a breakthrough performance at Desert Solstice (his first real 24-hour race) he is currently in position for a spot on the US team for the World Championships this fall. We recorded this in late 2022, shortly after Chad's awesome run at DS, where he narrowly missed Bob Hearn's 50+ American Record, but I've been too busy to release the show until now—which is great, since Chad has an insanely busy year about to start up. In this episode, we reminisce about the good old days in the late 2010s, when Phil and I were still able to kind of keep up with Chad, and we try to figure out The Secret behind his incredible progress in the sport and how he is able to be running huge PRs into his 50s. Then, it's time for a very entertaining 20 Questions; Chad has raced 25 100s all over the world and has a million stories to share.Links:Follow Chad on IG - zero posts so far!Beer for this episode: Wicked Weed PerniciousIntro music: "Fine Line" by the BloodlettersOutro music: "When I Was Still Young" by Yard Sale

For this episode, I sat down with Judith Hanson Lasater. Judith has a Ph.D in East-West psychology, she’s a trained, Physical Therapist and has been teaching yoga since 1971. She trains students and teachers throughout the United States as well as abroad. She is the co-founder of Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco and a founder of the Yoga Journal magazine and is president of the California Yoga Teachers Association. She has written eight books, including her most recent one called: Restore and Rebalance: Yoga for Deep Relaxation.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKE-AWAY FROM THIS EPISODE:1- Restorative yoga is remembering to be still every day. When we are still, silence arises. When silence arises, fear melts away. When fear melts away, there's space for spontaneous gratitude, joy, compassion and empathy. From there's an integration of our being.2- You can't force yourself to relax, but you can carve out 20 minutes a day to do nothing. Doing nothing is the best thing you can do for yourself. It's a radical thing. No music, no talking, no recording. Do it in a place you feel safe and it's quiet. 3- It will start to notice that your mind is a drunken monkey. Pay attention to the sensations of breaths and you'll create radical presence. Becoming aware of sensation is a practice of body-fulness on top of mind-fulness. 4- The body is always trying to reach out homeostasis. Stress is the most important disruptor of that state of homeostasis. Worrying is praying for what you don't want. so let's focus on what you don't want.Physiologically, it takes at least 15 min to relax, if you are well rested.5- The light is the most stimulating thing to the nervous system.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE :Can you define what is restorative yoga and explain what is special about it or different than other styles of yoga?Do you think it's a more meditative practice compare to other asana practices? What are the benefits, or positive effects of this practice? How do you take the weight of stress off the body? What are the stages of Savasana?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!DONATE OR BECOME AN EXCLUSIVE MEMBER TODAY.Thank you so much for listening and being part of our 58th episode! John P. Lasater IV is a representational painter whose works are a synthesis of nature, perception, and deep roots in art history. And by deep roots, I mean, he’s not fixated on the 19th century triumvirate of Sargent, Sorolla, and Zorn. Though he appreciates what each of them have accomplished, John seeks to study other artists who practiced their craft over the centuries. By not limiting himself to the influence and lessons of a just a few 19th century representational artists, John’s approach to painting is broadened and enriched. For several years John worked for a greeting card company. The deadline driven environment and the constant flow of different projects certainly contributed positively to John’s skill as an artist. However, John yearned for the freedom to paint what he wanted, and to become a full-time painter. He was uncertain about taking such a leap. However, a close friend of his helped him be decisive, set his priorities, and clarify his focus. With the support of his wife and family, he dove into painting full-time. John is a person who actively seeks out challenges in growing as a painter. At first, painting outdoors was a significant part of John’s career as a painter. Now he spends more time in his studio working on even more challenging and ambitious paintings. A close look at his paintings show that over time John's work has evolved from his early impressionistic, bravado brushwork to, more recently, a quieter, thoughtful, simpler approach. John is not content to simply paint - he has a burning desire to share the lessons he’s learned as a painter. It’s therefore no surprise, then, that he considers himself more of a teacher than an artist. He thoroughly enjoys helping others take on the challenge of growing as artists. Clearly, whether he is teaching or painting, John Lasater is a man who is always aiming for something higher. Links From This Episode: John P. “I was a Daddy's Girl. I'd always pictured him walking me down the aisle.”Michelle pierces people's body parts for a living. I gave her a Lyft to Lasater's Coffee & Tea - Riverside and then off to work. She's a fantastic representative for No Egrets Tattoo Studio. Her personality is outstanding and it was so kind when she offered to buy me a coffee on the way.I have no intention of ever getting anything pierced but if I did I'd go to Michelle without a second thought. She's been at it for around six years so I'm pretty sure she's a bad azz.She mentioned how her father had passed away from cancer at the end of May. I'd asked how she was holding up and she said, “It eventually happens to everyone, I'm doing okay.” I'm pretty good at reading between the lines and could tell she has some hurt lingering around. I mean it's barely been over a month so it's totally understandable. Her only wish is that her father could be around to walk her down the aisle on her wedding day. I had to turn away from her for a second after she said that because it got to me a little. All I can say is this...Michelle is a 28-year-old with her whole life ahead of her. She's already found her passion and that's unusual for anyone, especially at her age. Every day she'll get stronger and has the spirit to conquer any curveball life will throw her way.I know all of that because she told me her daddy prepared her for life. The cool thing about this story... I feel like I know her dad. He is part of who she is without a doubt. He will be there to walk her down the aisle. Each episode of #RideShareStories is made possible by Pbody's - Clarksville Country Club, EXIT One Real Estate MetroNet-Clarksville TN, & Deb Wilson!
