Welcome back to the Voices of Wisdom and one of my favorite guests to have on the show, Sheira Kahn! Sheira is a staple on the Voices of Wisdom because of her playful depth, practical insight, and generous heart. She is also an eating coach as well as a Marriage & Family therapist. She developed a body of work called Eat in Peace, in which she supports her clients to transform their relationship with food and their bodies so they can live their lives to the fullest. My experience of Sheira is that she is brilliant, and as a former bulimic, is intimate with what it takes to heal our relationship with our inner selves from the inside out. To check out Sheira's work, head over to www.eatinpeace.love. Sheira is one of the most loving people I have ever met, and I cannot recommend her work enough!! In this week's sweet episode, we dive into: What learning to love ourselves really looks and feels like How loving ourselves can be deeply vulnerable and courageous How to balance the superego The importance of adopting an observer perspective What the difference is between ego-syntonic and ego-dystonic Why we must learn to love ourselves before relationship & so much more! If you'd like to let me know what you learned on this show or would like to reach out to say hello or inquire about coaching together, you can do so at www.vickyaldana.com or via Instagram @vickylizette.
Holistic means looking at ourselves in a way that includes our entire being, taking each part of ourselves into consideration. When we stop measuring ourselves by how we look, how thin we are, or how much weight we've lost, we can begin to embrace all the physical, emotional and spiritual parts of ourselves. We move beyond the goals of having a certain body type and into the integrity and magic of the recovery process itself. Sheira Kahn is a Marriage and Family Therapist and fully recovered bulimic. She holds degrees from UC Berkeley and the California Institute of Integral Studies. Ms. Kahn taught in the UC Berkeley Extension certificate program in Eating and Weight Disorders for ten years. In the 1990s, she studied inner critic disengagement with Byron Brown and natural eating with Judy Wardell. These discourses became the pillars of her method on ending disordered eating. Later, she trained in couples counseling, where the research on attachment provided the final pieces to the puzzle of understanding disordered eating and how to heal it. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
I'm just SO excited to share this conversation with all of you. When Sheira Kahn and I get together to record a podcast, magic happens! It's truly special. Back in the Spring of 2022, Sheira and I got together to talk about how to work with the inner critic in a powerful way. This is somethign we can all resonate with – the perennial question of, “how do we work with the chatty, sometimes intense inner critical voice inside?” In this conversation, we take things one layer deeper by entering into the realm of the ‘Id.' This is the primal, animal part of ourselves…but as you'll hear, we have not been fair to this part of the human psyche. We have discarded it, and cast it into the shadows. In doing so, we have robbed ourselves of a much-need connection to the vital, life-force energy. In this episode, we'll dive into: Why it's important to get to know our “Id”, our animal, instinctual nature What we weren't taught in school about the “Id” How the “Id” interacts with the Superego and the Ego What the possibilities are for your life by interacting with the “Id” – magic can happen! Which parts of the psyche correspond to life force energy Why we're so afraid of our “Id” How the Wizard of Oz is a tale of integrating shadow And so much more! If you want to work with or find out more about Sheira Kahn, I could not recommend more that you check out her website: https://sheirakahn.com/ As mentioned in the podcast, Sheira Kahn's upcoming class on disordered eating + the healing available is called “Eat In Peace”

This week's episode is with an amazing guest – Sheira Kahn, Marriage Family Therapist and Coach. Ms. Kahn is the co-author of The Erasing Ed Treatment Manual, and co-host of the podcast, Two Wise Women Talking. What does it mean to live with an inner critic or any self sabotaging voice? How do we work with our own inner critic, that negative voice in our heads that tells us we can't do this or that we're not enough? When the inner critic is too big, it can become tyrannical. And who can't relate to that harsh inner self-critical voice? In this episode, we discuss getting into your body and feeling contact with the present moment and with your circumstances to overcome the inner critic. My guest, Sheira Kahn MFT, and I discuss the tools we use and share with others to move through the trauma that causes the “super ego” and work with yourself. We're exploring: The connection with shame and the inner critic The inner critic as a barrier to being able to know your true nature How the ego and the superego work together Working your practices can really make a difference Looking for physical, emotional and cognitive signs of escalation Dis-identifying with the inner critic To learn more about Sheira Kahn, MFT visit her website https://www.sheirakahn.com/. You’re in for a treat today.Get ready to feel a lot of excitable energy.Listen nowThis beautiful woman and I did some work together in October.Which means you’re getting the 6 month transformation—including the aha moments and holy shits—from my client who is a canon that shoots joy. When you’re around her, you feel her joy because it’s so genuine. She’s an Enneagram Type 3 but was in that 65-70% category of being mistyped—and grossly mistyped. She was told she was a 7. But through our sessions, we were able to narrow down why she’s a 3, even though she may look 7 like sometimes. If you’ve been through tough times, you can overcome them. And my client Sheira is a beautiful example of the rise that can come from a wreckage that blindsides you. This is especially hard for 3s, because their worth is very tied up in what other people think of them. But hitting rock bottom is oftentimes where the most beautiful transformation can happen—if you’re willing to put in the work.Quotes:1:38If you’ve been through hard things, I’m here to tell you that you can overcome them!2:23Although it’s never fun when we’re hitting ground zero and rock bottom, that’s where the most beautiful transformation can happen if you’re open and willing to do the work.7:51Enneagram 3’s typically have this sentence ‘when I do this, I will feel, be do, xyz’ and you’re constantly moving the finish line.12:20Anytime I try to be like a 3, I get pissed, I get exhausted. There is a very, very dark and lonely side when you’re an Enneagram 3. 7:12A lot of times when we are working so hard to keep an image, we’ll talk around things, and I tend to trigger a lot of 3’s because I can see through it.26:57 Sheira I want nothing more in my heart than for women like me to show up for themselves. 29:47A 3 when they’re pushed beyond measure, they take on some of the unhealthier dark side of the 9.30:34A 3 just will power through things and sacrifice their body, their relationships, their health, all the things in order to put on the show.31:55The 3’s are in the feeling center, and their underlying emotion is shame, however, very rarely will you see a 3 in shame because they’re in hiding under the covers.40:28 SheiraYou have permission to move in the direction that feels good in your soul that’s going to allow other women to experience the transformation that you’ve experienced, and it’s okay that you don’t know exactly what that’s going to look like.45:13I don’t even want to say we have the opportunity, I think we have the RESPONSIBILITY to show up for ourselves.

Every once in a while, we get to meet someone so multifaceted and interesting that they shift the way we think about the number of paths we can take during our lifetime. This week’s interview was one of those conversations for me. This week, you’re going to meet Sheira Brayer. Sheira is an empowerment speaker, an award-winning songwriter, the author of the book “Motiv8: 8 Ways to Rock Your Own World,” and a mom. Sheira is on a mission to educate, guide, and inspire mothers and their young daughters with the tools and skills they need to feel better in their own skin! Imagine that! Focusing on one of the most important relationships we’ll ever have - the one we have with ourselves! Imagine if every single person in the world made it their mission to understand, support, and love themselves as fully as they possibly could. Imagine how different our world would be?! I absolutely adored this conversation! Not only is Sheira so entertaining to chat with, but she takes such a creative approach toward the empowerment work she does. Yes, her curriculum is incredible, but the way she infuses her musical ability into it to generate even bigger results is just remarkable. I know you’re going to love this conversation! In particular, we touch on: Self Awareness - I am willing to bet that I could pick almost anyone at random off of the street and they could benefit from increasing their level of self-awareness. This is one of the areas where we “don’t know what we don’t know,” and the more time and effort you put toward getting to know yourself at a deep and intimate level, the better chance you have of living in alignment with that authentic person inside of you. Self Beliefs - The views you have about yourself will impact the way you interact with others. Isn’t that profound?! Not only do we project our own beliefs onto other people, but once we understand where our motivations and habits come from, we can start to understand why other people might act and react the way that they do. Talk about a way to foster compassion and empathy! Personal Development - Friends, I got on a soapbox with this one. So many times, people down-play the impact of working on yourself. Of becoming a better person. Of showing up in the best way you possibly can. I’ll circle back to something I said before - IMAGINE IF EVERYONE DID! We’d live in such a more vibrant, incredible world. So, from that perspective, self-improvement is not selfish, it’s a good deed we’re all doing for society. Recently, I announced my partnership with Ashley Smith to form Peak Mind: The Center for Psychological Strength. Think of it as a gym membership for your mind! We’re so excited about this new venture that we’re offering a FREE 4-part Achieve Your Peak video series. Sign up now - the doors won’t be open for long!
