Well, this year has certainly taken a turn for the unexpected! On Tuesday, January 7th, the Palisades Fire broke out in LA and we evacuated that evening, and didn't return back to LA for 3.5 weeks.   In this solo episode, I share some reflections from the last several weeks. I highlight some themes: When timelines shift (and grounding into this…) Impermanence (everything is constantly changing) Spiritual bypass (& the impulse to want to fix, rather than feel) Giving and receiving (the flow and intertwining of these energies) Living closer to the truth (& the discomfort of this!) I hope you enjoy, and as always feel free to reach out with your thoughts! If you want to get in touch, email me at vicky@vicky-aldana.com or reach out to me on Instagram at @vickylizette.

On this week's episode of the Voices of Wisdom, I have the great pleasure of talking to Anne Upczak-Garcia, the author of the heart-wrenching, deep, beautiful story in the book Among Walkers.  Being the daughter of a Venezuelan family, this book broke my heart into pieces. Not only did it illuminate a migrant crisis (the ramifications of which I was not fully aware of) but it also illuminated my own sadness of being disconnected from my homeland. In this podcast episode, we talk about: What Venezuela was like in the 90s How Venezuela got to this point + a few historical events Why Anne wrote this story as an American woman Why Anne decided to give the book a happy ending What happens when a government has so much control The heartbreak of being disconnected from one's homeland And so much more!!   Anne is a writer, mother and educator. I'm just SO excited to share this conversation with all of you. When Sheira Kahn and I get together to record a podcast, magic happens! It's truly special.  Back in the Spring of 2022, Sheira and I got together to talk about how to work with the inner critic in a powerful way. This is somethign we can all resonate with – the perennial question of, “how do we work with the chatty, sometimes intense inner critical voice inside?” In this conversation, we take things one layer deeper by entering into the realm of the ‘Id.' This is the primal, animal part of ourselves…but as you'll hear, we have not been fair to this part of the human psyche. We have discarded it, and cast it into the shadows. In doing so, we have robbed ourselves of a much-need connection to the vital, life-force energy.  In this episode, we'll dive into: Why it's important to get to know our “Id”, our animal, instinctual nature What we weren't taught in school about the “Id” How the “Id” interacts with the Superego and the Ego What the possibilities are for your life by interacting with the “Id” – magic can happen! Which parts of the psyche correspond to life force energy Why we're so afraid of our “Id” How the Wizard of Oz is a tale of integrating shadow And so much more! In this episode, Omid, my boyfriend Cameron, and I dive deep into the mysticism of ancient Iran, exploring how the timeless wisdom of Rumi, Hafez, Ferdowsi and other Persian spiritual masters can guide us in the deepening of our love and the evolution of our consciousness.  According to Omid, Persian mystical poetry's emphasis on the centrality of love provides us with a relatable doorway through which to enter into higher states of non-dual awareness. Rather than treating these writings as mere intellectual artifacts, Omid encourages us to discover how they may resonate with what we already know deep down in our soul, and then to apply that inner knowing in our own lives.  We also discuss: Approaching ancient writings in their original language  Applying timeless wisdom to the challenges of our time  Taking spiritual masters of the past as our teachers  The meaning of intuition and visionary certainty  Allowing our relationship with Divine Love to soften life's challenges How the gentleness of poetry, and the ambiguity of symbolism, can allow wisdom to penetrate more deeply into the soul And so much more!    To learn more about Omid's courses and publications, you can check out his website here:  https://sites.google.com/site/youniversalcenter/home   And the YOUniversal center's instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/youniversalcenter/

I feel so touched and honored to have Harvey Ruderian on this week's episode of the Voices of Wisdom podcast. A profoundly masterful bodyworker whose history of spiritual and political revolutionary work stretches back into the counterculture movements of the 60's and 70's, Harvey has precisely the kind of deep, elder wisdom transmission that this podcast was designed to share with the world. Although our conversation covers a wide range of topics, they all point back to the interrelationship between spirituality and politics. For Harvey, to be a healer is to be a revolutionary, committed to ending the war in the body. We discuss how it is just as courageous and revolutionary a move to face your core wounds and traumas as it is to face the negativity and institutionalized suffering in this world – for both moves ultimately arise from a desire for freedom, for liberation, and the continued evolution of consciousness.  Paraphrasing the depth psychologist James Hillman, Harvey reminds us that we can't just sit here and deny politics and just work on our inner child. Rather, by attending to our social and political environments, we can move from an ego-centric spirituality to a world-centric or even cosmic-centric spirituality, cultivating a love that extends both inwards to our deepest wounds and outwards to those around us who need it most. We also cover: The revolutionary teachings of Jesus, and how subversive they were for his society The art of surrender Using indigenous ritual to connect to the earth The role of eros and nature in facilitating deep healing The evolutionary biology of our chronic hyper-vigilance Aiming for a shift in consciousness, rather than a shift in technology, to liberate the world And so much more!   If you want to connect with me, shoot me an email at hello@vicky-aldana.com. This is a very special episode with an old and dear friend of mine, Dace James Hines. Dace and I met in 2014, while living in San Francisco. We spent much time together in those days, so this conversation is a reconnection of old friends. It just so happened that, when I reached out to Dace to have him on the podcast to share what he's learned about being diagnosed with brain cancer at age 31, I learned that he had recently completed his first Vipassana meditation retreat a few months earlier. Since I just completed my first Vipassana retreat a few weeks ago, we decided to debrief our powerful ten-day meditation retreat experiences while simultaneously taking the opportunity to highlight Dace's life – in particular the wisdom and insights he's gained from facing existential questions of life and death so early in life.  As you'll hear in the podcast, Dace has lived a unique life. He recently turned 40, and there are so many reasons to celebrate that and the beautiful, artistic way he lives his life. Dace is a travel and event photographer, depolarization advocate, and former technologist. He is also a brain cancer survivor, peer mentor and advisor for UCSF's Sobrato Brisson Brain Cancer Survivorship program. Recognizing the critical lack of psychosocial support for young adults diagnosed with brain cancer, he's the co-founder and facilitator of the country's first Young Adult Brain Tumor Support Group (called YABS for short), and a current coach in training with the Cancer Journey Institute. His focus is on helping individuals (especially young adults)connect with their inner wisdom while navigating the life-changing challenges of a cancer diagnosis, and learn to embrace it as an opportunity for emotional, relational, and spiritual growth, and to live a more meaningful life.   In this podcast, we: Debrief what the heck is Vipassana and why one would do it? Share our experiences of the 10-day silent meditation retreat What the silence brought up for each of us Talk about how a meditation retreat can decrease our reactivity (and how decreasing reactivity has many positive effects!) Review the importance of equanimity Explore Dace's brain cancer journey and how it has impacted his philosophy of living And so much more!   To get in touch with Dace, you can reach out to him via email at dacejames@gmail.com. Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2023 57:37

I'm so excited to have Lynne Forrest back on the Voices of Wisdom podcast for the second time. This time, Lynne and I talk about how to use our painful and polarizing life situations as alchemical crucibles for the awakening of our consciousness. Lynne teaches that, when we choose to see life as an adventure, and every part of that adventure as perfect and holy, then even the scariest situations tend to transmute into love. The prerequisite for this transmutation is to take 100% responsibility for our experience in life. That means recognizing that everything we encounter is a reflection of our own mind, and that we ultimately get to choose how to meet that reflection. Rather than demonizing and vilifying the more shadowy, challenging experiences we find ourselves in, we can befriend these experiences and allow them to take us deeper into ourselves and into our spirituality. In this episode, we talk about: Transmuting energy by observing our beliefs   Taking radical self-responsibility Anger as an agent of transformation Uniting the opposites Gratitude as fuel for flow The shadow realm that is this world And so much more!   If you'd like to find out more about Lynne's work, or schedule a session with her, you can find out more on her website: https://www.lynneforrest.com/ You can also purchase her book, Guiding Principles for Life Beyond Victim Consciousness, here: https://www.amazon.com/Guiding-Principles-Beyond-Victim-Consciousness/dp/0615401449/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1KIQ3IZF2HU6W&keywords=lynne+forrest&qid=1692321010&sprefix=lynne+forres%2Caps%2C409&sr=8-1

I'm so excited to talk to my friend Marissa Ward about the magic of being mixed-race in an often polarizing world. We talk about how, as the child of an Italian mom and African-American dad, Marissa grew up feeling like she had to choose to identify as either white or black — categories that didn't allow for the full complexity of who she was.  This inner tension, and the often painful experience of being in a world that felt confused by her very existence, gave rise to an inquiry into the true nature of her identity — into who she really is, separate from other people's assumptions and expectations.  Marissa shares how, over time, she came to recognize that her mixed identity allowed her to act as a bridge between worlds and cultures. Along the way, she came to see race as the key to union, as opposed to separation.  In this episode, we talk about:  Feeling at home in yourself How belonging comes from within  Alchemizing pain into medicine Fluidity as a superpower  Erotic energy as a catalyst for healing  And so much more!   If you want to get in touch with Marissa to learn more about her coaching, and her forthcoming e-book and programs, you can find her on instagram here:  https://www.instagram.com/redemptress

We discuss how, by gradually releasing our attachment to external safety (in the form of what Dr. Sami refers to as ‘binkies,' such as wetsuits, buoys, and flippers) we can come into deeper relationship with ourselves and our fears and cultivate resilience and courage. Dr Sherry Sami is the founder of Happy Kids Dental Planet in Agoura Hills, CA. She practices neuro-development orthodontics and compassionate medicine. On Episode 19, “Why Play is Healing”, I welcomed Improv Shaman, Keli Semelsberger, onto the show to talk about the power of play. I was so moved about the work Keli does in the realm of improv that I decided to invite her back to discuss some of our other common interests highlighting the intersection between play and ritual.  On this week's episode, Keli and I specifically dive into the experience of grief. Are you like the millions of others who have experienced loss over the last couple of years? I wager that if you didn't answer yes to that question, there may be a layer on your heart placed there for your curious consideration. What would be available if we all began to peel back the layers of our hearts, feel what's there, and allow others to witness us? Join us as we explore: The importance of feeling grief How grief can be intentionally harnessed in a ritual setting The tradition of grief rituals in West Africa Why community is important in the process of grief How to accept grief into our lives more deeply What is available by giving ourselves permission to feel Why grief is the key to our healing And SO MUCH MORE!   To learn more about me & my coaching practice, please visit www.vickyaldana.com.  You can also reach out to me directly at hello@vicky-aldana.com or follow me on my instagram, @vickylizette.

Have you also noticed that a little forgiveness could go a long way in your life? We did, too. In this week's episode, I invite previous Voices of Wisdom Project guest Reverent Joanne Coleman back onto the show to join me in debriefing the 3-week program we co-led in February 2022.  The Art of Forgiveness was a powerful and potent container that was suggested to me by Spirit from a message I got while meditating in early January. The message was: Forgiveness is Power. In my deep delve on forgiveness, I found that not only are the majority of people baffled by the concept of forgiveness but most of us could use some practice in that area.  In this short episode, we explore how the concept of forgiveness worked its way through us, as the co-leaders of this program. We look at how our relationship to forgiveness shifted, what we had to forgive in our lives, and what the participants of the program got out of the experience. We excitedly announce that we'll be leading another The Art of Forgiveness (now 4 weeks long!) beginning April 28th. If you are interested, please reach out to me at vicky@vicky-aldana.com for the application.  To wrap up, I share an update to the podcast announcing that I will feature interviews with both men and women moving forward. You can say goodbye to seasons as well as the podcast is here to stay and will bring you a weekly episode for the foreseeable future :)    To learn more about me & my coaching practice, please visit www.vickyaldana.com.  You can also reach out to me directly at hello@vicky-aldana.com or follow me on my instagram, @vickylizette.
