Why We Can't Forget the Reason for Memorial Day – 282

We tend to gloss over the intention behind Memorial Day each year as we prep for a long weekend full of good food, games, and time at the beach. But to be clear: We wouldn't be able to enjoy any of those things without others' sacrifices. To keep this truth top of mind as we approach the holiday weekend, Darlene Brock and Julie Bender walk through the history of the national holiday and share the startling numbers of those lost in recent wars. There is a depth and gravity to the topic that's worthy of honor and remembrance, including the first recorded Memorial Day celebration in which former slaves from Charleston, South Carolina, gathered to honor the Union soldiers lost during the war in 1865. If you've felt removed from the reason for Memorial Day, we urge you to take a listen to this short but meaningful podcast episode. Quote of the episode: “We should honor and remember the sacrifice of those who have [answered the call to go off and fight a war], and even immensely more those who have given their lives on the battlefield.”—Julie Bender Resources Related Learn more about how the Wounded Warrior Project honor and supports veterans Mentioned Read more about the first recorded Memorial Day celebration here Check out the Smart Living book series here! On September 9, 2024 we published a show titled, Your Nervous System Is Controlling You & How To Master It. My guests were Jennifer Mann and Karden Rabin and my muse was their new book, The Secret Language of The Body. In our long conversation, Karden brought up his “Emotional Cold Plunge” exercise and I was incredibly intrigued. He gave me access to his community at somiainternational.com/ which I joined and went through the exercise. I ended up engaging more and just felt really attracted to Kardin's guidance and spirit and found myself wondering how he had ended up where he is today. HIs bio says, Karden is a nervous system medicine practitioner and an expert in the fields of trauma and psychophysiological disorders. Over the last fifteen years he has combined principles of bodywork, brain retraining, and somatic trauma therapies and helped thousands of clients across the globe heal from chronic pain and illness. Karden is the Co-Founder of SOMIA and a regular contributor to Bessel Van Der Kolk's Trauma Research Foundation and has led programming for The Wounded Warrior Project and Starbucks. But what you are about to hear is that Karden had severe asthma and almost died. He was very neglected as a child and often in tears, bored, and alone in his pain. From this, up to age 19, Karden says he became, an asshole. A bully. He was mean and used cleverness and criticism like a sword.Being a poser was identity and he worked to get tablescraps of validation from cool kids. He was good at making fun of people to get a laugh. But then…something happened. The majority of real estate agents don't sell multimillion dollar ‘luxury' properties.   Many certainly want to, but most never get the opportunity.    For a host of reasons, including a longer sales cycle, competition with new construction, and the perception of having to deal with a more sophisticated clientele.    But the main reason, according to Harif Hazera, has more to do with psychology, mindset, and limiting beliefs such as…   I'm not educated or sophisticated enough to deal with that crowd…   I'm not worthy…   Who am I to think I can sell multimillion dollar properties!   In this riveting episode, Harif makes a compelling case for becoming a luxury specialist, and how to break through any mental barriers that may be holding you back.   Here's a sample of what we discuss:   ·        The #1 thing that enabled Harif to start selling multimillion dollar properties. ·        Why most real estate agents fail. ·        What sellers are looking for most in a real estate agent (this will surprise you!) ·        How to overcome the crippling limiting belief “I'm not worthy”. ·        The biggest difference between selling a luxury listing… and a traditional listing.  ·        Don't position yourself as a real estate “agent”.  Do this instead to stand out from the crowd… ·        How to transition from agent to investor… ·        The key to start “attracting” money to fund your deals. ·        What real estate agents REALLY sell… ·        Why you must become an “owner” if you want to build true wealth. ·        The smartest and most strategic people in the world point to this skill as the #1 key to their success (it's not what you think!). ·        4 steps to selling anything… ·        How to raise $25M… before you even have a deal! ·        Proof that your network equals your net worth. ·        Much, much more!!   More about Harif Hazera: Harif Hazera is one of Central Florida's most trusted and top-selling luxury real estate advisors.  He's ranked among the top 1% of all real estate agents nationwide with over 100 million dollars in personal sales, and holds numerous seven figure sales in the Central Florida real estate market. Purple Heart Honoree, Vietnam Veteran ~Ron Drach was a Presidential Appointee along with my Mentor in College when I was at Howard University,He is a subject matter expert in military and veterans issues with more than 50 years of experience. After losing a leg as a result of combat in Vietnam, Ron medically retired from the U.S. Army in 1967 with a Purple Heart.Soon after, he focused his life on working to help his fellow disabled veterans. Following nearly three years with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), he joined the staff of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) in 1970. Beginning in DAV's Pittsburgh office, Ron rapidly rose to become the organization's national employment director in 1975. He was the first Vietnam veteran to be appointed a director at DAV. In this post, he established the reputation he maintains today as one of the nation's foremost authorities on employment issues impacting veterans and others whose lives have been affected by disabilities. Ron's responsibilities led him to provide significant input into America's response to the needs of veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder, homelessness, racial and gender discrimination and other socio-economic issues. He became a leading voice on questions involving Social Security disability benefits, as well as efforts to remove barriers that impede the lives and employment of people with disabilities. Many times throughout his career, Ron has appeared before congressional committees, offering expertise and recommendations for legislative change. After leaving the DAV, Ron was employed by the U.S. Department of Labor's Veterans' Employment and Training Service (DOL/VETS). As the director of government and legislative affairs, he was responsible for working with congressional staff, the Department's Office of the Solicitor and others within the agency on all legislative employment issues that affect the departments of Defense, Labor and Veterans Affairs. The expert singing voice of Marine veteran and Nashville-headquartered singer-songwriter Sal Gonzalez warms up and brings to fruition a special celebration event held last week by Rush Truck Centers in Nashville, Tennessee, in this edition of Overdrive Radio. Rush was announcing the big winner of the quite expensive, final, only 2025 build of a Peterbilt 389. A 389X, to be exact, that Rush Truck Centers won the final 389 build slot for, with Pete retiring the model for good. As Rush Enterprises CEO Rusty Rush explains in the podcast, the build slot was awarded after an auction among Pete dealers and was secured for 1.5 million dollars. Peterbilt and Rush donated those proceeds then to the well-known Wreaths Across America and Truckers Against Trafficking nonprofits, then held a sweepstakes delivering another half a million to the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) org: https://www.overdriveonline.com/equipment/article/15705889/last-of-the-389s-goes-to-oklahoma-small-fleet-shane-best-trucking That's where songwriter Gonzalez enters the picture. In the podcast, hear Gonzalez's harrowing, moving story of losing part of his left leg in Iraq, then returning home to pursue a songwriter's dream only to fall into an addictive pattern and seek out the support of WWP. Likewise, get ready for a moving song, "Heroes," Gonzalez wrote as a result of his subsequent work with the nonprofit, inspired by fellow veterans and his own experience. We'll hear, too, from Rusty Rush, detailing the sweepstakes and its ultimate winners, Shane Best Trucking owners Jennifer and Shane Best, out of Pryor, Oklahoma. The win was fitting for the small fleet owners in more ways than one – the 379X will add to their fleet of 17 Peterbilts doing dump work around their region, yet don't expect a lot of wear and tear on it. The Bests plan to keep the rig around for many years to come, working with Rush Truck Center hands in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to finish out the rig with back-end mods as a show unit. With any luck, work should conclude in time enough for September 2025 -- look for the Bests and the last of the 389s out at the Guilty by Association Truck Show in Joplin, Missouri, then. Also in the podcast, a window on the presentation Rush, Peterbilt's Jason Skoog, and reps from the Wounded Warrior Project, with Sal Gonzalez rounding things out with that moving, terrific song we're happy to be able to share with you. Beth King joined the military to provide for her son and became the first female in her company to fully progress to the role of crew chief. One fateful night in Afghanistan, her Chinook was hit by an RPG, throwing her from the helicopter. Her harness caught her, saving her life, but the incident left her with serious injuries that were not immediately apparent to others.   She went 18 months without treatment, only to later discover that she had suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI). As her symptoms worsened, she was eventually medically discharged from the military.   Her injury, compounded by PTSD, anxiety, and depression, led King to isolate herself. Eventually, the Wounded Warrior Project helped renew her sense of community, reigniting her love of sports and, ultimately, her zest for life. Now, it is King's turn to give back, helping other veterans find a sense of purpose as they return to civilian life.   Find out more about Wounded Warrior Project: https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/   Join the SOFREP Book Club here: https://sofrep.com/book-clubSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
