Send Me a Text MessageHost Tom Butler shares a rundown of where Cycling Over Sixty stands today and how much the show has grown since its beginnings. As part of that update, Tom introduces the Cycling for Active Aging Network, a Pierce County partnership designed to reach adults over 55 who are physically inactive by adapting existing cycling programs to be more welcoming to older adults who are sedentary and maybe have never thought of themselves as cyclists. Then Tom has a conversation with Mark Altman, a military veteran preparing to ride 3,000 miles from Edinburgh to Athens on a recumbent bike with his service dog Juno along for the journey. Mark is using the ride to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project through a Virtual Soldier Ride. It's a conversation about what long days in the saddle can do for a person, and about why, at 61, Mark is choosing to take on something this big.Link to Juno's Odyssey Facebook: facebook.com/search/top?q=juno%27s%20odysseyBecome a member of the Cycling Over Sixty Strava Club! www.strava.com/clubs/CyclingOverSixtyCycling Over Sixty is also on Zwift. Sergio Alfaro, Army Medic and GWOT veteran, in Episode 234 of the Transition Drill Podcast, his experience highlights the importance of preparing for the mental and emotional side of transition, not just the next job or degree, and building support systems early instead of relying on a single post-service plan. Ultimately, his path reinforces that successful transition preparation requires adaptability, self-awareness, and permission to redefine success when the original mission no longer fits.Sergio talks about Iraq, PTSD, and the long road from wanting to become a doctor to rebuilding a life that actually works. If you're a veteran or first responder trying to figure out who you are after the job, this one's for you.Sergio was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Maywood and Burbank, seeing two very different worlds early on. He joined the Army with a long-term plans of becoming a doctor. In the Army, he became a medic, trained and deployed to Iraq in 2003–2004, based in Hamadi, west of Fallujah. He describes the reality of frequent mortar attacks, watching for IED threats, and the kind of moments that never really leave you. He also shares the loss of his commanding officer overseas, and how survivor's guilt and “why him, not me” thinking followed him home. After one enlistment, that turned into four and a half years because of stop-loss, Sergio struggled with trauma, but was hopeful of getting the option for the Army to send him to college to be a doctor. He wanted to keep serving and also go to school, but he ran into the “ask command” reality of the system, and it changed his outlook on staying in. He got out, determined to chase the goal on his own terms. That drive carries him all the way to acceptance at Harvard Medical School, with the GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon support helping make it possible. But also dealing with PTSD, a medical culture not built for that, and a training path that puts him in a VA inpatient psych ward rotation at the worst possible time. Things spiral, and he shares what it's like when your identity is tied to one mission and you feel it slipping away. The second half of this conversation is about what actually helped: support systems, weekly check-ins, and eventually getting connected with Wounded Warrior Project's Warriors to Work, job fairs, resume feedback, and a shift toward a new career path built around what he always loved most, training and teaching others.CONNECT WITH THE PODCAST:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paulpantani/WEBSITE: https://www.transitiondrillpodcast.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulpantani/SIGN-UP FOR THE NEWSLETTER:https://transitiondrillpodcast.com/home#aboutQUESTIONS OR COMMENTS:paul@transitiondrillpodcast.comSPONSORS:GRND CollectiveGet 15% off your purchaseLink: https://thegrndcollective.com/Promo Code: TRANSITION15Blue Line RoastingGet 10% off your purchaseLink: https://bluelineroasting.comPromocode: Transition10Frontline OpticsGet 10% off your purchaseLink: https://frontlineoptics.comPromocode: Transition10
When Navy vets Joe Lloyd and Loaman “Nelly” Nelson served together aboard USS San Diego, they never dreamed they would be attending the Super Bowl. But thanks to the Wounded Warrior Project and Jacksonville Jaguars Devin Lloyd, this weekend, they're living a football fantasy! During Media Week, we swapped sea stories about ship life, port calls, and casinos, and lessons about what it takes to be a true leader. Joe Lloyd shared how those leadership lessons helped him guide his son, Devin Lloyd, to become an elite college football player, a #1 NFL Draft pick, and a Pro-Bowl Linebacker with the Jacksonville Jaguars. They described how, together with Devin, they served their fellow vets at Project Odyssey, a healing retreat that offers outdoor adventures like hiking, biking, rafting, skiing, boarding, and more. Afterward, Devin Lloyd gave the coveted tickets to Nelly, and he described his call to Joe, announcing their epic road trip to San Francisco to attend the big game. Sleep breaks down, pain turns constant, and the mind keeps running like it never got the memo that the mission is over. This conversation follows what it looks like to claw your way back when the body is hurting, the nights are loud, and isolation starts to feel normal. Rowdie McMahon shares her experience as an Air Force nurse deployed to Afghanistan, including the relentless pace and mass casualty reality, and how that pressure followed her home. She opens up about chronic pain, years on heavy medications, and the slow work of tapering off while staying engaged with mental health support. Antonio Bonfiglio, GWOT Iraq combat veteran, in Episode 231 of the Transition Drill Podcast explores transition and identity for veterans and first responders navigating the messy middle between “who I was” and “who I'm becoming.” You'll hear Antonio on combat deployments, what it takes to rebuild your life, and working for the Wounded Warrior Project. The episodes begins by naming a lie he's told himself on repeat: that he's tough. Not tough in the “I can handle anything” way, but tough as a posture, a defense he learned early. He grew up the short, sickly kid in a loud, old school household, always trying to prove he belonged. His family story is its own wild thing too: his dad was 30 years older than his mom, and Antonio grew up with three much older half-siblings who were closer in age to his mom than to him.He was born in New Jersey, raised in South Florida, then got pulled back to New Jersey at 13 and hated it. Hockey was his identity in Florida, and when that fell away, he started chasing status in the wrong places. He talks about a going-away party, getting caught with weed when the cops showed up, and how fast one “stupid decision” can change how your parents see you and what doors stay open.In 2003, he enlists in the Marine Corps on an open contract and ships off to Parris Island. He goes from boot camp to Marine Combat Training to combat engineer school, then hits his first unit in November 2003: 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division. His first deployment is January 2005, was to Fallujah right after Operation Phantom Fury. To the question “where did you grow up,” Antonio often says, “Iraq.” He shares the kind of stories that sound funny until you feel what's underneath them. After the Marines, Antonio runs into the next kind of fight: school, work, relationships, and trying to fit into normal life while still acting like everything's a mission. He talks about using education benefits, clashing with a professor, trying to get hired by the NYPD, and watching his life drift into dead end jobs, partying, gaining weight, and a layoff in the 2009 economic collapse. The throughline isn't perfection. It's the honest look at how a “tough guy” identity can protect you early, then trap you later, until you finally decide to change how you're living.Today he's turned his life around, he's now married and has a couple children. He's been working for the Wounded Warrior Project for the past 6 years, and though he's helping other's who, “raised their right hand” as a physical fitness instructor, he's found his own treatment helping others through their journey. His new passions are sailing and jiu-jitsu, both he found through veteran non-profits.The best podcast for military veterans, police officers, firefighters, and first responders preparing for veteran transition and life after service. Helping you plan and implement strategies to prepare for your transition into civilian life. It's a historic Monday on What's On Your Mind as host Scott Hennen returns from holiday break to a news cycle firing on all cylinders. The episode centers on two earth-shattering headlines: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz's shock announcement that he will not seek a third term, and the breathtaking military-led apprehension of Venezuelan narco-terrorist Nicolas Maduro. Scott and guest host Kevin Flynn dissect Walz's "excuse fest" exit speech, contrasting his rhetoric with the billion-dollar fraud scandals and economic decline currently plaguing Minnesota. The conversation then shifts to the world stage, where Hennen introduces the "Don-Roe Doctrine"—a 2026 twist on the Monroe Doctrine—explaining how Donald Trump's decisive action in Venezuela has sent a "checkmate" message to China, Russia, and Iran. From the "warm collectivism" of New York's new socialist leadership to a world-record bottle rocket launch in Mandan, this episode captures a nation experiencing a massive political and cultural awakening. Standout Moments & Timestamps [00:01:45] – Breaking News: Tim Walz Bows Out Scott reacts in real-time to Governor Tim Walz's announcement that he will not seek re-election, calling it a recognition of his "political fortune circling the drain" amid massive state fraud investigations. Harrison Bernstein is the founder of Soldiers To Sidelines (STS) and has served as executive director since May 2014. STS evolved from a passion project to a burgeoning nonprofit once Harrison resigned from coaching college and professional football to focus 100% on the STS mission. Harrison was able to attract key advisors and officers to help steward the mission. Since 2018, the board has grown to over 21 leaders in the military, sports, and business, and has built a staff of 9 employees. Harrison led his team to develop key partners and sponsors such as USO, Team RWB, Wounded Warrior Project, Women Veterans Alliance, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, the Randy Walker Legacy Foundation and the NFL NY Jets. In fact, he was awarded the NFL Salute To Service Nomination by the NY Jets for the second time this past year. Most recently Harrison authored and published "The Everyday Coach: Harnessing the Magic of Influence." The book is provided free to every STS Soldier Coach and all profits from sales support Soldiers To Sidelines. Harrison also hosts "Harrison Bernstein's Everyday Coach," an accompanying podcast that highlights leadership lessons learned from military heroes, business executives, and coaches to steward the craft of coaching in everyday life. In the past, Harrison has coached football and sports performance for several teams in the NFL, NCAA DIV I, II, and III, and at the high school level. While coaching, Harrison taught in the Master's Program of Exercise Science at George Washington University for seven years. Harrison graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a BA in Economics, was voted captain of the football team, and earned All American honors for three years and Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1997. As the holidays approach, thousands of American service members will be far from home, deployed around the world, standing watch, and ensuring our nation's safety. The USO, nearly marking 85 years, continues to be a bridge. A bridge to home—delivering comfort, connection, and care when it matters most. Now, under the leadership of Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Michael Linnington, the USO is entering a powerful new chapter, one that honors its enduring legacy while reimagining ways to support the people who serve and their families in today's military.Few leaders understand service and sacrifice like Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Michael Linnington. A 35-year U.S. Army veteran, he has spent his life leading soldiers and supporting their families, from the front lines to the Pentagon. After retiring from active duty, he became the first civilian director of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, championing the effort to bring every missing service member home. Later, as CEO of the Wounded Warrior Project, Linnington guided a major transformation that expanded programs and strengthened the nonprofit's impact nationwide. Now, as CEO of the USO, Linnington steps in at a defining moment. In 2026, the USO will celebrate its 85th birthday as America celebrates its 250th, two milestones that highlight a shared legacy of service, resilience, and unity. Linnington's vision is to ensure that wherever service members go, the USO goes with them. From installations and airports to ships at sea and remote deployments around the globe. A Home That Rebuilt a Life” — the story of Army veteran Sean KarpfAfter stepping on an IED in Afghanistan, Army Sergeant Sean Karpf faced years of surgeries, rehab, and the long, slow work of rebuilding a life altered by injury. What changed everything was not a single miracle but a community-backed act of care: Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) built and donated a specially adapted, mortgage-free home designed around Sean's needs — roll-in shower, widened doorways, lowered counters, a 360° outdoor walkway and dozens of other adaptations. The day Sean turned the key and walked into that home with his family, he described it as more than a house: “Homes For Our Troops helped me rebuild my environment. Together, they've given me the foundation to move forward, not just as a veteran, but as a husband, father, and business owner.” WWP News & MediaHFOT's mission is exactly this: build and donate specially adapted, mortgage-free homes to severely injured post-9/11 veterans so they can regain independence and focus on recovery and family. Since 2004 HFOT has delivered hundreds of homes and continues to partner with organizations (like Wounded Warrior Project) and local communities to make these long-term, tangible commitments to veterans and their families. For recipients like Sean, the gratitude is palpable — not just for shelter, but for restored dignity, daily independence, and the practical ability to be present for their loved ones. Bujie – Tour Manager, Production Pro & All-Around Rockstar of HospitalityFrom skate shops to stadiums, Bujie has built an extraordinary life doing what she loves most — taking care of people and keeping the show running no matter what. Known for her tireless work ethic, organization, and infectious positivity, she's spent more than two decades behind the scenes of some of rock's biggest tours and events, making the impossible look easy. Her live event journey began unexpectedly — after years of running successful retail and skate park businesses in Michigan, she volunteered at a local music festival and quickly discovered her knack for advancing shows and managing artists. That led to a full-time career in live production and tour management, working with legends including Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, Deep Purple, Marilyn Manson, and The Guess Who.For nearly a decade, Bujie was a key part of Alice Cooper's touring family, overseeing every detail of hospitality, logistics, and VIP experiences — and even assisting Johnny Depp during Cooper's annual Christmas Pudding charity event in Phoenix. From private planes with holes mid-flight to backstage chaos and heartwarming moments with rock icons, she's seen it all — and handled it all with grace, humor, and a clipboard full of color-coded spreadsheets. When she's not on tour, you'll find her back home in Michigan working at her local metropark (she'll proudly tell you she's obsessed with mowing grass), hiking, or volunteering with charities close to her heart, including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Wounded Warrior Project.“I'm just an ordinary girl with an extraordinary life,” she says — but anyone who's worked with her knows there's nothing ordinary about her drive, heart, and hustle. Her motto? “Always be the hardest worker in the room.”This Episode is brought to you by Lightswitch

Surprise moments should make hearts lift, not race. In this episode, Krisy Thomas, COO of the CWP Society, welcomes Master Certified Wedding Planner and Certified Educator Brianne Ackerland to explore how planners can create high-impact celebrations that honor military guests and anyone living with PTSD or sensory sensitivities—without sacrificing the magic couples dream about. The reality is that surprise cannons, strobes, and smoke machines can trigger panic attacks, flashbacks, and genuine medical emergencies for guests who've served or who live with invisible conditions. Yet most planners don't know when or how to raise these concerns without alarming their couples or killing the celebration vibe. Brianne shares field-tested strategies that balance spectacle with true care, proving you can protect vulnerable guests while still delivering unforgettable moments. We start with timing: why the eight-week planning meeting is the strategic sweet spot to introduce potential triggers—after guest lists are finalized and add-ons are being discussed, but before vendors lock in their plans. Brianne walks you through how to frame the conversation so couples feel supported rather than scared, using thoughtful questions about loud sounds, flashing lights, and smoke effects to shape plans that protect guests while preserving the couple's vision. You'll get a practical toolkit you can implement immediately: how to send private heads-up messages to at-risk guests, create discreet program cues that signal what's coming next, map out quiet zones with clear exit routes, and deliver calm, grounding scripts when emergencies like fire alarms or first responders show up unannounced. We get deeply tactical on vendor communication—briefing DJs on volume limits and strobe alternatives, aligning photographers and videographers on flash frequency and smoke timing, and confirming venue policies for cold sparks and fog machines so surprises don't escalate into crises.Brianne also shares a deeply personal story that reveals why this work matters and how planners can lead with steadiness and compassion when the unexpected happens. This isn't about being the fun police—it's about designing inclusive joy that allows every guest to be fully present. You'll walk away with three immediately actionable steps: ask about accommodations at the eight-week mark, verify venue safety protocols and effect approvals before booking, and establish a designated safe space with a clear exit route and point person. Plus, we spotlight trusted resources like Wounded Warrior Project and NAMI to help you learn the right language and responses when guests need support.Ready to design celebrations where everyone can truly celebrate? MDJ Script/ Top Stories for September 3rd Publish Date: September 3rd Commercial: From the BG Ad Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Wednesday, September 3rd and Happy Birthday to Charlie Sheen I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal 113-home development rezoning request tabled KSU recognized as Military Support College of Distinction Dove hunting this year? Make sure you have completed a hunter education course All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: INGLES 7 STORY 1: 113-home development rezoning request tabled A rezoning request for a 113-home development near I-75 and South Marietta Parkway has been put on hold—at the owner’s request. The plan? Single-family homes and townhomes on 19.5 acres, though the builder, Traton, LLC, flagged some design and engineering tweaks. Kevin Moore, the project’s attorney, said revisions are underway to meet technical requirements and ensure the project’s feasibility. This isn’t the land’s first rodeo. Back in 2021, a 204-townhome proposal for the same area was shot down after community pushback. Will this smaller plan fare better? Time will tell. STORY 2: KSU recognized as Military Support College of Distinction Kennesaw State University has earned the title of Military Support College of Distinction—one of only two schools in Georgia to snag the honor. It’s not just a badge; it’s a nod to KSU’s deep commitment to veterans, service members, and their families. From scholarships that fill funding gaps to partnerships with groups like the Warrior Alliance and Wounded Warrior Project, KSU goes beyond academics. They even host Georgia’s only VetSuccess on Campus counselor, guiding veterans through benefits, careers, and life’s next steps. STORY 3: Dove hunting this year? Make sure you have completed a hunter education course Got your eye on the perfect dove field this season? Before you grab your gear, make sure you’ve checked off one thing: hunter education. The Georgia DNR’s Wildlife Resources Division makes it easy with online and in-person options. Online courses (10 options, one in Spanish) range from free to $49.95, while in-person classes are free. Born after Jan. 1, 1961? You’ll need this. Details at GeorgiaWildlife.com. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: Ingles 7 STORY 4: Cobb District Attorney’s Office launches Victim Advocates Academy Last month, District Attorney Sonya Allen’s office kicked off its first-ever Victim Advocates’ Academy—a five-session program aimed at giving advocates the tools, knowledge, and trauma-informed practices they need to better support crime victims. The next session? Thursday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cobb Public Safety Training Center in Austell. This one dives into post-conviction advocacy, including the Pardon & Parole process, with statewide resources shared by the Office of Victim Services. STORY 5: UPDATE: Fire destroys east Cobb restaurant An overnight fire gutted Chin Chin Chinese Restaurant, a beloved east Cobb spot that had been part of the community for 30 years. Owner Jasmine Chen, heartbroken, said the flames consumed everything. “I locked up around 10:15 p.m.,” Chen said. “By morning, it was gone.” A friend, who didn’t want to be named, said the fire likely started in the kitchen around 12:30 a.m. and spread fast. Chen, who’s owned the restaurant for 15 years, said, “Everyone knows Chin Chin. East Cobb has been so good to us.” Now, she waits for the insurance investigation. Break: STORY 6: Waterfowl Hunters: Early Teal and Goose season opportunities Duck, duck…goose season’s almost here, y’all! Georgia hunters, it’s time to gear up for early teal and Canada goose season. Mark your calendars: goose season runs Sept. 6-28, 2025 (daily limit: five), and teal season is Sept. 13-21, 2025 (daily limit: six). Looking for a spot? Check out WMAs open for small game, or hit lakes like Juliette and Clarks Hill. Don’t forget your licenses and stamps—grab ’em at GoOutdoorsGeorgia.com. STORY 7: $3.3M roundabout project proposed at Powder Springs intersection Powder Springs and GDOT want your thoughts on a $3.3 million roundabout project at Austell-Powder Springs Road and Marietta Street. Right now, it’s just a traffic light and two lanes—but the plan? A four-exit roundabout, 6-foot sidewalks, and 10-foot bike paths connecting to the Silver Comet Trail. Why the change? Between 2020 and 2024, 69 crashes happened there—most right in the intersection. GDOT says the roundabout could cut injury crashes by 78%. Got opinions? Share them by Friday online, by mail, or email. Questions? Call the city or GDOT. Your voice could shape the final design—or stop it altogether. We’ll have closing comments after this. We tend to gloss over the intention behind Memorial Day each year as we prep for a long weekend full of good food, games, and time at the beach. But to be clear: We wouldn't be able to enjoy any of those things without others' sacrifices. To keep this truth top of mind as we approach the holiday weekend, Darlene Brock and Julie Bender walk through the history of the national holiday and share the startling numbers of those lost in recent wars. There is a depth and gravity to the topic that's worthy of honor and remembrance, including the first recorded Memorial Day celebration in which former slaves from Charleston, South Carolina, gathered to honor the Union soldiers lost during the war in 1865. If you've felt removed from the reason for Memorial Day, we urge you to take a listen to this short but meaningful podcast episode. Quote of the episode: “We should honor and remember the sacrifice of those who have [answered the call to go off and fight a war], and even immensely more those who have given their lives on the battlefield.”—Julie Bender Resources Related Learn more about how the Wounded Warrior Project honor and supports veterans Mentioned Read more about the first recorded Memorial Day celebration here Check out the Smart Living book series here!
