Over 20 million copies of one of the most famous memoirs of all-time, “Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson” written by Mitch Albom, have been sold since its 1997 publication, and to this day it remains on many a college's required reading list. Twenty-eight years after Morrie Schwartz passed away, his son Rob Schwartz, has edited his father's last work, and posthumously published what has become a bestselling new book, “The Wisdom of Morrie: Living and Aging Creatively and Joyfully.” Rob is a journalist and entrepreneur, having founded a number of companies, both in Japan and the US, and held executive positions in others. He's produced numerous film and music projects with international teams. His areas of expertise include the entertainment industries in Asia, the US, and Europe. His projects often have a special emphasis on music, film, online business development, and developing musical artists' careers, as well as working for Billboard in Asia. He has appeared on Good Morning America, Nightline, PBS NewsHour, NBC10 Boston, and in WebMD, Psychology Today, Reader's Digest, and People magazine. Rob is currently one of the producers of Onetopia, a benefit music festival. I asked Rob what it was like growing-up in the in the Schwartz household along with his work and background, and what took him to Asia and his work there as a founder, journalist, and in production. The book's been described as a profound, poetic, and poignant masterpiece of living and aging joyfully and creatively, but he first starts off examining ageism and explaining how poisonous it is and how wrong it is. In his reflections he confronts the false notion that people are somehow made less by the aging process, and his coining the term “age casting,” as an aspect of ageism and diminishing a person's value solely based on their age. We wrapped-up our conversation with him sharing a bit about his efforts in producing a global benefit festival dedicated to mental health and has a playlist on Spotify. He's also working on the development of Holocaust survivors' story as a documentary as well. Rob's perspectives, work and life serve as an inspiration to us all to live our lives in full.
Rob Schwartz joins me on the podcast to talk about his time in Asia covering music and writing for Billboard. He also discusses the book he edited, The Wisdom of Morrie: Living and Aging Creatively and Joyfully by his late father Morrie Schwartz (beloved subject of Tuesdays with Morrie). We also spend some time talking about a benefit concert he is producing called One Topia (onetopia.com) the first ever global benefit festival dedicated to Mental Health. Mitch Albom wrote the first book. Rob Schwartz lived the reality. What reality? Morrie Schwartz… you know, Tuesdays With Morrie, was Rob's dad. Almost thirty years after his dad died, Rob has released a book: The Wisdom of Morrie: Living and Aging Creatively and Joyfully – manuscripts he found in his dad's desk years after Morrie had passed. I ask Rob about his dad, Morrie and also about his Mom, Charlotte. I love the warmth and pride in his voice when he speaks of them. He gets emotional at one point – it's such emphasis that love does last forever, even if the body is gone. Rob and I discuss Morrie's advice for living a long and happy life, the concept of ‘tension of opposites'… and if you're thinking those subjects sound a little esoteric, let me assure you, he is his father's son and Rob keeps the conversation real, and in the present. I think you'll find the “personal question” part of this conversation really interesting! Last month, I stopped by a Barnes & Noble store and found myself face-to-face with a book: “The Wisdom of Morrie.” You might recall Mitch Albom's heartwarming novel, “Tuesdays With Morrie.” Well, this time, the newly released book was authored by Morrie himself and edited by his son Rob Schwartz. I'm thrilled to introduce you to Rob today. A writer, producer, and entrepreneur, Rob Schwartz's journey has taken him from the pages of prestigious publications like Time, Newsweek, and Variety to the creative landscapes of script editing and film production. Today, he serves as a partner in the innovative virtual concert platform, Moshpit, and is a producer of the upcoming mental health benefit festival, Onetopia. In this episode, we'll delve into life's profound questions, as Rob shares his journey of uncovering his father's manuscript. We explore how its contents not only led him to confront his own grief, but also provided deeper insights into his father's perspective on embracing joy, seeking laughter, and infusing creativity into every facet of life. Tuesdays With Morrie is the bestselling memoir of all time. Rob Schwartz, Morrie's son, discovered an unpublished manuscript in his father's desk drawer years after his death. Rob recently published this incredible book, The Wisdom of Morrie, and he joins the Good Mood Show this week to discuss the deep wisdom of his father. Learn how to live fully in the present moment and appreciate the beauty of life. Rob teaches us about forgiveness, compassion, and strengthening relationships. When we have strong relationships with others who love and support us, it fulfills us at a deep level. It brings meaning and purpose to our lives, and it improves our wellbeing and happiness. You will come away from this episode with a greater understanding and appreciation for what it means to be human. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: The importance of strengthening human relationships How to appreciate the beauty of life What it means to stay human Why the most beautiful time in life is now [07:14] The Importance of Strengthening Human Relationships When we have strong relationships with others who love and support us, it fulfills us at a deep level. It brings meaning and purpose to our lives, and it improves our wellbeing and happiness. Our relationships provide opportunities for growth, as we learn how to be more empathetic, compassionate, and understanding of others. As Morrie Schwartz said, "Love is how you stay alive even after you're gone." The impact we have on others through strong relationships can continue long after we're gone. [13:50] What It Means to Stay Human To stay human means to stay true to the qualities that make us distinctly human - our capacity for love, compassion, empathy, creativity, and spirituality. It means relating to others in a genuine, authentic way and connecting deeply with their humanity. It means appreciating beauty, art, and joy. It means living in accordance with higher human values like kindness, honesty and integrity. In essence, to stay human is to avoid becoming hardened, cynical or indifferent. It is to remain open-hearted, thoughtful, and connected to others and to the world around us. [16:51] The Most Beautiful Time in Life is Now Now is the most beautiful time in life because it is the only time we truly have to experience life fully. The past is gone and the future is uncertain, so all we really have is this present moment. When we live fully in the now, we develop a greater appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us. As we age and gain wisdom, we realize how precious each moment is. Understanding our own impermanence and mortality makes us value our time while we are still alive. Living in the present allows us to have more meaningful connections and be fully present with the people we love right now. Now is the only time we can act with purpose and express our values. So in essence, now is the most beautiful time in life because it is the only time we have to truly live, love, experience joy, and appreciate the gift of being alive. Notable quotes: [16:51] It's always now. The past and the future don't exist. So the most beautiful time in life has to be now because it's the only time. About the Guest Rob Schwartz is the son of Morrie Schwartz, the beloved subject of the bestselling memoir Tuesdays with Morrie. After rediscovering his father's unpublished manuscript The Wisdom of Morrie in his desk drawer years after his death, Rob worked to get the book published. The Wisdom of Morrie was released in 2019 and shares Morrie Schwartz's wisdom on aging gracefully, living joyously, and strengthening human relationships.
Todays guest is Rob Schwartz. You may not know him, but you've likely heard of his dad, Morrie. Bestseller, “Tuesdays with Morrie,” sold over 18 million copies after it was released in 1997. While Morrie, a beloved dad and professor at Brandeis University, was dying of ALS, Mitch Albom, one of his students, sat down to interview him every Tuesday for 12 weeks. This became a treasure trove of his philosophy as his health declined. It was very early in our understanding of ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. Several years after “Tuesdays with Morrie," and the death of his father, Rob, found an almost finished manuscript in his dad's desk drawer. He decided to edit this book as a tribute to his dad. Now, “The Wisdom of Morrie," recently released, is a new look at Morries' life wisdom and lessons. I was happy to be reminded of the spirit and light that filled his life, despite that he was dying. A reminder from Morrie: “Dying is only one thing to be upset about; living an unhappy life is something else.” Show Notes: Morrie is known for his positive attitude and growth mindset before and after he was diagnosed with ALS. He was an extremely curious, compassionate and intelligent man. He always had this intense empathy for everybody, and was open to different worldviews. He was aware of others' difficulties and their pain. Once you're open to somebody else's worldview and perspective, he said, you're going to see things in a different light. The Wisdom of Morrie is really about lessons on how to live your best life and how to live with the tension or paradox of joy and sorrow. His attitude was…”I'm gonna live the best that I can in the time that I have left. And that means I have to put bitterness, anger and disappointment aside and concentrate on what gives me joy and life and pushes me forward.” Morrie wrote a bit about ageism. He has a term called age casting, which is to make assumptions about older people just because they're old. He also includes many practical tips on how to live more creatively and joyously as you age. Very simply put, what gives your life meaning, Morrie would say, is your relationship with other people. Morrie viewed aging as completely natural; Not something to be angry or despairing about, but something to understand as a natural process of life, and that you should appreciate what is strong and good about it, as opposed to trying to pick out, oh, my body isn't as strong as it used to be. There will always be the tension of opposites in our lives. This idea of balancing out hope and despair. In this book, Morrie was attempting to remove the stumbling blocks that prevent people from being happy and fulfilled. He believed that laughter was incredibly important and wondered why elderly people often forget to incorporate more humor in their lives. Don't let it slip away, he reminds us. Rob's most important lesson from his dad? Pay attention to your relationships and continue to strengthen them always. Resources: The Wisdom of Morrie. Available at all booksellers.
America was introduced to Morrie Schwartz nearly 30 years ago when he spoke with Ted Koppel about his battle with ALS, sharing his unflinching and thoughtful reflections on dying. In the years after Schwartz's death, his son found a manuscript. Rob Schwartz edited his father's words into "The Wisdom of Morrie: Living and Aging Creatively and Joyfully." He discussed the new book with Geoff Bennett. PBS NewsHour is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders
On today's episode of the Tuesday People Podcast we are delighted to have Morrie's son, Rob Schwartz, join us to talk about the newly released book, "The Wisdom of Morrie," written by Morrie Schwartz prior to his ALS diagnosis, and edited by Rob. In the book, Morrie asks the questions, "Who am I really? What have I done? What is important and meaningful to me? What difference does it make that I have lived? What does it mean to be truly human, and where am I on that scale?" Morrie explores these questions and many more in this profound, poetic, and poignant masterpiece of living and aging joyfully and creatively. Later life can be filled with many challenges, but it can also be one of the most beautiful and rewarding passages in anyone's lifetime. More information on "The Wisdom of Morrie" can be found here.
