From child actor to Disney star to pop icon dubbed "Lesbian Jesus," Hayley Kiyoko built a career creating the representation she never had as a half-Japanese, queer artist. In this episode of She Pivots, Hayley opens up about becoming a community's symbol practically overnight while still figuring herself out, and how she moved from leading with fear to leading with confidence and self-love. She also shares how she found her fiancée, Becca Tilley, and reflects on the decade-long journey that culminated in her Girls Like Girls film and album—a project that started with high school heartbreak twenty years ago. Dr. Sian Proctor grew up the daughter of a NASA hidden figure, with the stars in her sights until a pair of glasses at age fourteen seemed to close the door on her dream of becoming a military aviator. She kept reaching anyway, pursuing a career in geoscience and science communication, coming agonizingly close to NASA selection before receiving a rejection that sent her life in a different direction. In this episode, Dr. Sian Proctor talks about the long, winding road from that childhood dream to becoming the first Black woman to pilot a spacecraft; hitting a low point after a painful divorce; and the unexpected creative awakening that ultimately launched her to space. From the time she was a little girl, Hayley Paige knew exactly what she wanted to do: design wedding dresses. And she did it. By her early thirties she had a million Instagram followers, a recurring spot on Say Yes to the Dress, and gowns selling in hundreds of stores worldwide. And then she lost all of it. Her name. Her Instagram. Her right to design. Even her right to publicly call herself Hayley Paige. What followed was years of fighting in court, broke, locked out of everything she had built, just to reclaim what should have been hers from the start. And when she finally did, she turned that experience into something bigger, founding A Girl You Might Know Foundation and She Is Cheval to make sure other women don't have to go through the same thing. Heela Yang built Sol de Janeiro, one of the most beloved body care brands, from her dining room, but her path there looked nothing like a typical business plan. After twelve years in corporate beauty following stints at Goldman Sachs and a Harvard MBA, she left New York for Brazil for love, only to find herself pregnant, isolated, and unable to do the work that had always defined her. A single afternoon on a beach, surrounded by women of every shape in a very small bikini she'd been talked into, changed everything. In this episode, Heela shares how that moment became the emotional blueprint for Sol de Janeiro, the cult-favorite brand that launched a craze for mists and body care and built a business around embracing your body and skin as it is, no matter what size or shape. Victoria Lai has lived several careers in one lifetime: presidential appointee at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, entrepreneur, and now business advisor and nonprofit COO. But her biggest pivot came when she nurtured her passion for making ice cream on nights and weekends while working a serious government job. In this extra sweet episode, Victoria walks us through how a $25 Craigslist ice cream maker and a promise to herself led to Ice Cream Jubilee, the award-winning DC-area business celebrated by Food & Wine, the Washington Post, and Thrillist, and what it felt like to eventually sell the business she'd spent nearly a decade building. She also opens up about her family's Chinese immigrant history and how it shaped both her flavors and her sense of purpose, and why she considers her latest pivot back to mission-driven work the most fitting chapter yet. In June 2002, fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart was taken from her bedroom at knifepoint and held captive for nine months, enduring abuse that would have broken most people beyond repair. Against extraordinary odds, she survived, and then she decided to step fully into the public eye; not in spite of what happened to her, but because of it. She has testified before Congress, helped author a Department of Justice handbook for kidnapping survivors, and founded the Elizabeth Smart Foundation to dismantle the shame culture that compounds survivors' trauma. In this powerful episode, Elizabeth walks us through the night that changed everything, how she held onto hope during nine months of captivity, what justice looked and felt like after nearly eight years of waiting, and why she believes that being seen is one of the most radical things a survivor can do. In this episode of Never Perfect, Dr. Beth sits down with Brad Walsh—best-selling author and host of the top-rated podcast Empowerography—to explore how purpose often unfolds in unexpected ways. Together, they discuss how childhood experiences, life's challenges, and career detours can merge to reveal a calling later in life. At age 50, Brad Walsh felt like he had won the lottery when the winding roads of his life finally converged at one powerful intersection—his life's purpose. As a young boy, Brad was deeply inspired by the strength, sacrifice, and resilience of the two women who shaped his heart and worldview: his mother and grandmother. Their influence stayed with him throughout his life, even as his career took many unexpected turns. Brad began as a photographer focused on landscapes and architecture, traveling extensively for work before eventually landing in the corporate world. But a seemingly simple assignment—taking professional headshots—changed everything. Through the lens of his camera, Brad began connecting with women one-on-one, hearing their stories and witnessing their vulnerability, courage, and beauty. He often describes this experience as being allowed to “sit in the passenger seat” of their lives. Those conversations sparked something deeper within him: a calling to help women see their strength, worth, and voice. Then the COVID pandemic arrived, bringing the kind of pause many people faced. Brad realized he had two choices: complain and shut down, or use the unexpected gift of time to build something meaningful. He chose the second path. During that time, he launched into podcasting, writing, and speaking—creating platforms that elevate and amplify women's voices, stories, and gifts. Brad's story powerfully normalizes something many people feel anxious about: purpose doesn't always show up early. Sometimes it takes decades of living, learning, and listening before the pieces finally come together. In this episode, you'll learn: Why finding your purpose later in life can still mean you're exactly on time How to move through fear, comparison, and perfectionism The importance of being seen—and why women's voices deserve amplification Why self-care isn't selfish, but essential for mental well-being How celebrating small wins can create powerful momentum If you've been waiting until you feel ready, fearless, or “good enough,” this episode is your reminder: You don't need perfect conditions to begin. Start small. Start scared. Start messy. Just start. Because what's meant for you won't pass you—but you do have to show up for it. I thought I was the only one.” [C.S. Lewis] And now that I know I'm not alone I, too, can summon the courage to get myself from Here to There.Story Prompt: When have you given yourself permission to tell yourself about how you overcame hardship? They highlight the importance of preserving function and quality of life in menopausal women and the need for a shift in the conversation around hormones from disease prevention to preservation of function. The speakers also discuss the international perspective on menopause and the challenges women face in accessing hormone therapy in different countries. Takeaways The lack of information and inconsistent advice from doctors led Monica and Anne to start Alloy. This platform provides women with credible information, support, and access to hormone replacement therapy. Validation and listening to women's concerns are crucial in menopause care, as many women have been dismissed or invalidated by healthcare providers. The barriers to accessing testosterone for women include its classification as a schedule three drug, the lack of FDA-approved dose for women, and the need for in-person prescriptions by knowledgeable practitioners. The stigma around menopause needs to be challenged, as it is a powerful time in a woman's life where she can take control and live life on her own terms. The telehealth technology and behavior changes during the COVID-19 pandemic have created an opportunity for improved access to menopause care. Alloy is focused on creating solutions for the problems women face in perimenopause and menopause, including addressing vaginal health, systemic hormones, and skincare. The safety and efficacy of hormones, including testosterone, need to be emphasized to overcome misconceptions and provide women with the full range of benefits. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a safe and effective treatment for menopause symptoms and can have protective effects on the heart, bones, and brain. The fear and misinformation surrounding HRT are unfounded, and women should have access to this treatment to improve their quality of life. The conversation around hormones should shift from disease prevention to preservation of function and quality of life in menopausal women. Access to hormone therapy is a challenge in many countries, and there is a need to spread awareness and improve access to treatment internationally. https://www.myalloy.com/ https://www.instagram.com/monica.molenaar/ https://www.instagram.com/annefulenwider/ Special thanks to our sponsor, SOLV! In the latest episode of the Simply Fit Podcast I have the pleasure of speaking with Elly Young. Elly is an alcohol free life coach who focuses on helping women rebalance their hormones. Elly found herself in the common trap that most middle aged women do… Using drink as a reward at the end of the day, feeling constantly sleep deprived and having mental health challenges, all of which she thought was part of the process as a middle aged woman with children. After a failed attempt at Dry January, Elly knew that she couldn't go on this way and committed to turning her life around and embracing the next decade of her life, not enduring it. In this episode you can expect to learn… What is ‘grey area drinking' and why it's likely where you are at the moment. How to not replace your drinking habits with eating habits. Along with how you can start to get your hormones to work with you, not against you as you enter the middle stages of your life. So without further ado, Elly Young. According to AARP over 44% of Americans ages 40-59 are considered obese, and for adults over 60 that number is around 42%. Hormone changes can cause fat accumulation, especially in our midsections, and that collides with age-related muscle loss, which means our bodies don't burn calories or process sugar as efficiently. Then, of course, comes the expected cascade of possible health complications associated with the extra weight. I don't want this to sound bleak, and the purpose in me sharing these statistics is to say that we CAN change the narrative. It is possible, and it is never too late. When Joan MacDonald received some unwelcome health news from her doctor, she knew that she had to make some changes. With guidance from her fitness guru daughter, Michelle MacDonald, Joan began her own health and fitness journey, in her seventies, to go on to inspire many others to do the same through her Train With Joan platform. Not only are grateful women re-discovering themselves and getting their lives back, but they are becoming a part of a greater community of support and friendship.Joan has become a major fitness influencer with almost 2 million followers on social media, and she has authored her memoir and self-help book, Flex Your Age: Defy Stereotypes and Reclaim Empowerment. Oh, and did I mention Joan Macdonald was on the cover of Women's Health magazine in 2023?
