Anyone can be famous. Not everyone can wait a lifetime. From hammering it with the ‘gods of rock' to heroin diaries, white line fevers and the inevitable ghost written My Story, it would seem that every gnarled old pop star has had a crack at the rock and roll memoir. Wrong-side-of-the-tracks childhood? Check. Abusive stepdad? Check. Salvation with the band followed by booze, sex, acrimonious rows, near death experiences, sobriety and, eventually, religion. Yeah, I think we get the picture. But what about rock's also rans? The no hopers. The ones who never even got as far as a record deal. Shouldn't these less-feted performers with their doomed musical adventures and dashed hopes of super stardom be allowed to tell their tale too? So here's a real rock memoir. An honest, warts and all portrayal of what it's like to fall in love with music and start your own teenage band (or indeed several bands) spanning the eras of glam, punk, new wave and 80s pop, right up to the so-called ‘second summer of love' in 1988. Whatever happened to the teenage dream? Find out by joining guitarist and songwriter Dan with his band Stranger Than Paradise as they chart their rise to the top alongside a cast of outrageous characters and oh, so many disapproving grown-ups. Get ready for a no holds barred, tragi-comic ride through the euphoric triumphs and near misses of raw creativity and joyous music making.
Sample Of Postcards From The Edge By Carrie Fisher

“It twirrrrrrled up!” Back in 1990, Mike Nichols' “Postcards from the Edge” also twirled up some big box office. Meryl Streep and Shirley Maclaine laughed, cried, and sang their way to critical and audience acclaim, thanks Carrie Fisher's acerbic script, loosely based on Fisher's life and best-selling novel. But these days, how much sympathy can we truly “twirl up” for these privileged, fictious, and moneyed movie stars? Do we still buy Ms. Meryl as a recovering pill-popping drug addict? Would we have fallen for Dennis Quaid's pickup lines? The Old Roommates grab their middle-aged ammo (don't worry, they're blanks) and give this LA story a rewatch through their middle-aged lens. The theme of this week: nobody moved. We finally get a death we've been waiting for, but we can barely appreciate it because we're so tired of the character. And speaking of tired, one of our main conflicts this week is a tired fight club trope - oh brother. Elsewhere, Bonnie, Nora, and Mary louise search for Rayna Cruz (the huntress we've been hearing so much about) but find a seemingly sweet old lady. Also there: Enzo, now working for a mysterious organization. Also, Caroline's babies are siphons hungry for vampire magic, causing a teeny weeny desiccation problem. Finally, Matt tells Penny about vampires - I guess he needs a girlfriend too. Remember to rate, review, and share, brothers! EPISODE 17 - “It's All About Character (Female)” - 01/08/2024 In the film Mildred Pierce (1945), EVE ARDEN manages to steal almost every scene she's in. And, while talking with JOAN CRAWFORD's Mildred about her spoiled, bratty daughter, Veda (ANN BLYTH), she even delivers the film's most iconic line, “Personally, Veda's convinced me that alligators have the right idea. They eat their young.” That is the power of a skilled character actress. Their scenes might be limited, and their names may not be above the title, but with the lift of an eyebrow, the purse of a lip, or the widening of their eyes, they can pull focus and make you forget all about the stars. In this week's episode, we discuss the illustrious careers and lives of some of the finest character actresses to ever work in film. Shirley MacLaine screams.
I did not lift my skirt, It TWIRLED Up! You only remember the bad stuff don't you?” We watched “Postcards from the Edge” with Friend of the Pod Joshua Clement and we could use a stiff drink. From the novel of the same name by Queen Carrie Fisher, this semi-autobiographical film tackles the drug and alcohol use of struggling actress Suzanne Vale (Meryl Streep) and her recovery via her actress mother from the Golden Age of Hollywood, Doris Mann (Shirley MacLaine). It was never a secret that these roles are thinly veiled allusions to their real life counterparts Carrie and her larger than life mother - the incomparable Debbie Reynolds. In a ultra-meta version of life imitating art, Miss Reynolds herself is said to have lobbied for the role of Doris Mann, but was told by director Mike Nichols she wasn't “right for the part.” Iconic. Meryl Streep is wonderful as always as the ever-on-edge Suzanne but for our money, the stand-out here is really Shirley MacLaine. Give us the full length Doris Mann movie! This cast is so packed with heavy hitting cameos we can barely count (Gene Hackman, Richard Dreyfus, Rob Reiner) but the supporting cast is pretty stellar. Annette Bening as a horny day player is super charming and Dennis Quaid as the philandering producer… I mean Dennis Quaid's abs in 1990 generate enough sexual energy to power a small nation. If you weren't already aware of Carrie Fisher's prowess as a writer, watch this movie. The sheer amount of sarcasm and wit packed into 100 minutes is a hint of the talent hiding in a teeny space princess. “What if you had a mother like Joan Crawford or Lana Turner? These are the options? You, Joan or Lana?” Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

Carrie Fisher once dropped acid in the desert with Paul Simon. She did ayahuasca in the Amazon jungle, where she was attacked by a giant snake that may or may not have been real. She did so much cocaine that legendary partyman John Belushi told her to ease up. Her mood swings were such a dramatic part of her personality that she gave them their own names. And her personality was so galvanizing that it became an avatar for real-life resistance fighters. To see the complete list of contributors, visit disgracelandpod.com/badlands. STREEPS OF FIRE: THE RIVER WILD (1994) WITH BLOOD AND POPCORN'S ERIK! Following Streep's break from heavy roles after 1988's A CRY IN THE DARK, 4 out of 5 of Streep's next movies were sharp-ish turns to comedy (SHE-DEVIL, POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE, DEFENDING YOUR LIFE & DEATH BECOMES HER), with one prestige drama (THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS) before she decided it was time for becoming an... action hero? We are still in the midst of Streep's most fascinating period (she would next romance Clint Eastwood in the brilliant BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY). Curtis Hanson (director of LA CONFIDENTIAL) was a master of the mid-budget studio thriller at the time of The River Wild. Once Streep was on board with Hanson, a crack cast around her quickly followed (Kevin Bacon, John C. Reilly, David Strathairn, that one kid from Jurassic Park, a heroic dog, and Benjamin Bratt). It all makes for a relatively satisfying early 90s mid-budget studio thriller about a couple of convicts taking a river guide (Streep) and her family hostage on a river-bound getaway through some gnarly rapids she has a deadly history with. It IS a ridiculous premise but Hanson, to his credit, along with Streep giving more than a script like this deserves, make it work. The River Wild was filmed in a few different location but most of the sedate or passable rapid river scenes were shot in Southern Oregon on the wild and scenic portion of the Rogue River. Co-host Ken and special guest Erik (of the pod Blood and Popcorn) lived in the area at the time and discuss both the river and working at a movie theater when the film was being made AND having most of the stars come through at one point or another. It is always a peculiar thing when Hollywood invades a small town. There is also a quiz about the movie! Usually we do two movies in an episode but we didn't have any Streep-as-action-hero movies to pair this with. We all eagerly await Streep to show up as Commander Azmatron Eleven (first introduced in the classic Kree-Skrull War, Avengers Annual #6 to be exact) in the MCU so she can be in another action movie and we can have a Streep action figure!*THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096*there is no such character and we all pray Streep never steps into a green closet to shoot a cameo in a shitty superhero movie, It would tarnish her crown
STREEPS OF FIRE: STILL OF THE NIGHT and A CRY IN THE DARK/EVIL ANGELS Join Ken, Jack, Thomas and Andi for two very important pieces in the Streep mosaic.Streep in the 1980s was a marvel of A-list perfection, starring in drama after drama, garnering awards like crazy and generally gathering a reputation as a highbrow accent technician. This week we start with the last movie Streep made before ascending to the A-list as the finest actress of her generation, 1982's STILL OF THE NIGHT, which came out months before SOPHIE'S CHOICE. Reuniting with Robert Benton, who directed Streep to her first Oscar in Kramer vs. Kramer, Night is a clear Hitchcock pastiche/homage with Roy Scheider as a shrink who gets in over his head with the mistress of a dead patient, played by Streep, who may be a murder. As we learn in the episode, Streep was not a fan of the genre or the movie itself, doing it mostly on the fumes of her wonderful experience on Kramer (even replicating getting to write her character's monologue late in the film, like her courtroom speech in Kramer). After Sophie's Choice Streep would star in a string of dramas, until...1988's A CRY IN THE DARK/EVIL ANGELS, the infamous Australian true story of a woman who claimed a dingo ate her baby and started off a public and social firestorm that still resonates today. This is a fine movie and a bookend with Still of the Night as Streep would purposely go on after this to broaden her reputation with comedies and, years later, even action movies. It's not that Dark's failure at the box office (not because it isn't good) but she was in a rut and becoming typecast in somber dramas. The next 4 years would see her in She-Devil, Postcards From The Edge, Defending Your Life and Death Becomes Her, a string of very purposeful comedies (of varying degrees of success). Streep's turn from A-list Drama Lady to comedienne after A Cry in the Dark was remarkable at the time and still is today. Streep knew what she needed and went for it. Note: Wed do explain the two titles for this film in the podcast. 4X4 MIKE NICHOLS PT. 2 OF 4: MEDIOCRE, SHE WROTE HEART BURN & POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson playing fictional versions of Nora Ephorn and Carl Bernstein, written by one of the funniest women on the planet at the time? Directed by Nichols? SIGN US UP, right? Gosh, there is a lot to unpack on this episode. HEART BURN (1986) When Mike Nichols collaborated with Ephron to adapt her thinly-veiled bombshell of a memoir about her marriage and divorce from Carl Bernstein, it seemed like a perfect match! The urbane and witty Nichols paired with the urbane and witty Ephron. It could not miss! But it kinda does. Why? We go over a lot of the issues plaguing this production as it made its way to screen. Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine playing fictional versions of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds? In a zippy Hollywood comedy about substance abuse directed by Nichols, written by one of the funniest women on numerous planets at the time,? Made at the dazed hangover end of Hollywood's legendary cocaine-period of the 1980s? SIGN US UP, right? Please see the Heart Burn paragraph and and replace "Nora" and "Ephron" with "Carrie" and "Fisher" and you may notice a theme, when we talk POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE (1990). Why Nichols elected to focus on a nearly-nonexistent plot in Fisher's memoir is a mystery we try to unravel as much of her brilliant book is simply not in the movie. Everything theoretical about these movies is fantastic, making them seem, on paper, as must-see productions. So what goes wrong? We are joined by saucy songstress Andi again to once again investigate. We're back with another movie that isn't a musical but should be one, and with a lot of brainstorming with guest Aaron Salazar, Jon justifies this episode - for the stage adaptation that may or may not be happening. Who knows? But Aaron chose right, and this movie needs some love. Plus it has two titans acting against each other!Jay & A Are Gay: https://www.liinks.co/jayanda_aregay4FS Podcast: linktr.ee/4fs_podcast4FS Podcast Instagram: @4fs_podcastDrama - An Aural Experience Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/drama-an-aural-experience/id1533007915Podcast Socials -Email: butasongpod@gmail.comInstagram: @butasongpodTwitter: @butasongpodFacebook: @butasongpodNext episode: Documentary Now - "Original Cast Album: Co-Op"!
On the bonus episode of THE THIRD ACT PODCAST the crew are fish on the line flopping around in the back of the boat. With some absent cohosts, Christian calls on Robert Gassaway (of The Flicksation Podcast) to finally watch some movies from decades past that we remember the VHS boxes from in a new segment - Don't Judge a Film by It's Cover. First film is de Palma's stylish Hitchcock riff, BODY DOUBLE. Then we talk about the only credited screenplay by Carrie Fisher for Mike Nichols', POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE. We sneak in a quick TV Corner segment at the top as well gabbing about The Rehearsal, Better Call Saul, and Barry. We also discuss music videos, blanks, and Sam Rockwell's character from Charlie's Angels. Keep in touch with us on Facebook and Twitter and email us anytime at: TheThirdActPodcast@gmail.com
A mother and daughter film sounded very appropriate for this week's episode of "Mom's Movie Night Podcast," and my mom and I delivered with this dramedy starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine, called "Postcards from the Edge." This film was written by Carrie Fisher; whom most know as Princess Leia from Star Wars, and it is somewhat of a personal memoir of her life and relationship with her real mother, Debbie Reynolds.
Our hosts answer your questions and reveal more surprising details from the cutting room floor. ------- 'Father Wants Us Dead' is a serial investigative true crime podcast from NJ.com and The Star-Ledger about John List, the accountant and Sunday school teacher who killed his mother, wife and three kids in their Westfield, New Jersey mansion 50 years ago. John List left behind a confession letter, explaining why what he'd done was right, and disappeared to start a whole new life, eluding authorities for nearly two decades. The loss of those innocent lives, the horror and the fear, forever scarred this quiet New Jersey community. Whether or not someone you're friends with chooses to be in a relationship, get married, have children, or chooses the opposite, or is happy/unhappy with whatever the current state of their life is...it shouldn't have any affect on whether or not you can relate, be supportive, and be there for them.Follow Us on Instagram and Twitter: @gossipthatsgoodforyou (Molly: @wowmollysmithwow and Deniz: @denizkofteci)Subscribe to our Patreon for bonus episodes and more juicy gossip we can't share on the regular feed.If you have a question or feedback email us at gossipthatsgoodforyou@gmail.comLINKS MENTIONED:PK Kemsley of RHOBH Finally Pays Off $2 Million Debt To Las Vegas Casino After Nearly 10 YearsTaylor Swift supports her boyfriend Joe Alwyn's new Hulu series Conversations With Friends: 'Can confirm it's phenomenal'Postcards from the EdgeDead End PodcastBéis TravelTend Skin Solution See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

For May we're celebrating mothers in film! There are SO many great films out there, and we're starting with a superb treatment of Carrie Fisher's eponymous autobiography Postcards from the Edge. The chemistry between Meryl Streep and Shirley MacClean truly captures the essence of Carrie Fisher's competitive yet ride or die relationship with her mother Debbie Reynolds. Carrie also wrote the screenplay, and I know if she's watching from above (may she rest in peace) she will enjoy our valentine to this fantastic and re-watchable film. Please join us as we discuss the film and also wax philosophic about mother/daughter relationships.

Fametracker's own Adam Sternbergh (oh, also the New York Times's but whatever)(hee) is back to discuss The Equalizer, the perfectly acceptable re-imagining of the '80s classic. Whom on the panel did the new verzh win over with casting coups, origami tradecraft, and similarities to Leverage and Blindspot? Who called it the three-camera sitcom of cop shows? And is anyone setting their DVR to watch more of it? We went Around The Dial with Framing Britney Spears, Married At First Sight, GBBO, Big Family Cooking Showdown, and Crime Scene: The Vanishing At The Cecil Hotel before finding ways to Defund The Police Shows in an Extra Credit from Francoise. After flicking through Mackenzie Astin, Keith Coogan (yes, again), Married To The Mob, Tom Cruise, and more (Glemby) in What Now, it's on to the reviews. How do we vibe with the star ratings given to Rick Astley, Madonna, and R.E.M. -- of course -- in Listen Up? What about Moonstruck and September in Watch It? Then, once we revisit Charlie Schlatter, our very first One To Watch, it's on to the pop culture features. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today, we celebrate royalty. Carrie Fisher had an eclectic career, to say the very least. From her tumultuous childhood with mother Debbie Reynolds to her young career defined as Princess Leia to her final stage as an accomplished writer and advocate for those struggling with depression. Conor O'Donnell and I are joined by Courtney Enlow, associate editor of Syfy Wire fangirls and the co-host on podcasts Trends Like These and Strong Female Characters. The B-Sides discussed include Under The Rainbow, Garbo Talks, Hollywood Vice Squad, The Time Guardian, Appointment With Death, and She's Back. Carrie had a long, B-Sidey 80s folks! Of course, Postcards From The Edge comes up, as does Carrie Fisher's final book and her brief tryst with Harrison Ford. We also shout-out Courtney's fantastic piece on Britney Spears for Vanity Fair. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter at @TFSBSide. Also enter our giveaways, get access to our private Slack channel, and support new episodes by becoming a Patreon contributor. We are also now on Spotify and Stitcher. Enjoy!
Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith, the co-writer of The House Bunny, Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You, and much more LOVES Postcards from the Edge, and you should too. After She-Devil and Death Becomes Her, Meryl Streep makes her third appearance in a Criterinot film. She plays a fictionalized version of Carrie Fisher in the adaptation of Fisher's eponymous novel about a fictionalized version of Fisher's relationship with her mother, Debbie Reynolds, played by Shirley MacLaine. It's an onion of a movie and we peel back the layers as well as we can.
