¡A disfrutar!

1999's The Mummy - Directed by Stephen Sommers; Starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, Jonathan Hyde and Arnold Vosloo stars as Imhotep: a resurrected sorcerer with incredible powers of destruction. The Mummy is a throwback to early adventure films of early Hollywood, like we hadn't seen since Indiana Jones: And the Last Crusade fitting a mold that is a great blend of grand adventure with the supernatural we hadn't seen in over 10 years. One of the top 10 grossing films in the US of 1999, The Mummy is left with a legacy of uneven sequels and spinoffs (including the debut of Dwayne Johnson: Movie Star), and a remake to undo it entirely, but let none of that stop you from having a great time with this one.
On the newest episode of Comics and Chronic the guys discuss The Mummy. The Mummy is a 1999 American action-adventure film written and directed by Stephen Sommers, starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, and Arnold Vosloo in the title role as the reanimated mummy. It is a remake of the 1932 film of the same name. The film follows adventurer and treasure hunter Rick O'Connell as he travels to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, with librarian Evelyn Carnahan and her older brother Jonathan, where they accidentally awaken Imhotep, a cursed high priest with supernatural powers. The guys also discuss how Anthony will save us from AI. They talk about how hot the cast is and all of the cast's illustrious careers. Was Imhotep antisemitic? What were the conditions like on set? Would we survive this movie? Does this feel like an early MCU movie? Who would we cast as 90's MCU? Find out on the newest episode of Comics and Chronic! The year is 2004, cinematic universes haven't been invented yet, and CGI is the new exciting tech on the scene. So why not make a fantasy action movie where Van Helsing teams up with Frankenstein's monster to fight werewolves and defeat Dracula (and beat up Edward Hyde while he's at it)? Well, it turns out there are many reasons, but on the bright side there are horses, corsets, opera singers on stilts, sunlight bombs, and three very fabulous brides to show us a good time! Listen to us get increasingly angry in our in-depth review of Stephen Sommers' Van Helsing. Happy Halloween!
The early aughts saw Stephen Sommers riding high with the Universal monsters following the success of his Mummy films, so it seemed only natural that he would try his hand with a straight-up monster mash that featured Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolf Man. The result was Van Helsing, a Hugh Jackman star vehicle that made money at the box office but failed to kickstart a franchise thanks to tepid reviews and the violent rejection of fans. Join Sebastian, Jennifer and Rodney as they scream into spooky season with a lively debate over the vampiric value of this ludicrously bombastic blockbuster.

Stephen Sommers returns, ha get it, to give us a sequel to his highly successful film The Mummy with THE MUMMY RETURNS. We are joined by Sean O'Rourke, one half of the amazing MovieDumpster , to help us dissect this mostly forgotten sequel, and to help us determine if it should be remembered like its predecessor or lost in the abyss of most sequels. On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are unleashing an ancient evil into this world. We watched the 1999 film from Stephen Sommers, The Mummy.Look, accidentally uttering evil words from a surely cursed book that should never have been dug up in the first place could happen to anybody. It's not like Rick or Evie meant to awaken the great and powerful Imhotep.Mistakes happen, you know? It's kind of a jerk move to keep getting on their case about it. This week we return celebrating for some a much loved classic and for others a throw away monster mash up from 20 years ago this very week. We are looking back at Van Helsing (2004) on it's 20th Anniversary. We discuss our own history of this film with Robbie loving this nostalgic monster movie in his teens and Seb never really understanding the fuss. So how will we react upon our first viewings in at least 10 years or more. We talk of the sexual man Hugh Jackman, the classic monsters designs, heavy use of early 2000s CGI, Stephen Sommers other film catalogue, especially the Mummy and generally how much you can deem this a horror. So grab your machine gun like crossbows, find your coincidentally misunderstood map and gather your nearest monster based pals for a journey back to 2004 with Cast Me To Hell. Come and tell us your thoughts on Van Helsing or the episode in general @cmthpodcast on twitter and Instagram. If you enjoy our content then please Subscribe on your chosen platform and leave us a lovely rating and review to help our podcast grow.

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra is a somewhat successful live-action adaptation of the beloved GI Joe cartoon and toy line. It's a big, loud, dumb, and, at times, very fun action film. Most of the adjectives above will come as no surprise for fans of Stephen Sommers–he of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns fame. The DNA of what made those films such enjoyable adventure romps is here. Unfortunately, so is his penchant to go too far over the top. *Cough* Van Helsing. What Sommers gets wrong in this, he basically butchers. Eschewing common series lore in favor Hollywood tropes, GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra loses some of the magic from the property, turning off longtime fans and general audiences in the process. Despite there being internet murmurs that this movie, and Sommers' career prospects, deserved better, this one underperformed at the time of its release. It grossed just $302.5 million on a budget of $175. Critics also sent it the Slaughter House. It sits at 33% on Rotten Tomatoes with 169 reviews. But, hey, there is a good time to be had here, as long as you don't think too hard about it. After making The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, Stephen Sommers wanted to make a small movie; no monsters, no action, no visual effects, just something simple, but then he started thinking about all the Universal monster movies he loved as a child, and came up with a collective story of three monsters, connected by one man - Van Helsing - but not the Abraham Van Helsing you knew....Gabriel Van Helsing would be serving alongside Dracula with the Knights of the Holy Order before having to kill him. He would ask for his memories to be removed to purge himself of his sins, and end up walking the Earth for 400 years with no memories and end up at the Vatican. Hugh Jackman, fresh from playing Wolverine in X-Men, would be Van Helsing, and when Universal realised what they had, thoughts of a franchise appeared in front of them...It would be Universal's Dark Universe, before Universal's Dark Universe....I would love to hear your thoughts on Van Helsing (2004) !CONTACT....

We are wrapping up The Mummy franchise with the third installment: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor! Released only 9 years after the original, but taking place 20 years later, this film takes the O'Connells to China where Alex has awakened the Dragon Emperor and his terracotta army. Missing from the cast is Rachel Weisz (replaced by Maria Bello) and Rob Cohen replaces Stephen Sommers in the director's chair. How does this film hold up and stand against the other two Mummy movies? Check out what the guys think and let us know what you think of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor! The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are back and crusin' through the radical 1990s of cinema, this time stopping to examine "Deep rising," the creature-feature that helped launch Stephen Sommers before "The Mummy," and a failed TV pilot directed by Joe Dante, "Warlord: Battle for the Galaxy," otherwise known also as "The Osiris Chronicles," a sci-fi TV show that never got further than its second introductory episode. Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 403 includes: -R.I.P. Richard Lewis and the creator of Dragon Ball and its many iterations. -2024 Oscar recap and Nate finally reviews "Oppenheimer." -Ben has some complicated thoughts on "Poor Things." -Netflix's "Damsel" isn't quite Ben's "Damsel," and it suffers because of this. -By the Decade -- 1998 -- "Deep Rising" / "Warlord: Beyond the Galaxy" -The monster movie is an enjoyably campy B-movie that showcases the strneths of Sommers and his love of the sci-fi/action movies of old, and the guys have very little positively to say about "Warlord" and its failed attempts to develop an interesting new future world and characters worth following. It's a big miss.
Long before the Dark Universe, Universal had plans to build a massive franchise around the world's most famous monster hunter, but unfortunately, it never got past the first installment. Join “The Invisible Dan” and “Monster Mike” as they discuss Van Helsing as a perfect concept to unite a shared monster universe, and how Stephen Sommers' over-the-top, more-is-more approach may have ultimately doomed it from the start.
