Brian "Nasher" Nash was the guitarist for one of the most explosive and unforgettable bands of the 1980s – Frankie Goes to Hollywood. The Liverpool legends burst onto the scene with the banned-but-brilliant Relax, and quickly followed it up with two more chart-topping hits that defined a generation. In this episode of Misadventures in Music, Nasher shares a treasure trove of wild stories from his time at the top – from tax exile antics and surreal studio sessions to near-misses with Eddie Van Halen and the chaos of life on tour. It's a candid, hilarious, and at times emotional conversation with a man who's seen it all and come out the other side with his humour and heart intact.Tune in for tales of rebellion, resilience, and rock 'n' roll excess – Frankie-style.

I don't know about you, but I didn't watch any of this year's Grammy Awards. This used to be appointment viewing back in the day, but now - not so much. I thought, let's revisit the ceremonies of 1975, 1985, and 1995. While we might not be tuning in now, these past shows seems to actually matter - and I recognize that is because I am an old man yelling at clouds! While you early Xers may recall the '75 awards, for me it was 1985. Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, and Lionel Richie were huge stars, while Huey Lewis & the News had their big breakout with “Sports”.The Best New artist award went to Cyndi Lauper. The other nominees? Sheila E., Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Corey Hart, and The Judds! I think Cyndi might have deserved that one!I'm not sure if it just being a middle aged man that informs my lack of interest in modern awards shows - it seems as though the industry has changed since our youth. While it has always been about the record labels and their influence, it at least seemed as thought the artistry was equally, if not more important, than record sales alone. So, did you watch the Grammys this year and are there any artists I should actually take the time to listen to?

Do they know it's christmas ?

In this festive edition of Queer the Music Jake sits down with the iconic Holly Johnson, the front man of Frankie Goes To Hollywood, to discuss the 1984 UK number one single and enduring Christmas song, ‘The Power of Love'.   The Power of Love came out during a time of social and political turmoil in the UK. Between Thatcherism, the miner strike and an encroaching AIDS epidemic the world was becoming a scary place for the LGBTQ+ community. Despite this, gay bars, clubs and saunas were thriving in the UK and amongst it all Frankie Goes to Hollywood were skyrocketing to success with their debut album ‘Welcome to the Pleasuredome'.    Tune in to hear about how ‘The Power of Love' was written and how it unwittingly became synonymous with Christmas. Liverpool has long been a musical powerhouse. From Echo and the Bunnymen and Frankie Goes to Hollywood to its most famous sons, The Beatles, the City of Pop has shaped global culture. But Liverpool is far more than music and mop-tops.Home to two iconic football teams, Liverpool F.C. and Everton F.C., the city is also a gem for beer and food tourism. The Grapes pub offers cosy vibes and well-kept cask ales. Dead Crafty on Dale Street showcases rare international beers, while Azvex Brewery & Taproom is a must-visit. For amazing vegetarian Indian street food, Bundobust is unbeatable—don't miss the Paneer Tikka skewers! One of my all-time favourite breweries, now sadly closed, was Liverpool's Mad Hatter Brewery. Known for unique beers like Tzatziki Sour and the outrageous Smokey Bacon and Banana Rauchbier, they embodied creativity in brewing. Though gone, Mad Hatter remains a legend in the modern beer scene.Today, a lesser-known brewery, Colbier Brew Co, is carrying the torch. Founded in 2024 on a Bootle industrial estate, Colbier is making waves with Proper Sound Beers inspired by music. Founders Mike Corbett, Vik, and Stu have already showcased their brews at top venues like Manchester's Port Street Beer House and Sheffield's The Old Shoe.In this episode, I chat with Mike and Stu about launching a brewery with tight budgets, digging drainage channels with jackhammers, and crafting great beers on a DIY setup. Welcome to the Pleasuredome by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, released in 1984, is an ambitious and theatrical debut album that blends new wave, synth-pop, and dance music with a bold, provocative aesthetic. Spanning over an hour, the double album features iconic hits like "Relax" and "Two Tribes," which challenged social norms and pushed boundaries with their suggestive lyrics and politically charged messages. The album's title track, a sprawling 13-minute epic, encapsulates the hedonistic, larger-than-life energy of the band. Welcome to the Pleasuredome became a defining statement of 80s pop culture and remains a symbol of flamboyance and rebellion.Listen to the album on Apple MusicListen to the album on SpotifyWhat did you think of this album? Over the past 10-15 years, New Japan Pro Wrestling has become the poster child for these epic matches thanks to pairings like Okada-Omega, Ospreay-Shingo, and Ibushi-White, just to name a few. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest Suit Williams (Voices of Wrestling) play some music epics: songs that are 7 minutes or longer (and in some cases, way longer). Artists played include Metallica, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Nina Simone, Yes, The Temptations, David Bowie, Kendrick Lamar, and many more. Clear your schedule and hunker down with some snacks—these songs are going long!Theme song: "Hemispheres" by Silent PartnerFollow Music of the Mat on Twitter: @MusicoftheMatFollow Suit on Twitter: @SuitWilliamsSuit's blog: suitwilliams.wordpress.comAll VOW podcasts, articles, previews, and reviews: VoicesofWrestling.comJoin the VOW Discord to discuss Music of the Mat and other shows/topics: VoicesofWrestling.com/DiscordAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Super-special-secret friend Matt Heller (a.k.a. DJ Snakes) joins Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon for an in-depth discussion about what he's been listening to. In true DJ form, Snakes brings four rare/abstract vinyl singles to Electric Kitsch for a conversation about the DIY punk scene of his adolescence, the intersection of skateboarding and hip-hop, dusty independent soul holy grail 45s, proto-drumless rap from Wu's G.O.A.T. (arguably), and an unlikely emcee whose appeal is seemingly without boundaries. As always, an eclectic custom mixtape is curated and included on the back end. Lickers gonna lick. Join the fun! Joining Stuart in our Salford studio are Charlie Higson. After writing several books in the bestselling 'Young Bond' series, Charlie has written his first Bond for Adults. Stand up Bilal Zafar's new show 'Imposter' is about a once harmonious house-share that goes very wrong and Pravesh Kumar has written 'Frankie Goes to Bollywood', a new musical about an everyday girl from Milton Keynes plucked from obscurity to live the life of a bollywood star.Music this week comes from English Teacher, dubbed 2024's hottest new guitar band, and tik-tok sensation, classical guitarist Alexandra Whittingham.Presenter: Stuart Maconie Producer: Jessica TreenCHARLIE HIGSON Charlie Higson is an author, actor, comedian and writer for radio and television. He is the author of five beloved Young Bond books, starting with Silverfin in 2005. He's also the author of the ‘Enemy' series of Young adult Zombie adventures and the crime thriller ‘Whatever Gets You Through The Night'. He's also one of the brains behind one of the best comedy series of the 90's, ‘The Fast Show', which recently completed a 30th anniversary tour.A New Bond for a new Monarch, Charlie Higson's first ‘Adult' Bond – On His Majesty's Secret Service was written in double quick time for the coronation and is inspired by researching his history podcast. Higson's Bond is very much a man of 2023 – he's in tune with his gut biome, but he's still got the car, the gadgets and the girl.ENGLISH TEACHER Leeds based ‘English Teacher' have been hailed as 2024's hottest new guitar band, but they've spent time honing their craft - they've been playing together since meeting at the University of Leeds at 2018. In April they released their debut album, This Could Be Texas. Fresh from from touring America, they are vocalist Lily Fontaine, guitarist Lewis Whiting, drummer Douglas Frost, and bassist Nicholas Eden.PRAVESH KUMAR Back in the year 2000 armed with a credit card, Pravesh Kumar started the Rifco theatre company with an aim to tell accessible stories about British Asian communities like the one he grew up in in slough. Rifco's shows include the musical Britain's Got Bhangra, The Deranged Marriage and the film Little English. Along the way, Pravesh was awarded an MB for his contribution to British Theatre. His latest musical is ‘Frankie Goes to Bollywood' – the story of Frankie, played by Laila Zaidi, a normal girl plucked from obscurity in Milton Keynes to be the latest Bollywood star. Frankie is taken in by the glamour, a romance with leading man Raju King and a rivalry with a fellow Bollywood actress no longer deemed young enough.ALEXANDRA WHITTINGHAM Manchester-born Guitarist Alexandra Whittingham started with humble beginnings performing covers of Avril Lavigne and auditioning for Blackpool's Got Talent. Since then she has become a viral sensation through videos of her performing breathtaking classical arrangements on her guitar.Fresh off of signing with a major music label, Decca, she's here to tell us about her journey to becoming a revered guitarist and why it's important that classical music is accessible to everyone.BILAL ZAFARSharing a house can be an unpredictable experience, we've all heard about ‘nightmare' housemates. In Bilal Zafar's new show ‘Imposter' he tells the story of his old housemate, a story of compulsive lying, escalating threats and minty hot chocolate. Bilal is a ‘wry storyteller'; his previous shows are ‘Zafarcakes', about a joke on twitter that got out of hand, and the people who couldn't take a joke and ‘Care', about looking after wealthy residents in a care home, for minimum wage. He's also active on the Twitch streaming platform where he plays a manager from the game Pro Evolution Soccer 5 to an enthusiastic audience of ‘Assistant Managers'. Bilal won the new act of the year award in 2016 and was nominated for best Newcomer at the Edinburgh comedy awards

This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana discuss the 1984 Alfred Hitch....no, wait, the Brian DePalma noir thriller Body Double.  Fresh off of Scarface, DePalma used all his new clout and decided he wanted to rip off Alfred Hitchcock, but make it more sexy (?).  Bill Maher apparently wasn't avalible, so they got some dude who looked just like him, to perv around a fresh faced Melanie Griffith.  There is not a lot to like about this movie.  They took all the things we liked about Rear Window and Vertigo and sleazed them up.  But not sexy sleaze.  Just gross.   One high point is the "Relax" video from Frankie Goes to Hollywood that is filmed durning the middle of this movie.  Weird.  Hate watch the movie then love listen to the podcast.  Enjoy.

In A Kiss Across the Ocean: Transatlantic Intimacies of British Post-Punk and US Latinidad (Duke UP, 2022), Richard T. Rodríguez examines the relationship between British post-punk musicians and their Latinx audiences in the United States since the 1980s. Melding memoir with cultural criticism, Rodríguez spotlights a host of influential bands and performers including Siouxsie and the Banshees, Adam Ant, Bauhaus, Soft Cell, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and Pet Shop Boys. He recounts these bands' importance for him and other Latinx kids and discusses their frequent identification with these bands' glamorous performance of difference. Whether it was Siouxsie Sioux drawing inspiration from Latinx contemporaries and cultural practices or how Soft Cell singer Marc Almond's lyrics were attuned to the vibrancy of queer Latinidad, Rodríguez shows how Latinx culture helped shape British post-punk. He traces the fandom networks that link these groups across space and time to illuminate how popular music establishes and facilitates intimate relations across the Atlantic. In so doing, he demonstrates how the music and styles that have come to define the 1980s hold significant sway over younger generations equally enthused by their matchlessly pleasurable and political reverberations. Remember that time we cranked up Van Halen's '1984' and felt like rock legends in our living room? We're bringing that energy to your ears as we reminisce about the defining tunes and flicks from that remarkable year. Even without Lou 'the professor' on board, we're keeping the vibe electric, discussing everything from RCA Records family tales to the King himself, Elvis. You won't want to miss the laughter and the occasional tear as we navigate the music-infused paths of our memories.Strap in for a podcast episode that's as diverse as a '80s mixtape. We debate the music ban saga of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" and how T-shirt slogans became the unlikely megaphones of pop culture. Then, it's a sharp turn into the poignancy of Marvin Gaye's legacy and my own brush with the high stakes of the Border Patrol exam. The stories are rich, the lessons unexpected, and who knew that music history could offer insight into law enforcement?Let's roll up our sleeves and dig into the meaty debates of band lineups, chart-toppers, and those under-the-radar genius musicians who shaped the sound of an era. We laugh, we argue, we pay homage to the greats from George Benson to Squeeze, and tease each other's musical tastes with all the charm of a backstage band squabble. This is more than just a look back at 1984; it's a celebration of the tracks and tales that continue to echo through our lives.

Your Sinclair was one of the "Big 3" Spectrum magazines, alongside CRASH and Sinclair User.  It was considered to be more humourous and zany than its contemporaries.  Its final issue was in September 1993, which was an incredible run, considering the 16-bit computers had taken foothold years prior.  In 1991, they published their top 100 games list, which was compiled by staff writer Stuart Campbell.  It was a comprehensive list of games featuring many classics (and some curveballs).  Join Drisky and Kingy as they go through the games on this list.  With thanks to Gary Arnott for recreating that final cover for our own poster for this episode.  Here are the first 50 games in the first part: 100    Zzoom 99    Maziacs 98    Pheenix 97    Mined Out 96    Cruising on Broadway 95    The Train Game 94    RoboCop 93    Gyron 92    Green Beret 91    Avalon 90    Bounder 89    Cobra 88    Wheelie 87    Codename Mat 86    Trashman 85    Guardian 2: Revenge of the Mutants 84    Technician Ted 83    Football Manager 82    Hyperaction 81    Dark Star 80    Sir Lancelot 79    Atic Atac 78    Flying Shark 77    Gyroscope 76    Three Weeks in Paradise 75    Wriggler 74    Pang 73    Popeye 72    Hijack 71    Frankie Goes to Hollywood 70    G-Force 69    Match Point 68    Tapper 67    The Way of the Exploding Fist 66    Splat 65    Batty 64    Buggy Boy 63    Scrabble 62    Thrust 61    Eric and the Floaters 60    Knot in 3D 59    Hyper Sports 58    Operation Wolf 57    Dun Darach 56    Bounty Bob Strikes Back 55    Saboteur 54    Rastan 53    Ping-Pong 52    Jumping Jack 51    Robotron: 2084   Snow Notes: World of Stuart top 100 reproduction https://worldofstuart.excellentcontent.com/ys100/ystop100.htm?fbclid=IwAR2J01M29bQutvprNe91s7dmoxSpndRIAyKFS2nw9ozOuHGmR0G0xfvKp3I Kingy's Mined Out remake https://archive.org/details/mined Gyron Arena https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/2193/ZX-Spectrum/Gyron_Arena Joy Chant - The High Kings https://www.amazon.co.uk/High-Kings-Joy-Chant/dp/0553243063 Saturday Superstore - kids playing Speccy games https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9aUgK9rBGI Steven Smith's games (including VR ones) https://stephensmith.itch.io/ First Class TV show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cg-jmty8XuQ Neadeital https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/36565/ZX-Spectrum/Neadeital

rguably no music group had a bigger 18-month run than Frankie Goes to Hollywood in 1984 - no one. They dominated both music, the news, and pop culture - the world was their oyster, and in just two years,  they were gone.   Join Q and Tim as they dive into the iconic 80s hit, "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Would it be a hit if released in today's music landscape, despite the overt sexual innuendo and being banned by the BBC before it was even released? This hit, produced by the hottest producer of the moment,  Trevor Horn, conquered 1984 and skyrocketed an obscure group of lads from Liverpool to global sensations. From analyzing the lyrics and production to examining the cultural context of the time, this episode provides a thought-provoking discussion on the enduring appeal of this classic and controversial song, which spawned a fashion craze with T-shirts and defined the 80's musical landscape. In this episode we welcome the left's very own "national treasure" Billy Bragg – beamed in from his adopted Dorset – and ask him about the long and remarkable career that's enshrined in forthcoming box set The Roaring Forty. Billy revisits his Barking boyhood and early pop and folk influences, culminating in the 1977 formation of Clash-inspired punks Riff Raff. After a brief 1981 detour via the British Army, he explains how he settled on his unique solo style and delivery – and how he wound up on the cover of the NME in January 1984. Inevitably the conversation turns to politics and the way Billy has managed to retain his charm, humour and compassion in the face of hatred and extremism. An audio clip of Spectator editor Boris Johnson haranguing him at Glastonbury in 2000 is followed by discussion of left-wing patriotism, Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party and our present-day hyperpolarisation. Martin recalls the day Billy came to tea to ask about the RBP co-founder's father Bill and uncle Ken – and the catalytic impact Ken Colyer's Jazzmen had on the music Billy chronicled so impressively in his 2017 book Roots, Radicals and Rockers: How Skiffle Changed the World. From the Colyers and Lonnie Donegan we cross the big pond to talk about Woody Guthrie, the agit-folk bard whose lyrics Billy and Wilco turned into 1998's Mermaid Avenue album. Clips from Chris Smith's 1999 audio interview with Woody's daughter (and archivist) Nora Guthrie prompt conversation about the Okie icon's mighty legacy. After Mark quotes from recently-added articles about the Stooges, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Dr. Dre, Jasper wraps matters up with remarks on Truth Hurts and FKA Twigs. Many thanks to special guest Billy Bragg. For more about The Roaring Forty, as well as Roots, Radicals and Rockers, visit his website at billybragg.co.uk. Pieces discussed: Billy Bragg on the cover of the NME, Who the hell does Billy Bragg think he is?, Billy Bragg comes to tea, Nora Guthrie audio, Billy Bragg's Mermaid Avenue, The Stooges, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Dr. Dre, Truth Hurts and FKA Twigs.

So I was in Henley-on-Thames last week and there was this almost hidden bookshop next to a place called "The Ferret". (I kid you not.) High on a shelf there was an old leather-bound copy of Charles Dickens' lesser known Christmas stories. Not the long ones like "A Christmas Carol" or "The Chimes" or "The Haunted Man"; but short ones like "The Child's Story", "The Seven Poor Travellers", and "What Christmas Is As We Grow Older". What these stories all reveal -- for I started reading them on the airplane home -- is an explicit (tho' never didactic nor even artificial) dynamic of Christian Grace and One-Way Love. The author makes it clear in every tale that the core transaction of life in this world is the possibility of new beginning, new birth, resurrected hope, and empathic out-reaching love. Dickens always traces such dynamic beneficence specifically to Christ and His (Christmas) Goodness towards the lonely, the desperate, the poor, and even the rogues. In short, each story in this collection sets out the Whole Loaf. For many years -- many decades, it feels like sometimes -- I was perpetually mining my movies, my novels and my TV shows for implicit Christianity -- implicit Gospel, implicit Grace. And it can be found! But then one day I actually read Victor Hugo's Les Miserables and found the Whole Loaf in that celebrated novel. And then one day I read Leo Tolstoy's Resurrection and again: the Whole Loaf. And now I read Charles Dickens' short Christmas stories and again, Behold: the Whole Loaf. Part of the Loaf can be very good. Say, General Public (1980s), Nik Kershaw (ditto), Frankie Goes to Hollywood (ditto). But the Whole Loaf is better. And how the world needs it now. LUV U.
