N°4 … Say hello wave goodbye, le suivant N°2 … Torch, et le suivant ? N°3 What !Ça vous étonne, hein ?

In our previous episode, we went deep into the history of Cabaret Voltaire and their importance to UK industrial and, latterly, dance music. Now, we follow the trail we laid therein by taking a journey through the band's extensive discography, really fleshing out how they went from a Sheffield attic in 1973 to a Patagonian field site recording lizards for David Attenborough. Along the way, we take in televangelists, voodoo, Charles Manson samples, Velvet Underground covers, a near-miss with Todd Terry, and a Taylor Swift pressing-plant mix-up that turned a forgotten ambient track into a viral curiosity decades later.Phil Eaglesham (aka P6 - ex-Stretchheads and De Salvo, current OMO frontman) returns to bestow upon us his encyclopaedic knowledge of the band and British industrial music. We start in 1974 with the lo-fi bedroom experiments of Cabaret Voltaire 1974–76, work through the rough-edged early Rough Trade EPs, the spring-reverb wilderness of Three Mantras and Voice of America, the cult monument that is Red Mecca, and the band's stylistic pivots through Hai!, 2x45, The Crackdown, Micro-Phonies, The Covenant, the Sword and the Arm of the Lord, Code, and beyond. We also pick at the more controversial late chapters, including the major-label years, the slightly-too-late acid house pivot, and Richard H. Kirk's solo reactivation of the name.Along the way, we explore the band as a video production company that happened to make music; their roles as curators and tastemakers via Double Vision; the Burroughs-and-televangelism worldview that made them frighteningly prescient about Reagan-era Christian nationalism; and their unsung debt to Black American music and dub. Chris also offers a wider reflection on what it means to lose the egoless purity of your earliest creative work as ambition and industry pressures take hold.We get deep in the weeds talking about the producers they worked with (Flood, Adrian Sherwood, John Robie, Marshall Jefferson); the labels (Rough Trade, Some Bizzare, Virgin, EMI, Mute); their collaborators and contemporaries (DAF, Wire, Throbbing Gristle, Clock DVA, Soft Cell, New Order, The Shamen); and the bands that lifted from them wholesale (Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, The Rapture, White Zombie, and a generation of Glasgow acts you've heard but can't quite place). It all culminates in us taking a closer look at Eight Crepuscule Tracks, a record that Phil thinks is their best and a very pure statement of what the band can and did achieve. We also settle upon what is perhaps the most important lesson to be gleaned from the Cabs' music: the importance of never compromising on your vision. By entering the belly of the beast and somehow remaining intact, they became one of the rare bands in this corner of music history whom nobody has a bad word for.Highlights00:00 Intro01:18 Welcome Back, Phil02:46 1974–76: Egoless Experimentation04:51 Bedroom Records06:30 Extended Play and DAF07:37 The Velvet Underground Cover08:26 Nag Nag Nag10:20 Van With a PA11:38 Three Mantras12:24 Mix-Up14:50 William Burroughs16:48 Voice of America19:35 Peter Care and Double Vision21:41 Red Mecca24:25 Encyclopaedia Bands27:36 Hai!29:36 2x45 in New York32:07 Sheffield's Family Tree32:55 Chris Watson Leaves36:16 The Crackdown42:23 Micro-Phonies46:38 Covenant, Sword and Arm of the Lord49:48 Drinking Gasoline51:45 Code54:58 Listen Up and Reissues57:12 Groovy, Laidback and Nasty1:00:15 Body and Soul1:03:56 Shadow of Fear1:04:51 The Taylor Swift Accident1:08:27 Richard Kirk's Death1:14:50 Bus Shelter Bashes1:19:58 Sincerity vs Seriousness1:25:00 Debt to Black Music1:29:00 Eight Crepuscule Tracks1:51:00 Why Everyone Loves Cab Vol1:58:36 Coming Soon: Coil?!

In His Wake is the debut release from PINES, a new project from Detroit-born artist Josh Hight, a former member of early 2000s post-punk outfit The Detachment Kit and solo artist under the name Irons. The EP was recorded in East Sussex produced by Richard Norris (The Grid). In His Wake is being released via Semaphore Records on 10” LP vinyl, digital download and streaming services September 5. In His Wake was shaped by grief, disillusionment, and a search for something beyond the visible world. The songs here are intimate and expansive, fusing the weight of lived experience with a sense of mysticism and emotional pull. This is music made from memory, distance, and quiet intensity, possessing a rich sonic depth, blending shoegaze, slow-burn Americana, and dreamlike psychedelia. Special guests include Andy Bell (Ride, Oasis) on guitar, Emmett Kelly (Bonnie “Prince” Billy, The Cairo Gang, The Hard Quartet) on guitar and bass, and vocals from Dottie Cochran of Deary. The title track, “In His Wake,” is a reflection on being the only surviving child in a family touched by loss—haunted by absence but also frustrated by the dullness and complacency of adulthood. “Fifteen” explores a formative relationship marked by imbalance, looking back on it through the lens of maturity, with all its contradictions intact. “Uriel” is a ritual invocation—part hymn, part apocalyptic prayer—calling to the archangel in a time of digital saturation, collapse, and the possibility of transcendence. A professional photographer and director, Hight's creative work lives at the intersection of image, sound, and emotion. His musical vision is is raw, cinematic, and steeped in atmosphere. Richard Norris' first production was Jack The Tab, the seminal acid house album co-created with Genesis P-Orridge of Psychic TV. He went on to work with artists including Joe Strummer, Sun Ra, Robert Fripp, and Dave Ball of Soft Cell as part of The Grid, as well as Erol Alkan in the psychedelic duo Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve. Josh met producer Richard Norris at a Stone Club event in London, where they discovered they lived minutes from each other in Lewes. What began as a collaboration on film soundtracks soon evolved into a deeper creative partnership. The EP was recorded at Norris' Metal Box Studios in Lewes. We mark the passing of founder member Dave Ball, by looking back at his time in Soft Cell alongside Marc Almond Presented by J.R. Southall, with Jon Arnold, Simon Brett and Eric Drass Eric's Shardcore website
For this episode — the first to feature RBP's editorial co-ordinator William Pike — we're joined by Melody Maker legend Simon Price for a discussion of his career, his championing of Manic Street Preachers, and Radiohead's first tour since 2018. Beginning in the South Wales town of Barry, we hear about Simon's boyhood, his formative pop passions and the first of his distinctive sartorial metamorphoses. He recalls his late '80s move to London and the years at Melody Maker that took in his first interviews with fellow Welshmen the Manics and his integral involvement in the Neo-glam sub-genre known as Romo. Our guest's review of the first Radiohead album provides the cue for clips from Amy Linden's 1997 audio interview with Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood. We hear Thom talking about the just-released OK Computer and about his beef with Melody Maker itself: this prompts a general discussion of the band's standing as they prepare for the first date of their European tour. After reflecting on the 13 years he spent reviewing gigs for the Independent on Sunday, Simon discusses the gestation of 2021's Curepedia, the "Cure A-Z" he assembled for White Rabbit books. We conclude the episode with tributes to jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette and keyboardist David Ball, phlegmatic foil to Soft Cell frontman Marc Almond. Many thanks to special guest Simon Price. Curepedia: An A–Z of the Cure is published by White Rabbit and available from all good bookshops. Pieces discussed: Articles, interviews and reviews from Simon Price, Manic Street Preachers: Drags to Riches, Radiohead: Pablo Honey, Radiohead audio (1997), Jack DeJohnette: More Than One Way, Soft Cell: Cell Division and The Tainted Life of Soft Cell

We open with a sobering follow-up: the future is less about AI toast (though Red Dwarf predicted it) and more about a soul-stripping "infrastructure of meaningless" after an AWS outage proved how fragile the internet is. Corporate overlords, like Elon Musk, are taking note: he finally addressed Starlink's use by Asian scam syndicates, but his attention is mostly on superintelligence, which Wozniak, Prince Harry, and 800 others want banned. Meanwhile, Meta, despite pouring $27 billion into data centers, suddenly cut 600 AI jobs, and Amazon is preparing to automate a half-million warehouse positions, offering drivers AR spy glasses and suggesting a new "Help Me Decide" AI tool to automate the exhausting micro-decision of which air fryer to buy. This dystopian fever dream peaked when Suzanne Somers' widower revealed he built a full-on robotic AI twin of the late actress. Predictably, Tesla stock tumbled, and the crypto grift continued with the pardoning of Binance founder Zhao, leaving SBF to ponder his failed check-bounce in jail.Speaking of soul-crushing, Disney's latest nostalgia raid, Tron: Ares, tanked harder than anticipated, proving not every Gen-X intellectual property is a worthy cash cow. But fear not, there's still great TV to be had: we recommend the clever dramas Slow Horses and The Diplomat Season 3, the high-stakes culinary nightmare Knives Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars, and the surprisingly excellent Gen V (which you must watch before the next season of The Boys). We also got our fix with the Pluribus trailer, Bullet Train, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, and the deliciously low-stakes reality shows Come Dine With Me, Hotel Costiera, and The Celebrity Traitors UK/Canada. Sadly, we must mourn the end of Food Network's The Kitchen. Yet, no matter how good the show, you still have to deal with Ticketmaster, which is still lying about "fighting bots" while cornering the secondary market. In the world of Apps & Doodads, OpenAI dropped its "Anti-Web" browser, ChatGPT Atlas (a data mule in disguise), and a new app now fakes your vacation photos (perfect for burned-out users). X is poised to sell "rare" usernames for millions (with a terrible subscription catch), while some clever hacker figured out a $60 mod to disable the privacy light on Meta's Ray-Ban spy glasses. Fellow podcast host Dave Bittner joined us to agree that the new Hall of Presidents format is better without the political posturing and confirmed the joy of old-school, purple-ink-smelling Spirit Duplicators (and we checked out a Star Wars fan film trailer for the AT THE LIBRARY section). Josh Hight's new release "In His Wake" from his project PINES was shaped by grief, disillusionment, and a search for something beyond the visible world. The EP was recorded at Norris' Metal Box Studios in Lewes. www.Instagram.com/_p.i.n.e.s_ www.JoshHight.com About Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris The Music Matters Podcast is hosted by Darrell Craig Harris, a globally published music journalist, professional musician, and Getty Images photographer. This week on The Metro, Rev. Jeff Ivins brings you these artists for your time warp back to the 1980s: Talking Heads, Naked Eyes, The Cure, Mike + The Mechanics, Eddie Money, Animal Nightlife, Blasters, 1927, Soft Cell, Yaz, Undertones, The Hooters, and finishing up with Sheena Easton.
This week, our good friend Paul Menotiades returns to help us unpack the unlikely rise of Soft Cell's 1981 synth-pop smash, “Tainted Love.” Originally a 1965 Northern Soul obscurity by Gloria Jones, Soft Cell's eerie, slowed-down cover became a global sensation, topping charts in 17 countries and spending a record-breaking 43 weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 . But beyond the hit, Marc Almond and David Ball were more than just pop stars—they were art school provocateurs with a flair for the theatrical, as heard on their debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, which explored themes of urban isolation and seedy nightlife . Join us as we dive into the duo's bizarre back catalog and ask: does Soft Cell's music deserve more love, or is it all just a bit too tainted?
