La nave llamada icaro había sido desarrollada para probar que si era posible adentrarse en un agujero negro y salir de allí. Su tripulante era el doctor Jonas Vance y era reconocido por toda la comunidad científica como una mezcla de excéntrico y valiente. Jonás no era un astronauta común; era un cartógrafo del tejido espaciotemporal.  Su misión a bordo de de el icaro consistía en mapear las "arrugas" en el espaciotiempo causadas por la cercanía de un agujero negro de masa intermedia bautizado como Cronos. Allí pues estaba el científico con el silencio a su alrededor aunque El silencio en el vacío del espacio no es absoluto; suena como un zumbido eléctrico muy tenue, casi imperceptible. Para el doctor Jonás Vance, ese zumbido era la única constante de su viaje que ya llevaba mucho tiempo. Una tarde (si es que se le puede llamar tarde a un ciclo artificial de luces LED), los sensores cuánticos de la estación científica en el icaro detectaron una anomalía inédita. No era una simple dilatación temporal, donde el tiempo corre más lento. Era una bucle de torsión de espacio tiempo. Y eso era de por si maravilloso porque significaba que el tejido del universo se plegaba sobre si mismo y se provocaría que el tiempo y/o el espacio se repetirían indefinidamente en un ciclo inesperado. Frente a la cúpula de observación, el espacio no era negro; se retorcía como aceite en el agua, reflejando distorsiones de estrellas que ya habían muerto y de otras que aún no habían nacido.Jonás, impulsado por esa curiosidad científica que a menudo roza la insensatez, decidió acercar la su nave al borde del bucle. Su inteligencia artificial, Mnemósine, le advirtió con su habitual voz monótona:"Doctor Vance, la gradiente gravitacional está cruzando el umbral de seguridad. Si avanza diez metros más, la relatividad general dejará de ser una teoría amable para usted. Y pasara a ser una total variación desconocida""Solo un poco más, Mnemósine. Quiero ver que sucede adentro y como es el reverso de este bucle infinito ", respondió Jonás, con los ojos fijos en el monitor de fluctuación cuántica.Un parpadeo. Eso fue todo.No hubo sacudidas, ni alarmas estridentes. Pero al mirar por el ordenador de a bordo, el contador de tiempo exterior se había vuelto loco. Los dígitos no avanzaban como siempre lo habían hecho. Ahora el tiempo se multiplicaba en cascada, mostrando números negativos y coordenadas espaciales que no existían en sus mapas.Al mirar por la ventana de la sonda, la estación orbital  de donde había partido ya no estaba allí. En su lugar, el espacio se había desplegado como un libro abierto. Jonás no estaba viendo el espacio a través del tiempo; estaba viendo el tiempo como si fuera espacio.A la izquierda: Podía ver una línea brillante que se extendía hacia el infinito. Al hacer zum con la cámara, se vio a sí mismo de niño, cayendo de una bicicleta en la Tierra.A la derecha: Una neblina difusa mostraba múltiples versiones de la estación espacial Ananké colapsando, sobreviviendo, o siendo abandonada. El futuro no era una línea; era un delta de ríos posibles.Podia ver al mismo tiempo el pasado y el futuro. Jonás estiró la mano hacia el tablero. Para su horror, el movimiento de sus dedos dejaba un rastro de "fantasmas" estáticos en el aire. Cada milisegundo de su propia existencia física se estaba solidificando en el espacio de la cabina.Si se quedaba allí quieto, el propio tiempo de su cuerpo se congelaría, convirtiéndolo en una estatua de carne y hueso atrapada en un instante eterno."Mnemósine, calcula vector de salida usando la energía cinética del agujero negro", ordenó, descubriendo que su voz sonaba en diferentes tonos a la vez, como un coro de sí mismo."Para salir de una dimensión temporal espacializada, debemos crear un ancla gravitatoria. Necesitamos masa. Mucha masa", respondió la IA, cuya voz ahora venía del futuro inmediato.Jonás comprendió lo que debía hacer. La sonda tenía un micro-reactor de materia oscura para emergencias. Si lo detonaba en el punto exacto de la torsión, la explosión no lo destruiría; curvaría el tejido lo suficiente como para "empujarlo" de vuelta a la corriente temporal normal.Pero había un precio. La física del espaciotiempo es una contabilidad estricta: para avanzar, algo debe quedar atrás.Con el corazón latiendo a un ritmo que ya no correspondía con el reloj de la nave, Jonás configuró el reactor. Esperó a que la línea de su propio pasado pasara cerca de la trayectoria de la sonda. Justo cuando vio el destello de la Ananké en el momento exacto en que él había partido... activó la detonación.Un destello blanco cegador lo absorbió todo.Jonás despertó con el sonido del zumbido eléctrico. Estaba en la cabina de la Ícaro. El espacio exterior volvía a ser negro, salpicado de estrellas fijas y distantes. El agujero negro Cronos giraba pacíficamente a lo lejos."¿Mnemósine? ¿Informe de situación?", preguntó, limpiándose el sudor de la frente."La sonda ha regresado a la zona segura, doctor. La anomalía se ha disipado."Jonás suspiró aliviado y miró el reloj de la nave. Marcaba exactamente la misma hora y el mismo segundo en el que había decidido acercarse al bucle. No había pasado ni un instante.Sonrió, pensando que todo había sido un espejismo de la gravedad. Sin embargo, al ir a registrar los datos en el cuaderno físico que guardaba en la guantera, se le heló la sangre.Sobre el papel texturizado, escrito con una caligrafía temblorosa que reconoció de inmediato como la suya, había un mensaje que no recordaba haber escrito, pero que sabía perfectamente cuándo lo había hecho:Bienvenido de vuelta. No vuelvas a mirar de cerca el bucle. Recuerda que  El tejido recuerda a quienes lo pisan y siempre lo harán pagar por la osadía. Jonás miró de reojo la cúpula. Fuera, en la inmensidad del vacío, le pareció ver, por una fracción de segundo, la silueta de una sonda idéntica a la suya, flotando eternamente en los márgenes de lo que fue y de lo que siempre será.

This week in the FoG we revive a fan-favorite series that's been requested for years now. In 2019, largely in solidarity with our American immigrant neighbors, we covered a series of international language films we called Speaking in Tongues. The first two volumes came out in rather quick succession, but now -- seven years later -- we kick off volume three with the debut feature film from Academy Award winning director Guillermo del Toro. CRONOS tells the simple fable of Jesus Gris, a grandfather and antiques dealer who stumbles upon a strange device which clasps and cuts into his hand. Soon, Gris begins to change in ways he can't explain, setting him down a grotesque path of pain and gruesome transformation.We're joined by friend of the show and fellow film critic Thomas Manning to unpack this tightly constructed gem, which showcases both the early filmmaking talents and thematic interests of the landmark director.Also featuring a discussion with fellow podcast co-host (of the podcast 1ofmystories) Lindsey Dunn about the first episode of DARK, Season 3. Guillermo del Toro has yet to find any boundaries when it comes to intimacy within a story or the scope of its telling. He uses genre like a stained palette, leaving residue of fusions and clear-cut influences.So it makes sense that his debut, CRONOS, is no different. Del Toro reinvents the vampire using alchemy, entomology, Gothic principles, the mixture of Medevial and Renaissance periods. But anchoring this smattering of ideas is the simplest one: the unconditional love between a grandfather and granddaughter.Jesus Gris (Federico Luppi) is a Mexican antique shop owner raising his granddaughter Aurora (Tamara Xanath). One day, they discover a golden egg-shaped device hidden in one of the shop's archangel statues. After fumbling with the device's dial, Jesus is wounded when the Cronos machine pops out sharp, insect-like legs and latches itself into his hand, Facehugger-style. What starts as mere accident lingers in Jesus' mind as he finds himself not only drawn to the device but also its method of doling out pain. The more Jesus uses the Cronos device, the more vivacious and young he feels. But this newfound rejuvenation comes with an aching appetite for flesh, for blood.CRONOS introduces many of the subjects found throughout Del Toro's 30+ year career: death, fatherhood, the clash between an archaic past and promising future, Ron Perlman. It sometimes feels as though the movie is incapable of holding all the thought that went into its world's development but that's part of what I enjoy about Del Toro. His movies are never complete after first viewing.
