Show Notes This week, we recap and discuss Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack (機動戦士ガンダム 逆襲のシャア), while trying to avoid spoiling the discussions coming up in future episodes. Before we dig in to the movie itself, Thom presents research on how and why Char's Counterattack got made - background information on the production, tie-in novels, and other versions of the story. We also discuss how we'll be pronouncing a number of the names in the film. The Other Counterattacks Japanese-language Interviews with various staff for CCA, including producer Uchida Kenji. Much of the information about the production timeline is based on information and images collected in this discussion on Twitter. Japanese-language summary of Beltorchika's Children. Different Japanese language blog entries with some details about Hi-Streamer and Beltorchika's Children including publication dates. Translated version of the original Zeta proposal (but be warned that this incorporates antisemitic conspiracy theories). Interviews with Nagano Mamoru and Izubuchi Yutaka, both touching on the behind-the-scenes of Char's Counterattack. Japanese Wikipedia page on 'Gaia Gear' (aka Mobile Suit Gaia Gear: Char's Counterattack). Japanese-language commentary on Beltorchika's Children. And of course... Beltorchika's Children itself: 富野 由悠季 (Tomino Yoshiyuki), 機動戦士ガンダム 逆襲のシャア―ベルトーチカ・チルドレン (Beltorchika's Children). Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko (1988). From the Talkback Oshii Mamoru talks about Char's Counterattack (including the politically-charged language). Japanese-language explanation of the Buddhist origins for the commonly used word 邪魔 (じゃま / jama). The demon in question. Japanese-language explanation of the differences between 粛清 (purge) and 粛正 (purge). Music "Dangerous Tonight" by VYVCH. Emily Fleuriot is a London-based artist and writer, who is currently evolving her creative practice - feeling her way to a body of work, mainly through drawing, printmaking and writing. Against the backdrop of everyday life, Emily has been steadily flexing and tuning her creative muscle memory, returning to her long held passions for art and storytelling. Emily is returning to art and writing following a decade-long hiatus which she broke four years ago, beginning with evening classes at Royal Drawing School. Her commitment to taking a studio at Wimbledon Art Studios is an important step towards her intention to not just to give more time to art and to understand herself better through her creative practice, but also to examine the arts in the everyday. Her belief is that we can all be creative and use that creativity as a tool to understand ourselves, express our feelings and beliefs, and alleviate anxieties. "One of the most challenging things about my art is choosing the fruit! Grocery shopping has never been quite the same since I began to search out the most engaging 'models' for my paintings and prints." Jane is a London-based painter and printmaker with a fascination for light, nature and scale. Born in Chelsea, she studied art and design at Wimbledon School of Art and the London College of Printing and lived in Singapore and Hong Kong for a while, where she also studied Chinese calligraphy. Jane regards all her subjects as portraits, whether flora or fauna, exploring the character behind each model, be it the figure-like shape of pears that exude human qualities, the secret of an unopened lily, or the playful cheekiness of a bird. For her most recent work, Jane has been experimenting with variable printing techniques. Using stencils, she paints directly onto silk screens, applying the paint in many layers to create depth and texture. The application of colour can be controlled to a certain extent, but the process is all the more intriguing because there is an element of randomness when the paint is drawn through the screen. Why not have a look at her artwork over here (https://www.wimbledonartstudios.co.uk/jane-bain) while listening? It enriches the experience and provides context. Georgia Kitty Harris is a London-based printmaker and illustrator, who studied Fine Art at Kingston and did an MA in printmaking at the Royal College of Art. Georgia's work currently uses animals as avatars to explore an interest in taxonomy. The ways in which people classify and group themselves is in a constant state of flux, and there's something she finds reassuring in the collective nouns and orders of animals. It's like an anthropomorphic representation of belonging. While listening to the interview, please check out Kitty's artwork here (https://www.wimbledonartstudios.co.uk/georgia-kitty-harris)as it puts it in better context. This is not the Beauty and the Beast you've heard. It's not even the story the one you've heard is based on. That one is a super-pared-down version of an 18th century French novella. The original contains way too much description about fairy politics and power structures, 18th century Pandora, and an idea for a "Downton Abbey" reboot...with monkeys. The creature of the week is Papa Bois, from Trinidad and Tobago. He will show you why regular exercise and a balanced diet of strangers lost in the forest will keep you healthy well into old age.
