The rewatch with our dear acquaintance Jesse Armstrong continues with season 1, episode 2, Shit Show at the Fuck Factory. Dear Jesse, talk me through your feelings on titles? It's the perspicacious Firecrotch & Normcore reporting for duty, and we are back at the beginning of all things with THE CREATOR, Jesse Armstrong. In the first of our week-by-week rewatches, we establish a dynamic that says 'I respect you, but I'm not awed by you.' And that 'I like you, but I need you to like me before I can love you.' Two recent Supreme Court rulings and big FAFSA changes prompted the guys to record a Special Edition. No format, no breaks, no producer...just Joel and Chris discussing the impact of SCOTUS and the FAFSA Simplification Act. This episode is about facts and impact, and not about opinions. Listen, learn, understand and form your own opinions. Music on this episode comes from Normcore always (https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Normcore/Neighbors/Heartless_Man).
What is the line between supporting student dreams and being brutally honest? Too far one way, counselors might be naive. Too far the other, and you get nicknamed, "The Dreamcrusher." Joel and Chris bring two amazing guests: Jennifer Glass from Lloyd Memorial High School (KY) and Michelle Rasich from Rowland Hall (UT). Our nearly 100 years combined experience tackles this very question. Music on this episode comes from Normcore always (https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Normcore/Neighbors/Heartless_Man). And new to the podcast is "New Beginnings" by scottholmesmusic (https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Holmes/inspiring-background-music/new-beginnings)
What next for Firecrotch & Normcore? Details within. And, your headline act... Jesse Armstrong recorded live at the Orwell Festival in London. He was on excellent form. The event was titled 'Politics and Drama' - there's plenty of both, plus loads about Jesse's career, and specifically 'Succession'.More about the Orwell Foundation: https://www.orwellfoundation.com/ Hosted on Acast. Stand up and host of the brilliant Succession podcast Firecrotch and Normcore, Sara Barron, is Margaret's guest this week. It's a very giggly show that lurches from the pitfalls of writing tween erotica, falling in love with Elliot after Elliot, the improbably named Baskin twins (no relation to Carol, I assume) and the allure of a bad boy. Or even, a boy who knows a bad boy. Margaret is still locked out of her Twitter (Elon, if you're listening, could you step up?) so do follow her (and the show) at @crushedbymcs on Twitter. The Substack is the place to head if you want to see a sneak peek at our new cover artwork which will be making it's debut next episode, or find out more about our London Podcast Festival guests. It's going to be pretty special. That's all the admin! Til next time, Team Crushed xx
What's more important, taking hard classes or getting A's? Well, it depends. Sit back and listen to Joel and Chris dive into this Megasode. The guys talk to Tim Lee from LeMoyne and Lee Coffin from Dartmouth. Music on this episode comes from Normcore always (https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Normcore/Neighbors/Heartless_Man). As figures show more than a third of parents are using debt to pay for childcare, Nuala will be meeting two women who've gone deep into the red to pay nursery fees in order to maintain a career and discussing whether the financial risk has been worth it. The government has announced that it is set to close what it calls an ‘unacceptable' loophole which allows e-cigarettes to be given to teenagers - a ban on nicotine free products to under 18s is also being considered. Research by NHS Digital shows that one in five 15-year-old girls use electronic cigarettes, which is 7% higher than boys of the same age. Nuala is joined by Linda Bauld, Professor of Public Health at Edinburgh University as well as Leanne McGuire, the mother of a teenager who was addicted to vaping at 15 and Rob Pavey, the Headteacher at a secondary school in Oxford to discuss. Writer and Podcaster Jackie Adedeji speaks to Nuala about her new Channel 4 documentary UNTOLD: My Big Boobs, a look into the impacts of having big boobs and the rise in breast reduction surgery. Sarah Ditum also joins to discuss the cultural trends of breasts through the years. Succession has ended after four dramatic seasons. It has been called ‘the greatest TV show ever made.' The satirical dark comedy-drama about power, politics and a family dynasty followed the highly dysfunctional Roy family. The show might be a fantastic snapshot into the lives of the top 1% but it has also produced some incredible female characters. Nuala hears more about the women in Succession from comedian Sara Barron, who co-hosts Firecrotch and Normcore: a Succession Podcast, and Journalist Laura Martin. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Emma Pearce
Does the new stand-up special Baby J from John Mulaney live up to his previous work (1:40)? We explain why Somebody Somewhere on HBO is well done normcore television (15:54). After the break, we have a quick audience question (28:26) before we dissect how Perry Mason does mystery right (28:56).
In a sea of crossovers, SUVs and big-budget luxury cars, the lowly, economically friendly hatchback has started to fall out of favor. Though, Toyota is still throwing its Corolla into the fray, and brought the 12th-gen Corolla into the world in 2018. For '23, Toyota gave the Corolla a light styling refresh, a new standard eight-inch media screen and an upgraded radio. Powering the '23 Corolla is a 2.0-liter I4 that feeds 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque through a CVT. From there, power hits the front wheels. Of course, this isn't as radical as the absurd GR Corolla, but this basic Toyota hatchback handles the daily grind without breaking your bank account. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the '23 Corolla and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you around the '23 Corolla and shows off some of its most interesting features. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to the show, Wren chats with Patrick Carone to give more context about the '23 Corolla, compare it to its more powerful GR counterpart and discuss how it stacks up with its major rival: the Honda Civic. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes this Corolla Hatchback special.
Through her on-location reporting, war journalist Clarissa Ward has put herself at risk to make sure we're informed on some of the most important, global issues of our time. Clarissa explains her job's emotional ups and downs when returning from a war zone, other hazards that go along with the job, her experience as a female reporter. In this episode, Clarissa shares with Amanda how her instincts are just as important as learning the shorthand language between teams on the ground and how she handles high-stress, deadly work situations. IN THIS EPISODE: [00:00] The discussion begins with women who claim to support other women but, in reality, many don't, and the concept of women in the news industry 04:39] The advantages of being a female reporter. How people view a professional woman [08:48] Clarissa discusses how 9/11 forged her career, what that path looked like, and how Baghdad played a significant role [14:25] What is neutrality, and how does a journalist achieve it [20:57] Clarissa explains her job's emotional ups and downs when returning from a war zone and other hazards that go along with the job [26:29] The war correspondent job will take you away from your family at inconvenient times. Can your family fully accept the danger it involves? [33:14] Clarissa reflects on close calls, death, the language of a war zone and the value of security consultants [41:10] Clarissa shares her desire to keep stories on the front page KEY TAKEAWAYS: A crisis happening in one part of the world will always directly impact other countries. However, it may not be evident at the time. Journalists should not inject their opinion when reporting. Instead, they should be telling the story. Being on Twitter frequently does not make you a journalist. One hazard of being a war correspondent is the emotional and physical effects on your body and soul. It can be a number of different things, but it's definitely not sitting on Twitter thousands of miles away spatting off your opinion about things; there isn't anything wrong with that, it's just not journalism.” Clarissa Ward “I believe in truthfulness rather than neutrality, and so the idea that you constantly try to give the same amount of gravitas or import to a false narrative coming from one side as you do from the reality on the ground on the other side; I'm uncomfortable with that.” Clarissa WardSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
