Today, we're diving head first into the AI art debate, which to be honest, is an absolute mess. If you've been on the internet this past week, you've seen the Studio Ghibli memes. These images are everywhere — and they've widened an already pretty stark rift between AI boosters and critics. Brian Merchant, author of the newsletter and book Blood in the Machine, wrote one of the best analyses of the Ghibli trend last week. So I invited him onto the show not only to discuss this particular situation, but also to help me dissect the ongoing AI art debate more broadly.  Links:  OpenAI's Studio Ghibli meme factory is an insult to art itself | Brian Merchant Seattle engineer's Ghibli-style image goes viral Seattle Times OpenAI just raised another $40 billion round from SoftBank | Verge ChatGPT “added one million users in the last hour.” | Verge ChatGPT's Ghibli filter is political now, but it always was | Verge OpenAI, Google ask the government to let them train on content they don't own | Verge Studio Ghibli in the age of A.I. reproduction | Max Read OpenAI has a Studio Ghibli problem | Vergecast AI slop is a brute force attack on the algorithms that control reality | 404 Media The New Aesthetics of Fascism | New Socialist Credits: Decoder is a production of The Verge and part of the Vox Media Podcast Network. Stephen Mac Devitt looks at Centaur Art The Future of Art in the Age of Generative AI by Remo Pareschi Over the past two years Generative AI has taken grip of the public imagination, both hype and hysteria in equal measure. The ease of creating fantastical images by text alone, and the immediacy of social media to spread them far and wide, has given the very complex AI an easily digestible and understandable output. Arriving in the era of fake news, this feeds into ever growing concerns about what is real and what we can trust. Centaur Art The Future of Art in the Age of Generative AI reviewed Historically technological leaps bring controversy; the printing press, the camera, colour film, the list goes on. The existing order is upset, professions and skills are replaced, old methods replaced and new opportunities arise. Previously, to create an image, say of the Pope in a Balenciaga-style white puffer jacket, would have required in-depth knowledge of software such as Adobe Photoshop or similar, and a great deal of skill. Now, photorealistic imagery and video can be created by prompt alone at the touch of a button, some would argue democratising art and design, raising questions of who gets to call themselves an artist. It is in this space that Remo Pareschi writes Centaur Art, a book about the interplay of AI and artist, together in collaboration to form something new. This hybrid of human and algorithm, where machines processing vast amounts of data work with human insights, creativity and emotional intelligence to create an augmented or hybrid intelligence, with the potential to surpass either operating in isolation. Image is the lens the book examines AI through, while touching briefly on similar applications to other sectors such as government, military, healthcare and the corporate sector. The first parts of the book give context and background to AI and how it works, from its early origins to current evolutions. A similar background is given to previous artistic movements whose methods or underlying principles are relatable to generative AI imagery creation - those that have explicitly explored the automation of artistic creation and the use of systems and collaboration. The book then looks under the hood, attempting to pull back the curtain and explain the workings by comparing various different forms of AI, from those used in games to the networks required for user interaction. Returning to the core focus of the book, image, it looks at the latest generations of generative AI and how they can give the artist on one hand variability to allow for unexpected outcomes or happy accidents, and with the other have a degree of predictability so they can head towards a specific outcome. The space between a textual description and a visual counterpart. In the final section the lens focuses tightly on the artist and image creation, sharing examples of image generation and artists who are using the technology pushing the envelope. It is here I felt the author can be overly optimistic on the positive potentials that generative AI can bring. While these are many and very exciting, there is a missed opportunity round the discussion more deeply with the issues that many have with generative AI. These are less about how it is used and who gets to call themselves an artist, and more about the ethics of how the training data that the systems are built upon is gathered or scraped, the bias that data can bring, and issues of copyright and authorship. As a lecturer and an artist who uses generative AI in my own practice, overall I found the book informative and agree with the author and the Centaur model he discusses. Collaboration between natural and artificial intelligence, the back and forth of ideas and the iterative process, has the potential to enhance rather than replace human creativity. Author's Biography Dr. Remo Pareschi is an expert in this field, obtaining a doctorate in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinbur...

Essay, Deck and Transcript can be found at https://www.letusthinkaboutit.com/step-82-art-and-ai/The Future of Art and AI: Promises and PerilsArtificial intelligence (AI) has exploded onto the cultural scene, raising pressing questions about the role of technology in art and society. Artist and thinker Ryder Richards recently gave a lecture analyzing AI through a philosophical lens, exploring its potential promises and perils.Understanding AI AdoptionRichards began by taking the pulse of AI adoption, finding about a quarter to a third of attendees actively using AI for creative pursuits. With hype swirling, many came curious to know more. Richards set forth to report his findings from the AI landscape.Weaving history, art, and philosophy, Richards traced how we arrived at this crossroads. He discussed early 20th-century visions of fusing humans and machines, driven by the worship of progress, machinery, and speed. Richards questioned assumptions of human rationality and effectiveness, asking if AI necessarily leads to worse outcomes. The Allure and Alienation of AIRichards suggested that while AI promises to democratize creativity, it may also distance us from the personal touch of craft. He demonstrated how artists employ AI to generate variations and select results. While convenient, this process mediates the human-object bond. Richards pondered if submissions lack an imprint of humanity itself.Reckoning with BiasExamining racial and gender bias in AI datasets, Richards noted the need to peer inside “black box” algorithms. He considered whether language models actually “think” creatively. While founders exude optimism, their infighting hardly inspires confidence. With AI infiltrating emotional resonance and politics, vigilance seems vital. The Sentient Machine?Richards explored speculation that glitches enable AI creativity, just as neurological differences may have sparked human innovation. He discussed AI's potential for independent evolution, questioning our ability to discern machine consciousness. If the future remains opaque, Richards suggested artists' role is to absorb and share cultural truths.Owning Our CreationsLawsuits against AI companies form growing resistance. But will profit motives trump ethics? How do we balance an accelerating economy with human dignity? As the lines blur between creator and creation, now is the time to ponder what kind of future we want to code.

In today's episode, we're speaking with Edouard Gouin, CEO & Co-Founder of Convelio, an art logistics platform that has raised $44 Million in funding. Here are the most Interesting points from the conversation: Rocket Internet Experience: Edouard shares how working at Rocket Internet emphasized the importance of execution over strategy, highlighting the value of strong purpose-driven work beyond just profitability. Identifying a Market Gap: The inspiration for Convelio came from the frustration of dealing with inefficient and costly fine art shipping processes, leading to the creation of a FedEx-like solution for the art market. Navigating a Traditional Market: Edouard discusses the challenges and gradual approach Convelio took to break into the conservative art market, starting with antique dealers and progressively moving to larger clients. Expansion and Acquisition: Convelio's strategic acquisition in the UK aimed to consolidate their presence and enhance their capability to handle high-value shipments, bridging gaps in their service offerings. Impact of COVID and NFTs: The pandemic and the rise of NFTs brought new buyers into the art market, expanding its size and visibility. Edouard believes physical art will continue to coexist with digital art. Future Vision: Edouard envisions Convelio expanding geographically and developing more digital tools to streamline art logistics, aiming to move the art industry forward.

Matt Semke, the artist behind Catswilleatyou joins me on the show. Matt is an amazing multidisciplinary artist who has potentially the longest running daily art streak of any artist on the planet, with over 6000 days straight of posting his new art pieces online. He's a VR artist, AR artist, digital artist, physical artist/painter, NFT Artist, and so much more. He works to really push the boundaries on art and tools that can be used for art. He has created his own art metaverse with I believe somewhere around 1-10% of his collection available to look at (and interact with to purchase) in an art metaverse that is like being inside one of his paintings. He has physical pieces to NFT pieces, and NFTs that he sends you physical pieces with that have AR/Animation/music elements on them. We asked ChatGPT: “Tell me about the future of Visual Art and AI.” ChatGPT response: Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an increasingly popular tool in the field of art, with artists and technologists exploring the potential of machine learning algorithms to generate and manipulate images, music, and other creative works. AI applications can assist visual artists in creating art, improving their workflow, and exploring new creative possibilities. We asked ChatGPT: “Tell me about DALL_E.” ChatGPT response: DALL-E is a state-of-the-art AI language model developed by OpenAI that can generate images from textual descriptions. The name “DALL-E” is a combination of the artist Salvador Dali and the Pixar character WALL-E. With DALL-E, users can input textual descriptions of objects, scenes, or even abstract concepts, and the AI will generate a corresponding image. We asked ChatGPT: “Send me quotes about artists from fictional characters in real movies.” ChatGPT response: – “Every artist has their own unique voice. It's our duty to let it out and let it be heard.” [A Star is Born, 2018] – “The purpose of art is to provoke, to challenge, and to make people feel something they've never felt before.” [Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, 2011] – “I don't want to be just a painter; I want to be Van Gogh.” [The Goldfinch, 2019] – “Artists have to be selfish sometimes, right? Gotta do what you gotta do to create something special.” [We Are Your Friends, 2015] We'll ask Sandy Davies, Ursula Wong, S.A. Grant, Nicky Jurd, and Morgan O'Donnell for their take on The Future of Art and AI: What Would Dali, Rembrandt, Picasso, Van Gogh, Matisse and Pollock Say?

In this episode I talk about how creatives and artists can handle our anxieties around what the future holds as AI-generated art gluts up the system and decreases space for our own art. I include some thoughts on what we as real humans can offer that AI can't, and how that will change what we view as art and the location of where we find value in the process of making art.Jane Friedman's websiteMy blog post about sharing your processTranscriptContact meWould You Like to Support My Work?Sign up for my newsletter!Buy me a coffee! Each and every original oil painting is a moment captured by the artist of a remote location discovered by Baumann on his countless journies deep into the American wilderness. Through his keen eye and the steady trained hand of a master painter, Baumann painstakingly recreates the moment that he himself experiences, captured on the canvas first on location, and then finished or recreated back in his studio located on his private ranch in Mt Shasta California. Baumann's plein-air paintings include amazing effects of light, shadow, color, and the natural beauty that he sees in American wilderness landscapes, wildlife, and the architectural styles of older houses and barns.  Through his work, viewers enjoy the opportunity to see spectacular places in America that are too remote and inaccessible for most to visit themselves.  Baumann's painting style has been classified by art collectors and galleries as “Romantic Realism with Luminicsm.” Pioneers of this beautiful genre of landscape painting include Frederic Church, Thomas Cole,  and Albert Bierstadt of the Hudson River School.  They were East Coast artists who journeyed to the Western United States to sketch and paint amazing views of the American wilderness, and then they returned to their home studios to paint stunning detailed versions of these vistas on room-sized canvases. Similarly,  Stefan Baumann reveals the true spirit of nature by transporting the viewer to distant lands that have gone unseen and undisturbed on his canvases. Baumann's passion for painting is fueled by his fascination with and close observation of nature's sublime beauty and mood.  Baumann's paintings speak for themselves ~ elegant and mysterious, exciting and bold, every landscape and wildlife painting captures Support the showFor more information go to www.StefanBaumann.com https://www.stefanbaumann.com/Free Book For painting, coaching call me on my phone at 415-606-9074

On this episode of “Death in The Garden”, we are sharing a reading of our recent Substack piece entitled The Terrible and the Tantalizing: Grappling with AI, Machine Learning, and the Future of Art, where we discuss the emergence of AI “art” and the ramifications it is having for artists. In this essay, we discuss what art is and isn't, and whether or not we're comfortable with the definition being subsumed by “machines and the unaccountable corporations at their helms.” We talk about Luddism, and how AI “art” threatens to render artists redundant, just as factories rendered the Luddites, artisanal weavers, redundant, and how we ought to reclaim that oft misunderstood and maligned title. We talk about shifting baseline syndrome, and how, as a culture, we've gotten used to the cheapened version of everything; from food, to furniture, to art itself. In the end, we talk about the grief for all that the machine takes from us, and call for all of us to stand up for what we still have left: human creativity, and human-made art. Until very recently, female artists have occupied a tiny space of the art market, undervalued and ignored. There are no women in the top 0.03% of the auction market, where 41% of the profit is concentrated. Overall, 96.1% of artworks sold at auction are by male artists. The most expensive work sold by a woman artist at auction, Georgia O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1, sold in 2014 for $44.4 million—over four hundred million dollars less than the auction record for a male artist: Leonardo Da Vinci's Salvator Mundi, which sold in 2017 for $450.3 million, shattering the previous record of $179.4 million for a work by Picasso.  Now that's changing. This year's Venice Biennale was heavily skewed in favour of women for the first time ever. Historically, about 10% of artists in the main exhibition have tended to be women, rising to 30% in recent years; in 2019, the UK-based curator Ralph Rugoff's exhibition achieved rough parity for the first time. Cecilia Alemani, curator of the 2022 Biennale, included approximately 90% female and gender non-conforming artists.  Who is driving this change? And how do we continue to make sure the work of female artists is given the recognition they deserve?
