For this one, my friend and brother Fabrice Gaëtan joined me to discuss what it takes to make it as a photographer today, what it's like to go to extreme or great distances to tell a story, and how much things have evolved in the past 30 years. We first met while working at Astral Photo, a photo store in Brossard, on the South Shore of Montreal, Canada. Our paths diverged, but ever brothers, we've kept in touch all these years. Welcome to the Denver Public Schools MyTech Podcast! In this fourth episode of the season, we're talking about chromebooks. These touchscreen laptops use Google's Chrome operating system, and they form the backbone of DPS' MyTech program, which provides computers to district students in all grades kindergarten through 12th. The MyTech program works with all DPS-managed schools to make sure all students have access to a computer in and out of the classroom, as well as opportunities to use them meaningfully. In this episode, we talk to staff and students at two Denver elementary schools, Asbury and Ellis. At both schools, second through fifth graders have been taking their computers home and bringing them back to school, every day, for years. Asbury and Ellis are leading the way for other DPS elementaries, as a significant change is coming to the district. Beginning fourth quarter, students in grades 2 or above at all DPS-run schools will be able to take their computers home to explore, finish school work, and extend their learning. Original broadcast date May 14, 2020. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2020/05/binary-system-podcast-221/ No Night Vale episode to recap, so this week we tried something different. We both said we were going to watch something that's been on our to-do list...and then we watched them. So Kathryn watched the 2007 movie Sunshine https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448134/ (written by Alex Garland) and Elizabeth watched the first episode of Devs (written and directed by Alex Garland, can you see a theme here?), and we took some digressions to mention the TV shows Lucifer and Deadwood and fangirled all over the place about a webcomic Elizabeth found called Lore Olympus. https://www.webtoons.com/en/romance/lore-olympus/episode-1/viewer?title_no=1320&episode_no=1 This week's outro music is a clip from Runner by Six Umbrellas (which we used waaaay back on episode 105, but we like it so we're using it again.) https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Six_Umbrellas/The_Psychadelic_And/1_Six_Umbrellas_-_Runner Correction: the guy we were trying to think of in the Devs show is, of course, Nick Offerman, who played the meat-loving Ron Swanson in Parks and Recreation, which is why it's so hilarious to see him chowing down on a salad in Devs. https://youtu.be/r1kP93U3unk
Original broadcast date November 28, 2019. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2019/11/binary-system-podcast-201-wtnv-158-the-war-for-time/ The three-part Night Vale story of cryogenics and robots comes to a close this week, with an ending that was surprising, abrupt, and intensely creepy. We loved it. (Probably goes without saying but just in case SPOILERS AHOY!) After the recap we debriefed on this year's DesignerCon, and the final few days of Kathryn's #DragonFall drawing challenge. This week's outro music is a clip from Asset House by Six Umbrellas. https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Six_Umbrellas/Private_Ark/07_Six_Umbrellas_-_Asset_House The first DesignerCon 2019 photo gallery by Elizabeth is here https://pixelatedgeek.com/2019/11/designercon-2019-photo-gallery-1/, and the second photo gallery by Stephanie is here. https://pixelatedgeek.com/2019/11/designercon-2019-photo-gallery-2/ You can find the info on Kathryn's #Dragonfall drawing challenge here! https://www.instagram.com/p/B4TH9MnhrvT/
Original broadcast date April 11, 2019. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2019/04/binary-system-podcast-172-welcome-to-night-vale-145-the-veterans/ We learn a little more about an ongoing conflict rocketing across time and space in this week's episode, as Night Vale welcomes home several returning soldiers from the Blood Space War. Among other things, we find out that the attackers are the Polonians from star system Lakaia 9352, our allies are Beings of Astonishing Structure from Battle Station Wolfgang, and John Peters (you know, the farmer) and his brother Jim had a father who was awesome. Fair warning, the creators of Night Vale drew some parallels in this episode with our own country's treatment of veterans and it's NOT SUBTLE. It's also not wrong. In order to lighten things up after the recap we switched over to (deep breath): the Hugo Nominees https://pixelatedgeek.com/2019/04/2019-hugo-awards-the-finalists/#more-151731 (Catherynne Valente and Lindsay Ellis, yay!), an idea for a work of team fiction, the movie Annihilation, the Zero Punctuation video game reviews, photo galleries from Wondercon, and catching a cold at Wondercon. Cough. This week's outro music is a clip from Transition by Six Umbrellas http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Six_Umbrellas/Private_Ark/02_Six_Umbrellas_-_Transition?fbclid=IwAR2wbLNeF3K2RN-_xvy0duFOYtAEKBIMrz3dKMvWfX1moOpBa-i4odIWafY The first part of Lindsay Ellis's Hobbit duology (in three parts) can be found here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTRUQ-RKfUs&t=471s
Original broadcast date November 23, 2017. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2017/11/binary-system-podcast-105-wtnv-118-egemony-part-2-the-cave-lands/ Happy Thanksgiving everyone! To celebrate, here's a podcast where we don't mention Thanksgiving EVEN ONE TIME. Yes, all right, we forgot this episode drops on Thanksgiving. But we are grateful for a lot of things, in addition to family and friends and happiness and health: for a Night Vale episode that did this folding-in-on-itself thing with the plot, for Neil Gaiman and American Gods, for Thor Ragnarok and Tom Hiddleston, for Twin Peaks, Let the Right One In, Stranger Things, and for you because you read this whole description. You rock. Today's outro song is a clip from Runner by Six Umbrellas. http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Six_Umbrellas/The_Psychadelic_And/1_Six_Umbrellas_-_Runner For anyone keeping track at home, Kathryn needs to watch: Thor-Ragnarok, American Gods, Stranger Things Season 2, and the last of The Defenders. Elizabeth needs to watch Twin Peaks, Let the Right One In, and Mr Robot season 2 and three.
Original broadcast date Octobetr 12, 2017. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2017/10/binary-system-podcast-99-wtnv-114-and-115-council-member-flynn/ After hurricanes and cross country trips we managed to catch up in one fell swoop by recapping Welcome To Night Vale episodes 114 AND 115, and still managed to fit in thoughts on Wonder Woman, Blade Runner, Mad Max, Train To Busan, World War Z, and that guy who cosplayed as a building. Outro song this week is 90 seconds of Zombie Disco by Six Umbrellas. http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Six_Umbrellas/The_Psychadelic_And/6_Six_Umbrellas_-_Zombie_Disco Here's the original photo by @franksquatch we mentioned, https://www.instagram.com/p/BZ9Kh00FtUD/?taken-by=franksquatch reposting it got us a lot of views so please help us thank him giving him a like.
