Before the ballpoint pen, people used their hands, reeds, bamboo, brushes, quills, and eventually nibs to write or draw. The Temple of Surf Podcast – This Week's Guest: Alessandro Piu – Italian Surfing Champion, Waterman, and Global Ambassador of Mediterranean Surf Culture This week on The Temple of Surf Podcast, we are honored to welcome one of Italy's finest surfers and a true ambassador of European surfing Alessandro Piu. Hailing from the sunny shores of Sardinia, Alessandro has carved out a remarkable path in professional surfing, breaking boundaries and making history as one of Italy's most decorated and recognizable surf athletes. With a fearless approach to the ocean, a deep respect for the environment, and a hunger for powerful waves around the globe, Alessandro embodies the spirit of the modern waterman. From Mediterranean breaks to the hollow reefs of Indonesia, from the rugged coastlines of Ireland to the barrels of Tahiti, he has proven that you don't need to be born in Hawaii or Australia to be world-class. Alessandro's story is one of determination, adaptability, and passion. Growing up in a country where surfing was still a niche sport, he discovered the ocean at a young age and quickly fell in love with the rhythm of the waves. Sardinia's varied coastline, ranging from wind-swept beach breaks to slabby reefs, became his training ground. With limited resources and exposure compared to surfers in California or Australia, Alessandro pushed himself hard, rising through the ranks with raw talent and tireless dedication. He quickly caught the attention of the European surf scene, earning titles at both national and international levels. Over the years, he became Italian Champion, represented Italy in ISA World Surfing Games and WSL Qualifying Series events, and participated in prestigious contests. His powerful, expressive style, especially in heavier surf, set him apart. Whether drawing sharp lines on a six-foot point break or charging thick barrels, Alessandro has consistently proven himself as one of the most complete surfers to ever emerge from Italy. But Alessandro is more than just a competitor, he's also a true explorer and surf culture storyteller. He has traveled extensively, surfed some of the most remote and challenging waves in the world, and helped shed light on Italy's unique surf geography. In recent years, he's taken on a role as an environmental advocate, using his platform to speak out about ocean conservation, pollution, and the preservation of coastal ecosystems. His involvement in sustainable surfboard initiatives and support of grassroots surf communities reflect his deep commitment to the planet and to future generations of surfers. On social media and in person, Alessandro has become a role model for aspiring surfers across Europe. His down-to-earth character, humility, and passion for wave riding resonate with fans from every background. He regularly collaborates with major surf brands, independent filmmakers, and ocean-focused nonprofits to amplify the message of connection between sport and sustainability. In this exclusive conversation with The Temple of Surf, Alessandro opens up about his early days surfing in Sardinia, the challenges he faced building a pro career from Italy, and his favorite destinations across the world. We also dive into his mindset during competitions, how he stays motivated during off-seasons, and what it feels like to represent his country on an international stage. Plus, he shares insights on the evolution of the Mediterranean surf scene, the importance of culture in surfing, and the legacy he hopes to leave. Whether you're a surfer from the coast of Biarritz, in Hawaii, or someone paddling out for the first time in Italy, Alessandro Piu's story is an inspiration. His journey proves that passion, grit, and respect for the ocean can take you to incredible places, even when you come from a country without a long-standing surf tradition. Tune in to this week's episode of The Temple of Surf Podcast for a raw, insightful, and powerful chat with one of Europe's top surfing voices. Alessandro Piu reminds us all that the soul of surfing knows no borders and that wherever there are waves and a deep love for the ocean, greatness can be found.

Tim Burnham does a lot of things… and much of his life has been influenced by his decades of focusing his attention on one of the heaviest and most notorious waves on the planet. The Wedge. The Wedge is an iconic beast of a wave in Newport Beach, CA and when it's big it is one of the heaviest, most dangerous… and most mesmerizing waves out there. Are there bigger waves? Yes. Are there more dangerous waves? Maybe. Is the Wedge capable of killing you? Absolutely. Tim is part of the Wedge Crew; a community of “characters” that has made their focus the mastery of this mutant of a wave. And Tim tackles it on all craft: bodysurfing, surfing, bodyboarding, knee boarding and even on a surf mat. It's amazing to watch truly skilled watermen and women, like Tim, wrangle this wave and make it look “fun.” Most people, myself absolutely included, have watched the Wedge for most of my life… from the beach. That's where most humans belong. In addition to his exploits in waves of consequence, Tim is also a jack of many trades: a filmmaker, a lifeguard, a board member of the Ben Carlson Foundation, a surf movie presenter, a CO2 tolerance instructor, a husband and… a grandpa. Tim is rad. You'll enjoy this one for sure.

Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 13ú lá de mí Bealtaine, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1972 gabhadh garda nach raibh ar dualgas ó Bhaile Átha Cliath agus seisear fear eile chuig Bridewell tar éis a rinne bleachtaire ruathar. I 1983 tháinig an nuacht amach go mbeadh pionós ann cosúil le tréimhse phríosúnachta do dhaoine ag tiomáint agus iad ar a ghuthán. I 1972 thosaigh siad ag seiceáil na bosca ballóide ag an reifreann agus thosaigh sé ag 9 ar maidin ag an scoil in Inis. Bhí sé soiléir gur rinne an chontae vótáil ar son an EEC. I 1983 rinne comhairle contae an Chláir níos mó iarracht ina bhfeachtas chun níos mó aird a tharraing ar an droch-chor den PAYE/PRSI nuair a bhí agóid ar siúil. Sin Gwen Stefani le Hollaback Girl – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 2005. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1989 chuaigh Kylie Minogue chuig uimhir a haon sa Bhreatain don dara huair leis an amhrán Hand On Your Heart. Bhí sé scríofa ó Stock, Aitken & Waterman. I 2003 bhí cás cúirte ag Michael Jackson mar bhí sé chun an dlí a chur ar Motown Records. Thóg sé cás dlí in LA agus dúirt sé nach bhfuair sé aon airgead don amhrán a rinne sé leis The Jackson Five sna 60dí agus 70dí. Tháinig Michael Jackson amach agus dúirt sé gur úsáid siad a amhráin ar an teilifís gan cead. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh amhránaí Morgan Wallen I Meiriceá I 1993 agus rugadh aisteoir Robert Pattinson sa Bhreatain ar an lá seo I 1986 agus seo chuid de na rudaí a rinne sé. Beidh mé ar ais libh amárach le heagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 13th of May, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh 1972: an offduty garda who was stationed in dublin and 6 other men were taken to the Bridewell after a swoop by special branch detectives yesterday 1983: Stiff penalties including jail sentences were on the way for telephone tapping. 1972: There was a checking of ballot boxes in the referendum which started at 9am in the technical school, Ennis on thursday. It was clear that clare people had voted overwhemingly in favour of EEC entry. 1983: Clare council of trade unions this week stepped up their campaign to highlight the plight of the PAYE/PRSI sector when they staged a protest in the Co.Council chamber on Monday evening. That was Gwen Stefani with Hollaback Girl – the biggest song on this day in 2005 Onto music news on this day In 1989 Kylie Minogue was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with her second solo No.1 'Hand On Your Heart.' The song was written and produced by Stock, Aitken & Waterman. 2003 Michael Jackson launched a court case suing Motown Records. Jacko filed the lawsuit in LA, saying he hadn't been paid royalties due for the music he did with the Jackson Five in the 60s and 70s. The singer also claimed his music has been used in TV ads without his permission. And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – singer Morgan Wallen was born in America in 1993 and actor Robert Pattinson was born in the UK on this day in 1986 and this is some of the stuff he has done. I'll be back with you tomorrow with another edition of Ar An Lá Seo.

After serving for nearly 18 months as the Department of Defense's first-ever customer experience officer in the Office of the CIO, Savan Kong earlier this month parted ways with the Pentagon. Previously a member of the Defense Digital Service during his first tour of duty with the DOD, Kong helped build the department's CXO office from scratch, fostering a culture that prioritizes the needs of service members, civilians, and mission partners and striving to streamline governance processes, improve transparency, and ensure that IT solutions meet operational needs. Kong joins the Daily Scoop for a conversation to share the progress his office ushered in to improve customer experience for DOD's personnel, where things are headed under this administration and how AI will impact the CX space. FedRAMP is getting another overhaul, one that will involve far more automation and a greater role for the private sector, the program's chief announced Monday. Through FedRAMP 20x, the General Services Administration-based team focused on the program aims to simplify the authorization process and reduce the amount of time needed to approve a service from months to weeks, Director Pete Waterman said during an Alliance for Digital Innovation event. The private sector will also have increased responsibility over monitoring of their systems, he noted. In a critical change, agency sponsorship will — eventually — no longer be necessary to win authorization. As a first step, FedRAMP has launched four community working groups, which give the public a chance to share feedback, and focus on creating “innovative solutions” to formalize the program's standards. But in the meantime, Waterman said existing baselines will remain in place and there are no immediate changes to the program. The Office of Personnel Management and the departments of Treasury and Education are now barred from sharing individuals' personally identifiable information with DOGE representatives, a federal judge ruled Monday. Judge Deborah L. Boardman of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland said in her decision that in granting associates with Elon Musk's so-called government efficiency initiative access to systems containing plaintiffs' PII, the agencies “likely violated” the Privacy Act and the Administrative Procedure Act. The lawsuit was filed by the American Federation of Teachers, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, the National Federation of Federal Employees, and six military veterans. The "Gilgo Four" refers to four women—Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello—whose remains were discovered in December 2010 near Gilgo Beach on Long Island, New York. These women, who were sex workers advertising services online, went missing between 2007 and 2010. Their bodies were found within a quarter-mile of each other, wrapped in burlap, suggesting the work of a serial killer.Rex Heuermann, a 59-year-old architect from Massapequa Park, Long Island, was arrested in July 2023 in connection with these murders. He has been charged with multiple counts of first- and second-degree murder related to the deaths of Barthelemy, Waterman, and Costello, and is the prime suspect in Brainard-Barnes' death. Investigations linked Heuermann to the crimes through cellphone records, online searches, and DNA evidence obtained from a discarded pizza crust matching DNA found on one victim. Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to all charges.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

Jon Waterman is a former park ranger, wilderness guide, and a prolific author of books on adventure, exploration, and the environment. In this episode of Nature Revisited, Jon recounts his decades-long history of explorations of the Alaskan Arctic. Having returned to the Noatak headwaters after 30 years in 2021, Waterman was shocked by the environmental and cultural changes wrought by the climate crisis. As in his book 'Into the Thaw', Waterman paints for our listeners an intimate portrait of both the villages and the little-visited landscape, suggesting actions we can all take to slow the thaw and preserve what is left of the remarkable, vast Arctic frontier. Elizabeth Boleyn, Countess of Wiltshire is famous as the mother of Queen Anne Boleyn, and yet Elizabeth herself remains an extremely elusive figure. So much of her story is unknown, which is why I was so excited to learn that the very first book about Elizabeth Boleyn has been written and will be released later this year. I am thrilled to say that the books author, Sophie Bacchus Waterman is this weeks podcast guest. She joins me to discuss this fascinating but hugely overlooked figure, and although much still remains unknown, Sophie has discovered some new insights which do help us piece together something of who this woman was, so join Sophie and I as we explore the life of this remarkable woman, the mother of England's most infamous queen consort.
The Church & State podcast features Assemblywoman Latrice Walker and Rev. Dr. Robert Waterman, the pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Brooklyn. Waterman and Walker had spoken for years about doing a podcast together. Each has very strong opinions -- about everything. Some people don't talk about religion and politics at the dinner table. Some don't talk about religion and politics at the barbershop. But Walker and Waterman talk about it on their weeklyn podcast. Nothing is off-limits.https://www.youtube.com/@ChurchandState400
Mountaineer Jon Waterman first journeyed to the High Arctic in 1983, intent on learning all he could about the strange land with grizzlies and caribou, sea fossil-filled mountains and night skies with “saffron clouds and beams of viridescence.” Waterman has returned more than 20 times since then, and in a new book he documents the environmental changes he witnessed. We talk to him about the world above the Arctic Circle and how the climate crisis is transforming it. His book is “Into the Thaw.” http://jonathanwaterman.com Guests: Jon Waterman, author, “Into the Thaw: Witnessing Wonder Amid the Arctic Climate Crisis”; former Denali National Park ranger. His other books include National Geographic's “Atlas of the National Parks" and "In the Shadow of Denali."
