People often describe Milwaukee as a small city with big city amenities … and they are often talking about our theater and arts scene. And this includes the incredible opportunities children have in the theater as well. This week, I talk with Harmonie Baker, Executive Director of the Milwaukee Youth Theatre, about the important role that theater plays in the lives of the Milwaukee youth she serves. The Milwaukee Youth Theatre provides the opportunity for kids to imagine, build and create productions from start to finish in set design, costume and lighting as well as acting. More than a stage, it's a place where everyone belongs, everyone is family, and everyone is encouraged to support each other as they learn the ins and outs of theater. Locals and Links we love! Website: https://milwaukeeyouththeatre.org/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/milwaukeeyouththeatreInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/milwaukeeyouththeatre/UPCOMING EVENTSI Never Saw Another Butterfly and The Terezin PromiseMay 3-5, 2024 (various times)Ticket link: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/myt/1212748Lost Tales 2: Loster TalesJune 14-16, 2024More info: https://milwaukeeyouththeatre.org/lost-tales-2/Show your love for Cream City DreamsIf you haven't already, be sure to follow Cream City Dreams on Facebook and Instagram. Delighted to welcome Actress & Director Joanne Howarth to "The Good Listening To Show" Clearing. With many a Theatre & TV banger to her name, having performed at most of the major theatres in the land.  Including 3 seasons at the RSC, one highlight of which was "The Alchemist" with Hugh Bonneville & David Bradley. She also played on TV opposite Sir Kenneth Branagh in "Wallander".And we have history! Joanne and I met way back when at the Salisbury Playhouse in a production of "Custer's Last Stand", directed by previous Show Guest, Lucy Pitman Wallace.Suffused with theatrical anecdotes and inspirations aplenty, Jo talks about  her personal ritual (for the last 20 years) of always finding solace and her 'serious happy place' in her "Morning Pages", a practice derived from Julia Cameron's "The Artist's Way.  With treks through the South Downs near her home town of Brighton becoming her Clearing and her creative lab for untangling thoughts and mastering monologues. We also venture into the rehearsal room, where the chemistry of artists & theatre companies like Complicité and Told By An Idiot ignite Joanne's craft, blending the physical with the poetic to create theatre that resonates long after the curtain falls.Tales of inspiration, resilience, and the occasional happy distraction adorn this episode, painting a portrait of a life dedicated to the stage and to the magic and the sense of rich community that it can bring. She pays tribute to her fellow community of Globe Education Practitioners (GEPs) for their unwavering support and inspiration in all that she does in her work.  Jo also delves into the societal impact of theatre and considers the enduring legacy of storytelling as a reflective mirror to our worldA wonderful and rich episode indeed! You can also Watch/Listen to Joanne Howarth's episode here: https://vimeo.com/chrisgrimes/joannehowarthTune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Scott sits down with a former student, Zoe Seare, for a engaging conversation about Zoe's pathway towards higher education at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and making the decision to transfer in her sophomore year from the BFA in Musical Theatre Performance to their unique BFA in Theatre Teaching, and the many revelations in college that brought her to a new sense of purpose, action and confidence. Zoe studied Musical Theatre at OCSA and performed in productions of Quilters (that was also presented at the 2020 International Thespian Festival) As You Like It, 10th Street Follies ,she was a a frequent participant in Classroom Cabaret & Cabaret for a Cause, and in 3 different Performing with the Pros concerts with Jessica Vosk, Megan McGinnis and David Burnham.  At the University of Utah recently worked on Seussical TYA with Youth Theatre at the U (as an assistant director and u/s for The Cat in the Hat)- a really unique program at the University of Utah that allows the department university students to have an additional performance opportunities and mentor young people all while working with their community program.Zoe Seare wants to use her love and passion for theatre to teach new generations of students about empathy & acceptance through theatre arts in either High School and/or a community theatre. She advocates for accessible theatre and making sure that ALL students feel safe and comfortable to take risks and try new things in the theatre space. In this episode, we talk about the many assets of what studying both theatre and education have brought Zoe, the hurdles and logistics of what to do once you've decided to transfer to a different program within a university, the unique overlap of interests between psychology, cosmetology and musical theatre, how the Western Undergraduate Exchange is helping to make her college experience more affordable, and the tactics Zoe has found to defuse the (all-to-common) comparison mindset of her 17-year old self to find her clear sense of her own mission and confidence.
