We go on a tour around the county from Exeter to Plymouth, North Devon to Torbay and East Devon to Teignbridge to see what our councillors make of it all. How will it impact services for residents day to day? How many unitary councils in Devon could be in charge of bins collections, children's services, how many homes are built and where and pothole repairs? Will there be more money for our urban and rural communities and a seat at the top table for a large strategic authority with an elected mayor covering the South West? We delve into these questions and more on the latest Devoncast. Plus is train travel for Devon residents going off the rails?. . . the county's trains to Paddington could see more problems in years to come with ongoing works to HS2 near the capital causing potential delays and less frequent services. MPs and councillors want a robust mitigation plan put in place. It's all in the new Devoncast, from Radio Exe and the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The programme is available for LDRS partners to use in full or in part.

fWotD Episode 2691: Jeremy Thorpe Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 16 September 2024 is Jeremy Thorpe.John Jeremy Thorpe (29 April 1929 – 4 December 2014) was a British politician who served as the Member of Parliament for North Devon from 1959 to 1979, and as leader of the Liberal Party from 1967 to 1976. In May 1979 he was tried at the Old Bailey on charges of conspiracy and incitement to murder his ex-boyfriend Norman Scott, a former model. Thorpe was acquitted on all charges, but the case, and the furore surrounding it, ended his political career.Thorpe was the son and grandson of Conservative MPs, but decided to align with the small and ailing Liberal Party. After reading Law at Oxford University he became one of the Liberals' brightest stars in the 1950s. He entered Parliament at the age of 30, rapidly made his mark, and was elected party leader in 1967. After an uncertain start during which the party lost ground, Thorpe capitalised on the growing unpopularity of the Conservative and Labour parties to lead the Liberals through a period of electoral success. This culminated in the general election of February 1974, when the party won 6 million votes. Under the first-past-the-post electoral system this gave them only 14 seats, but in a hung parliament, no party having an overall majority, Thorpe was in a strong position. He was offered a cabinet post by the Conservative prime minister, Edward Heath, if he would bring the Liberals into a coalition. His price for such a deal, reform of the electoral system, was rejected by Heath, who resigned in favour of a minority Labour government. The February 1974 election was the high-water mark of Thorpe's career. Thereafter his and his party's fortunes declined, particularly from late 1975 when rumours of his involvement in a plot to murder Norman Scott began to multiply. Thorpe resigned the leadership in May 1976 when his position became untenable. When the matter came to court three years later, Thorpe chose not to give evidence to avoid being cross-examined by counsel for the prosecution. This left many questions unanswered; despite his acquittal, Thorpe was discredited and did not return to public life. From the mid-1980s he was disabled by Parkinson's disease. During his long retirement he gradually recovered the affections of his party, and by the time of his death was honoured by a later generation of leaders, who drew attention to his record as an internationalist, a supporter of human rights and an opponent of apartheid and all forms of racism. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:27 UTC on Monday, 16 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Jeremy Thorpe on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Kimberly.

We are extraordinarily grateful that historian and biographer Dr. Helen Fry made time for us right as her latest book Women in Intelligence: The Hidden History of Two World Wars was released in the UK and is poised to launch in the United States.  This new book is filled with intrigue hidden in plain sight. Spies recruited at cafés, ordinary women bicycling around town passing along messages to help the Allies, secret codes knit into jumpers (that's the British English word for what we Americans call sweaters). Helen Fry has authored too many popular books to count. These include: The London Cage, The Walls Have Ears, MI9, Spymaster: The Man who Saved M16 and more than twenty books on intelligence, prisoners of war, and the social history of World War II. She appears regularly in media interviews and podcasts and has been involved in numerous documentaries. Here's the official, delicious description of Women in Intelligence: “In this major, panoramic history, Helen Fry looks at the rich and varied work women undertook as civilians and in uniform. From spies who worked for the Belgian network ‘La Dame Blanche', knitting coded messages into jumpers, to those who interpreted aerial images and even ran entire sections, Fry shows just how crucial women were in the intelligence mission.” Nigel West, author of Spies Who Changed History described Women in Intelligence as “A fascinating, minutely researched study of women in the espionage business.” And Clare Mulley, author of The Spy Who Loved, warns us: “Beware – this is a book full of danger and deception, sabotage and secret codes, and some brilliant, unstoppable women.  “This account is long overdue. Helen Fry redresses the relative neglect of the contribution of women as intelligence officer and agents during and between the two world wars, with gripping personal stories of bravery, grit and analytic brilliance.”—Sir David Omand GCB, former Director of GCHQ Helen Fry was raised in North Devon and went on to graduate from the University of Exeter with a degree and Ph.D. The focus of her (okay, we've counted now. It's ) 25 books has been the 10,000 Germans and Austrians who fought for Britain, and intelligence, espionage and prisoners of war. Her highly acclaimed book The Walls Have Ears: The Greatest Intelligence Operation of WWII was in the top 8 Daily Mail's Books of the Year in War, and has been optioned for film.  Contact Booked Up: You can email Jen & the Booked Up team at: BOOKEDUP@POLITICON.COM or by writing to:  BOOKED UP  P.O. On this PPN Camera and Inspiration episode, Marco invited the inspiring photographer, author, and YouTuber Sean Tucker who has been on Marco's interview wishlist the longest and who has been requested to be a guest the most by PPN listeners. Sean was invited to this show because Marco had the feeling, that we all could use an inspirational jump-start right now, to get our creativity going and to either level up on current projects or to get inspired to start new photo projects.   This show is sponsored by MPB.com: www.MPB.com Inspirational Photographer of the Month: Sean picked Canadian-born photographer Joey Lawrence (Joey L.). Sean is impressed by how tasteful Joey creates his portraits and how meaningful his work is. Joey has some personal projects like the tribes of the Omo Valley in Ethiopia, the guerrilla fighters of Kurdistan, and Holy Men in India, where he mixes natural light and strobes to create very striking images. You can find out more about Joey L.'s work by visiting his website: http://joeyl.com Here are some behind-the-scenes videos of the three photo projects:: http://joeyl.com/onset/videos Motivation to pick up your camera and start new photo projects: In the main segment of this show, Sean shared different approaches to get in the right mindset to think about new projects or to level up on existing projects. Making friends with change and “embracing the suck” is part of the process, that helps us to explore and expand our mental, creative, and technical mindset for future photo projects. Inspirational Photo Book Pick of the Month: Sean's pick: “BYWAYS” Photographs by Roger A. Deakins. Sean is inspired by Rager A. Deakins as he is one of his favorite cinematographers who has done some of the most beautiful films of the last 20 years. Deakins' photos in this book are from rural North Devon and the neighboring seaside dating back as far as 1971. Sean likes the way Deakins frames his images with the same eye that he has when he composes his movies - but without the famous actors and lighting setup.  So it is like the purest version of his vision to Sean. The book is published by Thames & Hudson and has 160 pages Amazon US: amzn.to/43eROAq Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/43DNURv Marco's pick: “The Meaning in the Making (A Philosophy - for the Creative Life)” by Sean Tucker.   Author's description: This book contains personal stories interwoven with the psychological, philosophical, and spiritual practices which help me stay a mentally healthy, inspired, and motivated "maker of things." I may be known first and foremost as a photographer, but this book has been written for anyone who makes anything; from filmmakers to musicians, and from painters to writers. The Shout is a 1978 British horror film directed by Jerzy Skolimowski (who is also an Actor was in Mars Attacks and played a General in Marvels The Avengers). It was based on a short story by Robert Graves (author of I, Claudius and great friend of Spike Milligan, with whom, from the 1960s until his death, he frequently exchanged letters, Many of which are collected in the book ‘Dear Robert, Dear Spike') Grave's short story was adapted for the screen by Skolimowski and Michael Austin screenwriter of Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. The film was the first to be produced by Jeremy Thomas under his ‘Recorded Picture Company' banner. Thomas went on to produce and exec-produce 70 more films (to date) including Naked Lunch, The last Emperor, Crash, The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, Sexy Beast and High-rise.Interiors were shot at Pinewood Studios, the film's sets were designed by the art director Simon Holland (Quadrophenia, Buster, Nuns on the Run and King Ralph). The North Devon coastline, specifically Saunton Sands and Braunton Burrows, were used for the bulk of the location shooting. The church of St Peter in Westleigh was used for the church scenes. The soundtrack is by Michael Rutherford and Tony Banks of the rock band Genesis (After the original first choice of David Bowie turned it down). When heard in theatres in Dolby Stereo, it was aurally separating and distorting. Reportedly, forty different music tracks were used for the sound, when it was usual for films of this era to use just 4.The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival and received the Grand Prize of the Jury, in a tie with Bye Bye Monkey (A film staring Gérard Depardieu about a man who finds the corpse of King Kong and Kong's orphaned son, and takes it to a friend who lives in the city, and they decide to raise it.) Type 2 is a podcast from Looking Sideways in association with Patagonia that explores the intersection between the outdoors, action sports and activism. This week's guest is a surfer and activist Adam Hall. He's Head of Sustainability for Surfdome, a trustee for POW UK, and is part of the team that just successfully ran the campaign to have the North Devon coastline designated one of only 12 World Surfing Reserves in the world, putting this much loved corner of the British surf world on a par with places like Noosa, Malibu and Ericeira, All of which would be reason enough to have Adam on as a guest for Type 2. But Adam's story is really about how a passionate, driven individual has found a way of - yes - parlaying his own passions into positive actions on a wider scale. Which really is a key question when you get down to what it actually means to be an ‘activist'. How can we make it personal, yet impactful on a wider scale? How can we think big when we're starting small? After all, it can be overwhelming, especially in the face of the sheer scale of some of the challenges we face, to work out how to make a difference. This is a conundrum that Adam has cracked, both through the projects that personify his take on activism, and through his passion for surfing, which is really at the heart of all his work. For me, this is what Type 2 is really about: the chance to hear from passionate, articulate, fired-up people who are out there making a difference and calling it out for what it is. We recorded this one at the Wave in Bristol after a really fun surf (it won't surprise you to hear that Adam rips, by the way); and all-in-all it was a great day capped off by a brilliant, thought-provoking conversation with somebody who wears his principles on this sleeve and is out there making it happen in every way he can. New episodes of Type 2 are released every four weeks through my Looking Sideways channel.
