First up, a manager who finished his first 5 years as a boss with promotion to the National South before moving to a side now rivals for the National South title this season. Paul Wotton is clearly enjoying his new role and might just take Torquay United back up under their new ownership. Hoping to take inspiration from a reinvigorated Torquay, Banstead Athletic. After a very difficult year, new Chairman Gary Grabban is hopeful their pitch to the council will allow them to return to their traditional home and provide for the rebirth and growth of his historic club With the Non League Paper round-up Jon Couch, losing streaks ended, potential governing body swaps and managerial movements the big talking points. Plus what's to come in the weekend's Non League Paper.
Bursting onto the sceneAt 14 he was playing at Twickenham for England juniors, at 16 he was making his Argyle debut and at 44 he is still turning out on a Saturday for Plymouth True Blues.Lee Phillips packed a lot into a relatively short time at Argyle. He was thrust into the limelight as a teenager, becoming the youngest player to play for the club in 1996. A quick and powerful striker, it was clear to see why he was so quick to make an impression. He had to wait for his first goal, that came two years later, in one of the most famous matches of lower league football. Most people will have heard the story of goalkeeper Jimmy Glass saving Carlisle United in the final minute of the season. But not so many will be able to tell you that it was against Plymouth Argyle and the Pilgrims' scorer that day was 18-year-old Lee Phillips. A good quiz question answer. After leaving Argyle Lee became a fans' favourite at both Exeter City and Torquay United and was, unfortunately, a three-time play-off final runner up.This is the story of Lee Phillips.
“Both ends that is all…”Kevin Wills will forever go down as a legend of South West football. Maybe more fondly remembered by Truro City supporters for his double, scoring at both ends, in the FA Vase final triumph in 2007. But he also won promotions with both Torquay United and Plymouth Argyle.Joining the Greens in the late 90s, Willsy made his breakthrough in 1998 as an exciting forward. Despite never quite making it as a regular during his time at Home Park, he was an integral part of Paul Sturrock's centurions in 2001/02, playing 18 matches mainly away from home, as Argyle clinched promotion.A promotion with Torquay United two years later followed, and then four more in the White of Truro, he was a lucky omen wherever he went. This is the story of Kevin Wills.

Alex, once again marooned in England, found himself in dire need of a Mediterranean football fix. But where, and how? Thanks to Dave ‘The Gull', the answer was obvious: Bath City v Torquay United. Yes, a clash of The Romans v the club from the English Riviera, Torquay United. The palm trees fluttered, the sun shone, the ball left the ground and the Yellow Army kept up a racket despite the result going against them. To top it all SuperAl accurately predicted the weather. They don't make ‘em like this anymore. Bath City 1 Torquay United 0 was recorded at Twerton Park, Bath on Saturday 13 April 2024. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/footy-on-the-med/message
When will the prime minister call the next general election? What are levelling up and devolution actually doing for the hard-pressed communities of Devon? And how can we solve the problems stopping local families finding homes in their communities? All of these questions and more are on the table for the latest Devoncast, in which the regular presenters are joined by the leader of North Devon District Council, Cllr Ian Roome, who gives his view on a variety of subjects. Also on the agenda is the future of the big covid vaccination centre on the outskirts of Exeter, and the long-term prospects for under-pressure Torquay United.
It's the Easter weekend. That means two things, Easter Eggs and a Bank Holiday Football Bonanza. It starts at Huish Park today where Mark Cooper's table-toppers welcome Torquay United. Ian, Ben and Dave welcome Chris Wade from the excellent TorquayTalk to talk about the ongoing shenanigans at Plainmoor. We're not strong on maths (as you well know) so we give a very brief and amateur overview of the club accounts. Enjoy! If you have an idea for the website, want to contribute or just want to send us a message, feel free to email ian@gloverscast.co.uk. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Chris Brass (born 24 July 1975) is an English manager and former professional footballer, he who works in a senior recruitment role at Premier League club Nottingham Forest in a role across The Academy and First Team.[3] As a player, he was a defender in the Football League for Burnley, Torquay United, Halifax Town, York City and Bury. He also played non-league football for Harrogate Town, Southport and Hyde United. Between 2003 and 2004 at the age of 27 he was player/manager of York, he wouldn't return to management until 12 years later when he returned to Bury as manager. He has also worked on the coaching staff at Scunthorpe United, Torquay United and Wigan Athletic. Career Early career Born in Easington, County Durham, Brass began his career as a schoolboy at Ipswich Town before progressing through the youth system at Burnley as a trainee,[1] where he turned professional on 8 July 1993.[2] Burnley In 1994, Brass captained the Burnley A team as it won the Lancashire League. In need of first team experience, he joined Torquay United on loan in October 1994, playing seven league games in a two-month loan spell. Brass returned to Burnley, making his debut for them as a substitute in a 1–0 defeat away to Portsmouth, in January 1995. The following season, he again struggled to claim a regular place, but in the 1996–97 season established himself in the centre of the Burnley defence, and remained there for the next three seasons, though occasionally played out of position by manager Chris Waddle. By March 1998, such was the turmoil that the Clarets found themselves in, Brass was their longest serving player, and still only 22 years old. In that summer, Stan Ternent replaced Waddle, and made Brass captain, but the latter struggled to keep his form and found himself in the reserves. In the summer of 1999, Burnley signed Mitchell Thomas, resulting in Brass playing only occasionally for the first team. He went on a one-month loan to Halifax Town in September 2000, with the first of his six league games being a win against Torquay. After the loan was up, Halifax could not afford to sign him and he returned to the Burnley reserves, before joining York City on a free transfer in March 2001.[citation needed][4] He had played 134 league games for Burnley, scoring once, ironically against York City.[5]
Parking, palms, a primary, Plainmoor, a promenade and a police museum. It doesn't have to start with a p to be on the latest Devoncast, but it helps. We've been witnessing a revolution at the South Devon Primary and experiencing people power over parking meters. There's a new report on the Torquay palm tree saga and some wise words from Torbay councillors over the future of Torquay United's Plainmoor ground. With devolution coming for Devon and Torbay we meet some of the people who will have the job of making it happen, and we hear more about how Exmouth's sea wall repairs are going. We also hear how Dartmoor's guardians are coping with a financial squeeze. There's an appeal for help from a charity close to our hearts and a look behind the scenes of Devon's newest museum, which comes complete with its very own TARDIS!

How do you save a football club from Administration? Following on from Graham Clark's interview we spoke with his successor as head of the Plymouth Argyle Fans Trust, former Club President Chris Webb. We convene just days after fellow Devon side Torquay United are placed into Administration but it is never the less a timely reminder of those dark days we faced as a club. We'll discuss how the Fans Trust, PASOTI and the Green Taverners came together as once, a chance meeting with Kevin Heaney and his wild plans, The Argyle Vigil, Peter Risdale's help and hindrance, being introduced to James Brent and persuading him to save the club.We move on to him jumping from one side of the table to the other; becoming Honorary Club President, beginning to understand internal decisions and his speech at Wembley in front of sixty-odd thousand. #pafc | #tufcThen we'll talk all things Torquay and how we as a collective can help them through their own fight against Administration; the collective power fans can bring, wether football has an ownership problem - and how do we avoid them? Politics within the sport AND how Unionism can help. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A late release and shorter version due to technical gremlins affecting guest interviews this week. Disappointing but hopefully those guests can come back in the coming weeks as they have some exciting stuff to share. So just Matt Badcock from The Non League Paper this week but what a week of football news. He joins us straight from the press conference at Maidstone United as they gear up for their last 16 tie in the FA Cup at Coventry City. It's also been a busy week on the clubs in crisis front. Better news for Taunton Town but worrying times for Torquay United and Rochdale. There's a whole host of managerial changes as ever and keep an eye on the weather as non league football tries to get through its fixtures with an early season finish.

Put your left foot forward...Garry Nelson did more than that; he jumped in, full heartedly to a career which saw him loved by fans of every club he played for.Playing local football in Essex, he was overlooked by professional outfits and was about to head off to university until a certain Scottish manager called Smith, picked him up and signed him for Southend United.A successful spell at his hometown club was followed by a move to the west country when David Smith, the same Smith from above, took the talented forward to Home Park.A promotion followed, then several more with Brighton and Hove Albion and Charlton Athletic, before he hung up his boots back in Devon again, with Torquay United. Not content with the joys of football, Nelse also became an award winning author, documenting his time playing later in his career. This is the story of Garry Nelson.

In this episode, Paul sits down with Neil Roberts.Roberts started his career in 1994 when he played for Wrexham. After signing for the club as a trainee, he made his debut on 27 September 1997 during a 0–0 draw with Chesterfield before going on to score five goals in his next four games. He became an established first-team player at the Racecourse Ground, making 75 appearances and scoring 17 goals. He left Wrexham in 2000 to join Wigan Athletic, where he made 125 appearances and scoring 19 goals. He also spent time on loan at Hull City and Bradford City, scoring on his debut for the latter against Bristol City. He then made a permanent move to Doncaster Rovers in 2004.In 2006 Roberts came back to his hometown club Wrexham, where he became the team captain. He is a Welsh international with four caps. Roberts had a good start to the 2006–07 season by scoring two goals in the first two games. These goals were very important during this period as they were a penalty in a 2–1 away victory against local rivals Chester City on 20 August 2006 and the opening goal in Wrexham's 4–1 League Cup victory at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on 23 August 2006.However, in their 2–1 victory against Swindon Town on 9 September 2006, Roberts picked up an injury. He made his comeback in a 2–1 defeat against Milton Keynes Dons scoring the opening goal. However, Roberts suffered more injuries throughout the course of the season. On 21 April 2007 he came on as a second-half substitute in a game against Torquay United and scored his first goal since October 2006 and Wrexham's winning goal to ensure a vital 1–0 win in Wrexham's bid for survival in the Football League Two. He was released by Wrexham in May 2008 following the club's relegation to the Football Conference.[6]On 24 June 2008, Roberts signed for Welsh Premier League side Rhyl, where he combined playing with coaching opportunities and his business interests. After one season at Rhyl, Roberts left to take over as a project manager at Premier League side Manchester CityFollow us on Instagram, YouTube & Twitter - @UpTheTownShow
