In this episode of HPNA Palliative Perspective, we're joined by Betty Ferrell—Editor of the Journal of Hospice & Palliative Nursing (JHPN), nurse, and internationally recognized researcher. As the leader of the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium, she brings a unique perspective shaped by decades of connection with hospice and palliative care nurses across the U.S. and around the world.  Now in her 49th year in nursing—beginning in oncology and entering hospice as it emerged in the United States—Dr. Ferrell reflects on the remarkable growth of the field and where we stand today.  At the heart of this conversation is the idea of a “professional home.” Drawing on the foundational work of pioneers like Florence Wald and Cicely Saunders, she highlights the enduring importance of interprofessional, whole-person care—and the need to stay grounded in those values as the field evolves.  In a time that can feel complex and demanding, this episode offers a clear message: you don't have to do this work alone. Finding your people, building community, and staying connected—through colleagues and organizations like the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association—are essential to sustaining both practice and purpose.  A thoughtful and reassuring conversation about belonging, connection, and the future of hospice and palliative nursing.      Betty Ferrell, RN, PhD, MA, CHPN®, FAAN, FPCN® Betty Ferrell, RN, PhD, MA, CHPN®, FAAN, FPCN® has been in nursing for 48 years and has focused her clinical expertise and research in pain management, quality of life, and palliative care. Good food is something we all look forward to, something that tastes good, nourishes us, connects us to culture and community, and that we enjoy sharing with friends and family. That doesn't change when someone moves into a long term care facility. In fact, food often matters more to people living in long-term care. At its best, food supports nutrition and health, triggers positive memories, and provides moments of comfort and connection. However, we know this isn't always the case. In fact, poor food is often one of the top complaints that residents share with Ombudsmen representatives and family members. When Consumer Voice conducted a survey of over 450 residents last year, two thirds of respondents said that their food usually doesn't look or smell appealing. In this episode, we're joined by Vanessa Emm, the Operations Director for the National Association of Activities Professionals (NAAP) who has worked in the long-term care field for over 20 years. We are also joined by Summer Nancollas, a Culinary Director at a Senior Living Community in Nevada. Join us as we talk about why food plays such a central role in residents' well being, what gets in the way of good meals in long term care, and the best practices that facilities can use to create dining experiences that truly honor residents' needs, preferences, and dignity.

Host: Jonathan Jay Format: Live panel Q&A — Riverside Studios, Hammersmith Guests: Seven Inner Circle members   Overview The Inner Circle panel at Riverside Studios tackle one of the most important questions in business acquisition: how do you remain a strategic investor after buying a business, rather than sliding back into day-to-day operations? The episode also covers sector selection for first-time buyers, and how transferable skills apply across industries. Stay at the Top of the Quadrant The panel are unanimous: go in as an investor from day one, not an owner or operator. Getting sucked into running the business is a slippery slope — one panellist warns that 18 months later you can find yourself the accidental Operations Director. Your highest-value task is strategy and growth, not delivery. Buy a platform business with an existing management team, so you can step back immediately. Choosing Your First Sector For a former military officer in the audience wondering where to start, the panel's advice is practical: begin by eliminating sectors you won't touch, then follow the private equity money. Subscribe to deal flow newsletters, look for fragmented industries with proven trade and PE buyers, and pick something close to home geographically for your first acquisition. One panellist chose barbershops purely for the cash flow model — no debtors, daily revenue — and used the income to fund school fees and a car. Another built a hands-off holiday let portfolio using other people's money, taking just 15 minutes a week to manage. Mindset Shifts After Five Years Asked what they've learned about themselves, the panel give rapid-fire answers: resilience is everything; stop exchanging time for money; you are more capable than you believe. The biggest identity shift for several panellists has been moving from 'business owner' to 'acquisitions entrepreneur' — a reframe that changes how others see you and how you see yourself. Key Takeaways •       Buy a platform business — one that runs without you from day one. •       Follow the PE money — if private equity is active in a sector, there's a proven exit waiting. •       Geography matters for your first deal — keep it local and manageable. •       Cash flow businesses beat debtors — recurring, upfront revenue reduces risk. •       Community accelerates everything — you can't do this as well alone.

Most dealers are using AI like a glorified Google search. Type something in, get something back, move on. That is not wrong exactly, but it is leaving a lot on the table. Brent Wees and Will Benedicks have a sharper way of thinking about it. Knowledge is now scalable through AI. An agent scales the execution of that knowledge. Most people are only using the first half. In this episode, they walk through the RIPE framework for writing prompts that actually do what you need them to do, explain what separates a basic prompt from a working AI agent, and describe how they got eight countries worth of dealers to build a vendor evaluation agent live at NADA in under 35 minutes. There are quick wins in here for sales, service and marketing. The kind you can actually go back and use today. What's covered: • The difference between using AI for an answer and building an agent that automates the execution  • RIPE framework in full: Role, Instructions, Parameters and Exceptions, with real dealership examples  • The NADA hackathon: how a vendor evaluation agent was built live with dealers in 32 minutes  • Why lazy prompts waste time and how to brief AI the same way you would brief a new sales consultant  • Sales quick win: washing customer communications through AI to turn a six out of ten into an eight  • Service quick win: using AI to translate fault codes and technical findings into plain customer language  • Marketing quick win: using AI to plan quarters ahead instead of waiting to be told what to put in market  • How to prompt for the prompt, and why this is the fastest way to build your AI literacy Brent Wees is a certified AI trainer with 25 years in automotive marketing, including agency work with Toyota and Lexus. He builds hands-on AI hackathons at dealer conferences specifically because he knows that dealers learn by doing, not by watching slide decks. Will Benedicks is Operations Director at Proctor dealerships, with a career that started on the showroom floor and spans sales, finance, compliance and multi-site operations. He is also the kind of person who puts his hand up in a room full of senior operators and asks the question everyone else was too embarrassed to ask. If you have ever typed a lazy prompt and wondered why AI is not delivering for your business, Brent and Will fix that in this episode. About Symco Training: Symco Training was founded in 2000 by Simon Bowkett and it was his belief that the business had to offer its clients something different. That difference was clear to Simon from his days in the dealership when he experienced many sales trainers who had all the answers, but were unable, unwilling or both to actually show the delegate how they could be implemented. It remains the ethos of the business today. You see, Symco only employ trainers that are committed to delivering not only in spiring and insightful training, but are equally as happy to demonstrate these skills and techniques with real customers in your own showroom. We believe in order for sales training to be effective and in Simon's words 'real world', it needs to be tried and tested in the only place it matters the showroom floor. There is no room for theory when your goals are for your team to sell more cars, hours or parts and retain more profit. In dealerships around the world the focus applied by many of the sales executives is to try and sell a deal. Symco specialise in getting your teams to focus on selling themselves, the product and then supporting this with the deal. To find out more visit: www.symcotraining.co.uk

Step into the uncompromising truth of the gospel with the Savior Speakers Series, where we refuse to dilute faith for cultural comfort. In this powerful episode, Associate Executive Director and Operations Director of People of Faith Builder, Angelie Kapoor, calls believers to realignment—a return to Christ-centered thinking and living that's anchored in Scripture, not shaped by fleeting cultural trends. If you've ever felt stuck, conflicted, or uncertain despite your faith, this episode confronts the real source of the battle: the battlefield of your mind.Discover the difference between behavior modification and true transformation, and why your daily thoughts, no matter how subtle, shape your destiny. Are you being conformed or transformed?Tune in as we explore Romans 12:2 and expose the silent drift away from truth. Leave surface-level faith behind. Step into courageous obedience and trade comfort for conviction. One question for reflection: What's truly shaping your mind today?Episode Highlights:03:56 - If the enemy can influence your thinking, he doesn't have to control anything else. And most of the time, he doesn't do it in obvious ways. He does it subtly, quietly, through thoughts that seem reasonable but are not rooted in truth.07:13 - Instead, we slowly begin to adopt language that sounds right, but that isn't rooted in scripture. We start to prioritize comfort over conviction. We start to treat truth as flexible instead of it being fixed. And we keep faith private instead of living it out boldly. And over time, without even realizing it, we begin to think more like culture than like Christ. 19:19 - Discernment is not a personality trait. It's the result of thinking that is aligned with truth. So if your thinking is shaped by culture, your discernment will be weak. But if your thinking is shaped by scripture, your discernment will be strong.Connect with Angelie KapoorLinkedIn

"Shopify POS is a powerful foundation, but it's not a turnkey solution for every retail scenario. The platform's maturity is a moving target, and understanding its ecosystem gaps is crucial for strategic planning and preventing costly misalignments."Joseph Brown, Operations Director, KubixAre you considering Shopify POS for your retail operations but unsure about its strengths and limitations? You're not alone. As one of the leading ecommerce platforms, Shopify has rapidly expanded into the retail point-of-sale space, but its product is still evolving. In this pod, we explore the realities of implementing Shopify POS backed by expert insights from Joe Brown, Operations Director at Kubix, who has direct experience implementing POS for different business models. Whether you're running a standalone store or extensive retail estate, this episode has practical advice, product limitations and decisions that can make or break your omnichannel strategy. The reality…Shopify POS has become more capable for retail, especially in multistore environments with enhanced permissions and faster workflows. However, it still has capability gaps that can surprise retailers, and requires careful planning, discovery and customisation. Key discussion points1. Deep discovery is criticalA recurring theme is the importance of thorough discovery when planning POS projects. Retailers should map existing workflows, identify edge cases (like made-to-order products, custom packing, or complex stock movements) and assess how Shopify's platform supports or complicates these processes.Rushing into implementation without understanding detailed workflows can lead to costly rework or operational issues down the line. 2. Inventory management limitationsOne of Shopify's gaps is in inventory management for complex use cases. For example, handling stock exchanges between stores where products are unavailable locally remains problematic. Shopify currently supports split fulfillment orders but lacks native support for multi-quantity line items or real-time transfer workflows, which can frustrate larger or more nuanced operations.3. Hardware cost & compatibilityPOS selection is more than a software decision; hardware investment is foundational. Some issues arise when existing custom integrations, like bespoke receipt printers or scanner setups, are incompatible with new POS hardware or updates. Testing hardware thoroughly before rollout is essential, and technical teams need to validate network setups, peripherals and existing workflows.Practical tip: Shopify's recommended hardware kits may not suit every store. Custom hardware may be necessary, but it can add complexity and cost.4. Ecosystem maturity and functional gapsWhile Shopify's ecosystem is growing, certain functionality including multi-currency gift cards, B2B support or advanced inventory tracking, lag behind expectations. Retailers with complex order workflows may need to integrate third-party apps or custom solutions to fill these gaps.Chapters[00:45] Introduction to Shopify POS and Its Evolution[03:30] Market Positioning and Retail Challenges[06:40] Discovery Process in Retail POS Implementations[09:25] Hardware Considerations for Shopify POS[12:20] Custom Development Needs in Retail[15:10] Omnichannel Experience and Customer Journey[17:55] Integration Challenges with Legacy Systems[20:50] Inventory Management and Workflow Complexities[23:15] Future Improvements and Wish List for Shopify POS

In this powerful episode, longtime HPNA member Linda Blum, APRN shares experiences from the last few years of her rich nursing career in volunteerism —training incarcerated caregivers in a California state prison hospice program. Linda explores the ethical complexity of end-of-life care behind bars, from POLST conflicts and CPR decisions to pain management in a correctional setting where Medicare rules don't apply.  Through ELNEC education and interdisciplinary collaboration, she's helping nurses, correctional officers, and incarcerated caregivers reclaim agency and restore dignity at the end of life. This conversation examines moral distress, serious illness communication, and the transformative power of “risking love” in some of the most marginalized settings.  A moving reflection on bearing witness, professional courage, and the light within us all. About Humane Prison Hospice Project  The Humane Prison Hospice Project is developing a humanitarian, cost-effective, and transformative solution to ensure that those aging and dying in prison receive compassionate care. Since 2017, the Humane Prison Hospice Project has worked to ensure that incarcerated individuals receive compassionate end-of-life care from trained peers. Humane implements a comprehensive 80-hour, 15-module curriculum to train incarcerated individuals as peer caregivers, equipping them with the skills to provide hands-on care and emotional support to their aging and terminally ill peers. Graduates of this program are part of a growing movement to humanize end-of-life care behind bars. Since launching this initiative, we have trained over 150 peer caregivers across California prisons, and are bringing our programming to three states—Michigan, Washington, and Oregon—marking our first step toward national replication. Learn more on their website: https://humaneprisonhospiceproject.org/  For anyone listening who has experience in hospice, nursing, programming in prisons or facilitating, and you live in CA, WA, MI, or OR, Humane is seeking volunteer facilitators who participate in trainings for peer caregivers in prisons across each state. We'd love to hear from you -- please reach out to Camila Ryder at camila@humaneprisonhospiceproject.org with your name, location, and any relevant experience. If you're interested in learning more, register via Zoom for one of our virtual monthly Informational Meetings.      Linda Blum, GNP, MSN, RN   Linda Blum, GNP, MSN, RN, is a retired gerontological nurse practitioner living in California. Born and raised in New York State, she moved to the Bay Area over 45 years ago. Her early career included work in virology and immunology laboratories before she left a PhD program after the birth of her first child. She later worked as a birth doula and photographer and entered nursing school intending to become a nurse midwife. Instead, her path led her to the care of people with serious illness. She often jokes that she has a poor sense of direction and found end of life, not beginning of life, as she prefers anxious children to anxious parents.  Linda worked in home infusion and home hospice as a case manager and manager before returning to school for her at UCSF and then completing a palliative medicine fellowship at the VA in Palo Alto. She was  hired as the first clinician to provide palliative care/medicine consultation at California Pacific Medical Center.  Since retiring in 2023, Linda has volunteered her time and expertise with the Humane Prison Hospice Project, where she facilitates training for incarcerated individuals serving as peer caregivers. Her passion is helping to train nurses and professional staff in the carceral setting using a modified ELNEC curriculum.  Linda enjoys traveling, caring for her grandchildren, and telling silly jokes and puns. Her spirit animal is a penguin—preferably a Gentoo—and if you ask for photos, your inbox may quickly overflow.     Brett Snodgrass, DNP, FNP-C, ACHPN®, FAANP Dr. Brett Snodgrass has been a registered nurse for 28 years and a Family Nurse Practitioner for 18 years, practicing in multiple settings, including family practice, urgent care, emergency departments, administration, chronic pain and palliative medicine. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. Season 6, EPISODE 277 Dry Creek Ranch: Passion For Red Angus Dry Creek Ranch in Amidon, North Dakota, is a family-run Red Angus cattle operation that focuses on raising registered and commercial cattle, selling breeding bulls, and offering ranch-raised beef directly to customers. The ranch is operated by the Robison family and emphasizes practical, efficient cattle genetics and long-term herd improvement, with activities that include private-treaty sales and ranch-direct beef marketing. It's part of the western North Dakota ranching tradition, combining working-ranch livestock production with a direct connection to consumers and other cattle producers in the region. Current State Of The Beef Business Beef prices are climbing faster than almost anything else in the consumer price index. The broad beef and veal category is up 15 percent over the past year, as of January. Uncooked ground beef has hit a new record high, after posting its biggest jump since June of 2020, according to new government data released last Friday. That stands out against the rest of the grocery aisle, where price pressures have eased. Chicken prices rose just over 1 percent in the past year, while milk prices have stayed mostly flat. At the wholesale level, the average value of choice beef in 2025 was up 16 percent from the previous year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Even major meatpackers like Tyson Foods are feeling the strain, with the company's beef division reporting quarterly losses since early 2024. The surge in beef prices has pushed the White House to respond. President Donald Trump has pledged to increase competition in beef processing and has expanded Argentine beef import quotas in an attempt to boost supply. But the situation is more complicated. The U.S. cattle herd has fallen to its smallest level since the early 1950's. Drought, higher production costs, and elevated interest rates have all made raising cattle more expensive. Don Close, a senior animal protein analyst at Terrain Ag, says the cattle industry is cyclical, but this downturn has lasted longer than expected. Right now, ranchers can make more money selling animals young for slaughter than keeping them to rebuild herds. And even if herd expansion started today, it wouldn't reach grocery store shelves until at least 2028 — meaning beef prices could stay high for years. Meanwhile, the U.S. has halted shipments of live cattle from Mexico following the return of the New World screwworm. Imports from South America may provide some relief, but those supplies are mostly used for ground beef and won't quickly solve the broader cattle shortage. And that is a quick snap shot of the current beef business Reference: https://fortune.com/2026/02/14/why-are-beef-prices-so-high-american-cattle-herd-inflation/ Five Federally Indicted For Alleged $220 Million Nationwide Cattle Fraud Scheme Five individuals were federally indicted last week for their roles in an alleged $220 million nationwide fraud scheme involving the online and direct-to-consumer meat business Agridime. Those indicted by a Fort Worth federal grand jury on February 11, 2026, were: Jed Wood of Fort Worth, Texas, charged with three counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and one count of money laundering involving wiring more than $63,000 to a lender for “Home Payoff” Joshua Link of Strafford, Missouri, charged with ten counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and two counts of money laundering, including wiring more than $527,000 to purchase real property Tia Link of Smithton, Missouri, charged with three counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and one count of money laundering, including wiring more than $527,000 to purchase real property Taylor Bang of Killdeer, North Dakota, charged with eight counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and one count of money laundering Royana Thomas of Arlington, Texas, charged with six counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and one count of money laundering As alleged in the indictment, each of the defendants were associated with Agridime LLC, a business headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas that offered cattle sales and meat processing and retail services to the public.  Jed Wood served as the Operations Director.  Joshua Link served as the Executive Director.  Tia Link served as the Marketing Director.  Taylor Bang served as a cattle broker, and Royana Thomas served as the financial controller.  The indictment alleges that, from January 2021 through December 2023, the five defendants, acting through Agridime, perpetrated a fraud scheme in which they falsely represented to individual cattle purchasers, cattle ranchers, and feedlots that Agridime would use their funds to purchase specific individual cattle from each victim, raise the cattle, and eventually sell the meat from the same specific individual cattle for a profit.   In reality, as the indictment charges, the defendants did not use victim funds as promised and instead used newer cattle purchaser funds to pay Agridime operating expenses, pay funds owed by Agridime to earlier cattle purchasers, pay personal expenses, and purchase real property.  Reference: https://www.tsln.com/news/five-federally-indicted-for-alleged-220-million-nationwide-cattle-fraud-scheme-one-is-fugitive-on-fbi-wanted-list/ Featured Experts in the Cattle Industry Haley Robison - Dry Creek Ranch https://www.drycreekranchnd.com/ Follow On Facebook: @drycreekranchnd Kirk Donsbach – Financial Analyst at StoneX https://www.stonex.com/ Follow on Facebook: @StoneXGroupInc Shaye Wanner – Host of Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ Follow on Facebook: @cattleconvos Contact Us with Questions or Concerns Have questions or feedback? In our last story, we shared how leaders with the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde's treatment and recovery services say they are making strides in opioid addiction treatment. That includes work through Great Circle Recovery in Oregon. The tribe also provides transitional housing services through Main Street Recovery, a program with supportive housing, which also helps address mental health and addiction services on site. Kelly Rowe is the Executive Director of Health Services for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. “Instead of having to go to a facility where you might get 21 days or 28 days, that’s really been something that is more prescribed by insurance than it really is for the best thing for a person to have we’re not putting a limit on that. We’re saying what is good for you is what we want you to do. We’re letting them stay as long as they need to get well.  So that’s become another piece in the continuum of care for us. So, we’re really working hard to make sure people can get well and we’re creating a whole community of recovery here at the reservation.” Culture is a key aspect in the services says Jennifer Worth, the Operations Director for Main Street Recovery. “Being able to provide that that holistic approach with access to mental health and substance use and kind of figuring out what the needs are and being able to tailor that to each person that comes through … there’s lots of activities and different things that we’re able to take the residents to.  So for instance, tomorrow they’re going to be working on making paddles. And the other day they came in and they had been part of this carving class and they had all carved this ladle that’s going to be used for a future service that we’ll be adding on site at Main Street. So, things like that are really important.” Brian Krehbiel is a canoe maker who teaches paddle making and canoeing. “The canoe has just brought back so much our way of life all around the canoe. That bucket line that we feel when we’re all pulling together, we’re all going forward, we’re all making that forward movement and it helps with our noggins. If you should need it, if you don’t, you’re good. But if you should need some help of motivation and pushing you forward and to do try new things, however that is, that are good for you and it’s wicked fun.” For people on their mental health and recovery journey having trusted support is of great value says Sydney Clark a recovering addict and Peer Support Specialist Supervisor with the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. “I walk with them, letting them know that they’re not alone in that it’s okay to reach out. It’s okay to feel scared and it’s okay to question things because I didn’t know what I could question and what I couldn’t question and go into meetings having someone sit there with you that might know those questions to ask because that trauma that you’re going through right then and there … I’ve always loved helping people because it helps feed my soul … to be able to learn what would help us grow as a tribe. And each one of us play a big role in peer support, helps get people walk through a door that they normally probably would have never ever walked through.” Highlighted throughout the services is the resilience of Indigenous people, says Rowe. “My hope is that we can get out of this cycle of seeking out artificial substance to hide our pain, to hide our trauma that we’re not  afraid to  let that out and to seek out our cultural ways to  heal ourselves … for us, especially health and wellness, it becomes this this plan of no matter who you are, at what stage of life you’re in, we’re here for you and we want you to be able to  become a part of something bigger and that when you’re ready, we’re here for you.” This story is a collaboration with First Nations Experience Television with support from the Public Welfare Foundation. Leaders with the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde's treatment and recovery services say they're making strides in opioid addiction treatment in both the tribal community and in neighboring towns and cities. Jennifer Worth is the Operations Director for Great Circle Recovery in Oregon. “There are no throwaway people, everybody deserves the chance for hope and help.” Kelly Rowe is the Executive Director of Health Services for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. “It’s changed lives. It’s saved lives for us.” Kelly Rowe and Jennifer Worth talk about Grand Ronde’s recovery services. Worth says Great Circle started out of an idea to help figure out what to do about overdoses. “Folks were coming in and out of jail, there was a pattern where they were kind of noticing that there would be higher overdoses. And that’s because when people have an opioid use disorder and they go into incarceration and there’s no support during that time and they come out, they are more at risk and more vulnerable of an overdose. Being able to find other tools and avenues to support that was part of the vision of Great Circle.” The care is located on the reservation and off through Great Circle Salem, Great Circle Portland, and two mobile clinics. “Great Circle is steeped in the cultural and community values that Grand Ronde shares. And the way they care for their people is the way that we care for every patient that walks through these doors. And everybody matters. Everybody heals in community. And there is hope for each person that walks through that door. “ Taking care of the health and wellness of community members is a key tribal value, says Rowe. “We are doing it not just for Indian people, but for each other. And I know that when I’m coming to work and we’re building programming or giving services, it’s for me, my relatives, it’s for my son, my grandson, and so on and so on and so on. And truly is the seven generations ahead … the substances that are out there now that are so hard to get away from it's been difficult to make sure that we have enough services available to give to our people and we fight for beds, we fight for space to send our people to and that's what really led for us to make these services our own.” Chairwoman Cheryle Kennedy is the tribe's longtime leader and also has a long career in Native American health care, which includes addressing drug and alcohol addiction treatment. “I don’t believe that anyone, if you ask them today, ‘How many want to be an alcoholic or an addict?’. how many people are going to raise their hand? ‘Yeah, me, let me.’ No one starts like that, but it creeps in and it takes over, it consumes you. And pretty soon you have no life. You are then under the power of either the drink or the drug of choice, whatever it might be … as Native people, we think about ourselves in the whole. Colonization had those kind of effects … addictions, of use, misuse, need to be addressed.” The state, like many other states in the U.S., has been hit by the opioid crisis, including the misuse of prescription and illicit drugs. Addressing stigma around opioid use disorder is part of the work. Worth says this type of treatment shouldn't be any different than having a chronic health condition that needs to be managed. “Substance use shouldn’t be any different, but yet it is. And so, the more we can normalize and have these clinics out and available and embedded into the other services that are happening, it just destigmatizes that for everybody.” Great Circle is the first tribally-owned opioid treatment program in the state.
