Following on from the previous edition, Colin Shindler, Jim White and Jon Holmes set themselves the task of choosing from the English Football League as it then was, a team of the 1970s. That's not one individual club or national side, but a team composed of the outstanding players of that decade in some sort of logical formation that would bring out the best of them both as individuals and as team players. It is with evident relief that all our regular listeners will realise that we can start proceedings knowing that Jamie Vardy wasn't born until 1987 and therefore he is ruled ineligible for selection – which is going to cause Jon to scrabble around at the bottom of his Leicester City suitcase where he will no doubt find Frank Worthington and Keith Weller. However, the decade provided so many great players that selection of a final eleven is going to be difficult. The panel has great fun seeing who makes the final cut and they are sure you will be equally enthused to decide on your own team of the 1970s. Learn more about your ad choices. Paul Konchseky in the hot seat today, starting out playing Sunday League with the likes of John Terry, Bobby Zamora, Sol Campbell, and Ledley King to making his professional debut for Charlton at just 16. Konchesky remembers that famous playoff win over Sunderland, fiery training ground bust-ups, and the falling out with Alan Curbishley that eventually led him to West Ham. Along the way there are brilliant dressing room tales, including Scott Parker's transfer tactics, Andy Todd's short fuse, and Stephen Bywater with the best excuse you'll ever hear for not saving a shot. Konchesky's career is absolutely littered with sliding door moments including Curbishly turning up at his boyhood club West Ham forcing him out, being sat on the bench with Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Jesse Lingard and then choosing to go on loan the season Leicester won the league. The Go Radio Football Show: 19th of August, 2025 In Association with Burger King. This is a catch-up version of the live, daily Go Radio Football show. Join host Paul Cooney alongside Celtic legend Peter Grant and Award Winning Journalist Mark Guidi. Rangers and Celtic prepare for crucial Champions League qualifiers. The show opens with a discussion about Rangers' upcoming clash with Club Brugges. The panel acknowledges the challenge ahead, with Brugges seen as favorites, but they also highlight Rangers' impressive European pedigree and the financial implications of progressing—an estimated £40 million windfall. The conversation shifts to Celtic's transfer window frustrations, with speculation swirling around a potential move for veteran striker Jamie Vardy. Both pundits agree that while Vardy's age may raise eyebrows, his experience and fitness could bring a spark to the squad, especially given Celtic's current lack of firepower up front. Brendan Rodgers' press conference is a focal point, revealing his measured frustration with the club's recruitment strategy. Rodgers confirms that Celtic need reinforcements, particularly a reliable number nine, and hints at internal disagreements over transfer priorities. The panel discusses the implications of Rodgers' comments, suggesting that if the club fails to back him, this could be his final season at the helm. Russell Martin, Rangers' manager, is also featured, advocating for a joyful and energetic style of play. He emphasises the importance of clarity and unity within the squad, especially under the pressure of European competition. Don't miss it – hit subscribe, play and get stuck in!
