POPULARITY
This is the second half of the podcast chat with Dan, The Great Curator (on IG @the.great.curator). In our first half of the conversation (Episode 49, published way back on November 9th), we talked about particip-hation, blocking trolls, the state of content in The Hobby. In this episode, we talk about how people monetize content in The Hobby (#5 will shock you! JK those click bait lists are funny to me). We also get into questions from listeners (including yes, Rob G. the Sports Card Therapist, because this was recorded around Halloween time, and well, a lot happens in a month in The Hobby!). Questions pertained to Dan's grail, hobby goals for 2024, whether heel/face status matters for wrestling cards, Arena Club and lesser frequented marketplaces and auction houses, fiduciary duty in taking on sponsorships, and why is he the way he is. Finally, shoutout Dan The Great Curator's sponsor, Mr. Minty. And Merlin, the happiest person in The Hobby.
We welcome back the better half of the Sports Cards Nonsense duo, Jesse Gibson aka Sports Boi. We talk about SCN and Card Shop Live, how to save breaking (hint: baby breakers, ok maybe not a subtle hint), and why his partner, Mike Gioseffi, keeps ducking this podcast. We start by talking about the mega bid/shill bid situation with Sports Card Therapist (seems like eons ago already), because that's how much I delayed publishing this podcast episode. Jesse, I am so sorry for the delay in releasing this episode. I blame Cblez and the repackers who are supposedly ruining The Hobby =) Finally, If you would like to buy Sports Cards Nonsense merch (not a sponsor, not an affiliate), go to www.sportscardsnonsense.com where you can buy all the merch you want….just not any baby onesies.
In this episode, I tackle a variety of current hobby topics but primarily The Sports Card Therapist and what exactly is a flagship product.
EPISODE 175 - Clark and Hyung open the show giving their initial thoughts on the 2023 Topps Definitive Collection set including the big chase, the dual autograph 1/1 cards of Shohei Ohtani and Babe Ruth, and whether it's worth the $100K bounty. Then for Hobby Headlines, the guys address the controversy surrounding Rob G., aka Sports Card Therapist, but focus more on what lessons can be learned from it. They also talk about "megabids" as well as what they would do as a content creator if caught in a similar controversy. Then Clark and Hyung "cast their vote" in a new segment on recent lists that Major League Baseball put out asking followers who they think could win their first MVP next season, which rookie can rise to stardom in 2024, and who could get into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot. Then the guys bring it back to the hobby and decide whether they would invest in that player's cards. Lastly, they play their regular "Pick 1" segment where they are given two players or cards and subsequently debate which one they would rather invest in. Hyung asks whether the aforementioned 1/1 dual autograph card of Ohtani and Babe Ruth is a better investment or a 1933 Babe Ruth Goudey; Clark asks which would be better to buy – a Jackson Chourio base 1st Bowman Chrome autograph at $800 or a Jackson Holliday base 1st Bowman Chrome autograph at $500 (both PSA 10s). -------------------------- CONNECT WITH US! In this episode we talk about Topps offering free grading for the MLB Debut patch 1/1 cards, SGC offering $9 grading for 2022/23 Bowman products, the Sports Card Therapist got caught shill bidding, we had our good friend Tony from Milestone Sports Cards call in and chat with us, and so much more! This is a monologue episode about my ever evolving thoughts on the megabid/shill bid situation from Rob G., the Sports Card Therapist and the early stages of grief, or at least in this case, hobby grief.
“First”* 2-time guest Dan The Great Curator pops back into the podcast studio (in the first of a mini series of “Where Are They Now?” with my Season 1 guests) to share his thoughts on being a content creator and the current landscape of content in The Hobby. We talk about the concept of people who don't call themselves influencers but who influence others to not like influencers. *Sports Card Therapist, Rob Girard, was technically the first 2-time guest. =)
YouTube video link here: https://youtu.be/kbc2mHvs5CE Because one hour was just not enough, I had Rob Girard (on Instagram @sportscardtherapist) on again. I think this counts as a repeat appearance? I start this episode with having an individual hobby therapy session about how to handle online criticism with putting my face and voice out there and Rob does an excellent job talking me through this issue, including talking about his own personal experiences and his personal way of handling it. If you are a fellow content creator, I hope you gain some good insight from Rob! We then get to YOUR questions, which I solicited on Instagram, and so the episode turns into a hobby group therapy session. Hope you enjoy it and thank you for contributing questions, maybe this is something I do more often in the future! Thanks card fam, y'all are truly awesome. - Denny
EPISODE 151 - Clark and Hyung open the show talking about the Junior Caminero 1st Bowman Chrome superfractor that was recently graded a BGS 6.5, and what they would do if they owned the card. Then they welcome Rob Girard, aka the Sports Card Therapist, onto the show to discuss the recent National Sports Collectors Convention with all the highlights (all the cards and meeting hobby friends in person) as well as what could be improved upon for the show next year (ie. official trade night during each night of the National.) They also discuss vintage cards with Rob where he explains why sometimes the value of vintage sports cards can vary quite a bit even if it has the same number grade. Then as usual, the guys end off the show with the regular weekly Pick 1 segment where each of them put up two cards and they debate which one they would invest in. This week includes two lower end Shohei Ohtani baseball cards and two future Hall of Fame pitchers. YouTube video link here: https://youtu.be/r-N2TRr-OJ4 After an amazing time at The National in Rosemont, Illinois, I thought it would be the perfect time to have a sports card therapy session, and who better than Rob Girard, the Sports Card Therapist? There is no intro monologue to this episode, and instead we just get right to the special guest. Rob and I talk about his origin story, fatherhood, the state of Connecticut, whether The Hobby is about idol worship, and his rollercoaster relationship with Eli Manning. I then have technical difficulties with my Wi-Fi, which I keep in for the lesson to all podcasters that having a wired connection to your router is better than going wireless. We then get back on track with talking about how breaking and prospecting is gambling and about addiction in The Hobby and how it impacts kids. Then we talk about mental health in The Hobby, using my hobby journey as an example to start talking about hobby depression, Keeping Up With the Joneses, FOMO, and low end collecting. The virtues and vices of social media are also discussed, and Rob and I get very honest with each other (and with ourselves) and my hope is that you as the listener gets a lot out of this episode. We end with Rob talking about treating your head like a dangerous neighborhood and thus why it is important to have a wolfpack. We had a hard stop at one hour and so we had to end the recording!

In Part 5 of our Hockey Cards 101 series we cover a topic that's not touched upon much in the hobby...healthy collecting habits. We believe the hockey card hobby has many positives and benefits to collectors but it can be addicting. If your participation in the hobby gets out of control, there can be a downside too. We were fortunate to be joined for this sensitive topic by licensed therapist and avid hobbyist Rob Girard, better know as the Sports Card Therapist. If at any point, your experience in the hobby becomes unhealthy, reach out to someone for help. We're here to help too for anyone that could use it. It's our hope that bringing topics like this out in the open will help strengthen the foundation of the hocky hobby for further long-term prosperity and happiness for us all.Partners & SponsorsOur Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/HockeyCardsGongshowPWCC Marketplace - https://www.pwccmarketplace.comSlab Sharks Canadian Consignment - https://www.slabsharks.comSign up for Card Ladder - https://app.cardladder.com/signup?via=HCGongshowFollow Hockey Cards Gongshow on social mediaInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/hockey_cards_gongshow/TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@hockey_cards_gongshowFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/HockeyCardsGongshowTwitter - https://twitter.com/HCGongshowYouTube - http://youtube.com/@hockeycardsgongshow
