Alvan Adams was the Phoenix Suns' rookie center during the memorable 1976 NBA Finals run, and he was nothing short of sensational in his debut season. A 6'9" center out of the University of Oklahoma, Adams won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 1975–76 after averaging around 19 points and 9 rebounds per game, bringing a unique blend of size, skill, and passing ability that was ahead of its time for a big man. He was a key reason the Suns — a team few expected to contend — made it all the way to the Finals, and his performance throughout the playoffs announced him as one of the league's brightest young talents. The 1976 NBA Finals featured the Boston Celtics defeating the Phoenix Suns in six games, widely remembered as one of the greatest series in basketball history. Game 5 in particular is considered a classic — a triple-overtime thriller at Boston Garden that saw the Celtics ultimately prevail 128–126 in what many still call the greatest game ever played. The series was a showcase for Boston's John Havlicek in what turned out to be his final playoff run, along with Dave Cowens, Jo Jo White, and Paul Silas, while the Suns' Garfield Heard hit a buzzer-beater to force the third overtime before Boston closed it out in Game 6 to claim their 13th NBA championship. Adams would go on to spend his entire 13-year career with Phoenix, becoming the franchise's all-time leading scorer and rebounder at the time of his retirement, and remains one of the most beloved figures in Suns history. The number on his back was a tribute to a player he idolized growing up and battled many times ima his NBA career, and he has openly acknowledged that a legendary player's decision to jump to the ABA helped him win that Rookie of the Year Award 50 years ago — an iconic rookie season that landed him on the June 7, 1976 cover of Sports Illustrated in a battle against Hall of Famer Dave Cowens — an image that perfectly summed up the undersized rookie who refused to back down from anyone. Now Alvan Adams is coming to Past Our Prime to relive it all. He'll talk about that stunning rookie season, the gut-wrenching triple-overtime Game 5 loss that still haunts and thrills Suns fans to this day, the story behind his number, the coach he has to thank for his path to Phoenix, and the teammate he considers the best he ever shared a court with during his Suns career. It's a conversation decades in the making, and Past Our Prime is the place where it finally happens. Download and subscribe and leave a review if you could. Learn more about your ad choices. Ah, snap, here we go again. It's another 30 minutes of nothing but the best Dirty Mo Media has to offer. It's Dirty Thirty time, y'all! First up, Dale Jr. wants everyone to know about Shan van Gisbergen's unique footwork that sets him apart (by a few seconds...) from the rest of the field. Then we hear from SVG himself on whether he feels it's truly an advantage or not. Over in the land of spotters, the Door Bumper Clear crew welcomed Hall of Famer Kurt Busch to the table, where he told us about his championship run in 2004, his imaginary friends, and the cougar that rode with him at Talladega. Dale Jr. interviewed basketball's newest phenom and Charlotte Hornets rookie, Kon Knueppel! He discusses the moment he got called up and the Rookie of the Year battle with Cooper Flagg. Last but not least, we have an epic Bless Your 'Hardt moment. Dale & Amy play a rousing round of "This or That," where the conversation about hard vs. soft taco shells divides the room between dirty minds and innocent foodies. Tarik Skubal's season—and possibly his financial future—just took a major hit. The Tigers ace is expected to miss 2–3 months with an elbow injury, and Jake and Jordan break down what this means not only for Detroit's season but also for Skubal's looming free agency. Could this injury cost him a historic contract? They also discuss Framber Valdez's struggles on the mound and the fallout from hitting Trevor Story in a lopsided loss to the Red Sox. Shohei Ohtani continues to be one of the most fascinating players in baseball, but is there cause for concern? The guys analyze his recent pitching performance and dig into the narrative that his hitting dips when he's on the mound. Is this just small sample size noise, or something teams should actually be paying attention to? To wrap things up, it's time for some early-season hardware. With one month in the books, Jake and Jordan hand out their picks for AL and NL MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year. Who's real, who's surprising, and who might not last? The overreactions are flying—and that's exactly how we like it. In this episode of On The Ball with Ric Bucher, Ric takes aim at what he sees as a flawed NBA Rookie of the Year narrative, explaining why Cooper Flagg's all-around burden and production for the Dallas Mavericks should outweigh the case for Kon Knueppel and Charlotte's improved record. He then connects that debate to one of the most controversial award decisions in league history: LeBron James vs. Carmelo Anthony for Rookie of the Year in 2004, exposing how inconsistent voter logic can be from era to era.Ric also dives into the state of NBA discourse on Threads and social media, using the lazy Stephen Curry vs. Magic Johnson argument as an example of how nuance and historical context are disappearing from basketball conversations. He explains why greatness does not need false comparisons to be appreciated. Finally, Ric delivers a forceful defense of Steve Kerr, arguing that the Golden State Warriors head coach did far more than ride the coattails of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. From player development to championship adaptability, Ric breaks down why Kerr's coaching résumé is stronger than many fans want to admit — and why Warriors fans may soon learn exactly what he meant to the franchise.Time Stamps: 00:00 Intro, Coachable book update and where to follow Ric 03:00 Why Cooper Flagg should beat Kon Knueppel for NBA Rookie of the Year 08:00 The LeBron James vs. Carmelo Anthony Rookie of the Year parallel 13:15 Why NBA Threads has become a bad place for smart basketball discussion 16:30 Stephen Curry vs. Magic Johnson — why the comparison misses the point 21:00 Ric's defense of Steve Kerr and why Warriors fans underrate him 27:45 Why Kerr's 2022 title may be his best coaching jobHashtags: #NBA #OnTheBall #RicBucher #CooperFlagg #KonKnueppel #RookieOfTheYear #DallasMavericks #CharlotteHornets #LeBronJames #CarmeloAnthony #StephenCurry #MagicJohnson #SteveKerr #GoldenStateWarriors #NBAPodcastSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/bucher-and-friends. He also dives into the powerful coaching team guiding his rookie campaign, including mentorship from Jeremy Flores, strategic support from Joan Duru, and collaboration with Tomas Mallem. Kauli explains how rotating between coaches, building trust, and focusing on mental performance helped him handle pressure and perform at the highest level. The Tahitian standout also shares stories about his family's influence, surfing heavy waves with his siblings, and living a deliberately “off-grid” lifestyle while traveling the world.
