In this episode of Ask a Responsive Fundraiser, Scott sat down with Trevor Nelson, Co-Founder of HGA Fundraising and host of the Hey Nonprofits podcast, to explore how nonprofit events can become a springboard for long-term donor engagement, not just a one-night success. Trevor is known for leading nonprofits to more profitable fundraising experiences through HGA's auction services, but what stands out most is his commitment to donor relationships after the event. In this conversation, you'll get key insights on things like: • Why many nonprofits leave donor potential on the table after events • What behavioral signals to look for to identify committed supporters • How auctions, raffles, and follow-up strategies can drive donor lifetime value • Why a responsive mindset is key to connecting donors with your mission beyond the ballroom Trevor reminds us that if you're only thinking about dollars raised that night, you're missing the real opportunity. Museum Research: Big Data Meets Thick Data, with Elena Kazlas and Adaheid Mestad

Making the Museum

Cultural projects should be data-driven — but which *kind* of data? What's the difference between the “big data” we all know — and “thick data”? Which is more important? (Hint: trick question.) What does cell phone data have to do with sculpture gardens? What's a “two-hour ring”? What if we just recorded visitors narrating their entire experience — out loud?Elena Kazlas (Founder, Elevativ) and Adaheid Mestad (Design Anthropologist, HGA) join Jonathan Alger (Managing Partner, C&G Partners) to discuss “Museum Research: Big Data Meets Thick Data”.Along the way: drawing polygons, the odd truth of Connecticut art museums, and the “streakers, strollers, scholars” model.  Talking Points: 1. Big Data = Quantitative. Thick Data = Qualitative.2. Big Data on museum visitors includes demographics, origin/where they are coming from, how long they spend on site, leisure patterns and spending patterns in near real-time. 3. Big Data analytics inform business and marketing strategies to support the mission. 4. But Big Data (numbers) alone can't capture the emotions of visitors' daily lives. 5. Thick Data reveals the social, emotional, and cultural context of individuals and their social identity in the place they are in6. Thick Data is real-time, whole-person context, and can be scaled.7. Thick Data anchors strategic, programming, and operational decisions on insights derived directly from the perspectives of visitors, members, and community.8. When Big Data meets Thick Data, we support strategic, efficient, and impactful mission decisions.Guest Bios:Elena Kazlas is the Founder & Creator of Elevativ, LLC. Elena leads Elevativ with a left-brain/right-brain approach to project planning, balancing both quantitative and qualitative elements as they relate to a project's potential success. Welcome to the final session of our three-part podclass “Disrupting American gods.” Today Heather sits down with hip-hop artist Kevin “KB” Burgess, as he unpacks the themes of his latest book Dangerous Jesus. KB wants us to meet a Jesus who questions the status quo, threatens those seeking to divide us, and teaches us radical love of others. This conversation also reveals how KB discovered his call to music and ministry. Plus, KB shares his perceptive analysis of how Christians are seen in today's popular culture. In this episode Heather also taps into a lighter conversation with her best friend and co-blogger Scarlett Longstreet in Safe Space, our new segment where Heather and Scarlett share their candid takes on social media, popular culture, much more. Today they discuss the ethics and economics of featuring family in social media. Should parents who have monetized their platform, and who rely on their children as a source of content, pay their children? Let's talk it out. Guest Bio Kevin “KB” Burgess is a Dove Award–winning rapper, speaker, and podcaster. With four full-length albums to his name—including 2020's His Glory Alone, for which he won the Dove Award for Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year—the multi-hyphenate artist is an inimitable force on today's scene. He has become a No. 1 hitmaker and has received critical acclaim for his studio releases with placement on Billboard's Top 200 Album Chart and top 5 on Billboard's Top Rap Album Chart. KB is cohost of the popular podcast Southside Rabbi. His latest book is called Dangerous Jesus. Furthermore, HGA—a movement he spearheaded made up of multiethnic urban men and women from all walks of life—has amassed a loyal following around the globe. Although KB wears many hats, his greatest joy is being a husband to Michelle and a father to their three children.  Host Bio Heather Thompson Day is an associate professor of communication at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. She advises others to listen to the curiosity that pulls them and cultivate an introspective mindset. In addition to stewarding projects at HGA that demonstrate a holistic approach to design and deeply integrated sustainability, Ariane is also working on change management at the firm, which includes cultivating an inclusive culture and a distributed network of intelligence around sustainability, equity, and community action. The company has prioritized transparency and and is engaged in research internally and with outside partners.Ariane appreciates the progress she is seeing in transdisciplinary thinking and would like to see greater advancement toward a circular economy in the building industry. “I hope that 200 years from now, historians will look at this moment as the fulcrum, the moment everything changed,” she says. “We are shaping a regenerative future.”
