An editor at Vanity Fair and a contributor to the New Yorker, among others, Mike Sacks is the author of ten books. Two of those books are collections of in-depth interviews with profoundly influential comedy writers from the legendary to the less known but no less important. His other books take a little more explaining. Two of them are being re-published this week: “Stinker Lets Loose” is a deliberately badly written novelization of a 1970's trucker movie that never actually existed. “Randy!” Is an “unpublished memoir” Sacks “found” at a yard sale written by an average Maryland dirtbag who's come into some money. Sacks also co-wrote “Welcome to Woodmont College,” a fake catalogue from a really expensive (and really shit) boutique college, out in hardback last month. Today we discuss his approach to comedy — both writing it himself and what he's learned from interviewing some of the best to ever do it. Okay, so this episode is a little complicated. A couple months back, I spoke with Mark Rozzo, a Brooklyn musician, about Burger Records' reissue of the soundtrack to the 1977 trucker movie, Stinker Lets Loose. Rozzo's uncle, C.J. McKnight, had evidently written and performed the music, and and Rozzo had happened to find all of his uncle's old stuff right around the time he met comedian Mike Sacks, who was in the process of re-releasing a 40th anniversary paperback edition of the movie novelization by James Taylor Johnston.
C.J. McKNIGHT "Stinker Strikes Back" (Bonus Track) Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack SPECIAL 42ND ANNIVERSARY EDITION!!! https://burgerrecords.11spot.com/c-j-mcknight-stinker-let-s-loose-ost.html In the mid 1970s I worked on 3 low budget drive in movies. The first (and easily most successful) was a hillbilly race car movie entitled Moonrunners that was the bases for The Dukes Of Hazard television program. The second was a screwball science fiction comedy so full of plot holes and continuity errors that it was deemed unreleasable. Eventually the distributor edited in a few hardcore sex scenes and it was released as Flesh Gordon during the porn chic era. The last movie I worked on was a trucker buddy CB radio film entitled Stinker Let’s Loose. It stared a first time actor named James McCoolroy who seemed to have been hired on the basis of his ability to grow chest hair. The director was a Spanish alcoholic who insisted the script be rewritten to include his recently acquired pet chimpanzee. And the whole thing was sponsored by Schlitz beer. I swear the entire cast and crew spent the whole six weeks of filming absolutely shit face plastered on schlitz. I remember one night the piss drunk director offering $1000 to anyone who could out box his monkey. The film was an unmitigated disaster. Some of the footage was sold to other better trucking movies. A scene where several truckers smash up a town with their big rigs in an attempt to rescue Stinker from a corrupt sheriff ended up in the movie Convoy. Another scene where a truck was crashed through a billboard was used in White Line Fever. - James Johnston, Author of Stinker Lets Loose! The Novelization

Do you remember the good ol’ boy movies of the 1970s? The ones that celebrated a guy, who maybe wasn’t particularly handsome, or smart, or heroic, but he loved sweet cars, was always up for a good time, and inexplicably surrounded by hot willing women? Well Mike Sacks remembers those movies, which is why he … Continue reading Frotcast 339: Stinker Lets Loose, Comic-Con →

On this week’s episode, we talk to Mike Sacks - author, comedy writer, and host of the podcast, “Doin’ it with Mike” - about his summers at Camp Airy and Camp Seafarer in the 80s. Despite his tough exterior, Mike turns out to be quite the sentimental camp philosopher. Like most of our guests, camp had a big impact on how he sees the world and shares what we all know to be true: “Camp time is like living through amber.” Poetic, right? An accomplished writer, Mike shares that the most precious and meaningful writing of his life hasn’t been his New York Times articles, but the love letters he and his girlfriend wrote back and forth the summer before his freshman year of high school. In fact, he still gets verklempt every time he hears Journey on the radio because Steve Perry’s voice brings him back right back to that summer of long-distance love. Mike also shares a great story about an extreme case of homesickness that set upon him the very moment he waved goodbye to his parents and how even the most experienced counselor could do nothing to snap him out of it. We also learn about Mike’s crab-whispering skills and that, even though Mike wishes that he was Nordic or Icelandic, he is, according to three DNA tests, 100% Lithuanian Jew. Mike’s new novel, Stinker Lets Loose, is now available under the pseudonym James Taylor Johnston.
