Deborah Wolfe chats with Deborah Cribbs from www.givethemten.org about the cat situation in different places including Turkey, Tunisia, Europe and America, and how the general attitude toward stray or street cats differs. Do you let your cats have an indoor life only, or an outdoor life only or maybe they get to come and go when they want. Different cultures are at play here and in Tunisia Deborah Cribbs described how kittens were often dropped off at the local fish store to fend for themselves. Wolfe adds cat facts including a description of why people are allergic to cats and describes dog allergy trials for perspective owners of doodles or poodles (the hypoallergenic breeds) and that's when Deborah Cribb made a fantastic suggestion; if you think you have a family member with a pet allergy but it seems to be with only some cats or some pets and you aren't sure….you can foster a pet! Right, your family, and the kids especially, know the pet is there temporarily, but you get a chance to test that pet fully and if no allergies manifest you can adopt. Deb Wolfe suggests for families who want to give a cat or kitten as a Christmas gift wrap a stuffed animal or figurine like the pet your kids are begging for and then add a homemade gift card for one to be selected from a shelter. Go to the shelter after the bustle and unpredictability of the holidays is done and the house is calm and decorations are put away. Once spring hits in North America, Cribbs says its kitten season so if that's what you are looking for that's when you'll have many cutie kittens to pick from. Deb Wolfe interviews Deborah Cribbs, Founder & Leader of the Give Them Ten movement for CATS. Cribbs says ‘cats can't do math, but they do multiply' and explains how promoting cat spay/neuter in Cincinnati brought the shelter cats no kill rate from 37%- 96%. How many cats do you think wil result if a mating pair are together for 5 years? Think about it… how many offspring will a Romeo and a Juliet cat make if they keep mating naturally for 5 years and their offspring mate too? See if you can guess how many and listen to the show to see if you guessed right. The cats may not do Math but this organization sure does and the way they've set up donated money from a cat loving person who passed away is brilliant; they have structured their ads and promotions to allow other cat shelters anywhere in the world to tap into their model and use their platform with their mascot ‘Scooter' the neutered cat to help the cats where they live. So if you want to make a difference for stray cats, cats in shelters and nice cats being euthanized you can go to www.givethemten.org and figure out what will work best for you. You don't need money to make a huge difference. Deborah Wolfe adds cat facts like how cats' sense of taste is different from ours and how many lost cats get found compared to the found lost dogs stats. This provocative session sheds light on the complexities of managing nonprofit organizations in a divided society and offering practical insights into fostering unity and channeling outrage towards constructive outcomes. Through her unconventional methods and business-oriented mindset, Deborah Cribbs, of GiveThemTen.org, demonstrates how even the most contentious issues amongst nonprofits can be tackled with innovation and collaboration. Watch on video!Deborah starts by explaining the origins of her organization, Give Them Ten, which is dedicated to the health and safety of cats in Cincinnati. Despite the seemingly niche focus, her insights quickly reveal broader implications. "We are bankers, we're businesspeople. So, we approach the idea of cat welfare a little differently," Cribbs notes, highlighting how her team's business acumen has influenced their strategies that support nonprofits. The conversation moves towards the concept of the "outrage machine," a term that has become ubiquitous in today's polarized society. Deborah describes this phenomenon, pointing out, "Everybody's outraged about something. And right now, in this great nation, we're all outraged, kind of about the same thing, but on different sides of the fence." She connects this societal trend to her work with animal shelters, illustrating how initial resistance and entrenched competition among shelters were significant hurdles. The discussion intensifies as Deborah recounts the painstaking process of uniting disparate shelter groups into a cohesive coalition. "They saw each other as competitors. Everybody's fighting for the same donor dollar," she explains. Despite this, Deborah and her team managed to foster a spirit of collaboration by emphasizing mutual benefits and leveraging financial incentives. "Once they realized that others could help them solve their problems as an emergency, like kind of in crisis mode... that's the muscle memory that made it sustainable," she describes. The two also explore the role of social media in amplifying both outrage and positive change. Deborah points to the value of professional social media strategies in the nonprofit sector, stating, "It's the least expensive method of communication with the public, and it so happens to be the most effective." Towards the end of the conversation, Deborah addresses the challenge of overcoming fear and division within organizations. She candidly shares her approach: "I'm going to let you say your baggage one more time about each other. If you want to. And actually they did speak up... And then we said no more. We don't want to hear about it anymore." This fast-paced conversation will open your eyes to the possibilities that might be right in front of you already. Racism has been America's lingering cancer. There is no question that great strides have been made in eradicating this evil from our culture since the bad old days of slavery and Jim Crow. But alas, the urgent task is not completed, and as a result, a great divide still lingers among too many Americans based on superficial and irrelevant differences of skin color and hair texture. Listening to each other's stories and understanding differing perspectives are crucial medicines in healing this great wound in our collective national soul. My guest today is an expert communicator in this regard, helping to build bridges and palliate bitterness across racial divides. The Reverand Dr. Arthur Cribbs, Jr. is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, a former network television journalist, radio talk show host, and documentarian. He is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley, obtained his Master's of Divinity from Chicago Theological Seminary in 1986, and his Doctor of Ministry and Ethics from Claremont School of Theology in 2009. Cribbs produced and hosted the television special, “Stories of the Soul: Life after 9/11,” for which he received an Emmy Award. He was nominated for an Emmy for his documentary: Changing Faces of AIDS. He is the former executive director of the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity and has been a long-time ethics instructor for the California Department of Justice working with police departments to improve law enforcement. Due to his many contributions in serving his community, the City of San Diego proclaimed, February30, 2007 as The Reverend Arthur Cribbs Day. Now, Cribbs has written what he calls an “autobiographical novel”—HollyWatts: From the Promised Land to Purgatory, actually a memoir recounting his life growing up in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, where he witnessed the destruction of an important African-American community under the onslaught of drugs, gang violence, and ruling class indifference. Cribbs is currently Senior Pastor of the Christian Fellowship Congregational Church in San Diego, CA. He was also Wesley's college roommate and remains one of his oldest and dearest friends Hollywatts: From the Promised Land to Purgatory: Jr Cribbs, Arthur Lawrence: 9780829800371: Amazon.com: Books R-302356.pdf (sandiego.gov) Life-Giving Acts — Little River United Church of Christ (lrucc.org)

The Veiqia Project is a creative research project inspired by the practice of Fijian female tattooing of veiqia. In 2015 a group of Fijian women based in New Zealand and Australia were brought together to create new works for an exhibition inspired by veiqia (Fijian female tattoo), a practice that was stopped from around the mid-19th century and conducted in secrecy up to the early 20th century. The project involved an online research forum and time spent with Fijian collections in Fiji and New Zealand museums. The exhibition took place at ST PAUL St Gallery in March 2016 for the Auckland Arts Festival and coincided with the PAA XII International Symposium. Four years after their creation - on the 27th April 2019, The Veiqia Project held an event on Dhawaral country at Campbelltown Arts Centre called 'Solevu' - a full day of delicious lovo-making (Fijian earth oven), workshops and talanoa to celebrate the last 18 months of cross-generational Era Yalovata Na Marama program. And due to this event, which Cribbs came across and invited Talica....The 2 Brownish Girls podcast was born. Join Cribbs & Talica and members of The Veiqia Project, Donita, Luisa and Margaret for great interview.

1988 saw the release of two action movies that have become classics of the genre, both of which just happen to have been made by directors named "John" and feature heroes named "John." In a bit of shameless gimmickry, The Pink Smoke's John Cribbs has recruited fellow "John," frequent guest and action movie enthusiast John Arminio for a Patreon-exclusive dive into John McTiernan's Die Hard and John Carpenter's They Live. Cribbs and Arminio have spent hours on The Pink Smoke Podcast going through the James Bond series, but here they examine a more reluctant, blue collar, battle-damaged kind of hero: terrorist-taunting, barefooted, jet-lagged John McClane and alien-spotting, bespectacled, gum-chewing John Nada. Can our host "Johns" find enough common ground between these two iconic warriors to connect the movies beyond their likewise labelled lionhearts? The odds are against them...and that's just the way they like it. This special episode is exclusively available to Pink Smoke patreon subscribers, such as yourself. Based in Meanjin/Brisbane, Jessica Magro is a proud Samoan-Maltese-Australian producer having worked in the industry for the past ten years and is the founder of independent production company Purple Carrot Entertainment, which has a strong focus on Pasifika-led stories. In this episode we unpack Jess' intro to the film/tv industry, the sucky parts of the industry and what made her want to centre Pasifika stories in her career focus. We had such an insightful chat to a wonderful pioneer as a Pasifika woman in film and TV. Please welcome JESSICA MAGRO!!!! Also as mentioned in the episode, please donate your coins to GoFundMe for the House Mother of Alexander, Mother Ella Ganza on her gender affirming surgery: https://www.gofundme.com/f/ellaganza
Dillian (pronounced Dillion) has been fishing his whole life and has found his groove along the Georgia beaches. While he does fish all facets he can in his home state, he broke down how to fish the beach areas with a lot of insider knowledge. We both competed in the Kids Can Fish Running of the Bulls Tournament at St. Simons Island, and he found some good ones while he was out there. The tournament opened my eyes to how they fish there and taught me extremely valuable lessons I use here in Florida (successfully too). He walks us through scouting, spot selection, bait with dirty water, and so much more. Definitely an episode worth listening to fill your own knowledge tacklebox for your area, and if you ever do, head to Georgia beaches to fish. The episode Is Sponsored By: DS Custom Tackle: Tackle Supply for all anglers. Floats, rigs, jigs, bait, and more Bait Check: The Sinker Guy: The Bruno & Mortician rig, Sputnik Sinkers, Sinker pouring supplies, and terminal tackle.Bait Check: Ninja Tackle: Ninja Dagger, 7' Travel Rod, Bummy Stick, Akios reels, rigs, bait, and firearm accessories (optics, Glock parts, attachments, and more) Bait Check: Kids Can Fish Foundation: Kids Can Fish is a state and federally-recognized 501(c)(3) charitable foundation. Welcome back to Season 5 of 2 Brownish Girls, the farewell tour and I am one of your hosts, Cribbs. Happy Gregorian New Year, Lunar New Year and of course, happy 1st episode of the season! It's great to be back and we hope that you've been enjoying some sort of a break or celebrating in the festivities with your loved ones! For the very very first episode, I am joined by someone special in my life and who naturally had the pleasure of co-creating Cribbs herself, and therefore co-creating 2 Brownish Girls, it is none other than my Dad, Father Cribbs also Sonny. Here we spent a sunny summer afternoon just chatting, and getting to learn about my Dad, alongside me as there's a few things I didn't know! Also just want to apologise for the super echoeyness that you hear when I speak…it's giving, amateur editor and recording out of a phone and a microphone vibe but I really enjoyed this short talk and I hope this sparks more conversations with your parents while they're still here. I am so grateful to share this space, that is the podcast that I hold so dear to my heart and to hear him speak about his life.
