RUNDOWN Mitch and Danny bounce from the changing economics of podcasting to baseball's disappearing workhorse pitchers before revisiting area codes and birthday trivia. Along the way, they debate Hall of Fame cases for Wade Boggs, Mike Holmgren, Vince Carter, and Tim Lincecum—while wondering whether "The Freak" could become Cooperstown's greatest omission. Broadcasting from the middle of Knicks mania, Danny gives Mitch a firsthand look at what a title run means in New York. The pair explore why America briefly embraced the Knicks, compare New York fandom to European soccer culture, and debate whether Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs let a championship slip away. The Mariners return home from a disappointing road trip with injuries mounting and the AL West tightening. Mitch, Brady, and Joe sort through Seattle's recent slide, debate lineup and roster decisions involving Cal Raleigh, J.P. Crawford, and Cole Young, and examine bullpen concerns, Matt Brash's durability, and the future of the six-man rotation. Fresh off a 16-day European adventure, Mitch and Puck reflect on the joys and exhaustion of traveling with adult children, from Berlin and Tuscany to Rome and London's Churchill War Rooms. The conversation eventually returns to Seattle, where Andrés Muñoz's struggles and the search for bullpen help dominate the discussion. What makes Pat McAfee worth a reported $60+ million per year to ESPN? Does Kenneth Walker skipping the Seahawks' Super Bowl ring ceremony matter to his legacy in Seattle? If you could choose one, would you take Jacob Misiorowski or Paul Skenes given their talent, contracts, and years of team control? How do you compare Phil Mickelson's fall from grace to Tiger Woods' damaged reputation? Should Mitch Levy be embarrassed that he has absolutely no idea who Mariska Hargitay is?

On May 17, 1998, David Wells showed up to Yankee Stadium having slept maybe two and a half hours, running on coffee, a single pancake, and whatever was left of Saturday night. He then threw the 15th perfect game in Major League Baseball history in front of 49,820 people who were mostly there for a Beanie Baby. That's the story this week. We go deep on the whole thing — the legendary SNL after-party that didn't happen, the cast members who swear they were there and provably weren't, the Mandela Effect that turned one hungover pitcher into baseball mythology, and what Wells actually did in the nine years after the game nobody thought he had left in him. Also in this episode: Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice stop by Letterman to deliver a top 10 list, Steve Garvey turns up as an extra in The Godfather Part II, Wade Boggs earns his nickname on the set of Cheers, and we finally finish that pack of 2003 Topps with Alfonso Soriano, Shawn Green, Al Leiter, and Sean Casey. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! It’s also the World Baseball Classic Championship tonight, and with the regular season starting in just eight days, this is an incredible week for baseball. Tim Kurkjian jumps right in to discuss the Cal Raleigh and Randy Arozarena drama surrounding the handshake that never happened. After the WBC, we’ll be joined by Foul Territory and Blue Bird Territory's Kevin Pillar to recap it all with us. Jeff also makes his pick for a March Madness sleeper this year—maybe not to win it all, but a team he believes can make a run to the Sweet Sixteen. We also hear Tim’s incredible St. Patrick’s Day team and cycle through more baseball cards. Plus, we reveal the results of the All-Robinson vs. All-Johnson matchup that had us debating last week… and let’s just say, we did NOT see this one coming. Thanks for listening and watching. Be sure to follow and subscribe so you don’t miss anything. We’ll be back to three episodes next week, and as tradition goes, Eduardo Perez will join us to help kick off the season.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Send us a textWe began by talking about the best HOFers that did not make the HOF. Not hitting as many home runs hurt the chances of Derek Jeter, Wade Boggs, and Tony Gwynn all of whom did not win an MVP. Manny Ramirez did hit a lot of HRs never won an MVP, but he's also not a HOFer. Mike Piazza never won an MVP finishing second twice. Dylan Cease got the big bucks for seven years while Sonny Gray got $41M for one year. Pitchers get paid in different ways but long term deals have been harder to get for pitchers. Now Framber Valdez is smiling. Nine managers were selected to replace ones not coming back. Warren Schaeffer the latest as he signed on with the #Rockies. Good luck. We talked about the others who'd already taken the job. And then there's the #Mets. We go unit by unit although we did not talk about catcher Francisco Alvarez. Is there a way for the team to compete for a pennant in 2026? They have work to do. Will Francisco Lindor be named team captain? Juan Soto does not seem to want the job. Fortunately there is still time pre-season to continue to change the team after trading Brandon Nimmo for Gold Glove 2B Marcus Semien. Then there's time until the trading deadline too!Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! Check them out on Spotify or Apple Music! Bill Bevens came within one out of throwing the first World Series no-hitter in Game 4. Also, a look at the pennant and wild card races plus some 1988 Topps baseball cards.Errata: The Giants were 14-14 in August, 9-15 in July. In the second half so far, Texas is 24-19, Seattle is 22-21 and Houston is 20-23. San Diego went 23-43 after the All-Star Break in 2021 and for some reason Craig thinks they collapse like this every year. San Diego was 43-20 in the second half in 2024. Pete Reiser won the NL batting title in 1941, not 1945. Craig was thinking of Mickey Mahler when he should have been thinking of Mike Mason. Wade Boggs played 5 seasons for the Yankees before going to Tampa; he also admitted to drinking 73 beers on a flight, not 57. Clint Hurdle turned down a football scholarship to the University of Miami, but he turned it down to sign with the Royals. Marc Malusis and Jon Morosi delve into the storied career of Wade Boggs, sharing behind-the-scenes stories from his journey from the Red Sox to the Yankees and his eventual enshrinement in Cooperstown. The conversation then shifts to the current state of New York baseball, with Morosi praising the Mets' recent performance and expressing his belief that they are a "dangerous" team heading into the postseason. He contrasts their potential with the Yankees' inconsistent play, noting the wide-open nature of the current MLB landscape and the unpredictability of this year's playoff race for both teams.

Ellen Adair and Eric Gilde discuss the 2002 Disney film "The Rookie." They introduce the film (2:02), with an overview of the story, the cast, and filmmakers, and review the 20-80 baseball scouting grades for rating the film (5:07). Amount of Baseball (13:02) revels in this embarrassment of riches, and the excellence of the District Championship Game. Baseball Accuracy (20:35) cites Jim Morris's own opinion of the film's accuracy, and his relationship to his father, along with the radar sign scene, and the St. Rita story. There are oil rig gameplay questions. Did he try out in jeans? Did his dad get the baseball? Steve Cox erasure and some other accuracies with Jim Morris's MLB debut, Royce Clayton's foul ball, Morris pitching "for two seasons," and his tryout in the rain. The scouts also discuss his teammates Jose Canseco, Wade Boggs, and Kevin Stocker, the 1999 Devil Rays. The casting of the RuffNecks is hilarious, including the batter Carlton Fisk-ing the ball in the wrong direction. Randy Quaid's pitching motion, plus smart use of his pitching double Jeff Dowdy. Eric fact-checks Texas distances, and there is an Ellen Adair Breakdown on pitchers hitting 98 MPH in 1999 and today (h/t Nick Pollack). Can Ellen name more than five who threw more than 98 MPH in 99? Storytelling (49:34) dissects the interesting film structure created by its central bargain, the function of the nuns, and the Disney veneer balanced with excellent editing and cinematography. Ellen appreciates attention being paid to the football/baseball disparity, and both laud the excellent storytelling with the early scene with the father. But where is the middle child for the first hour of the film? They discuss the first minor league game sequence, the child's questions about the Devil Rays, and the relief pitcher as hero (w/r/t Seranthony Dominguez, JoJo Romero and Ranger Suarez). Brief St. Patrick's Day Accuracy. Score (1:11:22) addresses Carter Burwell's use of flute and John Bissell's music supervision, including Guy Clark's "Stuff That Works," Willie Nelson's "Nothing I Can Do About It Now," Elvis Presley's "Run On," and House of Pain's "Jump Around." Acting (1:17:14) discusses the performances of Dennis Quaid, Rachel Griffiths, Brian Cox, Angus T. Jones and Blue Deckert. Delightfulness of Catcher (1:21:24) praises the perfect catcher behavior of Owls catcher Joel de la Garza, along with great acting by Angelo Spizzirri. The catcher at the try-out and at Jim Morris's debut also do not disappoint. Delightfulness of Announcer (1:24:56) considers the benefits of the announcer being a character in the rest of the film, and the great performance by David Blackwell. Good storytelling with the Orlando Rays announcer. Lack of Misogyny (1:27:32) considers the strength of Lori the character versus her story function, and some disappointment on the gendered role of the children and the impetus for Lori's reversal. No spoilers on the following segments: Yes or No (1:33:01), Six Degrees of Baseball (1:38:59), Favorite Moment (1:40:58) Least Favorite Moment (1:42:08), Scene We Would Have Liked to See (1:44:30), Dreamiest Player (1:46:44), Favorite Performance (1:47:42), and Next Time (1:49:03).
