Don't Kill the Messenger with movie research expert Kevin Goetz
Send Kevin a Text MessageIn this episode of Don't Kill the Messenger, host Kevin Goetz brings together three of his top focus group moderators from Screen Engine to reveal the secrets behind their craft during the filmmaking stage of movie testing. Terri Cavanaugh (VP of Qualitative Insights), Ari Virgil-Paige (Executive VP of the Movie Group), and Aaron Feuer (VP of the Movie Group) reveal how honest audience feedback helps filmmakers perfect their vision. What Makes Focus Groups Essential (01:43) The moderators explain why there's no substitute for hearing verbally from audiences and how focus groups add crucial nuance beyond quantitative data. The Magic First Question (02:28) Aaron reveals the power of asking "Can you give me a word or phrase to describe what you just saw?" and how those initial responses catalyze entire conversations. What Makes a Great Moderator (06:39) The team discusses essential qualities, including curiosity, intuition that can't be taught, and the ability to read a room while multitasking through multiple layers of observation. The Most Important Question (13:24) Each moderator shares their approach to the one question they'd ask if limited to just one, revealing different philosophies about serving the client versus finding truth.Dealing with Naysayers (18:11) The moderators address criticism head-on, explaining why they're advocates for the audience, not critics looking to serve their agendas.Handling Difficult Respondents (26:59) Practical advice on managing disruptive participants, from body language techniques to knowing when to remove someone entirely.Building Trust Quickly (30:22) Techniques for engaging audiences immediately, from working with shy kids to using strategic authenticity to create safe spaces for honest feedback.Filmmaker Appreciation (35:00) Stories of working with receptive movie directors like Peter Farrelly, Paul Feig, Matt Damon, and the Russo Brothers, who embrace the process and see research as a valuable tool. The Art of the Nugget (40:54) How one small audience insight can crack the code and solve major story problems, with examples of breakthrough moments that transformed films. These moderators demonstrate that great focus group leadership combines theatrical instincts, detective curiosity, and empathy for both audiences and filmmakers. Their stories reveal the delicate balance of extracting truth while respecting the creative process. Please leave us a review and share our podcast with others. ICYMI, this episode aired in March of this year. In this episode, I dive into the latest pop culture news. We discussed Christine Brown's upcoming memoir and the mixed reactions it's receiving, as well as the drama surrounding her Instagram comments. I also provided updates on the ongoing "It Ends With Us" lawsuit involving Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, and the curious case of Brandon Sklenar's brooch. We touched on the tragic deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife due to a rare rat-borne illness, and I passionately supported the "Free Wendy" movement for Wendy Williams. This week, the whole gang is back together! Yay! Evan and Megan start out by reviewing Paul Feig's whodunnit dark comedy, ANOTHER SIMPLE FAVOR (2:33), a sequel to you guessed it, A SIMPLE FAVOR. While it retains the crackling chemistry between its leads, Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, the movie doesn't have much going for it other than its gorgeous location and fashions; its writing and dialogue are abysmal, and it's glacially paced. Next, we all discuss Eli Craig's horror film CLOWN IN A CORNFIELD (19:43), which is set in a small midwestern town that's terrorized by a killer clown in a cornfield. There's a lot more to this slasher than it seems from the title; it's well-paced, funny, features memorable kills, and has smart social commentary. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Drew Hancock's sci-fi thriller COMPANION, starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid!
Hosts Kevin Schwaller and Ema Sasic head to Capri with Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively in Paul Feig's "Another Simple Favor," the sequel to the iconic 2018 film. Then they recap their highlights and lowlights of the 2025 Met Gala and its theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." Will Ashton returns with a solo Instant Take on Another Simple Favor, the Amazon Prime sequel to Paul Feig’s 2018 suburban noir comedy-thriller A Simple Favor. With Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively reprising their roles, this follow-up heads to Italy for a destination wedding filled with secrets, frenemy tension, and stylish intrigue. Will breaks down what works—and what fizzles—in this second helping. Despite a few fun twists and an appealing setting in Capri, the film struggles to recapture the charm of the original. Kendrick’s character lacks clear evolution, while Lively’s return, though enjoyable, can’t quite carry the film through its sillier and more uneven second half. With vibes that feel more White Lotus than Gone Girl, Another Simple Favor tries to balance camp, crime, and couture. Will questions whether this sequel really needed to exist at all, comparing it to other lackluster follow-ups (The Whole Ten Yards, anyone?) that get the gang back together but forget the plot. If you were a fan of the first film, there are still some moments of cheeky fun—like a memorable truth serum scene—but overall, this one might leave you regretting asking for more. This week our hosts Josh and Jade review the Amazon Prime film, Another Simple Favor, the sequel to the film A Simple Favor (2018). The comedy is directed by Paul Feig and written by Jessica Sharzer and Laeta Kalogridis. The film stars Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, and Henry Golding, Elizabeth Perkins, and Allison Janney. In their new format, Josh and Jade discuss highlights from the film, the Justin Baldoni / Blake Lively lawsuit that hung as a cloud over production, and the plot holes throughout the film. Smash that play button and enjoy!
Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of May 2, 2025. Summer movie season unofficially gets underway this week with the release of "Thunderbolts*" from Marvel/Disney. If you like the characters or you just like Marvel movies, you'll probably enjoy this. Another movie, this time on Amazon Prime Video, is "Another Simple Favor" from Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, and director Paul Feig. Hint, this sequel to the crime comedy ‘A Simple Favor' is goofy fun. And on Netflix, there is a comedy series called "The Four Seasons" from Steve Carell, Tina Fey, and Colman Domingo that's a remake of an old Alan Alda movie, but highly enjoyable for the more (ahem) mature viewer. The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. It had to happen: the Empire podcast has finally gone to hell — quite literally in this case, as this particular show is episode 666. Perhaps appropriately, James is in the driving seat for this one, embracing this demonically anointed episode to bring you such thematically-relevant discussions as a Mount Rushmore of movie Satans and an off-topic discussion as to why subtitles are also the devil's work. But that's not all, because while Chris isn't here in body, having hopped over to Ireland for a few rounds of golf, he is here in spirit, not least of all as he interviews all of this week's guests, specifically three of the Thunderbolts — Hannah John-Kamen, Wyatt Russell and David Harbour (approx 57:36-1:13:09)— Another Simple Favour director Paul Feig (approx 11:21-23:48), and Ryan Coogler (at the very end) in a little tease of our Sinners spoiler special episode, which is available now on the Spoiler Specials subscription feed. Joining James and Helen this week is John ‘The Nuge' Nugent, who does his best to justify his three-star review of Thunderbolts*, plus we review Another Simple Favour, Paolo Sorrentino's Parthenope, and Die Hard in the Docklands film Cleaner.
Is the CIA agent hard at work? Another Simple Favor director Paul Feig calls Blake Lively "very sweet;" says she's "nothing" like her character, as the press continues to flood positive stories about her. Vanderpump Rules alum Brittany Cartwright is throwing shade at ex Jax Taylor, slamming his bedroom performance! Plus, a Full House feud? Jodi Sweetin talks fall-out with Candace Cameron Bure. "Another Simple Favor" had its world premiere at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its sharp writing, juicy performances, and delicious costume design. Continuing the story from 2018's "A Simple Favor," director Paul Feig and stars Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, Andrew Rannells, and Henry Golding, all returned, along with new faces and a new setting in Capri Italy for the Amazon Prime Video release. The result is a bigger movie in nearly every regard, with plenty of twists and turns in Stephanie and Emily's relationship. Feig was kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Vanguardistas have more fun—so if you don't already subscribe to the podcast, join the Vanguard today via Apple Podcasts or extratakes.com for non-fruit-related devices. In return you'll get a whole extra Take 2 alongside Take 1 every week, with bonus reviews, more viewing recommendations from the Good Doctors and whole bonus episodes just for you. And if you're already a Vanguardista, we salute you. The 50th anniversary re-release of ‘Slade in Flame' is making Mark very happy this week, and he'll be reviewing this “Citizen Kane of rock movies” at the top of the show to celebrate. Starring the real-life Black Country glam rockers as the fictional band Flame, it follows their rapid rise and fall via record company clashes that reveal the darker side of the music industry. Plus, new (and new-ish) releases ‘Thunderbolts*', the Marvel anti-hero ensemble starring Florence Pugh, and ‘Sinners'—Ryan Coogler's 1930s southern gothic tale of two twin brothers coming face to face with evil when they return to their Mississippi hometown in search of a new start. It came out while we were on our holibobs, so we're catching up this week with a full review and some top takes from those of you who have seen it already. ‘Another Simple Favor' is out this week too—and we've got director Paul Feig, also known for ‘Bridesmaids', ‘Spy' and, yes, the all-female Ghostbusters remake—on the show to talk Simon through it. A follow-up to the 2018 hit ‘A Simple Favor', it sees Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick reprise their roles in a genre-mashing comedy-mystery-crime-thriller, this time on the isle of Capri. Feig talks power dressing, breaking his no-sequels rule, and how that Blue Origin all-female space flight could definitely be straight out of one of his movies. Mark reviews it too—and we also hear plenty from you wonderful wittertainees, including your takes on Mark's ‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith' review. Enjoy! In this episode, we dove into the latest pop culture news. We discussed Christine Brown's upcoming memoir and the mixed reactions it's receiving, as well as the drama surrounding her Instagram comments. I also provided updates on the ongoing "It Ends With Us" lawsuit involving Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, and the curious case of Brendan Skelnar's brooch. We touched on the tragic deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife due to a rare rat-borne illness, and I passionately supported the "Free Wendy" movement for Wendy Williams. People climbing to be number one. How do they do it? What is the fundamental difference between us and them? Visit thisamericanlife.org/lifepartners to sign up for our premium subscription.Prologue: Ira Glass talks with Paul Feig, who, as a sixth-grader, at the urging of his father, actually read the Dale Carnegie classic How to Win Friends and Influence People. He found that afterward, he had a bleaker understanding of human nature—and even fewer friends than when he started. (9 minutes)Act One: David Sedaris has this instructive tale of how, as a boy, with the help of his dad, he tried to bridge the chasm that divides the popular kid from the unpopular — with the sorts of results that perhaps you might anticipate. (14 minutes)Act Two: After the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, U.S. diplomats had to start working the phones to assemble a coalition of nations to combat this new threat. Some of the calls, you get the feeling, were not the easiest to make. Writer and performer Tami Sagher imagines what those calls were like. (6 minutes)Act Three: To prove this simple point—a familiar one to readers of any women's magazines—we have this true story of moral instruction, told by Luke Burbank in Seattle, about a guy he met on a plane dressed in a hand-sewn Superman costume. (13 minutes)Act Four: Jonathan Goldstein with a story about what it's like to date Lois Lane when she's on the rebound from Superman.
