Long Island Crimes And Naming Every Town On Long Island

Tom Kelly and Steve Burgerer riff on Long Island "victimless crimes," fake service dogs, loud motorcycles, e-bikes, bad parking etiquette, walkable towns, and whether naming every town on Long Island could somehow become viral content. The episode eventually turns into a full-on Long Island town naming marathon inspired by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Jimmy Fallon — with debates over which towns are real, which ones sound fake, and why every Long Islander secretly wants to hear their hometown mentioned. Tom also talks about comedy, podcasting, audience behavior, Andy Kaufman-style performance art, and an awkward comedy dating show featuring 9/11 jokes gone wrong. If you love Long Island culture, local humor, Massapequa references, Eisenhower Park, Nassau County chaos, and two comedians arguing about whether "Village of the Branch" is a real place… this episode is for you.

Screenwriting Legends SCOTT ALEXANDER and LARRY KARASZEWSKI discuss their origin stories of being film nerds, drive-in movies, how looking on the back of Variety was glorious when they were kids, how Shakey's Pizza's silent movies influenced them, meeting the first hour at school and deciding to go to the Nuart Theater in Los Angeles, why they program screenings including The Wrong Guy, what makes a good story from real life, why offbeat losers make better subjects than heroes, how directors like Tim Burton are loyal to the script and love stories of art and outsiders, why awards are fun but stupid, their process of deciding on ideas in a shockingly random way, sinking time into ideas that go nowhere, the amazing Marx Brothers movie that can't seem to get made, how they can't shake a movie once they love it, how producers are just as stupid as they are, whether everyone has a movie in their lives and why someone doesn't make a bio movie about them, and how pickleball can save your life! Bio:SCOTT ALEXANDER and LARRY KARASZEWSKI met when they were freshman roommates at USC's School of Cinema. On a whim, they wrote a screenplay during their senior year, which sold a week after graduation. They are best known for writing very unusual biopics with larger-than-life characters. They wrote the highly-acclaimed ED WOOD, for which they were nominated for Best Screenplay by the Writers Guild. They followed this with THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, for which they won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay, as well as a special Writers Guild award for civil rights and liberties. They scripted the extremely postmodern MAN ON THE MOON, the life story of Andy Kaufman. They wrote BIG EYES, the strange-but-true story of Margaret and Walter Keane, for which they received an Indie Spirit Best Screenplay nomination. For their first television project, they created the hit miniseries AMERICAN CRIME STORY: THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON, for which they won the Emmy, Golden Globe, PGA and WGA Award for Best Limited Series. Their most recent film, DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, is the celebrated tale of Rudy Ray Moore. Other than biopics, Alexander and Karaszewski are quite eclectic. They wrote the hit Stephen King adaptation 1408. They produced the Bob Crane biopic AUTO FOCUS, and they wrote and directed the comedy SCREWED. They have also written numerous family films, including PROBLEM CHILD, PROBLEM CHILD 2, AGENT CODY BANKS, and GOOSEBUMPS. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Outer Limits Of Inner Truth

Outer Limits Of Inner Truth

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2026 45:05

Dr. Andrew Kaufman appears on Outer Limits of Inner Truth to discuss terrain theory, the mind body connection, and personal health autonomy. He begins with the period when fear dominated public life, sharing his observations about how institutions leaned on it to override individual rights, then moves into his central medical argument, that the body operates on its internal terrain and inner state far more than on outside invaders. The strongest and most substantive stretch of the interview is the mind body material, where Kaufman draws on the adverse childhood experiences research linking early trauma to chronic disease in adulthood, explains the nocebo effect using the example of patients who developed chemotherapy side effects after receiving only a saline solution, and argues that unresolved emotional conflict can physically obstruct the body's ability to heal itself. The second half turns to the everyday inputs Kaufman believes shape long term health. He makes a detailed case for real, local, seasonal, minimally processed food, reasoning both from the composition of the human body and from medical anthropology describing populations before colonization who lived largely free of chronic disease. He raises concerns about seed oils, the role of chronic stress and cortisol, and what he calls obesogens, the persistent environmental toxins and forever chemicals such as DDT and PCBs that researchers have found stored in human fat for decades. Kaufman also shares his perspective on conventional medicine and alternative approaches to treatment, and frames the entire conversation around the idea of becoming your own doctor and refusing to outsource your judgment. He closes by pointing listeners to the free resources on his website, including his detox protocol and his masterclass on handling medical situations at home. Website: https://medauthentica.com/ ----- Dr. Andy Kaufman, a "recovering physician," transitioned from a prestigious mainstream medical career to challenge conventional paradigms. Trained in allopathic medicine, his journey of questioning traditional principles led him to become a dynamic educator and speaker. Dr. Andy shares insights on medicine, viruses, and natural healing, while exploring interconnected fields like economics, law, and science, offering a holistic perspective that inspires critical thinking. With a Bachelor of Science in Biology from MIT, an MD from the University of South Carolina, and a psychiatric residency at Duke University, Dr. Andy has held academic leadership roles, contributed to research, and patented a medical device. Now, he dedicates himself to researching and delivering trustworthy products and protocols, empowering health-seekers to achieve optimal wellness. Alex Braverman is a filmmaker who has directed and produced acclaimed documentaries, including the 2023 film THANK YOU VERY MUCH, a fascinating portrait of the great Andy Kaufman. I first discovered Alex's work through THANK YOU VERY MUCH, which is currently on MUBI, and immediately wanted to talk to him about Kaufman, documentary filmmaking, and the strange blurred line between performance, truth, comedy, and reality. We talked about Alex's early work as a documentary cameraman, including MAKING MARINES, the making of THANK YOU VERY MUCH, the Safdie brothers coming on as producers, Andy Kaufman's obsession with confusing and challenging audiences, and why documentary filmmaking is often truly built in the edit. We also discussed STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT: UNLOCKING THE TRUTH, which Alex produced, the current state of documentary filmmaking, and the importance of cutting material that does not serve the story. Alex also shares two of his favorite movie scenes from THE HEARTBREAK KID and Bennett Miller's THE CRUISE.

Met Gala: Drew didn't see many people that looked like him at the event. Blake Lively SNAPPED at helpers. Timothée Chalamet skipped the event for the New York Knicks game. Blue Ivy was a total brat. Blake Lively is falling fast. Her Betty Booze alcohol is a joke. Justin Baldoni is soft… but he's the winner in the battle. Popcorned Planet has the story covered. Andy Kaufman was a legendary wrestler. We check out his musical number on The Midnight Special. Drew recommends the Thank You Very Much documentary. John Mellencamp has great stage banter and a giant head. Franki Valli's son is a menace. Drew spent 45 minutes without a cell phone. It was a stressful day. The Cult of NatureBoy is the latest wild doc on Hulu. The Devil Wears Prada 2 made a lot of money at the box office, but not as much as Michael. Drew is yearning for comedies, dramas and Hugh Grant rom-coms. Geese is totally an industry plant. Is Greta Van Fleet finished? They posted cryptic social media posts. Stefon Diggs is not guilty of strangling his chef… who he was also banging. McDonald's is under attack! Seattle has an interesting mayor. We go on a Jerry Seinfeld deep dive thanks to the work of Wassup with Lordbuckly?. Shannon Elizabeth now has complete agency over her body… but very little agency over her money. Awhile back, during our Season Five look back, we wanted to do a "Deep Thoughts" episode on the Andy Kaufman special, Andy's Funhouse, which aired in the summer of 1979 (though it was filmed back in 1977). We were very excited to get into it with such an iconic performer and one of his biggest showcases. We even had a guest lined up—a proclaimed "expert" on Andy Kaufman. Sadly, the day of recording, our guest ghosted us.We had two choices—postpone the recording and try to reschedule with our unprofessional guest or just push on and record with two guys who have only a surface-level knowledge of Andy Kaufman, skimped on the research (since they were supposed to have an expert on the show), but did spend the time watching the special. We decided to press on, by ourselves, and record our own look back on the special. At the end of the day, we chose not to put the episode out. Not because the episode isn't good (we think it is) but because it wasn't AS GOOD as it could have been. But, in going through the vaults of stuff we have after the end of "The Early Years of SNL," we thought it would be fun to share now.So enjoy our look back on the very first Andy Kaufman television special that is at times very interesting, at other times very befuddling, and at many times very entertaining. Andy brings back many (if not all) of his classic bits and welcomes guest stars like Cindy Williams, Howdy Doody, and Wendy Polland (who?).This was actually a lot of fun.---------------------------------Subscribe & Follow today! And follow us on social media: Twitter: @NR4PTProject Instagram: @nr4ptprojectBluesky: @nr4ptproject.bsky.socialFacebook: The Not Ready for Prime Time ProjectContact Us: Website: https://www.nr4project.comEmail: nr4ptproject@gmail.com

I've known comedian/writer/animal activist Elayne Boosler for a couple of decades, but there's so much I didn't know! We got loads of juicy bits from the woman who pioneered stand-up comedy for all who followed in her wake. From her earliest days at The Improv in New York, a waitress/hostess, who needed Andy Kaufman's help to differentiate the brown drinks, to her love/hate relationship with proprietor, Bud Friedman, swooning over 20-year-old Richard Lewis, MC'ing without an act or a net, singing and then not thanks to now partner Andy, who Elayne credits with teaching her “everything.” Tom Waits? Who knew! We got a great story there. Robin Williams, to Bill Siddons, her husband of 30 years, with whom she shares a home in Italy, and a great line to sum up the current state of their union. We got lots on Italy, the when, where, why, and how. Elayne was always a must-see for me whenever she appeared on TV, and hugely impactful when I tried my hands and feet at standup. I could never be as smart, but she gave me permission to let my sass shine. A fan for decades, it was a pinch-me moment when we met on the Facebook and became instant friends. It translated to the reals not long after, over pizza in New York, and sometime after that, with Elayne gracing my living room for Women Who Write. It's taken 10 years to get this sit down, she was well worth the wait. Despite a couple of tech glitches, I adored every moment, and I'm so grateful for all the laughs, so needed now. I'm about to do a YouTube Elayne deep dive and continue to lose myself in her brilliant shine. Elayne Boosler Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Wed, April 8th, 5 pm PT, 8 pm ET

What happens when a dream crossover forgets the story? We dig into WWE's Stranger Things night and explain why a themed set without narrative or talent cameos felt like a letdown—plus the simple, feasible beats that could have delivered a true Upside Down moment. From entrance ideas to atmospheric teases and a Wyatt Six-ready tone, we lay out a blueprint for crossovers that serve the wrestling, not just the brand.Along the way, we contrast AEW's pacing and match-first approach, highlighted by a suplex-heavy showcase from Shelton Benjamin and the kind of card flow that keeps viewers glued. We also wade into the Chris Jericho rumor mill, what his renewed conditioning might signal, and whether a surprise return could land at a Royal Rumble staged abroad. The bigger takeaway: locker room culture shows up on TV, and fans spot it instantly. Then we tackle the fault line between kayfabe and transparency. A new docuseries promo drops the word “scripted,” and we ask where the line should be. Is it lying to protect the mystique, or honoring the craft that makes the magic work? With Bill Apter's insider memories—including the midnight spark that helped ignite Andy Kaufman's Memphis run—this conversation threads history, present stakes, and the choices that shape how wrestling feels on screen.Hit play, share your booking fixes for the crossover, and tell us where you stand on kayfabe vs. candor. Colin Fisher: The Collective Edge Since his days as a professional jazz trumpet player, Colin Fisher has been fascinated by group dynamics. Today, he is an Associate Professor of Organizations and Innovation at University College London's School of Management, researching the hidden processes of helping groups and teams in situations requiring creativity, improvisation, and complex decision-making. He is the author of The Collective Edge: Unlocking the Secret Power of Groups (Amazon, Bookshop). Most of us assume that the best thing we can do for our teams is to be a great coach as they're working together. That absolutely helps, but the research says that only 10% of group effectiveness is what we do once the team is underway. In this conversation, Colin and I explore how to get a lot better at the other 90%. Key Points The house always wins. If the structure isn't right for the team to succeed, little else matters in the long run. Leaders tend to put a majority of their attention on coaching teams in progress instead of the more significant work at the start of structuring and launching teams. Work on fixing structural problems before you focus on fixing the process. 60% of group effectiveness is determined by structure, 30% by the launch, and 10% by expert coaching. Critical for structure is the team goal being clear, important, and challenging. Be sure to document it. Negotiate roles, tasks, and jobs to support structure. Determine early how to articulate progress and highlight small wins. Ask yourself if the group has the right people to achieve the objective. Deep diversity that supports the goal is essential. Surface discussions about norms at the start, especially related to communication and storage of information. At a team launch, articulate why everyone is there, discuss key norms, and schedule a midpoint to reflect and align.
