POPULARITY
In this week's episode it's the debut of 'Cannon Fodder', a recurring series of episodes where I watch a curated selection of films made by schlockmeisters Golan/Globus in the 1980's for their Cannon Film Group, one of the most entertaining production shingles you'll ever hear or see. In Brad's view, he is a man of the people's cinema and I am a high-minded, opinionated cinephile. Duly diagnosed, I agreed to expand my horizons under Brad's careful tutelage. The result is either an epic argument or filled with surprises...or both. Here's a great must-see documentary about the "Go-Go Boys" as they're known. Here's some info about my frequent guest Brad Kane. Watch '10 to Midnight' Here's the Cannon Group's wiki page.
Actor Kathy Baker joins the podcast this week for a very special episode about her 1988 film 'Clean and Sober'. Director Glenn Gordon Caron probably needed a stiff drink or 20 after coming off the tumultuous four-season run of 'Moonlighting' with its famously fractious co-stars. Instead he chose to direct one of the most underappreciated film gems of the 80's in 'Clean and Sober', co-produced by Ron Howard and starring Michael Keaton, Kathy Baker, Morgan Freeman, and M Emmet Walsh in the story of a commercial real estate broker spiralling into...and reluctantly out of...cocaine and alcohol addiction. Incisively ritten by Tod Carroll, a National Lampoon writer with only two other film credits to date, 'Clean and Sober' was Keaton's first foray into a non-comedic film role, a fact that caused the studio some consternation at the time. Freeman and Baker were coming off of award-winning roles in 'Street Smart', a Golan-Globus production about a NYC journalist intertwined with a pimp and prostitute, and everyone in the cast of 'Clean and Sober' turned in absolutely phenomenal performances...even Oscar-worthy performances...yet the studio didn't really know how to market or release a film they considered hard-to-define and after only 3 weeks of a summetime release, the film was largely abandoned in the marketplace. In this special episode of the Full Cast and Crew podcast, I talk with Kathy Baker about her indelible role as Charlie, her experiences making the film, and her approaches to acting and the collaborative nature of filmmaking. Join us as we spend some well-deserved time giving 'Clean and Sober' its due as still the best film ever made about the tricky early days of sobriety and digging into Kathy's experiences making the film.
Jeremy and Boss form a supergroup, eat porno craft services, discover the legendary creature Golan-Globus, and bring Neil Young back to Spotify as they discuss Carlos Tobalina's Undulations.
Special guest Seth Goodkind joins us to discuss the iconic Charles Bronson, specifically the time in his career when he made movies for Golan/Globus that were directed by J. Lee Thompson. It wasn't exactly the prime of his career...or was it? No. 10 TO MIDNIGHT (1983, J. Lee Thompson) MURPHY'S LAW (1986, J. Lee Thompson) KINJITE: FORBIDDEN SUBJECTS (1989, J. Lee Thompson)

SIDE HUSTLE 13. Norman Mailer: TOUGH GUYS DON'T DANCE and CREMASTER 2Every ranking must have its worst, and this week's episode aims to shoot to the bottom of the Season X bucket with Norman Mailer as our chosen actor-director. TGTPTU welcomes back its junior cohost Jack after a long hiatus to join us on this atrocity to good sense as we cover two unwatchable films: the first, TOUGH GUYS DON'T DANCE (1987), nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards and seven Golden Raspberries and unwatchable for its wildly shifting tones throughout melodramatic flashbacks within flashbacks, and the second, CREMASTER 2 (1999), the gorgeously shot fourth entry in artist Matthew Barney's five-part Cremaster Cycle unwatchable as its viewing restricted to art museums and its limited series DVDs selling for $100k. Shot on location in Provincetown, the occasionally great Ryan O'Neal (Barry Lyndon, Paper Moon) plays Tim Madden in the Mailer written and directed, Golan-Globus production of Tough Guys Don't Dance. The 80's fever dream makes both St. Elmo's Fire and The Bonfire of the Vanities feel rewatchable as protagonist Tim Madden parades through amnesia, flashbacks, adultery, and homophobic reactions in a convoluted plot involving alcohol, triple-crosses, swingers, murder, cocaine, psychics, swingers, alcohol, cocaine, tattoos, cocaine, and swingers with a little sex and booze and Columbian marching powder sprinkled in. While Mailer had directed three improvisational movies in the 1960s (including that one where Mailer bit off a piece of Rip Torn's ear), Tough Guys Don't Dance demonstrates why it was Mailer's first and only narrative film to direct. Also bypassing narrative conventions, Björk's ex- (their breakup the subject of her 2015 album Vulnicura) a.k.a. artist/director Matthey Barney's filmic work traverses worlds alchemic and ordinary and was well worth the plane ticket to bring TGTPTU's three hosts back together for a screening of the film at the museum where it was showing that one time around when the recording happened and definitely not a pirated copy of this impossible to rent or purchase film. Follow our hosts' dulcet voices as we recount the film's nearly wordless journey from séance to bees covering in a woman in a plexiglass corset penetrated by a large phallus to a death metal drummer covered in bees on the phone with a gas station attendant the latter of whom will be killed by Gary Gilmore (played by Barney, subject of Mailer's Executioner Song) before the camera heads to a chanting city and a rodeo before heading into a warehouse for a magic show. Norman Mailer plays Harry Houdini and his performance, well, we'd normally ask you to judge for yourself but there's no way in hell you're ever seeing this film, so your loss. So listen along as we describe one film you don't want to—and another you can't—watch. This week's show will leave you yelling heavenwards alongside Tim Madden in Tough Guys Don't Dance after he discovers his wife is having an affair: “Oh Man! Oh God! Oh Man! Oh God! Oh Man! Oh God! Oh Man! Oh God! Oh Man! Oh God!”THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096
Diving deep into the ‘80s filmography of one of our favorite actors, we discuss the unique performance style of Christopher Walken; his sense of humor, sense of menace, skills as a dancer, the many commercial failures he made as a leading man during this decade, and why we think all his '80s movies are all worthy of revisiting. Along the way, we get into many cultural aspects of the decade: Madonna power ballads, the Roger Moore era of James Bond, Golan-Globus fairly tale musicals, pre-CGI special effects, actors who say "yes" to every role, and real-life alien abductions.
Matthew Socey has a chat with the hosts of the action film podcast Golan-Globus Theater, reviews the film Golda, and raises a glass to Terry Funk.

This is the first part of Play That Rock'n'Roll's interview with author Austin Trunick, which is a discussion about his book, "The Cannon Film Guide, Volume I (1980 - 1984)". In this first part of the interview, we give some backstory on what Cannon Films is, and then we discuss some of the movies Cannon produced before they were bought by Menahem Golan & Yorum Globus. We then move to the Golan & Globus era of Cannon, which includes their longstanding relationship with actor Charles Bronson, and their surprisingly heartfelt teen sex comedy, "The Last American Virgin". Acomi and Turk182 try their hand at movie making the Cannon Films way. The Cannon Group, Inc., also known as Golan-Globus films, made low budget action movies in the 1980s. As shown in the documentary Electric Boogaloo, Cannon Films had an interesting way of making movies. Instead of using movie posters to create their movie, Acomi and Turk use a random title generator and make up movies based on the title. Tell us which ones you like and send us $50.00, and we'll start filming! Note: Don't send us any money. Ever! So I know this goes without saying but for this episode we continue the current trend of social distancing to protect ourselves, others and in some small way, combat the current Coronavirus pandemic. So it is that Mitch, Andy and our guest find themselves isolated in their respective houses, three-way Skyping. We have never tried this before... So, to the guest then! She is one of the driving forces behind our pals at Hex Media. She is also a producer and writer of films such as LORD OF TEARS, THE UNKINDNESS OF RAVENS, THE BLACK GLOVES and THE DEVIL'S MACHINE... It's Sarah Daly! Her chosen film? Invaders From Mars! A Tobe Hooper film? A Cannon Picture? Sign me up! YES! We are going back to 1988 for a film made as part of Hooper's multi-picture deal with Golan/Globus which also saw him direct Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Lifeforce! This is one of the only films in Hooper's oeuvre that can reasonably be called a kid's film BUT is it? Invaders From Mars is a fun-little remake of the 1953 film of the same name which stars Karen Black (House of 1000 Corpses), Louise Fletcher (One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) and James Karen (Return of The Living Dead). The synopsis is as follows: Little David Gardner’s starry-eyed dreams turn into an out-of-this-world nightmare when invaders from the red planet land in his backyard and unleash their hostilities on unsuspecting earthlings! Paralyzed with fear as the aliens take over the minds of his mom, dad and even his schoolmates, David must somehow find a way to stop them: before they turn the whole human race into brain-dead zombies! Cannon Films and Golan-Globus productions push out this ultra-patriotic film in the middle of the 1980s whereby American elite commandos kick major butt when trying to secure the freedom of a plane full of hostages hijacked by a group of Lebanese terrorists. Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin head the super-soldiers to action on the hope of saving not only as many lives as they can, but their own reputation after a botched mission sees them go down in disgrace, they feel, due to bureaucratic missteps. Menahem Golan directs this quintessentially jingoistic but gloriously unabashed entry in the Chuck Norris filmography.

Episode 19 sees Andy and Mitch joined by film/music/comic book journalist and soon-to-be author of a book on British horror films, Jules Boyle. His chosen film? Lifeforce! The first in a three picture deal with Golan-Globus' Cannon Group which saw Tobe Hooper also direct Invaders From Mars and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Lifeforce is a bizarre little film that is as long as it is baffling. Based on Colin Wilson's novel The Space Vampires, Lifeforce was co-written by Dan O Bannon (Alien, Return of the Living Dead). The cast includes Steve Railsback, Peter Firth, Frank Finlay, Patrick Stewart and also features an unforgettable (and formative) performance by Mathilda May as Space Girl! The synopsis is as follows: IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE, THE TERROR BEGINS. When a space shuttle crew finds a mysterious spacecraft containing three human-looking creatures in a state of suspended animation, they bring them back to Earth for further investigation. It's only then that scientists discover that they are in fact a race of space vampires that feed off people's life-force rather than their blood. So when they escape and run amok in London, the consequences are apocalyptic - and the shuttle crew's only survivor seems to be the only man who can stop them. By popular demand, Your Stupid Minds finally does Brenda Starr, the troubled Golan-Globus based-on-a-comic-strip-no-one-read film shot in 1986, completed in 1989, and released in 1992 about a hotshot reporter. Brenda Starr (Brooke Shields) is a star(r) reporter at the New York Flash. After getting the scoop on a German/Irish gangster Donovan O’Shea that results in her being hospitalized, her editor sends her on a mission to get the scoop on a rumored new water-based super fuel. She gets a tip from mysterious eye-patched beau Basil St. John (Timothy Dalton) and goes to Brazil by way of Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, a number of people are on her tail, including Soviet spies, rival reporter Libby ‘Lips’ Lipscomb (Diana Scarwid), and her own cartoonist from the real world Mike (Tony Peck, son of Gregory). What results is some hijinks involving capoeira, an alligator with a cigar, and Jeffrey Tambor.
For our 190th episode, we are joined by Gabri and do a talker of one of the most phoned in Golan-Globus movies ever, Assassination. The movie is currently (as of 8/2/18) currently on Hulu if you want to watch along. But our Patreon backers may or may not have another way to watch...
Hercules (1983) is the Golan-Globus version of the “classic” strong man tale that features wizards and witches and feats of strength and Sybil Danning’s breasts. It’s a mixed bag, but there’s potential fun within. In the second half, Maki talks Jurassic Park Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Tag (2018), Harlo attempts to have fun with Death […]
We're going ape on Happy Cast this week, as Stinker Lets Loose! author Mike Sacks joins us for a triple feature of monkey mayhem - Clint Eastwood's cult trucker/monkey saga Every Which Way But Loose, the execrable Golan-Globus comedy Going Bananas, and a deep dive into the legacy of Stinker Lets Loose! and the nature of novelizations. But first, Nathan and Clint go on an angry deep dive into Eli Roth's angry, lazy retread of Death Wish, starring an increasingly turtle-esque Bruce Willis! 2:16 - Scalding Hot Takes: Death Wish 21:14 - Every Which Way But Loose (w/Mike Sacks) 45:14 - Control Nathan and Clint: Going Bananas 1:04:46 - Stinker Lets Loose! WARNING: This episode contains spoilers. It's time to return to franchise territory as we're heading back to the early 1980's and a (not really) trilogy courtesy of one of our favourite 1980's companies Cannon Films. This time out we're looking at Enter the Ninja, Revenge of the Ninja and Ninja III: The Domination which are the main films responsible for bringing the Japanese art of Ninjutsu to the North American masses. It was also our first exposure to the ultra cool Sho Kosugi. These are three films that helped shape our love of those black clad, gadget wielding silent killers and all of the low brow action flicks from the duo of Golan-Globus. As usual, we start with what we've been watching including a handful of low-budget horror with varying results, a comedy that had Chris questioning just what the Hell was going on in 1987, some homosexual bees(?), and much more! Thanks for listening! Be sure to head to iTunes to subscribe and drop us a five star rating/review - every little bit helps! Links to all our web stuff at www.gbwpodcast.com

When the United States and North Korea threaten nuclear war... oops, sorry... jump back 30 years. When the United States and the Soviet Union threaten nuclear war, it takes a mind-wiped Lois Lane and some random school kid's letter for Superman to decide to rid the world of nuclear weapons. He gets more than he bargained for, however, when Lex Luthor returns to the scene and has engineered the perfect weapon of mass destruction: Golan-Globus... (Sorry... did it again...) Nuclear Man! 1. David and Aaron take a peak behind the curtain of the dearly departed figures of Hollywood. We don't want to dwell on the loss of these cinematic heroes, we want to embrace the artwork they left behind. One of the true Masters of Horror has moved on and David and Aaron are breaking down the wild run of Tobe Hooper's career. From his iconic beginnings with THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE to thrill ride of THE FUNHOUSE to his Golan-Globus partnership with LIFEFORCE and more.
We tackle the career of our favorite living artist/human being. Brandon and Britnee recap the New Orleans Museum of Art's recent summertime John Waters Film Festival with fellow Krewe Divine co-founder Virginia Ruth. Also, Britnee makes Brandon watch the Golan-Globus horror comedy Dr. Heckyl and Mr. Hype (1980) for the first time. Enjoy! https://swampflix.com/ http://thextrasmallfiles.tumblr.com/
Oh my god, it's really going to happen: We're going to wrap up the first year of this project, and it's starting to feel... really comfortable. Do you have trouble telling GATES OF HEAVEN and HEAVEN'S GATE apart? You won't after this episode. Have you ever seen the Golan-Globus musical THE APPLE? We have, and we still can't believe it's real. And if you want a great example of high art and low art existing side by side, we're doing both KAGEMUSHA and SHOGUN ASSASSIN. It's November 1980, and it rules!
Your Stupid Minds returns to two of its most favorite loves: buff dudes and Golan-Globus films. It’s 1983’s Hercules starring The Incredible Hulk’s Lou Ferrigno! Director Luigi Cozzi (hiding his intense Italianness behind the pseudonym Lewis Coates) brings Hercules to the big screen for the 80th and definitely not last time. When the gods are hanging out on the moon and incredibly bored, Zeus (Claudio Cassinelli) decides to give a random baby super buff powers. Hera (Rossana Podestà) takes exception but Zeus never listens to her so who cares? Hercules’s parents are killed in a successful coup, but baby Herc escapes and is raised by a nice infertile farming couple. Tragedy causes him to travel to Thebes to fight against other buff dudes, and he must team up with Circe (Mirella D’Angelo) in order to rescue his true love Cassiopeia (Ingrid Anderson) and battle against the evil King Minos (William Berger) and Adriana (Sybil Danning). That’s a lot of names so let’s just leave it at that.

Stallone makes his 4th appearance on our show as he teams up with Golan and Globus (who make their third appearance) for the "one tough cop" showcase that is Cobra. Marion Cobretti has to protect a key witness that can identify the Nightslasher, who isn't just a raving murderer as his name would suggest; he's also the head of a criminal organization that wants to take over the world. How about that? We all quite like Cobra and would give it a recommendation. If you enjoy any type of action films with badassery in it, this is a must do for you. Presented by Cobra, Cobra, Cobra, because one Cobra isn't enough. Its time for us to give ol' Sly Stallone another go (for the fourth time) as he teams up with Golan and Globus for Cobra. http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-061-Cobra.mp3 Download MP3 Cobra is the story of Los Angeles police officer Marion Cobretti and his one-man, several-automatic-weapon war on a cult of murderers led by the Night Slasher (played by that guy from X-Files with the face). So you can see why we knew we'd love it. American auteur Sylvester Stallone wrote and starred, but inexplicably did not direct; SFS favorites Golan and Globus produced, god bless 'em. This is the kind of movie that played right to every Reagan voter's base assumptions about rampant crime and the appropriately deadly response necessary -- we're talking almost Death Wish 3 levels of anarchy and vigilantism. (I may have mentioned that we love Golan-Globus.) Much of Cobra came from Stallone's idea of what Beverly Hills Cop should have been like, so maybe he's not as smart as we think he is. Alan Quatermain and Golan-Globus return to the podcast with 1985's King Solomon's Mines! Richard Chamberlin, Sharon Stone, and John Rhys-Davies star in this low-budget ripoff of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Alan Quatermain and Jesse Huston must traipse across the African continent to rescue her repeatedly beaten elderly father, who's been kidnapped by World War I era Germans (NOT Nazis) so he can divulge the whereabouts of King Solomon's mines. Using planes, trains, and automobiles, they get to the mines through cannibal tribe, voyeuristic lions, monkey people, and crocodile pit. Where does this fit into the Indiana Jones canon? Is it better or worse than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? Only one way to find out!
