Send us a Text Message. When the indomitable Ida Rodriguez steps up to the mic, you know you're in for a story that's as punchy as her comedy. Her journey isn't just a tale of one woman's rise through the ranks of stand-up; it's a testament to the colorful threads of Latino culture, the realities of being Afro-Latina in Hollywood, and the bittersweet symphony of cultural pride and struggle. With Ida's infectious laughter as our guide, we explore the rich tapestry of her life – from the vibrant streets of Puerto Rico to the cutthroat backstage world of comedy clubs. In a landscape where voices like Ida's are often on the fringes, she pulls us right into the heart of the conversation. This episode is an intimate mosaic of identity, laughter, and truth. We examine the intricacies of navigating two worlds as Afro-Latinos, the persistent hurdles for proper representation in the arts, and how the resilience of culture can be both a shield and a spear in the fight against erasure. Together with Ida, we celebrate the triumphs of Latino comedians who break stereotypes, and we share in the warmth of traditions that bond families across distances.Finish off with a nod to the soul-stirring power of storytelling. Ida takes us from the laughter-filled warmth of Thanksgiving dinners to the emotional depth of her own family's narratives. These stories aren't just words passed down through generations; they are the living, breathing heartbeats of communities that refuse to be forgotten. Ida's voice rises above the clamor, a clarion call for authenticity and inclusion, compelling us to listen, learn, and most importantly, to let ourselves be moved.Support the Show.

Tadhg HIckey's searing memoir "A Portrait Of The Piss-Artist As A Young Man" won the Global Gael Bok Of The Year award for 2023 and if you've read it, you'll know why - it's a warts-and-all account of how he tried to balance tremendous success as a writer and actor with family struggles and the bottomless despair of alcohol addiction. In a scenario that many in the Irish diaspora will recognise, Tadhg's abuse of alcohol really spiralled out of control when he was performing at the Edinburgh Festival and some of his darkest days as a drinker were spent in London, but luckily he entered recovery and has survived to tell the tale. He came on the show to talk about the mechanics of writing a book, balancing low self-esteem with an enormous ego, and how telling the truth is the only way to real recovery. The Cru discuss the challenges of writing humor/comedy before trying their hand at it in their own tales. Stories begin at the 12:50 mark and include voices, arguing; a contested peg leg; someone, pegging, in some ways; a pirate museum; and a false limb that dreams of being a different false limb. From Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable: Dot and carry one. Someone with a wooden leg. The dot represents the impression left by the peg-leg on the ground. Kirsty Eyre is the winner of the inaugural Comedy Women in Print award (2019). Her debut novel, Cow Girl was released in Summer 2020 and was also shortlisted for the Romantic Novel Association's debut novel award. In addition, she has written two books under her pseudonym, Ginger Jones, with the latest being holiday romcom You Had Me At Halloumi. We had great fun chatting with Kirsty and hearing how she began her writing career by writing pantos on the Eurostar. That gave her the bug, and soon she was putting on comedy plays at the Edinburgh Fringe before she turned her hand to writing novels. We hear how it felt to win the inaugural Comedy Women in Print Award in 2019 (and the rather surprising invite approach from the organisers!), talk about the subjectiveness of comedy writing and hear why she writes some books under a pseudonym. For 39. gang skriver Vivienne McKee en Crazy Christmas komedie. For første gang laver hun – i bedste Netflix-stil – en ”ny sæson” af sidste års forestilling. Same, but different, som man siger. Vivienne McKee forklarer bl.a., hvordan sidste års pandemi-nedlukning af Tell Me About It midt i spilleperioden kom til at få indflydelse på dette års forestilling.

Realizing they needed to come up with a plan quickly to rescue the Jester, the Swordsman Hero and the Woman scrambled out of sight of the parishioners still standing in the shadow of the church doorway. They crept around a few corners, and positioned themselves so they could still see the church. They talked about what their plan going forward should be, all the while reorganizing their equipment they had hastily scooped up on their way out of the church. They strategized what the best course of action would be, and eventually came to a conclusion that they were happy with. Stepping back out onto the street, they walked back towards the church. Arizona's own Jerry Krull won this month's $100 Joke Contest and joined us live on our YouTube channel to share the sauce on how he did it. Although new to stand-up, Jerry has years of experience and training on comedy writing and his set is a prime example of that. His 3 step process to writing his winning set is: 1. Start with free writing 2. Edit out fluff words 3. Organize into jokes During the interview, Jerry estimates he did this process 30-40 times in order to generate a tight 90 seconds of material. On a list of the least funny topics imaginable, the global refugee crisis, border disputes and questions of citizenship are probably close to the top. And yet comedian Maeve Higgins has spent her career finding ways to make jokes about (and make sense of) the ways we draw lines across the globe. She's a stand-up comedian and writer who speaks from the point of view of an Irish immigrant in the United States. In this excerpt from How to Be a Better Human, a TED Audio Collective podcast hosted by Chris Duffy, Maeve talks about ways we can find funny and eye-opening vantage points to look at the realities and borders of the world, our place in it and how imagination and laughter can help us through tough times. We asked Chris to select a book that he thinks explores these topics more deeply, and he selected "There There" by Tommy Orange. Listen for his recommendation and why he thinks it's "like the best action movie and one of the smartest sociological and historical essays paired together." This episode is part of the TED Talks Daily summer book club, a series featuring talks and interviews to inspire your next great read.
Wayne makes some comments about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during the Academy Awards ceremony, and extrapolates to talk about art in general and how it is separate from real life.

Keren Storai, the Princess of Dark Comedy here in Melbourne has recently had baby Jemimah!! We talk about the total lifestyle change from becoming pregnant, having a baby, the sacrifices, writing comedy, alcohol, mental health and ayahuasca. It's a very honest, deep, rich, vulnerable conversation. How does one go from drinking at gigs almost every night of the week, to not drinking or doing gigs, and taking care of a baby? Find out. Keren's advice on writing and performing comedy is gold! I had no idea that Keren had such depth and keen mind – I learned heaps! Have a listen – you'll be glad you did. :) I play you out with the heaviest song that Clint and I recorded with Cosmic Egg. It's called Rothschild. It's a dark favourite, just like Keren. Enjoy! This week we talk to the co-author duo - JT Blakely - author of NRDS (National Recently Deceased Services) about writing a Kindle Vella Serial, the future of writing stories, and how to effectively write comedy! When JT takes off his long trench coat and sunglasses (revealing that he is in fact two grown men with one on the other's shoulders), I have a great conversation with the men behind the man - Jeff Elkins & JP Rindfleisch! These two are truly hilarious, beside the invaluable views they have on proper writing techniques, this conversation was genuinely a blast to record. Witty, silly, everything you could want in a writer pair if you ask me. As a co-author unit they fill in the gaps the other lacks like a perfect ying and yang, but don't be fooled, indivudally these two are powerhouses in their own right. You may have caught Mark Humphries as the imposing presence delivering satire on the 7:30 Report. He serves it with boundless charm and an engaging twinkle of the eye.You might also have found him as the amiable and accomplished host on the local version of the UK quiz success, Pointless. The television platform seems the likely home for Humphries who grew up with an appetite for television variety and who is the son of a former ABC weatherman. Early forays into a television studio ignited an ambition to entertain and amuse.Humphries also hosts a passion for musical theatre. He was recently triumphant in the series of Celebrity Mastermind where his special subject, was The Musicals of Stephen Sondheim. His charm and personality are reminiscent of the television Gods of yesteryear, but with an essential contemporary edge. He is equipped with a smile as broad as a bridge, a mischievous glint that hints at naughty and a masterful way with words - indelible assets for satirical comedy and television variety. He spoke with Stages examining the challenge of writing and delivering comedy in present times, quiz shows and of course, the magic of the musical.

For this episode of the Picture Theory podcast I had the pleasure of chatting with writer, director, editor Leah Byrd.At the time she had recently finished the first season of her web series titled Hot and Bothered. As described by Leah, Hot and Bothered follows the story of:“Two sarcastic stoner twenty year-olds get in over their heads when they create the "Grindr" for lesbians.”In this episode we chat about making political artwork that addresses our identities as half-black, half-white American filmmakers. We also chat about what it means to make comedy with a queer black feminist lens. Here’s a little more about Leah from her bio at LeahByrd.com:Leah Byrd is the writer, director, and star of Hot & Bothered. She was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. She grew up spending 13 years in Catholic school in a small Midwestern city leaving very little room for queer spaces within her childhood.Discovering all of the queer content available online was a real game changer on her path towards self acceptance. This has driven a strong passion within Leah to create diverse characters within her own media. She knows first hand what representation can do to one's mental health and the incredible power that media can have on opening minds.Leah Byrd has a BFA in Motion Picture Production from Wright State University.Without further delay, here’s the video interview with Leah:

Phil Scott has many strings on his long bow - actor, writer, pianist, singer, composer, reviewer and broadcaster. Adept across several mediums he has ensured that anyone who is present in his audience is guaranteed several smiles, much guffaw and rapt awe at his rapier wit and keyboard dexterity. He was a pivotal on-stage member of the annual STC Wharf Revue for 18 years demonstrating how satire deftly allows a community to examine itself. The titles alone conjure the sort of treat to be devoured - Free Petrol, Sunday in Iraq with George, Much Revue About Nothing and Pennies From Kevin. He also wrote and performed for several ABC television series’.These include Good News Week,Three Men and a Baby Grand and The Gillies Report.Extending his writing to the narrative form, he has had four comic novels published in Australia and the U.S. with such fabulous titles as One Dead Diva, It’s About Your Friend, Gay Resort Murder Shock and Mardi Gras Murders. He is a cabaret veteran, having first explored the form in 1983 with his solo show, A Legend in His Own Mind. He has appeared at venues around Australia and has been a regular at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Most recently he performed a one-man show about the English songwriter Lionel Bart titled Reviewing the Situation and contributed writing and performance to the biographical work Mario, about the life and music of Mario Lanza. His talents have also been present in the evolution of a significant number of cabaret performances as co-creator - The Twink and the Showgirl, Pop Princess, Newley Discovered, Gentlemen Prefer Blokes, Fat Swan, Little Orphan Trashley, Diamonds are For Trevor and Liza’s Back (is broken). Oh! And he’s written a couple of Musicals as well.Next up is a season of his new show (with Jonathan Biggins) No Cabaret For Old Men. You may see Will Smith's photo and know you've seen him somewhere. He's acted in the Thick Of It, Paddington and with 'Harry and Paul'. But in this podcast episode we delve, of course, into his career as a writer. Writing on Time Trumpet, Veep, Omid Djalili as well as for The Thick Of It too. How did he get started? And how did that all lead to his latest project, a non-comedy novel called "Mainlander"? This episode has a guest interviewer, Jan Caston, as she managed to bump into Will in Jersey and nabbed him!
Here I spend pretty much an entire weekend trying to write my upcoming stand-up show, Break a Leg. Will I finish it? Listen and find out!

Nostalgia might be a bit of a fad at the moment, but we’re genuinely delighted to have comedy double act Trev and Simon back in our lives. The pair were essential Saturday morning viewing in the UK in the late 80s and early 90s, and it’s exciting to hear that they’ve returned with their wacky brand of comedy – only this time, they’re making an Audio Drama! strangenessAnd what better way to make an Audio Drama than to hook up with Clare Eden from the Minister of Chance? Clare joins us in this episode to talk about how this project came about, why they chose the audio medium, and how it was funded. The first episode of Strangeness in Space was released recently after a successful Kickstarter campaign, and it’s one of the funniest and most surreal shows you’ll hear this year.On top of diving into the nuts and bolts of getting a show up and running, Clare also gives her thoughts on writing family-friendly comedy, and we chat about the curse of the podcast categories and how Audio Drama is still seeking that hard and fast method of curation and discoverability.
