The Omniplex is open, and so is this lost film canister full of spinach! While the larger conversation is on lost media (hard looking at you, HBO Max...), today we talk about the unearthed full-length animatic of Genndy Tartakovsky's unmade animated Popeye movie. What would it have been? Why did it get cancelled? We are not here today to answer those very specific questions, but we take a good hard look at what's there and what might've been if it had gone through final animation, voice, and possible producer notes. So come join us as we pop open this can of spinach! While we aren't going to provide a direct link to the film's animatic, if you enter "Genndy Tartakovsky popeye animatic" into a search engine, you'll find it easy. Everybody dance, The Omniplex is open!! This week, come with us to 60's Baltimore, as we talk John Waters' 1988 classic Hairspray! We briefly explore the partnership between superstar drag queen Divine and John Waters, and compare the 2007 musical remake, and what makes this a smart classic take on desegregation through the lens of the 80's. It's Easter at The Omniplex! And what better way to celebrate than by talking about.. a Christmas movie?? Yup, this year instead of hiding eggs, you will need to hide your nuts, because this week's movie is 2009's Russian-Hungarian production The Nutcracker: The Untold Story (aka The Nutcracker 3D)! From us shaking our heads in disappoint at an otherwise fantastic cast (Nathan Lane, John Turturro..), and baffling at the unneccesary Nazi imagery, come join us as we take down this bad Christmas classic... for Easter. There's finally.. FINALLY... a light at the end of the tunnel. The Omniplex is open, welcome to our 4th.. and hopefully final.. Quarantine watch cast. This is a special one, as it denotes the one-year anniversary of when the quarantine (in America, anyways) started. And since the vaccines are rolling out and gaining speed, we finally a year later have some hope for some semblance of normalcy in the near future. Welcome, friends. The Omniplex is open. We aren't normally this heavy on the political side, but the last four years has been tumultuous. Each piece of media produced, whether directly or indirectly, is a product of its time. Now that the horse has officially left the hospital (thank you John Mulaney, for the brilliant and hilarious extended metaphor), we can begin to look at what impact Trump's presidency has had on our film, tv, and music. If media is society holding a mirror up to itself, what we've seen has been very bleak. But in the chaos, we also look for hope and growth at the end of the tunnel. The Omniplex is open! This week we discuss a bygone era. Think back. Back to a long lost time in movie history. Alllllll the way back to the Fall and Winter of the yesteryear of 2007. Think of the greats. Juno. Michael Clayton. Sweeney Todd. No Country For Old Men. And more! Relive these classics with us, and discover why late 2007 era frozen in time for the three of us, and a special time for movies as an artform. QUICK NOTE: We at The Omniplex believe that each episode we release out into the world is a time capsule of the time of its recording. At such, this episode was recorded and released about a month before Elliot Page came out as trans and thus we accidentally deadname and misgender him in this episode. It's presented here as-is because at the time we, like the world, didn't know. But now that Elliot is out, he will be correctly named and gendered from this point forward. Welcome to our episode on Jordan Peele's now horror classic Get Out! We recorded this episode on April 4, 2018 - a little over a year ago. Albert was originally going to cut out all mentions that date this recording, but a) there are too many mentions and b) it turns out that said mentions aged really, really well. So enjoy! Note: The Film Room episode backlog has only 2 episodes left before we start delivering you fresh new content! Stay tuned!! Poster by Edgar Ascensão We now have a website! (Goodbye first parts of failed series, hello Cinematic universes!) Come join us as we flip through the highlights (and lowlights) of a decade ago. (Jesus, has it been that long?) Hello and welcome! This week we take a good hard look at one of our top five favorite bears, Paddington! Specifically the movies. Austin grew up with the bear, Albert did not, so we have both the nostalgic perspective and the outsider perspective when looking at these films (we both loved them). So what makes this extremely british masterpieces of wholesome mischief so great? Let's take a hard stare and find out! We're on the radio! Welcome to a cursed episode! This is one we tried to record for about three months, and then was barely able to get out (recording was interrupted by a telemarketer at one point!), and THEN thanks to a life-disrupting disaster on Albert's side, was in hiatus for another year. But now! Finally! We can release it to you, the masses. This cast is mysterious, much like the cryptid it is about. The film we are covering this week is The Legend of Boggy Creek! A docudrama about a little Arkansas town plagued by a backwoods monster. This is a fascinating film for its use of the real people that were affected, and being a nice time capsule documenting the waning small town lifestyle. You can watch the film in full here! Hello and welcome to The Film Room! This week, we take a look at a looong overdue entry, Steven Spielberg's Jaws! Considered the first blockbuster (in the modern definition of the word), Spielberg's first real theatrical outing, we look at why it holds up so well, as well as the controversy surrounding how it started America's longtime fear of sharks. So sing along with our rousing rendition of "Show Me the Way to Go Home", and get your chum buckets ready, because it's JAWS!! We're on the radio! Hello and welcome! Since we've officially entered three digits, we're finally releasing our radio pilot! Back in January, we were generously offered a slot on a British online radio station, and have been releasing episodes there both old and new. So this episode is essentially a soft "reboot" of sorts where we go back to our roots and re-establish ourselves for a new audience! An update on our first episode, we are of course covering The Disaster Artist! We hope you enjoy! We're on the radio! Listen to new episodes before they hit the feed at Radio Beacon Online!
