KYRSTEN SINEMA SHOULD RESIGN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: I do not know how or why Senator Sinema of Arizona can still identify as a Democrat after appearing with Mitch McConnell at an event that was for all intents and purposes a Republican Campaign Rally for the mid-terms. Sinema praised McConnell for his "respect for the Senate" even though it was McConnell who made up a rule that denied Merrick Garland even a hearing for the Supreme Court and stole the seat for the Republicans. She blamed everybody BUT the Republicans for politics becoming "radicalized, spiraling steadily downward into bitter and tribal extremism" and never mentioned January 6th. She forecast a Democratic defeat in November. (9:53) I explain my personal relationship with Kyrsten Sinema, first as a friend, then in a brief dating relationship, then again as a friend, spanning nearly eight years, and her deterioration from as liberal and progressive a person as I've ever met to a clown who has fallen for Mitch McConnell's act. She should resign from the Senate - Arizona's governor would be required by law to name a Democratic replacement - and take her deliberate unwillingness to recognize the threat to democracy posed by the Republicans, and utilize it either to challenge Tulsi Gabbard for the role OF Tulsi Gabbard, or go host "Meet The Press." B-Block (19:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Edda in The Bahamas (20:13) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: The Meadows texts: the "Crown Jewels" of the 1/6 Investigation; Liz Truss has them invoking the 119 days of George Canning; Ken Paxton flees. (22:45) IN SPORTS: The Judge Watch Never Stops; Brett Favre suspended by SiriusXM. (24:35) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Our boy Chuck Todd, the American Senator who doesn't know how to pronounce "9/11," and the Elitist cheering for the defeat of the Elitists without realizing he IS an Elitist, vie for the honors. C-Block (31:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It actually happened: the president of NBC summoned us to his 52nd Floor office to warn us that MSNBC was about to be taken off the air by order of the Chairman of G.E. because HIS MOMMY TOLD HIM TO.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Emma hosts Katherine Blunt, reporter for the Wall Street Journal, to discuss her recent book California Burning: The Fall Of Pacific Gas And Electric-And What It Means For America's Power Grid. First, Emma dives into updates on the Freight Rail strike, the unionization of Minor League Baseball, and DeSantis' human trafficking stunt, also diving into the backlash to Lindsey Graham's abortion ban as Jesse Watters criticizes him for giving away their game. Katherine Blunt then joins as she and Emma dive right into what PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric) is (a California utility company), and how they came to achieve the status of gas and electric monopoly in the state. Next, they get into the disasters around this company, starting with the 2018 wildfire caused by their reckless negligence that destroyed the town of Paradise, killing 84 people, as they dive into the corporate failures that lead to a 100-year-old hook holding up transmission lines with no awareness from the company. Parsing through this, Emma and Katherine tackle the role of the profit motive in supporting disinvestment from self-regulation, with actual profit coming from the rate of return on capital investments that improve their overall value, also diving into the state and federal regulations that shaped the mass deregulation of the energy sector from the 1990s on. After an extended conversation on the role of climate change (and thus drought, wildfires, hurricanes, extreme cold, and more) in inflaming the already dysfunctioning grids across the US, and how California has put the liability on the shoulders of the utility companies, they wrap up the interview by assessing the role of Biden's infrastructure package in rebuilding and reinforcing our electricity grids. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon and Matt as they tackle the absurdity of the British royal family and watch their police crackdown on someone pointing out that Prince Andrew is a pedophile, also watching a Newsmax host come around to see the horrible working conditions of Freight Rail workers and having another small discussion on Tim Pool's music with Spencer from Utah. Ronald Raygun discusses Ron DeSantis' disgusting human trafficking stunt, Matt Walsh breaks down trying to do a scientific racism on the live-action Little Mermaid, and Candace Owens discusses why Black people must take responsibility for slavery, plus, your calls and IMs! Emma hosts Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. Then, Emma is joined by Astra Taylor, co-founder of the Debt Collective and author of the recent book Remake the World: Essays, Reflections, Rebellions, to discuss Biden's student loan forgiveness program. Then, Emma is joined by Astra Taylor, co-founder of the Debt Collective and author of the recent book, “Remake the World: Essays, Reflections, Rebellions,” to discuss Biden's student loan forgiveness program. Emma also touches on the likelihood of the Mar-a-Lago affidavit's release today, Biden's BOOMING (44%) approval rating, and recent appearances in the wake of electoral Ws having much more energy. Then, Alex Pareene drops by as he and Emma get right into the rising charisma of supposed “Dark Brandon,” as he begins feeling himself coming out of the success of the IRA, January 6th Committee, and canceling student debt, as Democrats finally come along on the whole “actually, getting things done is a good thing” idea (with months until the midterms we can only hope it wasn't too little too late). Next, they dive into the mixed bag of the NY election results, discussing the Democrats absolutely blowing the bag with redistricting, employing the weight of that failure to push progressives into infighting, and why the lesson to be learned from this is to upset the first-past-the-post electoral system, employing ranked voting and other experimental policies, and to either detach from or completely reinvent Congressional Electoral Committees like the DCCC. Wrapping up they dive into the intensifying 1/6 Committee, walking through the foolish institutionalism that would have Merrick Garland believe that following DOJ requisites would shield him from backlash, assessing his base entering the midterms, and the importance of actually putting forwards multiple issues beyond “they're being unfair to me” in winning an election (See: Hillary 2016). Astra Taylor and Emma then conclude the free half by walking through the story of student debt relief, beginning during the Occupy Wall Street movement, met with the typical media dismissiveness, only to evolve over the next decade (with help from Congressional progressives like Warren, Sanders, and even Schumer) into a political movement that not only has viability but even practical implementation, wrapping up by taking on the legitimacy of the “minimal relief” critiques on the debt forgiveness. And in the Fun Half: Emma watches as Blake Masters starts a to-thiel coverup of his anti-abortion past, Jared Kushner discusses his billionaire fantasies of immortality and Martha MacCallum asks if it's hard to be part of a family that gets arrested so much. Tim Pool brings it back to the mediocre rock of the ‘90s, and – much to Jesse Watters' titillation – Missouri brings back spanking as an academic punishment.  The crew also responds to the “why do you deserve student debt relief if you went to a private college” talking point, plus, your calls and IMs! [00:30] Media Fabrication Machine Churns Out More Lies (15 minutes)U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland refused to provide details about the FBI Mar-a-Lago raid during his brief press conference yesterday. A couple of hours later, someone inside the Department of Justice leaked to the Washington Post that the FBI was apparently looking for documents related to nuclear weapons. The media narrative earlier this week was all about retrieving essential historical documents for the National Archives; today it is about Trump stealing nuclear documents. If that is truly the case, why did the FBI wait 18 months to get them back? We are watching this continually evolving narrative collapse in real time. [15:45] Thou Shalt Not Criticize the FBI (16 minutes)Regardless of the FBI and DOJ's obviously politicized actions, you are not allowed to criticize these agencies. During Garland's press conference, he decried the “recent unfounded attacks on the professionalism of the FBI and Justice Department agents and prosecutors.” Last week, FBI Director Christopher Wray insisted that under his direction, the FBI focuses on avoiding “even the appearance of bias or lack of objectivity.” Meanwhile, Dr. Fauci recently stated in all seriousness that he is a symbol of integrity and truth. The Bible tells us to judge by fruits—and the fruits of these officials are rotten to the core. [31:55] Communist Infiltration (19 minutes)Last night, Jesse Watters exposed Paul Pelosi Jr.'s shady business dealings with southeast Asian companies, dubbing him “PG-13 Hunter Biden.” Pelosi Jr. traveled with his mother Nancy on her recent southeast Asia tour; many of the stops on her trip were conveniently in countries where Pelosi Jr. has lucrative business connections. As former FBI Deputy Assistant Director Terry Turchie stated on Watters's show, “We may very well have our own highest level of government penetrated by Chinese agents.” America's leaders are dragging the country into communism, exactly as Herbert W. Armstrong warned as early as the 1940s. [51:05] E-Mail Feedback (5 minutes)

Sam and Emma host Rachel Cohen, senior policy reporter at Vox, to discuss her recent piece "How state governments are reimagining American public housing". Then, they are joined by Jessica Preheim, Vice President of Strategic Planning and Public Affairs at the Houston Coalition for the Homeless to discuss housing policy in the city.  First, Emma runs through yesterday's primaries before diving right into updates from the FBI's January 6th investigations, from the seizing of Scott Perry's phone to the GOP's responses to the Mar-a-Lago raid that vary from “they planted it!” to “they're making it up!” but all seem to recognize an “it” that will be exposed. Then, she's joined by Rachel Cohen as they dive into the state of public housing in the US, with rents reaching record highs and not coming down anytime soon, despite dropping inflation levels. Next, they step back and walk through the history of public housing in the US, with the Federal Government first becoming involved in the lead-up to the New Deal, even with private interests' successful lobbying for limitations and, all continuing through the fifties and up to the creation of HUD, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, in the ‘60s, helping to regulate the federal policies around the matter – seeing a complete cutoff of investment in public housing alongside a subsidizing of white middle-class families moving to the suburbs. Wrapping up the history of US housing policy, they walk through the post-HUD neoliberal era, with the crime panic starting in the 1980s seeing a complete decimation of HUD's budget, and leading into an era void of housing infrastructure. Next, Rachel looks to states like Massachusetts to explore how it seems to be local politics that is actually looking to intervene in this crisis, putting forwards policy that isn't just subsidies for privatized housing, and actually seeks to reinvest in community care and infrastructure, before they wrap up by exploring the future of a reimagined housing system that stems from the states and local communities themselves. Then, Jessica Preheim from the Houston Coalition for the Homeless walks Emma through the incredibly remarkable work that the organization has done over the last decade in Houston, with homelessness decreasing by over 60% despite having the sixth largest homeless population as of 2011 and a crackdown from HUD. They explore how much the most marginalized in society can be helped by just having a roof over their head, the Houston Coalition's tactics to strengthen communities' ability to shelter their citizens (and the importance of supporting encampments' existence when there is no other option) and their emphasis on chronic homelessness. And in the Fun Half: Emma takes a call from St. Paul on a public reserve, based on grain? Tulsi Gabbard teams up with Jesse Watters as she continues her streak of fascist apologia, this time in defense of Donald Trump and tax evaders everywhere, Stephanie from Minneapolis dives into the “manosphere” as a meeting point of the Jordan Peterson “intellectual” misogyny and the more traditional masculine aesthetics, looking at how race plays a particularly central role in the community's pathologizing. They also cover Ilhan Omar's incredibly narrow victory in the Democratic primary, AIPAC's massive influence in pushing conservative Democrats into Congress, Fox and Friends ponders the FBI's ethics for the very first time, and Nathaniel from Fresno dives deep into the re-emergence of book banning. Charlie Kirk calls for retributive raids, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Dr. Leah Stokes, professor of climate and energy policy at the University of California, Santa Barbara, to discuss the climate provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act. Emma and Sam walk through updates on the House's schedule and Alex Jones' texts arriving in the hands of the 1/6 Committee, before diving deep into Donald J. Trump's response to the FBI's raid on his Mar-a-Lago base, calling the warrant-backed infiltration “unprecedented”… just like Watergate! Then Dr. Leah Stokes joins as they jump right into the IRA, first tackling how the original Build Back Better bill sought to address climate change, exploring the carrot-tactic to lead us towards clean energy, from consumer-facing support or getting EVs, heat pumps, and other electricity-driven infrastructure to bolstering attempts to clean up our energy grids nationwide, all allowing everyday Americans to burn less fossil fuel and spend less money (in a manner that would specifically help tackle fossil-fuel-driven inflation). Next, they explore how the IRA takes that blueprint, and just dials it back a little, making it about 80% (rather than 90%) of the way to experts' emission reduction goals, and cutting certain provisions on a civilian climate corp and e-bike infrastructure, before they walk through how the bill encourages healthy labor practices, and – while falling short of actually encouraging unionization – is a bill largely backed by unions nation-wide. They wrap up the interview by tackling Manchin's personal provisions, particularly around leasing, and what to expect from his side-car bill coming soon. And in the Fun Half, the MR Crew dives into the (politely) manic reactions from the conservative media wasteland to the Mar-A-Lago raid, from Eric Trump bypassing the Kennedy family entirely via the use of "arrows" to describe how betrayed his family is, Jesse Watters and Buck Sexton evoking Julius Caesar, Florida's Attorney general's "They weren't flushing DRUGS down the toilet!" defense, Marjorie Taylor Greene going full-Defund, Bernie Kerik worrying for Trump's life, and, of course, it wouldn't be a meltdown if Rudy Giuliani wasn't beaming in from an undisclosed, terribly lit location, to yell about the unfair treatment of his favorite guy (of course he's speaking with Steven Crowder about this). Then, Emma is joined by Odessa Kelly, candidate for Congress in Tennessee's 7th District, to give us an update from the campaign trail. First, Emma dives into the impotent Inflation Reduction Act, the GOP's block of healthcare for vets exposed to agent orange, and the Right in Congress complaining about the Democrats trying to do two things at once! Nick Marx then joins as he dives right into what inspired his studies of the world of conservative comedy, from the belief that it was an oxymoron with the success of the Daily Show without a right-wing counterpart, to the emergency of Trump and the “is he funny (yes)” arguments. Then, he and Emma walk through the various levels of comedy discussed in the book, from the more basic reactionary comedy of Dave Chapelle that isn't inherently right-wing to the more obvious institutional conservatism of Fox's Jesse Watters and Greg Gutfeld, the latter of which has his own (surprisingly successful) late night show, and discuss how the hatred of ambivalence that can be found in their reactionary backlash plays in pushing this humor further and further to the extreme. Taking a step back, Professor Marx then paints a picture of the institutional similarities between the late-night comedy of the right and left, from the actual formats of the show to the tactics of creating an “in-group” unified around laughing at the “out-group,” before wrapping up with a conversation on the endpoint of this wormhole to the right and the genuine fascists and neonazis that largely act as sources for this reactionary commentary. Then, Odessa Kelly and Emma get right into Kelly's fight for TN-7, the failure of the right's attempt to engage in racist gerrymandering, and the beauty of fighting for a base of Black folks and progressives. Next, she walks through her experiences working in unions and fighting gentrification, how they built her knowledge of the role of solidarity in achieving progress, and what we need from positions of power to get stuff done. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt and Brandon, with Binder previewing a massive Web3 story he'll be breaking this evening on Scam Economy, Emma takes on the absurdity of Jim Harbaugh's “give me your children” policy and the messiah complex of College Football coaches. Noah from Tampa dives into the psychology of conservatives, Andrew Yang finally brews the first truly third party, and Q takes on Right Wingers dominating the discourse around comedy. President Joe Biden has tested positive for Covid-19 after traveling to Massachusetts to announce climate policy. Taking the kids to a baseball game, a movie, or Disneyland is a bigger financial commitment than it used to be for middle-class, American families. Sam hosts Jaz Brisack of Starbucks Workers United to give us some updates from the unionization efforts on the ground. Then, Sam is joined by Michael Bronski, professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Harvard University, to discuss his recent piece in the Boston Review "Grooming and the Christian Politics of Innocence". First, Sam dives into the continuing defamation suit by Dominion against Fox, SCOTUS' decision to publically fund private religious schools, and the blistering updates from the 1/6 hearing, including testimony from Shea Moss, the election official accused by name by Trump, on the life-shattering matter that this was for her, from death threats at her home to racist threats in public, and Trump asks Arizona House officials to give him a break, I mean it's what? 11,000 votes?? Next, Jaz Brisack joins as she and Sam get right into her incredible history in labor organizing having only recently graduated, discussing growing up in Texas and Mississippi and knowing she wanted to work in the field of labor, with her first dip into organizing during the fight with the United Auto Workers to organize a massive Nissan factory and what she learned from those original interactions with dirty anti-union corporate tactics. Although that vote fell short in 2017, Jaz discusses the massive influence it had on her and her hopes for organizing, as she carried her interest in labor organizing and labor history into her years as a Rhodes Scholar, before finally getting into her work organizing fast-food franchises in upstate New York. Here, she dives into her work, both labor and organizing, at Panera and Spot Coffee, and how her work with the International Workers of the World finally brought her to the Starbucks in Buffalo where the inklings of SWU began. After diving deep into the challenges and unique qualities of being the first (of so many) unionized Starbucks in the world and the nature of supposedly “progressive” organizations creating a divide in the workplace when it comes to labor rights and violations, they wrap up the interview by covering the importance of labor fights making it onto the mainstream stage and where SWU is going next. Professor Bronski then drops by to walk through the history of the translation of a Christian politics of innocence into homophobic and transphobic legislation, first looking at the sexual psychopath laws of the 1920s to '30s and the shift in the ‘40s and ‘50s to focusing on the threat to children, before diving deeper into this concept of “innocence” and how it plays into a Christian fundamentalist's political ideology. Next, they discuss the role of figureheads like Anita Bryant in pushing back against any social progress for the LGBTQ+ community and bringing about the '90s version of “don't say gay” legislation, before they wrap up the interview with a larger conversation on the waves of homophobia as reactions to threats on the patriarchy, the role of the Women's lib movement in this, particularly in opening up children to be corrupted, and situate this moment of homophobic political backlash. And in the Fun Half: Sam dives into the 1/6 hearings and why Democrats are obsessed with the few Republicans that determine speaking out against Trump to be their best career path, and listen into Adam Schiff's discussion with AZ Speaker of the House on Trump's official requests to overturn the election, Shea Moss' mother on how Trump's public accusations have had wildly distressing effects on their day-to-day lives, and Ron Johnson's defense of his chief of staff attempting to deliver false elector lists to Mike Pence in the WAKE of the 1/6 violence. Chris from Berkeley and Valerie from AZ dive into the pain and frustration they feel about how Democrats are handling these hearings, Gregory from Oklahoma dives into his race for State House District 26, and Jesse Watters pitches COINTELPRO-ing the reproductive rights advocates protesting outside of the Supreme Court. That's not an especially long time. The Korean War lasted for three years, World War II for six. The Arab-Israeli wars, on the other hand, took only a matter a matter of days. A variety of factors contribute to a war's duration. The size of the battlefield is just one. The smaller the battlefield, the fewer soldiers can fit on it and, generally, the shorter the war. In Ukraine, the battlefield is substantial. On that criterion alone, the war there might last for years. As important are the forces arrayed against each other. All three axes of Russia's initial attack – against Odesa, Luhansk and Kyiv – broke because of logistical difficulties. The lines of attack were built largely around infantry with supporting artillery and airstrikes, but the primary strategic principle remained the same. They continued to try to seize cities rather than destroy the Ukrainian army. Thus, about a month after Moscow ruled out Kyiv as a primary target, it has yet to eliminate resistance in the east and south. Part of this has to do with the fact that cities are difficult battlefields. The advantage goes to the defender, who knows the city well and can formulate a strategy around that knowledge. However, the continued problem for Russia is that rather than concentrating its forces on one critical target in order to create optimal circumstances for a victory before moving to another target, it is still driven by its primary mission and vision, much of which is predicated on the assumption that the Ukrainian army is an insignificant force that can be defeated in the course of pursuing its primary strategy: seizing cities. Indeed, the idea of seizing cities as the operational task comes from the Russian goal of conquering all of Ukraine. In pursuit of that goal, there is a logic to defeating the Ukrainian army and occupying cities. But Moscow miscalculated the initial problem. Ukraine is big, and its forces fought from dispersed and tactically mobile positions, the exact kind of defense Russia is ill-suited to fight. The Ukrainians could decline combat where they chose and engage at the time of their choosing. Russia had tons of armor, but armor is not so useful against dispersed infantry or in cities. Russia also gave Ukraine warning of its intentions and staged forces in such a way that Kyiv could prepare its forces for the attack. Ukrainians appear to have dispersed so as to deny Russia a center of gravity to attack. The Ukrainians also accepted limited strategic control over their forces while giving tactical control to local forces. That meant that the Russians were deprived of a primary advantage: the ability to destroy any military concentration or interfere with communication in the field. The Ukrainians did not create vulnerable command centers or a jammable communications network. Infantry teams of various sizes were free to deploy and strike based on tactical opportunity. In other words, forces familiar with the situation were not under the continual control of a central command that was unfamiliar. The Russians could not occupy Ukraine in one blow as they expected. Moscow has since tried to impose a war of attrition. The problem is that this war of attrition costs the Russians as much as the Ukrainians, and in some ways more. The Ukrainians had a second advantage: the United States. The U.S. wanted the Russian invasion to fail. If Ukraine fell, then the Russian army would be face to face with NATO, from Poland to Romania. Russian intentions were always unclear, but assuming the worst case, Russia might follow a successful invasion with another drive westward to recover its pre-1991 position. Washington would then inevitably be drawn into direct conflict with Russia. And the U.S. above all did not want to deploy troops into combat. Circumstances dictated that Ukraine not be defeated and that U.S. troops not be drawn in. The early stages of the invasion showed that denying Russia its victory without U.S. forces was possible. What Ukraine needed was a massive infusion of advanced weapons. Wars change. What had been an effective infantry operation had to be reinforced with anti-tank, anti-air and advanced reconnaissance systems. Confronting the Russian army now is the same infantry that had fought them to a standstill, coupled with advanced weapons and munitions. These need to be managed from a central command, which changes Ukrainian operations but puts Russia at risk in any strategic offensive.   Assassinations And Artillery | Peter Zeihan https://youtu.be/vrluuD-QlYI GEOPOP 81.7K subscribers The Ukraine War, Assassinations, and Artillery by Peter Zeihan on May 6, 2022 The Ukrainian military has enjoyed an outsized amount of success when it comes to successfully finding--and eliminating--a variety of high-value Russian targets. The Ukrainian military did not have a reputation of hitting above their weight before the Russians invaded this past February, nor do we think of them as the kinds of technical wunderkinds to quickly build up indigenous signals and targeting intelligence capabilities. Which means they're probably getting some help. A constellation of various American military and civilian officials have spoken openly about the United States' intelligence sharing relationship with the Ukrainians, either while testifying before the US Congress or directly with the media. They typically frame the intelligence sharing as necessary for helping to keep Ukrainian civilians safe, or giving the government in Kyiv a heads up about Russian intentions. There's little evidence to believe that this represents the full scope of intelligence sharing. Not the least of which is the growing list of Russian generals and military commanders who keep ending up dead. Or the absolutely stunning amount of Russian planes, tanks, armored personnel carriers, rocket launchers and ships (including the flagship of the Black Sea fleet) that the Ukrainians have successfully eliminated. We should give credit where credit is due. The Ukrainian military and volunteers are by all accounts a highly motivated bunch. It is not easy to metabolize new weapons systems, training and tactics--especially against a larger force.   Recommended Recap of the Ukraine Conflict- https://youtu.be/yBZPE9o2gHU How Ukraine Won the First Phase of the War - Modern Warfare DOCUMENTARY Kings and Generals 2.56M subscribers Claim your SPECIAL OFFER for MagellanTV here: https://try.magellantv.com/kingsandge.... I know we say this a lot, but this week, host Jesse David Fox is bringing something a little different to the Good One feed: Instead of a comedian talking about a bit they wrote and love that explains what they're trying to do with their comedy, he brought two academics into the (digital) studio! Meet Matt Sienkiewicz and Nick Marx, authors of the new book That's Not Funny: How The Right Makes Comedy Work For Them. The book is a call to pay attention to the emergence of right-wing comedy and the political power of humor. That's Not Funny argues that it is both an intellectual and politically strategic mistake to assume that comedy has a liberal bias. Matt Sienkiewicz and Nick Marx take readers––particularly self-described liberals––on a tour of contemporary conservative comedy and the "right-wing comedy complex." Together, Matt and Nick walk Jesse through every section of the book, and discuss everything from Jesse Watters's branding as the "conservative John Stewart", to Joe Rogan's hold on pop culture, to the intentional political incorrectness of shows like Legion of Skanks. They also cover the history of right wing comedy, and how the genre manages to successfully capture the ad dollars of the straight while male. Learn more about your ad choices. [00:30] ‘Ripe for Fraud' (39 minutes)On his show last night, Jesse Watters admitted, “[T]he ballot boxes are just ripe for fraud. Everybody knows that with common sense.” That said, Watters made no mention of Dinesh D'Souza's film 2,000 Mules, which actually exposed ballot box fraud in the 2020 presidential election! On another Fox News show last week, Tucker Carlson's producers specifically told founder of True the Vote, Catherine Engelbrecht, not to mention D'Souza's documentary during a segment. So Fox News will discuss ballot box fraud but not D'Souza's film—why? [39:10] Bible Study: Obedience to God's Law Leads to Blessings (15 minutes)The strength and success of ancient Israel depended on its obedience to God's laws, statutes and judgments. Emma hosts Daisy Pitkin, organizer at Workers United, to discuss her recent book On The Line: A Story Of Class, Solidarity, and Two Women's Epic Fight to Build A Union. Then Emma is joined by Brianna Wu, executive director of The Rebellion PAC, to discuss the upcoming primary in Ohio's 11th Congressional District between Nina Turner and Shontel Brown. Daisy begins by discussing the tone of her work, as it focuses on what it *feels* like to build worker solidarity, rather than what happens along the road to success, diving into how this work was birthed well after the labor efforts, as she reflected on her connections with those that built the union alongside her. Next, she brings Emma back to the early 20th Century as they discuss the story of the Uprising of the 20,000, a mass strike amongst young women working in the New York shirtwaist industry – the biggest general strike by women in American history – and their incredible success in bringing over 500 employers to the table, winning better working conditions, wages, and much more, before they dive into the other side of the story, as Pitkin dives into the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911, resulting in 146 (easily preventable) deaths, as the picture of early 1900 organizing paints the clear benefits of winning the union fight, and the devastating consequences of employers coming out on top. Then, Daisy brings us back to her experiences working with Arizona industrial laundry workers in the early 2000s, as she walks through the myriad dangers at the factories, from laborers like Alma in the soil-sort department working with bare hands to parse through used hospital garments, to others that had to climb through intensely heated machinery to avoid production delays. She then gets into the story of her and Alma's undercover work in setting out to create a web of solidarity, looking to their blitz method of contacting and discussing unions with almost all 220 workers at the factory in 48 hours, setting up a meeting, and unpacking the commitment all 220 of them wanted to make together, before getting into the fight that followed – from the 200+ mandatory anti-union meetings in the three weeks that followed, to the illegal firing of Alma and three other leaders. After tying together the story of this effort with the following year-long fight against the illegal union-busting practices, and the incredible ruling that pushed a bargaining order on the employer, Emma and Daisy wrap up the interview with a discussion on what today's labor moment can learn from these stories, why we should be optimistic, and the beauty of the bottom-up tidal wave that is the current labor movement. Emma also touches on President of Deference Joe Biden continuing to go along with whatever right-wing extremist judgment comes through, the continued devastation in Mariupol, and the catastrophe that has been Pete Buttigieg's reign as the Secretary of Transportation. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brianna Wu as they unpack her work in The Rebellion PAC, what she has learned from her own campaigns for Congress, the battle for Ohio's 11th district, and the fight for policies that actually connect with constituents, especially those that aren't fully invested in the political machine. Emma also covers Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow's impassioned rejection of the Right's aggressive targeting of queer youth, and the role religion can play in lifting up the most marginalized in society. Bill O'Reilly says “fuck it! Let's fly it live!” Ted Cruz talks Mickey Mouse f*cking Pluto, Mariana from Minneapolis discusses individuals and combating environmental change, especially in building the world you want to see, and Jesse Watters gives us the horrifying tale of how he got a first date with one of his producers. Emma hosts Ken Klippenstein, investigative reporter at The Intercept, to discuss his recent piece "LEAKED: NEW AMAZON WORKER CHAT APP WOULD BAN WORDS LIKE “UNION,” “RESTROOMS,” “PAY RAISE,” AND “PLANTATION”.  Ken and Emma begin by summarizing the incredible culmination of the Staten Island Amazon unionization effort, beginning back in April 2020 with a walkout for MINIMAL safety protocols in the middle of a pandemic, resulting in the firing of Christian Smalls, only for the fight to completely turn on its head as employees found inspiration and a drive to solidarity with Christian and his other co-workers turning their attention to the creation of a new, independent union for Amazon laborers, combatting wildly offensive and dismissive attempts at union-busting by the company, leading up to last weeks astounding success. After briefly touching on the incredible response to the successful union vote, looking at it as one of the biggest labor victories in half a century, Ken dives into a few of the other investigations he has held into Amazon's poor safety regulation. They then get to the real reveal that Klippenstein discovered, as they dive into Amazon's leaked internal messaging server and its exhaustive list of banned words ranging from the obvious (racial epithets, slurs) to the obviously exploitative (union, fire, accessibility, freedom, slave labor, living wage, identity, FREEDOM). Ken walks through both the original senior meetings that saw internal social media as a solution to their inability to keep employees, and the revelation that was realizing such a platform would also have to guard against the “dark side” of social media (worker solidarity). They wrap up the interview with a little compare and contrast between Amazon's internal messaging and their external social media policy which is actual humans cranking out dissociatively positive tweets in support of management. Emma also dives into Howard Schultz's return to the podium of Starbucks Town Halls as he dangles shiny tokens of the non-fungible variety in the eyes of his “partners” to distract from the incredible wave of unionization efforts occurring in his coffee shops throughout the country, before touching on the information coming in about Russian war crimes, what their retreat from Kyiv might mean, and insights into the UN's new IPCC report. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Nomiki Konst as they show off their Elizabeth Holmes impressions, Justin from Georgia calls in to discuss the Amazon unionization victory, and how and WHY different media members tried to tie in AOC to the conversation. JD Vance discusses the bad hombres coming over the border, but just means the Sacklers, as Emma and Nomiki reflect on the absurdity of the liberal Hillbilly Elegy phase. Sarah Palin and Jesse Watters fantasize about AOC in a piece on the left just “pounding and pounding” ideas of sex and gender deeper and deeper into our heads, and Kenny from Berkeley discusses changing the conversation on electoralism. Welcome to Season 2, Episode 14! Most people like a good joke, but when it is harmful or demeaning, or there is a pattern of a specific target being laughed at instead of laughed with, then it can lead to reinforcing stereotypes and power dynamics. This is what has happened to Asian Pacific people in the U.S., and being the target of jokes desensitizing the impact with audiences and normalizes mocking of AAPI individuals. Today we take time to talk about some key moments when AAPI people were made to be the joke in movies or by comedians, celebrities, and athletes. There's some great work done by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. One of their studies was done with Gold House and the Coalition for Asian Pacifics in Entertainment called I Am Not a Fetish or Model Minority: Redefining What it Means to Be API in the Entertainment Industry. We also mention a great piece from The Daily Show where Ronny Chieng mocks Jesse Watters.
