Biz and Theresa are looking for a last minute miracle! “Parent! It's crazy dress like a historical figure pajama day today. What can I wear?” “Parent! I’m going on a field trip today! Here is my permission slip…oh and I need a lunch in a paper sack.” “Parent! My teacher said they emailed you many times to order my class shirt. Did you do it? I have to wear it today.” Do we let them suffer through this “learning moment” or help them “make it work?” Whether it is our fault for being unable to juggle one more thing, or our kid’s fault for waiting until Sunday night to tell us they need something for Monday morning, the real lesson will be teaching our children they can probably bullshit their way through anything last minute! It all started with coupons -- and it's become a multi-million dollar, multi-platform media empire. It's The Onion: A worldwide source for witty news satire. The Onion was started by a few college kids at the University of Wisconsin in the late ‘80s. Now it's so engrained in our culture that we point out when the real news “looks like an Onion headline.” The Onion has both observed the world, and changed it -- and become a must-read for millions of people every day. The Onion has had a profound influence on the business of comedy, and survived and thrived in a chaotic media landscape. This is a story about a company that is unafraid to challenge convention, and is adamant about honoring its vision above everything else. The Venture is hosted by Ashley Milne-Tyte. This episode features: Mike Sacks, contributor, Vanity Fair, and author of Stinker Lets Loose! and Poking a Dead Frog: Conversations with Today's Top Comedy WritersBaratunde Thurston, former Onion director of digital, author of How to Be BlackSarah Pappalardo & Beth Newell, co-founders and editors of Reductress, and authors of How to Win at Feminism: The Definitive Guide to Having it All - And Then Some!Scott Dikkers, former Onion editor-in-chief, and author of Trump's America: Buy This Book And Mexico Will Pay For It, and How to Write FunnyMarnie Shure, managing editor of The OnionMike McAvoy, president and CEO of The Onion To learn more about The Venture, go to virginatlantic.com/theventure Learn more about your ad choices. On today's episode I talk to writer Beth Newell. Originally from Lynnfield, MA, Beth has been writing, performing and teaching sketch at The Magnet Theater for many years. She's also one of the founders and editors of the satirical women's magazine Reductress. In the three short years since its inception, Reductress has become it's own cottage industry. Besides the online magazine, it's also spawned a wonderful podcast called Mouth Time, and on October 25th, their first book, How to Win at Feminism, will be released by HarperCollins. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.

Sarah Pappalardo is the co-founder of Reductress, the first and only satirical women’s magazine. Reductress is a hilarious website conceived, developed, and run by Sarah and her co-everything, Beth Newell. Sarah tells Writers' Bloc all about how she and Beth took an idea and made it into an actual product, and trust me, there's more to it than meets the eye. So it's good that you'll mainly be using your ears from here on out. We also get into a welcome and substantive conversation about women in comedy and some of the challenges they face that aren't always understood or even recognized by their male associates. It's long overdue on Writers' Bloc and I think you're going to enjoy hearing it. Sarah has also produced a small handful of documentary shorts, including Reverence , which was featured in IFC Theater's DOCNYC this year. And she's written several plays including Cold, which was produced at the Plays and Players Theater last summer in Philadelphia. I hope you'll be as pleased with this episode as I am. And, as usual, if not - your money back. (WINK!) Now get to listenin'! Or, if it suits you better, you can listen on iTunes. See if I care!
