Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Tom Tangney, retired former Seattle journalist and broadcaster, longtime local cinephile - and all around gadfly. The Seattle International Film Festival – or SIFF - announced on October 9, 2025 that they are ending their lease of the Egyptian Theatre on Seattle's Capitol Hill. The theatre, which was built as a Masonic Temple around 1916, belongs to Seattle Central College. It's unclear what's next for the structure, which has not been officially recognized as a historic landmark. Still, it has served as a movie theatre for decades, and was key to growth of Seattle as a center of movie-going, and to the development of the SIFF. Tom Tangney worked at the Egyptian in the 1980s, and has paid attention to Seattle cinemas and cinephiles for decades. Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is David Eskenazi, Seattle's preeminent sports collector and historian. Seattle is battling Detroit in Major League Baseball's American League Division Series. As this episode was being recorded on Thursday, October 9, 2025, the Mariners and the Tigers were on the eve of facing off in the decisive game of the best of five series. Game Five will take place in Seattle on Friday, October 10, 2025, and the winner will earn the right to face the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series. David Eskenazi shares the story of pitcher Fred Hutchinson, Seattle's first big baseball star. Hutch played for the Seattle Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League in 1938 right out of Franklin High School in the Rainier Valley. After a phenomenal season, he was "sold" to the Detroit Tigers, where he became a Major League Baseball star. Hutchinson is also the namesake of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Jeremy Dimick, Director of Collections and Curatorial for the Detroit Historical Society and Museum. Seattle is battling Detroit in Major League Baseball's American League Division Series. As this episode was being recorded on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, the Mariners and the Tigers were about to face off in Detroit in Game Four of the best of five series. A win for Seattle, and they move on to the American League Championship Series; a win for Detroit, and Game Five will take place in Seattle on Friday, October 10, 2025. With this baseball battle underway, Mr. Dimick shares his vast knowledge of Detroit's incredible sports history, and puts up with our goofy questions about sports connections between the two cities, including hydroplane racing in the 1950s, and the Seattle Seahawks losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Superbowl - held in Detroit - in 2006. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, we present some recent vintage audio – a piece Feliks Banel produced for a Seattle radio station in October 2022 about the Seattle Mariners and their predecessors – the one-season-and-done Seattle Pilots of 1969 - as well as the backstory of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Pilots left Seattle and became the Brewers in 1970. Ever since the Brewers moved into the National League in the late 1990s, some people in Seattle have wished for the Mariners to face the Brewers in the World Series. It would be Seattle baseball now against Seattle baseball then. The living versus the ghosts. Slade Gorton . . . versus Bud Selig. As of this moment – on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 – both the Mariners and the ghosts of the Seattle Pilots (aka the Milwaukee Brewers) – are still alive in the playoffs, and the match-up remains more possible than it has ever been before. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, we present more context about Gas Works Park and the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation's proposed removal of elements of the historic “cracking towers.” As heard in the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board's meeting of October 1, 2025, at the heart of the debate is what the late landscape architect Rich Haag – who had the radical idea to preserve the industrial elements that give the park its name and its character – intended for those industrial elements over time, and how and whether they would be cared for and maintained. First up are some key highlights and analysis from the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board meeting which took place on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. These highlights illustrate the crux of the debate about what to do to prevent injuries and death at Gas Works Park and what the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation is also responsible for when it comes to respecting the historic landmark aspects of the park and carrying through the intent of designer Rich Haag. Following the highlights and analysis, we present the entire October 1, 2025 Gas Works Park discussion audio from the Landmarks Board, with some minor editing to remove long silences and extraneous discussion of logistical issues. Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Leonard Garfield, executive director of Seattle's Museum of History & Industry or “MOHAI.” It was recently announced that Garfield will be presented with the 2025 Pacific Northwest History Award by the Pacific Northwest Historian's Guild. The award recognizes individuals or organizations for significant contributions to the writing, preserving and promoting of Pacific Northwest history. The award will be presented on Friday, October 10, 2025 as part of the guild's annual meeting and reception at the Mountaineers Center at Magnuson Park. Feliks Banel's guests on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY are Steve Edmiston and Jason Mattson. Steve Edmiston is an entertainment lawyer, founder of Burien, Washington's Men in Black Birthday Bash Festival, and screenwriter of the short film “The Maury Island Incident.” Jason Mattson is Executive Director of the Lewis County Historical Museum in Chehalis, Washington. The two are part of a team participating in a debate taking place in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico on Friday, October 10, 2025 called “ROSWELL VS. WASHINGTON.” The goal is to settle – maybe not for once and for all, but at least for one night – which part of the United States should rightfully be considered the de facto capitol and “O.G.” of the American UFO experience. Should it be Roswell, New Mexico – with its mysterious alien corpses and alleged U.S. Army cover-up - or should it be the Evergreen State of Washington – with its flying saucers and molten slag raining down from doughnuts in the sky, and those mysterious men in black? On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, we get the latest news on a plan by the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation (SPR) to make significant changes to historic Gas Works Park on Lake Union in Seattle's Wallingford/Fremont neighborhoods. Conservation architect Patricia Fels is our guest. She took part in the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board (LPB) meeting on October 1, 2025, and listened in as the board members chose to "table" SPR's proposal to remove elements of the iconic "cracking towers" at Gas Works Park, rather than reject the request. SPR said they will revise their proposal and be back before the LPB as soon as the next meeting on October 15, 2025. Patricia Fels is a member of Friends of Gas Works Park, and worked closely with the late Richard Haag, noted landscape architect who designed the groundbreaking public space - which includes industrial elements from the "gas works" that previously occupied the site. Fels also wrote the landmark nomination for Gas Works Park, and knows its history and context better than just about anybody. Cascade of History asked Seattle Parks and Recreation for comment immediately following yesterday's tabling of their Gas Works proposal, but we have not yet heard back as of midday Thursday, October 2, 2025. For additional information and context, here's a BONUS EPISODE from earlier this week featuring audio from the September 17, 2025 meeting of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board and the Gas Works Park presentation by SPR: https://soundcloud.com/cascadeofhistory/bonus-episode-gasworks-slpb For more information about Friends of Gas Works Park: https://fogwp.org/ For more information about the Wednesday, October 8, 2025 2pm meeting of the Parks, Public Utilties & Technology and Committee of the Seattle City Council: https://www.seattle.gov/council/meetings/committees-and-agendas/parks-public-utilities-and-technology For more information about commenting on items before the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board: https://www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/historic-preservation/city-landmarks/public-comment CASCADE OF HISTORY is broadcast LIVE most Sunday nights at 8pm Pacific Time via SPACE 101.1 FM in Seattle and gallantly streams everywhere via www.space101fm.org. UPDATE AS OF 6PM WEDS, OCT 1, 2025 - THE SEATTLE LANDMARKS PRESERVATION BOARD VOTED TO TABLE SEATTLE PARKS' REQUEST FOR A CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL TO MAKE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO GAS WORKS PARK. BOARD MEMBERS WANTED MORE SPECIFICS ABOUT PARKS' PROPOSED WORK, A LONG-RANGE PLAN FOR THE PARK, AND DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT DESIGNER RICH HAAG INTENDED FOR THE STRUCTURES IN THE PARK IN THE LONG-TERM: DECAY OR MAINTENANCE. PARKS SAYS THEY WILL BE BACK BEFORE THE BOARD IN TWO WEEKS. UPDATE VIA CASCADE OF HISTORY FACEBOOK PAGE: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1FzqBbzzRs/ On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, we present audio from the September 17, 2025 meeting of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board. In a move that has gone largely unreported, the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation (SPR) is seeking permission to make significant changes to the historic structures from the old gas plant that give Seattle's Gas Works Park its name and much of its character. Since 2008, several people have been injured and three have died while trespassing and climbing on the historic structures. Later today – Wednesday, October 1, 2025 – the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board seems poised to approve SPR's request for a “CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL.” This would allow for removal of elements of the old "cracking towers" - giant, rusty pieces of equipment from the original gas plant. Gas Works Park is internationally known and is a beloved local destination on Lake Union in the city's Wallingford and Fremont neighborhoods. It was designed more than 50 years ago by the late Richard Haag. Haag was a landscape architect whose vision of preserving the industrial elements and incorporating them into the design of the park was revolutionary at the time, and it has influenced other park designs around the globe. In an emailed statement on October 1, 2025, a parks spokesperson wrote: “The Mayor's proposed 2026 budget adds $1.8 million to support safety improvements and remove certain appurtenances attached to the 'Cracking Towers' at Gas Works Park. Appurtenances have been used by trespassers and include catwalks, ladders, support framing, and select piping and valving, and pipe sections that currently extend beyond the security fencing. Improvements will also include the installation of security lighting to ‘up-light' the towers from purposefully placed fixtures around the perimeter of the towers.” As part of the process seeking approval, Seattle Parks employee David Graves made a presentation to the Landmarks Preservation Board on September 17, 2025, and the board members asked questions, and discussed the project with Landmarks Board staff. Today's meeting (Wednesday, October 1, 2025) begins at 3:30pm Pacific Time, and public comment may be made remotely online (see link below). In commemoration of Canada's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we present a BONUS EPISODE with excerpts from a conversation recorded by Feliks Banel in summer 2021 with Shelly Boyd and the late Michael Finley of the Colville Tribe in North Central Washington. This was not long after the discovery near Kamloops, British Columbia of what appears to be hundreds of unmarked graves at the site of a former residential school. In our conversation, we touched on many chapters of Northwest and British Columbia history, including residential schools in Canada and the United States – where countless Indigenous children were abused, and from which some never returned. The late Michael Finley was a tribal historian and former tribal chair, and served tribal liaison for the Washington State Historical Society. His cousin Shelly Boyd is a language scholar and co-founder of the Inchelium Language House, and authored the cover story for the autumn 2021 edition of COLUMBIA Magazine. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel speaks with First Nations visual artist and public policy expert Lou-ann Neel by telephone from, as she says, "the lands of the Lekwungen, also known as Victoria, BC" for history and context of Canada's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The 2025 observance is taking place on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. Ms. Neel talks about treaties, unceded lands and the destructive "residential schools" at the root of the observances taking place in across Canada on September 30 - which is also known as "Orange Shirt Day." According to the Canadian government, the day honors "the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities . . . [p]ublic commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process." There is no similar observance in the United States, where similar residential schools were also in operation for decades. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel digs into the "field tape archives" for part one of his 2015 conversation with the late John Spellman, the Evergreen State's most recent Republican governor. John Spellman passed away in 2018 at age 91. John Spellman was a King County Commissioner in the 1960s, and then served three terms as King County's first County Executive. He was elected governor in 1980, and served one term during those tough economic times. This far-ranging conversation was recorded in downtown Seattle on June 8, 2015. In part one, we talk about being elected governor in 1980, running against Dixy Lee Ray in 1976, and against Booth Gardner in 1984. We talk about the Forward Thrust project, including the construction and ultimate demise of the Kingdome – and about Spellman's support for President Richard Nixon. Part two will be presented in an upcoming BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY. Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Josephine Tsai, a journalism graduate student in Brooklyn, New York. CASCADE OF HISTORY has been covering the threatened closure of the Lewis Army Museum at Joint Base Lewis McChord near Tacoma for the past few months. As we have reported, Lewis Army Museum is one of many U.S. Army museums targeted for closure around the United States and at bases overseas. While researching the threatened closure of the Army's Harbor Defense Museum at Brooklyn's Fort Hamilton, Ms. Tsai discovered what she believes is a pattern that reveals why some Army museums were added to the planned closure list and others were not. According to Josephine Tsai's research, it all seems to come down to one thing: local history. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel speaks with three-term Republican former Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed about the history of voting by mail in Washington state. Secretary Reed was in office from 2001 to 2013, and previously served as the elected auditor of Thurston County. In this earlier role, he was one of the first public officials to support efforts to adopt voting by mail in the Evergreen State back in the early 1980s. Washington became the second all-vote-by-mail state in 2011; Oregon was first a decade earlier. With recent talk from the Trump Administration of a federal effort to end voting by mail – which, on its face, is likely unconstitutional – it seemed like a good time to speak with Secretary Reed and learn some of the history and context for the practice in the state of Washington, and also look ahead to what might happen should the federal effort proceed. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel speaks with John Cox, bell ringer at Saint Spiridon Orthodox Cathedral in the Cascade neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Sometime early on Sunday, August 31, 2025, thieves got away with three bronze bells, and Mr. Cox and others are trying to track down the bells before they're melted down for scrap. The parish at Saint Spiridon Orthodox Cathedral dates to the 1890s, and the current building was constructed in the 1930s. The bells are much more recent, but would be very difficult to replace - given they were made in Russia as part of an acoustically matched set of seven bells (four of which remain at the cathedal), and because the Russian invasion of Ukraine makes importing anything practically impossible. If you have any information about the bells stolen from Saint Spiridon Orthodox Cathedral, please call the Seattle Police Department. Thank you to Jean Sherrard for his assistance with this episode. Matt McCauley, Kent Sullivan, Saundra Middleton (who is a descendant of Peter Kirk) and Michael Donnelly have been studying archives, maps, photos and other materials to paint a vivid picture of the partial construction of the mill in the 1890s, the specific whereabouts of various buildings and structures, as well as the ultimate fate of the site (and of Kirk's venture) in the early 20th century.
