Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Patrick J. Sullivan, board secretary of the Puget Sound Coast Artillery Museum at Fort Warden near Port Townsend, Washington. In this conversation, Mr. Sullivan shares the news about the Coast Artillery Museum's imminent closure; after 50 years, the organization's board has voted to sunset its museum facility at Fort Worden, which will permanently close after Labor Day Weekend 2026. Mr. Sullivan explains that volunteers are harder and harder to come by and that revenue from cruise ship passengers has dropped off, and thus the board has chosen to cease operations of the museum, which was founded in 1976. In the years before World War I, Fort Worden was part of the historic "triangle of fire" - along with nearby Fort Casey and Fort Flagler - of coast artillery protecting Puget Sound from incursions of enemy vessels. Jon performs several of his original songs of the sea on this episode, including a tribute to Peter Bevis, the late Seattle artist who brought home the old streamline ferry KALAKALA from Ketchikan in 1998. Jon also performs "Roll On, Kalakala" - a song based on "Roll On, Columbia" for which Jack Broom wrote special lyrics in 1998. We also hear get a live report from roving correspondent Ken Zick setting the record straight regarding Merchant's Café, before Jon plays a few more songs, and we listen to an old recording of "Ballad of the Cathlamet," another song for which Jack Broom wrote the lyrics. BONUS CLAMMY AND FISHY EPISODE: In Memory of Paul Dorpat, 1938 - 2026

Re-posting this CLAMMY AND FISHY BONUS EPISODE in memory of beloved Seattle historian Paul Dorpat, October 28, 1938 to May 27, 2026. Anyone who works in history, public history or anything related to local history in the Pacific Northwest stands on the shoulders of the kind-hearted, brilliant and very funny Paul Dorpat. He was truly one of the good guys. REST IN PEACE. ORIGINAL EPISODE DESCRIPTION: On this CLAMMY AND FISHY BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY from November 2025, Feliks Banel (clam)digs into the audio archives to tell the twisted tale of the Ivar's Billboard Hoax, aka "Underwatergate." Though, once you've listened, it may have you wondering if there was ever hoax at all, or if it was actually some kind of elaborate coverup. In 2009, Seattle-based Ivar's seafood restaurants released a series of videos documenting the search for and discovery of UNDERWATER BILLBOARDS in Puget Sound. As the story goes, they were placed in the 1950s by restaurateur and showman Ivar Haglund to reach burgeoning submarine traffic. The 2009 undersea search was all very exciting, and many were completely hooked. But then, Jim Dever, with KING 5's Evening Magazine at the time - and still a great friend of CASCADE OF HISTORY - had the exclusive exposé, produced in cooperation with Ivar's, and featuring Ivar's CEO Bob Donegan. As Dever's report made it seem, the whole thing was a brilliant stunt that fooled a lot of people - but it angered a few, too, who thought Ivar's had gone too far. Fast forward to November 2015, and naïve history radio correspondent Feliks Banel set out to tell the backstory with help from Paul Dorpat. Dorpat is a beloved historian - and friend and biographer of Ivar - who had served as official historian of the vintage underwater billboard hunt. When the hoax had been revealed in 2009, Dorpat – longtime author of the weekly “Now & Then” history column - was criticized by many, and even temporarily suspended by The Seattle Times for his role in the stunt. As you listen to Paul Dorpat's 2015 version of events, try to keep clam. Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is David Nicandri, retired longtime director of the Washington State Historical Society, and prolific author on the era of explorers and exploration. For anyone who's ever wondered about the Missouri River and its impact on Pacific Northwest (or "Old Oregon Country") history, David Nicandri fills in the gaps, connects the dots and provides history and context for understanding how the geography and history fit together. From Lewis & Clark to the Astor Party, from the Oregon Trail to the Mullan Road, Nicandri weaves a rich tapestry of information and observations, indulging CASCADE OF HISTORY's Feliks Banel, who recently realized his knowledge of the Missouri River was deficient in many ways. These groups already do much along these lines and have for decades, AASLH says, but the opportunity – and the need - has presented itself to do more, and to do so in a more deliberate and visible way. “Now, more than ever, there is an urgent need to leverage the vital role our field plays in democracy and expand its impact,” says an AASLH press release. “HDI will provide inspiration, guidance, and connection from within and beyond the history community to help repair and fortify American civic life.” In this conversation, AASLH President & CEO John Dichtl candidly characterizes the challenges of the cultural and political landscape that many in the history field now face, and describes the opportunities presented by this particular moment in American history. The program will formally launch with the History & Democracy Virtual Summit, May 27-28, 2026. CASCADE OF HISTORY spoke with John R. Dichtl on Friday, April 17, 2026. BONUS EPISODE: Gas Works Park Update - Did City of Seattle Staffers Override Volunteers of Landmarks Preservation Board?

Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Eugenia Woo, Director of Preservation Services for the non-profit preservation group Historic Seattle. An article in the Seattle Times on Monday, April 13, 2026 by Catalina Gaitán ("Seattle officials seek permit to fix Gas Works Park ‘hazard'") characterizes a move made by the City of Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections as a way for City of Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation officials to "sidestep" the work of volunteer members of the City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods' Landmarks Preservation Board, and move forward with removal of elements of the historic towers at the popular park. Parks and Recreation has been seeking permission to remove "appurtenances" - walkways, ladders, etc. - from the historic towers preserved in the park as part of landscape architect Rich Haag's revolutionary design more than a half-century ago. We dive deep into the issue with Eugenia Woo of Historic Seattle about how we got here, and what this means going forward - and we ask if cynicism is warranted when examining the facts surrounding this move by the City of Seattle to effectively undermine its own volunteer Landmarks Preservation Board. After this conversation was recorded late Monday afternoon (April 13, 2026), Bryan Stevens from the Department of Construction and Inspections responded to an email question about whether or not Seattle Parks and Recreation needs to further consult with the Landmarks Preservation Board or seek any additional permission or approval before removing material from the protected elements of the towers. "[L]imited removal of landmark features may proceed without Landmark Preservation Board approval," Stevens wrote. Further, based on what Stevens also wrote, SDCI - not the Landmarks Preservation Board - now has permit authority over changes made to historic elements at Gas Works Park. "A permit application has been submitted and is under review now (7136018-CN)," Stevens continued. "Once reviews are approved, we will issue the permit and re-inspect the site to confirm the hazards have been removed. The timing of removal is best answered by Parks and Recreation." Each member of the panel - an "AUDIO MOUNT RUSHMORE" for many longtime radio listeners - has decades of experience working in radio news at the local level in the Pacific Northwest (mostly at KIRO in Seattle), and several also worked at one time for the CBS Radio Network (which has also been known as CBS News Radio and CBS Radio News). All valued and depended on CBS for what its national and international coverage meant to local stations in a not-so-distant age when radio news was far less diminished in resources, listeners and impact. In this timely and topical conversation, which was recorded on Good Friday (April 3, 2026), each panelist shares his/her memories of CBS and reflects on the significance of the hourly radio newscasts, and theorizes about what will be lost by listeners in 700 communities where those newscasts currently air. Also discussed is the impact on already significantly reduced news operations at local stations, and what might come next - or what might replace the functions of CBS - for those 700 affiliates. Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Ruth Leonard of Lacey, Washington - the granddaughter of Mabel of Lebam. Ruth's grandmother's full name was Mabel Pearl Goodell Thompson. Mabel's father, Jotham Goodell founded the community of Half Moon, in what's now Pacific County along Highway 6, about midway between the communities of Frances and Holcomb . When the US Post Office rejected "Half Moon" for the post office there circa 1890, Jotham Goodell came up with an alternate: Lebam, which was his three or four-year-old daughter Mabel's name spelled backward. In this conversation, Ruth Leonard brings her grandmother to life through memories of Mabel and of the community of Lebam. Mabel Pearl Goodell Thompson, who gets no more than a sentence or two in Washington state placename books as Lebam's namesake, is rendered by her granddaughter as a three-dimensional human being. Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS ENCORE EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Bob Blackburn, Jr., son of legendary "Voice of the Sonics" Bob Blackburn. The NBA Board of Governors voted Wednesday, March 25, 2026 to “explore” expanding the league to Las Vegas and Seattle. Explore? Really? EX-PLORE?!?! The original Sonics left Seattle in 2008 and became the OKC Thunder. Anyhow, despite the NBA's goofy word choice, this seemed like the perfect occasion to revisit one of our most popular shows ever: when we marked the centenary of the late Bob Blackburn back in October 2024 with help from his son. The elder Blackburn was born in California on October 14, 1924, and became one of the most beloved broadcasters in Pacific Northwest history. Bob, Jr. shared memories on the eve of what would have been his father's 100th birthday, and played highlights from a treasure trove of vintage audio from his father's broadcasts of Portland Buckaroos hockey, Portland Beavers baseball, OSU football and, of course, the Seattle Supersonics (including a postgame interview from 1971 with Wilt Chamberlain). On this BONUS ENCORE EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel speaks with three-term Republican former Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed about the history and origins of voting by mail in Washington state. This conversation was recorded in September 2025. Secretary Reed was in office from 2001 to 2013, and previously served as the elected auditor of Thurston County. In this earlier role, he was one of the first public officials to support efforts to adopt voting by mail in the Evergreen State back in the early 1980s. Washington became the second all-vote-by-mail state in 2011; Oregon was first a decade earlier. With Trump Administration legislation before Congress which would effectively outlaw voting by mail - and, in addition, the US Supreme Court's expected decision in a case from Mississippi which might also impact Washington state - it was critical to listen again to Secretary Reed and learn the history and context for the practice in the state of Washington, and also look ahead to what might happen should the Trump effort proceed. He became a journalist and worked as a newspaper reporter in Europe in the 1930s during the run-up to World War II. Stalin punished Barnes for publishing factual stories that reflected poorly on the Soviet Union, and Hitler banished Barnes from Germany - when Barnes published a prescient story predicting that Germany would eventually attack the Soviet Union.
